I'm really starting to consider this tablet, but in my courses, I need heavy math usage, and would like to know a few things:
First of all, I have the "engineer's handwriting," meaning my handwriting is very clear (on paper at least, haha)
Assuming this, how well is the recognition for more complicated math formulas?
Can it do matrices? Can it recognize hats/vectors or other accents of a variable?
Also, when you "save" it onto the note pad, does it:
-act like an image
-act like actual text on the document
-or both?
Likewise, how would you rate the customization of how the formula is represented, if any.
Lastly, can it be set so that the equation is recognized and formatted into LaTex notation?
I've taken some looks on YouTube, but I only find integrals, sums, and that sort, and not much of higher level stuffs.
If there are any math students here, how would you rate the use of this tablet for math notes?
Thanks!

Post a sample of your notes and I'll try it out later tonight
You're probably not looking for this, but I take notes using LectureNotes. It basically saves it as an image, so no need for handwriting recognition and whatnot.
But here is a not-great, not-bad part of my notes:
http://imgur.com/a/I1Kur
It's normally saved in .png files in LectureNotes which you can then turn into PDFs, but I rather not upload my whole notebook so I only select what could be termed the most average parts of my notes. My notes look better now, now that I've learned a little more about how to use the app (there's a LOT you can customize), but this is how you can expect it to look when it's not great but not bad.
If you can replicate this, then I can assume it works well with the more complicated things.
Also, by image I mean an image within text. I prefer that it is represented as in text and not a whole page as an image.

The formula recognition is mainly just for light work, I just use lecture notes and it's perfect, Easy to erase mistakes, copy and paste, move formulas and equations around, drawing shapes and stuff with multiple layers and what not. Snotes sucks for engineering/ math notes, but lecture notes is amazing. Import and export pdf's and cut out parts of books and paste into a note
Excuse my bad handwriting but this is done on the note with snote also the notebooks save as text you can grab an image from the text but you can also easily modify whatever you write on it

Looks good. But I meant formula match. Lol. Thanks though.
Honestly, if it can do matrices, then I think it can do almost anything. I read that matrices is the hardest to recognize into latex by recognition.

I love taking notes on the Note 10.1. I mainly use the shape and normal handwriting mode for my notes. i use shapes for tables and graphs, otherwise I use the handwriting mode. I don't like using the OCR or math modes because they are not easy to modify or undo.

I tried doing the notes you uploaded but it just can't do it for the stuff in the square brackets. It also got bogged down by the time I finished the first column.
edit: also failed to recognize teh Q R C type symbols.
Finally: Keep in mind that I'm on an older version of S Note (Android 4.0.4 build XWALG4) so I don't know if it has improved with newer versions of 4.0.4 like XWALI4 or jelly bean.
This is my attempt, did the brackets and stuff fairly easily but don't know anything about these formulas so they may not be what was desired.
Thanks a lot for trying the sample. I'm sure it can do the doubleR/Q/C but wasn't absolutely sure about matrices (the elements in the bracket). If it can't, that's a bit unfortunate because linear and abstract algebras need matrices quite a lot. Nonetheless, I'm pretty impressed but I will wait after next semester until I decide on a tablet. Again, thanks for your input. =)

You're missing half of the matrix, I tried for around 5-6 minutes to get all four quadrants of the matrix but I couldn't.

Hey guys! I don't know if you've ever tried one of those speed reading softwares (like iReadFast for Mac OS), but they really turn reading into a whole new experience. It's less tiring and a lot faster. And, guess what, there already is an app for the much loved iPhone (called QuickReader), which takes speed reading to a mobile device. In their FAQs, they talk about eventually taking QuickReader to Android OS, but nothings planned yet. So... if any of you developers feel the urge to do some good for all us heavy readers... why not make an app? Cheers, Thomas
This is the technique included in QuickReader:

+1 -- the lack of an RSVP app (or at least a good one... there is SpeedReader - http://www.appbrain.com/app/speed-reader-lite/com.shrednet.SpeedReader - but the free version isn't good enough to justify risking buying the full app, whenever that becomes available).
- Matt
I would love to see this.
SpeedRead lite sucks. I'm using it now, only supports .txt files and has terrible features.
Would love to see this!
Regards
Smith
Yo guys!
I'm almost finished an app for exactly this!
You will be able to flash text across your screen at up to 999 words per minute
Also, it saves and reads to/from the SD card so you can just drop in .txt files and it will read them, you can create new .txt files by pasting content into the app too! It also has a simplified comprehension test which tracks your progress over the last 30 odd tries and displays it in a nice graph.
Right now, I'm just designing the UI and then I'm pretty much done.
It will be called 'Speedr', watch out for it!
Please post and I'll be happy to beta test.
Also, could you PLEASE build in ePub support -- I'd be willing to buy that app!
Yo Matt,
I'm not sure its ready for Beta just yet, I actually found out it has a couple more important little stuff to sort out, like properly putting loading large amounts of text into threads etc..
Epub.. that would be very nice indeed, but I'm not aware of any Java library's that would read that for me :/
I'll be sure to look around though, I can see how this would be another big selling point! Thanks for the tip, hadn't thought of this!
The great thing about ePub is that its pretty much xhtml in a modified .zip wrapper. So working with it isn't to bad. In terms of available libraries/resources, check out:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3645795/epub-library-for-java-or-android
http://www.siegmann.nl/epublib
Either sounds like a good place to start.
Not to sound harsh but an ereader w/o ePub support will be a very tough sell. RSVP + ePub is a novel (and needed) reading app.
Good luck. Really looking forward to app.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
Thanks for that Matt, the Epublib library looks real nice, I think I'll have a go at using that. I'll also be looking into providing PDF support on top of the basic .txt support. This should cover most ebooks.
By the way, just so I'm clear, the emphasis for my app will be on improving your reading speed, not necessarily just a plain reader. For example, while flashing the text, only a pause button will be there. The user will not be able to move backwards or forwards as this would be sorta like cheating.
This looks awesome...
Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk
Thanks for the reply Mark. I really encourage you to prioritize ePub above PDF. The reason is that currently Pdf's preservation of print design artifacts (page numbers, hard line breaks, hard hyphenation, headers and footers, in page footnotes) kills the value of RSVP, as it breaks the reading/processing flow. This is one of the many reasons why ePub is so superior to PDF for ereading.
As far as the app only being about reading speed, that's a bummer -- I think you would be surprised at the amount of people who would like a straight out ereading AP like this (I'd be happy to spec it out if you ever would like). That said keeping with you goal, let me suggest one feature to add to the screen: have the app pause/play by tapping the general text area and then add speed up/slow down arrows that can effect the rate of display in real time. You can also use the volume rocker, but given the increase in larger tablets I think providing an on-screen alternative is a good idea. Also think about display a wpm count.
Good luck.

Has some one got hands on the apk?
I've been loving Android since the day I switched from IOS, but to this day, I still can't find a good note-taking app (mostly for typed-in notes). On IOS, there are many of these apps that allow typing, drawing, recording audio, outines, fonts, colors, etc (AudioNote, Notability, etc)...
However, in Android, I can not seem to find a singe app that allows me to combine typed-in notes, hard-drawn drawings and audio recording.
I thought those were pretty basic requirements, and they are in teh IOS world - just wondering if I'm missing something or if maybe it's a market just waitng to be had for ANdroid?
Thanks for any help you can offer! I'm currently using EverNote, but it doesn't offer the ability to draw... I see that they just released Skitch as a companion app for EverNote that is for drawing, but it's really not integrated into Evernote...
Thanks Again!
You can try Extensive notes. It has options for those notes, but not all together in one. You can make a folder that has all the files. You could try emailing the Dev and ask if you can attach drawings to regular notes. I usually just use Extensive notes or beautiful notes for typing and handrite for drawings.
I've been using tabnotes. It's not bad at all. Wish I could cut and paste inside the note like on xournal, but other than that, it's great.

Another great app is Freenote which allows you to type, draw, handwrite, take photos and import/export pictures.
The question has been asked several times. Even recently I;ve seen the topic, but I'm looking for something most annotation applications can't handle and I was wondering if there is an application or applications that can handle it. There are really two and half things that I would like to do.
Sometimes the margins aren't enough room for the comments I want to make. I would like to open up a gap in the text where I can write something. Basically I want to "add a page" in between text ( even if only at paragraph breaks).
The second thing is I would want at least one "comment layer" and hopefully more. By comment layer I mean a layer like in GIMP,Krita, Inksape and other drawing programs which I mark up and can shut on or off.
The third thing ( actually the half thing, because I really expect it in a decent program ) I would like is to somehow be able to save my changes to a seperate file, which I could reload later and modify the notations with out hurting the original document. In other words "export to pdf" is not the only way of saving something.
Thanks
AW: App for serously annotating PDFs.
Unfortunately you did not mention Which apps you already tested and did not find useful .
I'm sure that the Combination of your wish list Will lead to no result .Currently Im happy With ezPDF reader but Im also teting iAnnotate .
l like the Idea of saveing the annotation In a separate file . This Would also enable annotation for protected files.
Have you tried Lecture Notes. You can divide pages to create the extra page you wish. You can add multiple layers for annotating, drawing etc. and each layer is saved as a separate file.

Whilst I love LN, I think it is nowhere near useful for any serious PDF work.
The software is brilliant in importing PDFs, and I think that is a great functionality for ripping off bits of PDF documents and including them in handwritten notes. On the other hand LN does not (and it is not supposed to) handle PDF documents in their native format. It simply transforms them into bitmap images. When you export the notebook back to PDF the result is 6-8 times larger than the original (could be less, depending on the type of document) and it has lost all the vectorial and text content. Besides, LN struggles to import anything that has more than 100-150 pages and contains lots of objects.
I do quite a lot of proof reading of PDFs of technical publications, and I find that my note is a fantastic tool for annotating draft publications, despite having a desktop PC with a very large screen in front of me. I do not need the features requested by the OP, because the tablet is my secondary instrument and I can always go back to my PC for more complicated things. So far the most comprehensive software that I found for annotating PDFs is ezPDF, followed by Adobe Reader. I also bought LN, but that helps me in different things.
What MouseTheLuckyDog is looking for is probably an Android port of Adobe Acrobat, but I doubt we will ever see one, at least in the short term.

It allows you to write on any doc or screen on your tablet.
I don't know if this is of any use but my workflow is using Zotero within Firefox on the desktop. There is also another zotero extension that I use to sync the pdfs to dropbox, and from there onto my note via foldersync. I then read and highlight using ezpdf, then import back into zotero and this extracts all my highlighted text.

So next time I open the doc willl I see the annotations there?
I've been looking for app with similar requirements. Only apps I found that allow you to export to PDF without converting everything to images are Adobe Reader and EzPDF. Adobe has a bit limited functionality (could use an eraser or full touch rejection mode), but I think it's still the best choice available - EzPDF does everything I need, but its small icons are extremely uncomfortable.

Hey guys,

RepliGo seems to be the best app to me, but it's upsetting when you have to study and highlight a book or some lectures notes!
Do u know some apps which allow this? I really don't like ezpdf!
Sorry for the of topic but how does one set ez to be able to use the continuous highlighter and switch page at the same time? I've been able to do this with the volume controller but that's not ideal.. Using the SPen for highlighting and the fingers for panning would be the best solution (just like an ordinary book) but I guess that's impossible.

Well, I know it's not impossible at all and since ez have palm rejection it obviously already can separate the touch input from the digitizer input. I ment more that it's not possible with any app out there today, sorry if I wasn't clear.
I love LectureNotes and I use it all the time, it's not suitable for more than a couple of pages PDFs though (at least not the 1000+ pages books I have). Besides, highlighting in it isn't as easy since it doesn't save the pdf as text or vectors but as bitmap. This means that you have to rely on making straight strokes rather than making the app do them for you. Besides this bitmap implementation makes zooming in blury and.. Well, thanks for the advice but just as good as LectureNotes is for note taking just as bad is it for PDF reading.

I totally agree, Axel_
Actually just yesterday, I discussed the lack of this feature (annotating with pen, navigating with fingers) with a friend of mine when brainstorming ideas for some fun, hobby coding project. So if nothing happens to ez or any of the other pdf-readers, at least we might have something after this summer.

That sounds like a great project that I think many (including me) actually would pay a buck or two for.
As always one would like an app that's as close as the analog thing as possible, that is holding the pen in on hand just like you do with a highlighter/pen and switch pages with the other. Besides a feature to "hold your finger as bookmark for a page" would be appreciated, think of something like the row of pages in ez but where you select what few pages to include. Everyone who is reading literature for studies would love that feature, you often want to switch between a couple of pages when reading such things (sometime I've managed to do this in ez though, but I've no idea how!). Speaking of which, the feature in ez to view to pages split screen would be very useful indeed if one could set say page 10 and 110 split screen. Or even better, two separate PDFs independent of one and another.
And the thing is, I'm no software engineer but I think that with all the standard features and library one could easily found out there coding such a thing wouldn't be to difficult either.

Yea me too as a student i will only use this tablet for learning purposes. I wonder if i should flash some custom rom so i can tweak it only for writing and reading.
I wanted to try the trial version of LectureNotes, but i dont know how to import my PDF files there and take notes on them.
I bought the Repligo thou but one thing that annoys me is that when i write it detects also my fingers and cant disable them..
@kris234: LectureNotes cannot directly handle PDF, it needs a free helper app PDFView (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.acadoid.pdfview or http://www.amazon.com/Acadoid-Developer-PDFView/dp/B00CPR4L6K/) to convert the PDF file to its own format. Restart LectureNotes after installation, then there will be additional menu entries and the PDF import settings will be accessible.
I'm also a surgeon, and using EZPDF pro for more than a year. And it's more than perfect. You can easily write notes, add notes and photos. Underline and highlights. Can open Campbell Orthopedics in few swconds ( > 1GB, ~5000 pages )
Also you can save all your annotations and sync it with other devices.
Highly recommend this

Search before asking. Someone has likely already asked.
Spell your words completely, and use punctuation. It confuses people when you use "u" and "ur" and "dat", or when you wrongly use "there/their/they're/your/you're".
Be nice. Don't be rude, just move on to another post without leaving a comment. We are not 7 years old.

I just noticed that a version of FoxIt is available.
I haven't had much chance to try it out though.
Lecture Notes and ezPDF are definetely the major apps for dealing with pdf.
Wenn I`m reading books or stuff like this where I just make some single notes on a page I use ezPDF. For a lot of lectures I need to write pages of notes in the pdf script, for this lecture notes is much more efficient.
Recently I tried PDFmax, which is rather new and buggy. Sometimes it crashes and thereby damages the file (ezPDF could still read it but PDFmax no more), but it is way much faster than ezPDF, on my device at least twice as fast!
IMHO Ezpdf is still the best. But it is slow as hell. I think even adobe reader has that facility. Am also a medicine postgraduate so it helps me a lot. For chm files though hyreader is the best till now.

Well thanks guys, i have bought lecture notes , ezPDF, repli go, but all of them has their + and - ... For example Lecture notes takes time to Import a PDF file, and i cant see how can i highlight or how can i set up a highlighter.
On the other site ezPDF is good it loads faster, but the options there are reduced but i vote ezPDF
Thanks again!
@kris234: In LectureNotes, you can use one of the custom pencils as highlighter, choose your favorite color and line width and an intermediate opacity.
I would go further with LectureNotes and PDF editing/anotating. Once you import the PDF, you can set different layers to, for instance, highlight and anotate. They can be in separate layers. All what you want to do. Also, I like the ability of importing pictures, screenshots/screen areas from the brower or any other program into the PDF if necessary as a way to enrich the contents of the already imported pdf.
Needless to say, you can export the final product afterwards in PDF again.
Im in grad school too and use it for lots of stuff. EzPDF is nice as well, though I haven't tried adding content to the pdf. The highlight and anotation works flawlesly. On tip, dont forget to flatten all annotations before copying the PDF to the computer or send it to somebody else, the file will not be readable. Once all annotations/highlights are flattened then is ok.
Hope this helps
I've always had mixed results with pen input on anything other than s-note. Using repligo, I love the direct cloud storage support, but after a few lines of annotations, it starts to bog down a bit and pen input degrades. So I still use s-note, but importing and exporting and syncing to dropbox is a pita. I wish apps like lecture notes and ezpdf didn't make you get so many add on apps and just made one app. It gives me a cluttered and not fully developed feeling when I have to get extentions all the time.
Edit: my main use is also pdf annotating. Damn grad school.
