Metar widget for pilots - Android Apps and Games

Hi everyone !
I'm proud to present my 1st app on the playstore. This is a simple widget to display METAR data ( aviation weather ) right on your homescreen.
You can also check TAFs and quick access your favorite weather and navigation website.
Check it out. Hope you'll like it. Here's the link :
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5GbG9yZW50Lm1ldGFyd2lkZ2V0Il0.
And now is also available the donate version with added features :
-3 widgets -> fancy one similar to the free version with extra data
->simple one with raw text
->tiny widget to save space on screen
-you can save up to 5 airports to scroll through on widget
-PIREPs access from widget
- choose your own widget background and text color/transparency
-4 different widget skins ( one of which transparent)
-5 different colors for the METARs/TAFs list and PIREPs list
-possibility to search for airports with METARs within 50NM of another airport ( in case your home airport doesn't offer METAR data for example)
here is the link
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Florent.metarwidgetdonate&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5GbG9yZW50Lm1ldGFyd2lkZ2V0ZG9uYXRlIl0.
New versions are up for both free and donate widgets with possibility to change units ( SM -> Km and inHg -> hPa)

Hi,
first of all: thanks!
This is the first useful METAR widget that I've found.
Still, it would be even better (for me) with some improvements:
- Toggle RAW METAR (I prefer it without symbols etc), which would also allow
=> 4x1 Widget size
I'd like a 4x1 version with relatively small text (still readable on my SGS2 ), with one hitbox to refresh it and another one to open the detailed version and access the settings.
(If you could scroll it, it would be even better)
Again, thanks so much for publishing this!!
Cheers
Stefan

Hi Stefan.
Thanks a lot for the feedback. I'm glad you like it.
Funny that you posted it almost at the same time I published a donate version of the app which features an additional widget with raw data !
With the donate version you're also able to add up to 5 airports to scroll through on the widget.
However the raw data widget is still a bit big in my opinion so as you suggested I'm probably gonna reduce the size of the text to make it a bit smaller.
I've updated the OP. You can take a quick look for all the extra features of the donate version.
Thanks again for downloading. Feel free to report any bug.

Great app, will definitely give it a shot. So far, only used AirWX, which was not updated in ages.
Kudos for giving us a free one as well. God knows flying is expensive...
As a suggestion, maybe "Closest METAR reporting station" option? For example, my home field, KLDJ, does not report METAR. But KEWR does, and it's closest. So pulling up KLDJ should give a closest station available. I know ForeFlight does this.

I'm also working on this option. I already coded it but there's still a tiny bug I have to fix. I'll do my best to do it fast but holidays are gonna be busy for me.
and I agree flying is soooo expensive !

I like it. I think you said in the donate version that raw data is available in the widget correct?
I'm also curious if the widget could potentially be able to cycle through your 5 airports selected?
Overall big fan, the other app I've been using has never had a widget and I'm glad to someone still pilot apps for android!

I'll give it a go. I have been using aviation tools, but I'm always looking at new Aviation Apps!

The 4x2 is fair enough, but as you said, you could make it smaller by working with "hitboxes", which might need some explanation for new users though.
If you add a big one in the middle that opens the detailed view (which I love btw, seeing the last 3 METARs as well is extremely useful), a small one for reloading and another small one for switching to the next airport, you should be fine and save some space.
Since it is already very nice for me (and will stay on my homescreen from now on), I'd also like to request some more color options:
- "pick your own color" (I'd like... black)
- transparency setting for the widget
Just to make it blend in with the other widgets I have.
Thanks again
Stefan

I'll try it ASAP, thank you for this app!
Friends with Apple/IOS will move to android :fingers-crossed:
EDIT: is there any chance to have visi in Km instead of SM and baro in Mb instead of inHg??
I'm french, sorry for that

QNH
Great widget. Thank you for it. Just a question though.
Any chance the QNH can be switched into mBar?

Hi Grunera. Well I'm French as well, it's just that I'm living in Canada now. I'll look into it. Funny thing is in Canada the QNH ( which we don't use) is included in the metar data we get for the widget but for the French ones ( for instance LFPG) it's not....so I'll just have to convert.
Au fait c'est encore pas la fin du monde en France ?

new versions for both free and donate are up with possibility to choose units. So now no need to do head calculation for you
Merci pour ta contribution !

Checking it out. I've been using AirReport, but it isn't very refined. Aviation Tools is quite nice as well. Scrollable widget though? THAT'S cool!
This is WAY off topic, but I'm just curious if any of you use an app for route planning with a moving map. I've found a couple free ones, but they aren't that great. Naviator looks REALLY nice and is the cheapest of the subscription based ones, but would love some feed back before I drop the dime to buy it.
Also, completely random, but FlightTools E6B has the exact same icon... lol

Version 1.5 of the donate version is out and now features a 3rd widget (4x2 resizable to 4x1 depending on device/launcher) !!
Hope you'll like it !

NICE! been hoping for a 4x1!
Edit: Not quite what I was looking for actually. I like the look of the 4x2 but prefer the smallness of the 4x1. Unfortunately, it seems that the buttons to scroll through to the different airports are no longer accessible when resizing. IMHO, a dedicated widget might be in order. Maybe with transparent arrows on either side for scrolling OR make it a true scroller up and down! That would be really cool!
OR! If you want to get REALLY crazy, use transparent arrows on either side and true scoller up and down to get to the TAF/PIREP buttons! Holy crap my brain is racing with different ideas right now....
I'm no dev, just a guy with good ideas (they are to me anyways lol)
Nice work, and I look forward to seeing more progress!
Just some food for thought on this, I like the transparent theme, but on some wallpapers, it could be difficult to read. Would look good with a transparent black background rather than fully transparent.... If that makes any sense at all.

Right now I'm looking into adding a color picker and alpha slider in order to choose color/transparency of widget as requested earlier.
But after that I can try to make true scrollable widget also but might not work with all launchers though. But I'll definitely give it a try.
Now what phone are you using ? Because that might explain why the buttons disappear when resizing, if you screen is small. On my S2 it works fine. Also depends on the size of the METAR text. Nothing I can really do about that until I make a fully scrollable widget:laugh:

Chome Weather 2.0

FYI, CHome Weather 2.0 works on the VOX. Please follow the link to see the original thread in the Excalibur forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=396068
And click here to download the files needed for the Vox.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2250095&postcount=43
Hello...just downloaded this version of CHome Weather and it looks amazing...great job. There's only one problem, probably related to the 240x320 cpr file because, like I already read in the excalibur forum, there's an issue in 240x320 where the background looks a little odd and doesn't fit the area like it supposed to. But again amazing job...keep it up
EDIT: I've just used a version of the 240 x 320 cpr file already used in another version of your plugin and it works great now
I was just now testing the other layouts and there are some issues:
- I realized that everytime i change the layout, it doesn't matter the cpr 240x320 file i did put there because when the layout is changed the cpr file is kind of replaced by the one corresponding to the sellected layout.
- In the HTC and Iphone layout, it shows always an icon with a cross below the icon of the current weather, instead of showing the icon corresponding to the weather.
- In regular layout, the gold and silver backgrounds don't work well in 320 x 240.
- In the regular layout, in the 1 and 3 layouts, I can't see the hi and low temperature.
Yeah, you'll have problems with the portrait layouts.
Is it possible to fix the problem with portrait?? That is the last thing, that keeps me from donating.
I am so happy with this program. I worked as Organic M's test subject to get this working. I can't say I notice the problem you guys are talking about in regards to portrait mode.
This is what I see:
have the author, removed the files from the location... I am unable to get those...
Can someone help plzzzzzzz!!!!!!!

There are 2 links in the main post at the top of this thread.
The first one is the weather program
The second one is all the files that need to be installed to /windows on your device
Davis,
From your post, it looks like that screen is in ladscape mode. Portrait is taller than wider, yours looks wider than it is taller.
Thanks a lot.. I found the same at the post. I was just eager to get Weather update on my VOX...So got carried away...
Thanks

Well if you put it that way, you'll definitely NOT get me to fix the portrait layouts. How about.. "here's a small donation and small request... I would really appreciate it if you could work on the portrait layouts(which is a major PITA) so this works properly on my phone".
Well then I Only wanted to know if it is possible to do it. But I can live without it. I can look outside to see the weather. You know I made a lot of stuff for the Vox...but I never received ANY donation!!!
works beatifull. got no issues with any layout (i'm using plain black background). excellent job!
the only question i have is if it is possible to manually edit order of appearance on home screen somehow as i could do it in standard homescreens in _home.xml file?

This is definitely NOT what I wanted to happen here. I worked with Organic M to get this app to work with our phone models and he was nice enough to help us out.
This is far from the thanks that he deserves, since the app is designed for an entirely different model.
Why so serious? can't we all just... get along?

I have no idea what you are talking about....
???
As I said I only wanted to know if it is posible nothing more. And I just wanted to clarify that people here are not thankful! I really do apreciate his work. And the work of all the other coders and cookers! I hope you understand my point!
Does this plugin use necessarily the whole width of the screen, or is it possible to customize its size or layout (present conditions, 2-days forecasts, 5-days forecasts...)?
At present I'm using Fizz Weather with Orange plugin on my Wings, in order to show an analoug clock and weather forecasts next to it (see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=89987&d=1212446950); will it be possible to make the same thing with Chome Weather?
So... is anyone still interested in making this work better with the Vox ? Maybe ask some of your ROM cookers to look at the policies in the registry and ask them remove the restricts that don't allow cab files to copy files to the \windows directory ? Then I wouldn't have to make two separate .cab files when I released a new version That, and if anybody wants to help test the portrait layouts, we can make this happen.
Yes it would be great to see the weather plugin fully working on the Vox...that thing about the restrictions I never understood that because after checking myself the registry many times, I saw that the restrictions were disabled and the thing about installing files in the windows folder still remains a problem...

Beautiful weather app for HD2

I have found a weather application for the HD2 that far exceeds the Sense UI weather tab and/or Ageye G-Weather. It's called Touch Weather from MobilityFlow (http://www.touch-weather.com/download-cab/).
It gives you a seven days weather forecast with weather screens of morning/noon/evening and night. Swiping up or down changes the time of day. Swiping from right to left changes the day. It has lots of applicable settings and also shows you the humidity factor, the amount of rain/snow, the temperature of the rain, etc , etc, etc. All in all a beautiful weather app that has a trial version for 15 days of the Pro version. The costs aftere that time is ONLY $5!!
regards, Kuzibri
383 views and no reactions yet? This program is realy awesome.
This app is already known and I think it's primarily aimed at people who don't have Sense UI on their phone. No need for an app when you already have all the info on your homescreen.
Still nice though.

I do not entirely agree with you on that. Touch Weather gives you far more information then Sense UI weather. You can swipe the screen up and down to see the forecasts from noon until night and from right to left to see an entire week. It als gives you the amount of rain that is to be exprected and the humidity facto and so on.
True, $5 is a bargain I have to say.

Second that, certainly compared to G-Weather which costs 9.99 Euro. And there is also a possibility to get Touch Weather for free by posting to them suggestions for optimization of the program, etc.
o man i love this program
when i last hard rest my HD2 i did not accept the weather settings so now i have a nice clean home tab, nice transparent taskbars etc etc and no weather
with this app i got an even better weather app in return without the homescreen polution
THANNNNKS for the tip
My main concern with this would be that two different weather services will often supply different weather forecasts. Dumb, I know, but it's true. So I'd have one set of weather conditions on my home page, on the clock, and a different one when I run that app.
It makes a lot more sense to only have 1 application, and unless you can tie this app into the home page then I won't be even vaguely interested.
For ppl in sweden and norway, the weatherforecasts by accuweather are pointless, they are incorrect - plain and simple. Accuweather also serves incorrect time-info so that I can see a moon at like 10am
So: Accuweather sucks.
I agree with johncmolyneux, I'm not really interested in any weatherapp as long as i cant pin it to the weatherservice in Sense. I did buy G-Weather though, for my other device (TD2) where I disabled Sense...
AFAIN, Sense UI weather uses AccuWeather. With Touch weather you can choose between AccuWeather, GisMeteo and Intellicast, so you will be able to make the settings of Touch Weather compatible with the Sense UI, though with a lot more options and information than SenseUI weather.

the accuweather setting is only for the US because that's the popular database used there... and i must say, that's what works. Other servers i've seen in weather apps work terribly for the US. So what sucks for you doesn't suck for others
Besides, there are two other servers to choose from in touch weather settings. Have you tried those for Norway and Sweden?

Hello, I use this program since its release and helped in the translation into Spanish, the truth is in continuous development and extension, it is true that the time varies greatly depending on the server, but this provided more servers and its optimization.
My personal opinon is that it is a great program.

Thanks for the compliments! I have some ideas on expanding the clock going forward, but please feel free to make suggestions here.
smtrejo, the wallpapers (while they do look good) are default Cyanogenmod 6 wallpapers, so I can't share them with you... but they are freely available here:

Props! very stylish clocks. Love the wham! Bam! widget! theme
@OP I also like the Culture Clash. On a critic of the thread, the thumbnails (as they populate on my screen) are not in-sync with your comments and order.
Thumbs:
Culture Clash (again my favorite)
Wham! Bam! (for a second I was looking for a chinese character in this one based on your comment order )

?
Digital Digits
Perhaps I'm missing something, like this is the order that they populate in the apk, otherwise a simple cut and paste to change the order in your summary might be a welcome adjustment.
Awesome widget! i just can't stick to one at all! lol! btw, what's the wallpaper used for wham! bam! clock widget? i can't seem to find it through the link given in the other posts
Thank you very much bro. Its nice..
Hi, nice work, any chance of the OMG clock without the what would android do stuff? Would look nicer with just the OMG and comic like font.
I love it. But could you make some more themes?
When I try this widget the clock doesn fill the entire with of my screen like it does in the screenshots...anybody got a clue what might be the problem?
It is great.!Thank you for your share!
I love the clock, especially the wham! bam! widget
But could you please make it 1x4 instead of 2x4, there is too much empty space.
At the moment I'm using 1 row for clock, 2rows for picture frame and 1 row for weather. With your clock widget, I couldn't put the weather widget and the there is too much empty space around the clock.

Hi Blee00,
Nice application, exactly what I was looking for. Only suggestion at this point that I would make is a brighter color for the icon. Being mostly black in color, it blends into the black notification bar on the HTC Evo and becomes difficult to see (might I suggest yellow with black strips in place of black with white strips?)
Looking forward to future updates and thanks for the great work.
Very good app! Works just the way it should, Just wrote an article about it for the XDA Front Page, should see it online over the weekend
Cheers,
CK
Works great! I'll fiddle with it over the next few days and see how stable it is on my phone.

That is planned for the next version
I was just so happy I managed to get the icon kinda good looking so now Im a bit afraid to fiddle around with it ^^
But I am gonna make something like an icon-picker so u can have different icons for different notes, also change the default icon.
Thanks for the response everyone =)
Great! I have tried several "Post-it" apps and they were all just too much. I'll see how this one works out for me, i love how simple it is.
Thanks!
Hi, I have been using your app for month now and it is my favorite for creating quick reminders or have things that I have a hard time remembering accessible.
If I may have a suggestion:
So far there is the option of having no notification icon or having one for each note.
Aside that having one for each does imo not really add any functionality, on low res devices this quickly fills up the notification area (Though I prefer it to no notification). I personally am all for choice, so I do not suggest taking away any existing features, but it would be a nice option for me to have a single icon with a small number indicating how many notes are stickied to the notification area at the moment. This would help people who do want to sticky lots of notes or who have a low resolution device.
(A different option would be to make it possible by an option to let notifications with the same icon stack.)
In any ways the app is really useful for me, 5*.
nice app! gave it 5 stars and an enthusiastic comment (look for hvoltage)
i do agree with the above poster regarding the color of the sticker. keep it simple or (if you'll fulfill all the requests) you'll end up with a new calendar app at least
thank you!
Awesome! This is just what I have been wanting!
AWESOME!!
i ve been looking for this type of apps for quite a long time for my daily to do list. Great job!!!5/5.....keep it up!!
I love simple apps that just do what they're supposed to. Thanks!
Also, I agree with Rendarion's suggestion about having an option to toggle multiple note icons in the notification area.
I suggest the next update include the ability to have web links in the title and comment fields. That would make this 6 out of 5 stars. Currently 4.5 in my book. Keep going with this, it will be a good one to have.
Thanks.

I second these suggestions about the icons!
Just saw this from the XDA front page. Great app! I've been wanting something like this for a while
Would love to see ability to add a new note from the taskbar
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
Thanks for all the replies =)
So fun to see that people might enjoy and use the things I've created.
Other icons are coming, hopefully in the coming week. Im away this weekend so I cant work anything now, but Im soon home again and then I can start working! =)
Thanks for the post on the front-page of XDA-developers, doubled the downloads on one day, thats always nice
Awesome Application dude.
Hat's off to ya
Great application, to the point and simple. Keep up the good work!
New version out. Added more icons and custom times.
Sorry for this, but where can i get this app?? I thought it would be attached to this thread??
EDIT: Sorry again, found the answer to that... How stupid of me..

[REQ] Anyone up for a challenge?

Looks pretty cool. Anyone up for it? Maybe as a widget instead of a lock screen? A full page widget our luck screen. Doesn't really matter...

I think a Live Wallpaper would be better.
Do you mean something like this?
That looks good. It's a widget, right? What's the name?
Search market for wordclock, there are widgets and livewallpapers
It's my widget - One More Clock. However, I'm in the middle of a rewrite (from XML to JSON) and this theme is using the new format.
Here, use this apk and pick the "Clock Too" theme... it defaults to 4x2 but you can resize to any size you want if you have launcherPro/ADW.
Leave me feedback so I can incorporate them into the next version of OMC!
Definitely need a lockscreen AND a livewallpaper of the one at Gizmodo. It's pretty awesome.
@PhilDsT: Searched according to your suggestion but couldn't find anything that looks really like the Qlocktwo. Only more or less "ugly" copies.
@xaffron: Thanks alot! After changing the background color to black, it looks almost like the original! And I now think that this is better as widget instead as LWP, because if it's an LWP, you could hardly read the time depending on how the desktop is arranged. So yes, this is really great!
What I notice on my Dell Streak is that loading the widget takes quite a long time (something like 15 seconds or so) after unlocking. Not really an issue for me, but maybe interesting for you.
If I may, I'd like to ask one question: Do you think you could also add a german version? The letter layout would need to look like on the real Qlocktwo as seen here. I would of course help you with a translation matrix if required.
Many TIA!
Thanks for the feedback, BigBlue007! Turn on Foreground Mode for now for best responsiveness. I'm working on the part that gives faster updates on screen-on.
Here's the German version. I've been telling anyone who would listen that OMC skins well, so might as well put my money where my mouth is
Unzip to your SD Card, under the /OMC directory (so that it is /OMC/Clock2German).
the Clock2 German theme will now be available. I don't know German so this is just a guess - let me know what to tweak!
Cool! Thanks alot! Will check it right now and will come back to you with corrective suggestions if there are any.
OK, first of all, the letter matrix is 100% correct. F*cking awesome mate! Thanks again!
Now for the first correction: The current time right now would read as:
"ES IST VIERTEL VOR EINS"
What's missing is the "S" at the end of the word "EINS" (which is "ONE"). The "S" is there, but it's not lit.
edit: I took a look into the .json file and I think I am able to fix it myself my replacing the two occurances of "E I N" in lines 479 and 491 by "E I N S". From what I can see in that file, everything else should be correct.
edit2: Yes, modifying the .json file had the desired effect.
Enabling the foreground option does indeed solve the issue that it took long for the widget to redraw after unlock. What still take some time is redrawing it after changing from portrait to landscape mode or vice versa. But I'm sure this will be sorted out during the further development, and as said it's not really a big deal for me.
After looking into that .json file, I would say that I might indeed had been able to create a german version myself, so sorry for bothering you with that...
Thanks, glad you figured out the JSON yourself! Other languages should be pretty simple as well.
I'll change the theme and upload a new version once I get a few minutes.
Corrected Clock2German
Here's a fixed Clock2German theme.
- Changed default slate color from green to black.
- Fixed position of ZEHN and FUNF.
- Cleaned up overlay glass.
Just found OMC, and when flipping through the themes my yaw dropped at "Clock Too". AWESOME!!!!! My new favorite
