[Q] ICS 4.0.4 (Official OTA) is awesome. Which ROMs out there are actually better?

I've been really, really pleased with the official 4.0.4 for the i9020T. Aside from a couple negligible bugs, it's pretty close to perfect.
Has anyone messed with a ROM that's actually better than this?

I loved using CyberGR, but decided to switch back to CM. Really enjoying CM9. It has the feeling of a more cohesive rom than CyberGR. For example. the specific settings are where you'd expect them to be, rather than searching through a bunch of developer created menus.

I liked the stock 4.04. Before this, I tried many MIUI versions (both original and modified versions like stuffed crustand rocket fueled), nuhetri reloaded, nexus beam...and so on...
For me, MIUI is getting closer to perfect, but the stock ICS seems more smooth and the responsiveness when opening apps is better. I'm also using Steve Garon's kernel with 1.1 GHz , daily.
The only thing I'm missing is the lack of toggles attatched to the notifications bar.

One concern I have is whether rooting and flashing another ROM will mess up future OTA updates.... since I'm like 95% happy with the stock 4.0.4 I'm not sure I wanna risk it....

There are other threads where you can find stock roms. Don't be affraid and try something new! Now I'm using elivisto's IMM76D.

Buddy wait for apex 1.1.0 I'm sure it will be great. But if u can't wait try cm9 for me I had issues with cybergr mod cuz it didn't have sleep toggle in notifications drawer and in cm9 v5 battery! Was really bad

You need to try MIUIXperience (I am using v1 since a like the icons). greatest MIUI ever!! Works like a charm ( except for the lockscreen)

havnt tried out stock 4.0.4, but i gotta say, aokp is FLAWLESS.

I've tried Pete's Bugless Beast and CyberGR v10.
Both very good and enjoying my ICS experience! I felt Bugless Beast was snappier with menus and widgets. However, I feel like CyberGR was more customizable and the kernel that came with the mod supported BLN (I know I can flash a different kernel but I like to use the ones that developers give me since its how they optimized it).
I have yet to try CM9 but will in the future.

cm 9 with reloaded mod. It's very snappy and feels complete and is a daily driver.

ics vs gingerbread?

hey, i have been running an ics rom for a while. Its been super laggy and i havnt had time to flash a new one. My reason for making this post is to ask whether or not the ics roms are stable and fast, or should i just use cm7 if im looking for a fast rom with great features. thankyou in advance.

There are different builds of ICS, like nightly and AOKP. You just gotta try and the different ones and see which ones you like best. Changing ROMs is all about preferences and what you feel comfortable with.

After using Slim for the past few months, I would not go back to a non-ICS ROM (this ROM will probably influence my choice of the next phone I buy, i.e. I will make sure it's available on that device).

While I agree the SlimICS is very quick and runs fairly smoothly, it does lack in other departments. In order to have a slimmer and smother build they had to cut certain things. The main thing I noticed is not all languages are supported.

SlimICS has been the best experience of the ICS roms, or any rom for me. It's very fast, stable, and feature packed. I've had zero problems through the two different builds I've been using for the last week. I highly recommend it.

SlimICS is definitely worth the time investment to get it installed and running. I came from Cognition 4.5.x and my phone is running better than it ever has using any previous ROM I've tried (and I tried a lot of them!). Granted, my IMEI paid the ultimate price for using all those different ROMs (EFS folder wiped/corrupted), but I'll have that sorted out soon enough with any luck.
Can't say enough about Slim though, granted I didn't care for the Lightening launcher that's included. I am using the standard ICS launcher, which works fine and is plenty fast for me.

SlimICS or Nostalgia (SlimICS based) - runs faster than S3.
But I'm rooting my S3. So boajuicing comes...

Give AOKP a shot. I'm running it and love it.

I find that the CM9 ROM I use isn't always the fastest but the features pretty much balance it out when compared with Gingerbread.

ICS is fast and sleek, but I'll choose GB KK4 for the meantime until they fix the unsuccessful encryption bug on ICS. Still waiting though :silly:

I've never liked GB but then again, I didn't give it that much of a chance. I was extremely satisfied with di11igaf's Rom [2.2.1] on my Captivate, flashed to stock GB, then flashed immediately back.
Currently running TiramiSlim RC 2.0 [Based on SlimICS 3.9] after being somewhat of a crazy flash-aholic as far as ICS Roms are concerned. It is super-fast & extremely smooth.

Best Rom In Your Opinion for Stability

Search is broken for the moment, so I'm going to break protocol and ask a noob question which is not only painfully subjective, but has been asked a million times.
I'm currently running Cyanogen 10, and it has its quirks, like it won't pair with my car, I have to turn BT off, then on to get it to recognize. Small matter of using a toggle widget, but stuff like that.
So, in your opinion, which has the best stability and battery life. That's what I'm looking for. Stability first, then other stuff. Jelly bean or not, etc.OR, the best way to get it back to a rooted original rom.

I keep coming back to Synergy 1.7, the last version before it went to nightly updates. Everything works, battery lasts a little longer than stock thanks to some de-bloating. I've tried CleanROM too and the kernel kept overclocking itself to 1.99 Ghz, which kept running my battery down and making my phone overheat. I haven't tried (and don't intend to) CleanROM 2.5, which I think uses the stock Samsung kernel from the most recent OTA update.

Wrong place to post. But to answer your question, most, if not all TouchWiz roms are the best for stability. AOSP roms still have their quirks so if you want stability, choose a TouchWiz rom. I prefer a TouchWiz rom by Scott aka scrosler. But other TouchWiz rom developers such as Team Synergy make very good and stable roms too.

Agreed, although AOSP is not far off from being right there with Touchwiz far as stability goes! I would say the only thing holding it back is the RIL issues...

I'm currently running CleanRom 2.5, and thus far it has been awesome for stability, speed, and battery life. Highly recommended.

CM10 all day er day.

CleanROM has given me 0 issues and excellent battery life though I'd imagine other Touchwiz based ROMs aren't too far behind.
AOSP ROMS are mostly stable except for RIL. If you live in an area that has fringe coverage or cycles between 3g/4g AOSP isn't for you yet. If you have 4g 100% of the time then there's nothing holding you back.

I made a thread like this earlier.
Ended up using AOKP + KT747 and everything seems to work. I haven't tried bluetooth or NFC yet but everything seems fine. The battery isn't the greatest but you should be able to go a day with it and if you have the fast charge enabled then you should be all good. A little underclocking and using smartassv2/sio seems to have made my battery go a little longer and still hella smooth.

I have found. Incubus26jc JellyWiz to be pretty stable. No major problems. I'm running ver 8 (not custom). It's a Jelly Bean hybrid obviously from the name. I can't go back to ICS after using Jelly Bean. I CAN'T, I WON'T!

Smoothest ROM?

Hi, Im looking for a ROM that is mainly focused on smoothness. Especially the drawer, (lagging when swiping between pages). I currently use CM10.1 and it offers the smoothest experience, but when using the notification bar and quick settings there is definitely a noticeable lag on every ROM I have used. (EOS, KillRom)

The stock rom was the one which has been mostly lag free. But as far as Android 4.2 roms are still in beta stadium I think that this will being fixed on the road to a stable one.

I've been quite happy with both CM10.1 (my current one) and MyAndroid 4.2.2 (dreamwcli ROM), I just changed to CM10.1 because I wanted to try a new ROM and wanted to use 3g again (my one is MZ601). I changed the launcher to "NOVA Launcher" (https://play.google.com/store/apps/...sMSwxLDMsImNvbS50ZXNsYWNvaWxzdy5sYXVuY2hlciJd) and put only one homescreen with only a few widgets. That made my device quite fast

Yea I know... I was using WiFi only ROMs because of battery life, but now I needed 3G (classes are back ), and I wanted to try a new ROM. Anyway Congrats on your ROM! I used it for more than one month (I'm a flashing addict, when a new ROM releases I use it, but I didn't feel the need for yours )!

I tried My android a few minutes ago and must admit that it is really (butter ) smooth unlike team eos 4 #144.
But I miss the mostly framework related things I can customise using the eos control center app. Especially the option to choose long press actions for the navigation bar buttons, customisable quick settings buttons and the delay for wifi off after screen off.
Does anyone know a workaround for this?

Still find that 4.1.2 roms of CM are the smoothest out there. Found the latest CM 10.1 and My Android to be comparatively laggy.

The smoothest ROM ever for the Xoom is BAKED build 5 (Android 4.1.2).
I have tried all 4.1 ROM and this was the best.
I also tried some 4.2 ROM (including the latest BAKED build) but they aren't as smooth as 4.1

I'd say it depends on your CPU settings, each ROM needs different schedulers and governor to run smooth...for me EOS4 goes great

I am on it too. Team EOS 3 stable and jb 4.1.1 nearly to latest 4.2, there is no manything to complaint about the steady and smooth, wifi, 3g (my Xoom MZ 601) connect fast and no signal drop so far lag likely zero, there is no big bug insist involved too. I really love team eos because of mention heating fix new issues from end users and go on the new version road android when it office notification from G. They hard working to release new build average on every week I calculated which most better than the older once. I intend indeed want to try EOS 4 with nightlies on 4.2 build. I find out many news on 4.2 but lazy to backup data right now,

Ok EOS 3.0 were certainly the smoothest roms but I'm fine with EOS 4.0.
I've made a downgrade to Stock rom but I went back to EOS a few days after. :highfive:

Best ROM is selective there really isn't too many builds to flash and see for one self.
It'll also depend on kernel set up and user program installs.

I recently convinced my girlfriend to switch to android from iOS, but I'm sorta torn; I want her to have the best experience (which I strongly believe is not stock software) but there's the question of stability, which could be problematic since I won't always be able to fix it, what do you guys think? Feedback would be super great

The best performance with roms I've had: Luna - I've had the best performance with this rom, Jelly 'Beans' - AOSP themed but 100% touchwiz, performance is perfect as well besides launcher redraw lag (fix by taking the services.jar in system/framework from Luna and replace it in system/framework on Jelly 'Beans'), Super Stock+ - exactly like stock except with basic changes that everyone loves such as no ongoing wifi notification, 4 in 1 reboot menu, and lidroid toggles, and CleanROM - similar to Super Stock+, with probably just a few more features. Also with CleanROM you can flash cool Wasabi themes. You can flash Wasabi themes on other roms too but it doesn't work with all. So always make a backup in recovery before flashing the theme in case it doesn't work or in case you don't like how the theme looks and want to try a different one. Also the stability on all these roms are perfect except I think Jelly Beans has a couple minor bugs. You can check by opening the thread and find the "Not Working" section. Jelly Beans also has a link to a google doc in its thread with a list of bugs and feature requests, and you can add to it. Luna I'm pretty sure is bug free at the moment but I'm not entirely sure, the rom is pretty new. and CleanROM and SuperStock I know for sure are bug free.
And for the kernel, I recommend Zeus Kernel on any rom. I have used every kernel I could find and Zeus definitely has the best performance. I like to overclock to 1.6 GHz with it. It's very safe as that is barely higher than stock.
My preference is Jelly 'Beans' and Luna. If I feel like having an AOSP theme I use Jelly Beans and if I want to use a stock look I use Luna. I would stick with stock. She'll already be overwhelmed by the customization it offers. Did she have her iphone jailbroken? If not, the freedom to change every aspect of the phone was not that important before why should that have changed. I would only recommend roms to people who like to tinker themselves, and are willing to spend the time to do research and learn how to do it correctly.
If you're going to do it for her, she obviously does not want to learn that aspect of using the phone, which means she also won't want to learn how to fix the problems that will definitely pop up. I actually think it would ruin her experience of android, especially since she's coming from ios which has far fewer issues. I think 3rd party launchers would be enough for her. It would be better to have her get used to android first, then introduce her to flashing roms if she find stock android to limited.

Thanks for the input she's actually pretty tech savvy, she just kinda got stuck with an iPhone. But I'll definitely take your advice and start her off slow, because she saw my phone (running AOKP) and I had to tell her that the phone out of the box won't be as cutting edge and such so I figure she'll work her way up there eventually, thanks again though

A pretty simple and easy rom is the jedi mind trick I run it on my s2 its stable eaay to use loads of customizations and nice to look at great first timers rom

I think it is only compatible with Touchwiz roms. Not sure though I would ask in the Zeus kernel thread if I were you

Should throw miui v4 on it since she would be used to the no app drawer and then miuis major customization

I agree with this, it was hard for me when I first made the switch, miui was something I was semi familiar with!!
