[Q] Tethering non-functional?? - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Greetings,
After following the instructions to upgrade to JB w/root, everything seems to be working smoothly, with the exception that the wifi tether is angry with me. I have foxfi free, and even tried a few other wifi tethering programs (wifi tether trevE mod) but nothing seems to work. Is it a JB issue or a Razr Maxx HD issue or a noob user issue?
Thanks in advance for your patience.

Hey - are you with Verizon on Contract? No unlimited plan? If so - when I was on ICS my wifi tethering wasn't working (would turn on then turn off right away) so I called Verizon, they de-activated that feature then re-activated it and it started working (weird I know) but it also worked for another buddy of mine, so call and ask them to de-activate and re-activate the feature and you should be good!

I currently am off contract with an unlimited plan. Looks like FoxFi is not supported with the Razr Maxx HD running JB.
Verizon will probably want to charge me for the hotspot, so it may be best to leave them out of the picture.

You may want to read this...

That said, I did some googling and FoxFi is apparently still pretty flaky on Jelly Bean.

Yes verizon will want to charge your for it since you are on unlimited! Bluetooth tethering should still work though! I used to do that to avoid paying for wireless tethering! Dunno if that helps you or not though!

Thanks for the link.
Yeah, those new "share everything" plans are expensive, and losing unlimited data isn't an option. Nor is paying an extra $30 a month to the Empire for Internet access I already have. But unless I'm missing something, there doesn't seem to be a stable tethering app for the RMHD with JB. Wait for FoxFi to update, maybe?

Ugh, just tried to BT tether via FoxFi and it says the ipad has to be jail broken for it to work correctly. This may be a sign that I should just go to bed.

I was in the same boat as you I rooted in order to tether and none of the tethering apps worked for me. After more google searching I discovererd a thread about turning the "entitlement check off" I did that and am now using the phones built in hotspot feature with my unlimited verizon plan.
Unfortunately I can't give you any links right now have to get to work but just search rooted jelly bean motorola razr hd entitlement or something along those lines and you should find it.
Hope that helps you..

Before they got FiFox working for ICS, there was the possibility of going in and setting the variable for the VZW Hotspot from 1 to 0 - which meant that it wouldn't first check with VZW before enabling tethering. Does this option still work for those on JB who are rooted and can go in to make the modification?
{Personally, I don't yet have JB or I'd try to make the change myself. But hopefully this will give those on JB the option of hotspots.}

Foxfi wifi hotspot used to work great for me. Last night I needed it due to an internet outage at comcast and every time i connected windows crashed on my laptop! No idea why?
Then I tried bluetooth and my computer just kep trying to download razr maxx hd drivers. It couldn't because it had no internet and i never got to the blluetooth connect screen in which i could use bluetooth for internet.
Does foxfi bluetooth connect really work?
I'm on the latest version of foxfi with stock unrooted unmodified ics.
I really could have used internet last night!

Why don't you use the stock htc app with the fixed APN (wap.cingular....) ?

If you are already rooted you can use a wifi tether app like Wireless Tether, you don't have to mess with PDA net (PDAnet is great if you are not rooted). I tried Barnacle but had trouble getting my Mac to join the adhoc network it creates. Rather than mess with it too much I put on Wireless Tether and it worked Great.

I can second Barnacle WiFi and also use the stock Mobile Hotspot.
If you are rooted you do not need any program for tether.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980591
Use the referenced APN and you will have tethering available......
I second the wireless tether especially if you have your unlimited data still. Its stupid to pay for it twice

If rooted it also works to remove all entitlement apns from the APN database in /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db
Do you think there will ever be a wifi app that does not require rooting. I had to downgrade back to pda.net. It works but I already miss the wifi app I used for years on WM 6.5.
I believe most custom roms allow tethering without adding it to your plan.
I asked about coredroid in another thread, and I got conflicting reports though.
If you are already rooted, just flash a custom ROM. then you don't need an app and you will also have a hotspot. My favorite is Cyanogenmod 7.0.3 but if you want to keep Sense UI, try Android Revolution HD or CoreDroid or some other Sense based ROM. And Congrats on your escape from under Steve Jobs's thumb =D

The APN method someone mentioned allows wifi tethering without root.
yes by changing the APN you can enable wifi tethering without root , ive done it many times on un-rooted phones ,just dont use it to much or it will be noticed and good ole at&t will add the package (not sure about other carriers)

This is the RAZR HD/RAZR MAXX HD forum. These phones were just released yesterday.
Mobile Hotspot
I have the MAXX HD as well. I just searched on the forums here and found the hack using SQL Lite Editor to change the entitlement check so that the phone doesn't check to see if you have purchased the feature in question from Verizon. I did it this way just as I did on the original MAXX and it worked like a charm!

Really? Do you want to stiff a developer of three bucks for an app you are going to use?
I'm not encouraging or discouraging any type of behavior. I look at it like a free trial. If you're going to use the program for 30 seconds, then I wouldn't expect to pay full price for it. Regular users of an app would be the ones who should pay if they are going to use it on a continuous basis.
I have been using foxfi for the past week and have had no issues.

I can not get FoxFi to work. I have downloaded the add-on too. Several times. The Proxy won't work. My computer will see it for a few minutes, and then it's gone. FoxFi still shows the computer as being connected, but I get nothing on my computer. Same with my N7. I did email the dev, but he has not responded back. Last time I emailed him, it was about FoxFi not working on the GNex after the JB update. As soon as they got it working, he emailed me. So hopefully that will happen again. In the meantime, I'm using PDANet to tether my phone to the laptop.

I've gotten my Razr HD to use the stock mobile hotspot app without a plan purchase. You have to disable the entitlement check in the phone's database. I've used SQLite. Under apps tab, go to Settings.Storage (com.motorola.android.providers.settings). Then go to Settings Storage, then Settings.db, then settings. look up _ID #68 and change entitlement check to 0. Reboot, then try the app. This is what worked for me on my Razr HD with JB

No root tethering on Jelly Bean

I'm on unlimited data, and I tether once in a while. If I update to Jelly Bean, is there an app that will work without rooting? I am currently using FoxFi. I've been researching, and I can't find a good answer. I tether to an iPad, so looking for wifi. Thanks for any help.

From what I've read there is currently no app that tethers without root on 4.1 and later.
If you choose to allow the OTA, I'm told you will not be able to root or tether until someone unlocks each. It could be a little while until someone figures out the new bootloader or whatever 4.1 has for verizon phones.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, and if anyone out there can disprove me, I welcome it.
Thanks for the reply.

I took the OTA update and verified that FoxFi still worked prior to rooting.
Do you have version 1.95 from Nov 20?
You can use the free version of FoxFi to test with to verify that it will work for you before purchasing the paid version.

I have v 1.95.3 of FoxFi. So, after testing again FoxFi does still work, but the mobile hotspot thing turns on (I didn't close it this time). From reading various discussions around the web, everyone is saying they haven't been billed/charged for this, and they haven't been forced to agree to Verizon's hotspot plan. Still, it's very nerve wracking because I could easily see Verizon "finding out" and charging people.
I'm at a crossroads here. I'm deciding whether to root, go back to stock ICS (I don't know how to do this), or take the risk and stick with stock JB.

Not legal for them to charge you for a non VZW app usage per FCC court case if your on a tiered limited data plan.

Gosh, why is it always so complicated with these carriers?
Unfortunately, thats the gamble you take with the unlimited plan..... they have to catch ya first though.
For me tethering is an "emergency" type thing, or a backup. Not something I'll do HD streaming on or anything.
But I'm guessing that before or after JB, the risk for being "caught" and the things that tipped VZ off were the same? I'm just curious how the "Mobile Hotspot" thing factors in now.

[Q] Is there any free wifi tether app that will work on stock, rooted Jellybean?

I've tried pretty much everyone I could find in the store, none have worked so far.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like that app uses the built-in hotspot functionality.
I'm looking for answers to this question also.
What exactly is not working? If its a WPA_supplicant issue try barnacle and in the options skip yhw WPA_supplicant. If that isn't the issue can.try Wireless tether for root users.

Are you sure Verizon won't know? There's been comments left on the apps that "unlock" the built-in app saying that since they did that, Verizon has tagged on the extra $20 a month tethering charge....
This has been discussed on a prior thread on this forum. And no unless you tell them Verizon won't know that you're tethering.

This has been beaten to death. No, you won't get charged and you never agreed to the charge in the first place.
Is it technically possible for Verizon to tell that you are tethering? Probably. But they can probably tell you are tethering with FoxFi, etc. as well. If you start using a terabyte of data every month, then they might start giving you problems. Otherwise, nothing to worry about.

I'm pretty sure that VZW's Mobile Hotspot wraps the "Portable Wi-Fi hotspot" feature that's been available in Android since Froyo (2.2). There are several apps that seem to bypass the carriers' tethering subscription checks.
I was using FoxFi to tether until I loaded Cyanogenmod (on my Fascinate). Cyanogenmod's "Portable Wi-Fi hotspot" feature worked from day 1 without any issues (obviously it's not checking with VZW to see if I subscribe to tethering with my grandfathered unlimited data plan)... I have not used FoxFi since.

Is this widget toggle from a specific app you have in mind? Or is it built into the stock ROM?
I just upgraded to JB (I am unrooted) and am concerned about the Mobile Hotspot turning on when I use FoxFi. Looking for ways to get around that.
Guys, I found a modded Wifi Tether app that worked out of the box and required no changes in the default settings on my stock, rooted JB ROM. It's a third-party app, not a hack of the built-in hotspot functionality, so much less risk of Verizon finding out (good if you're like me and you're still on the grandfathered unlimited plan). Grab it over in the "Verizon Galaxy S III Themes and Apps" forum here. There's two different versions, I used the first one (named "WifiTether_TrevE_Mod_11_22_2012"). Scroll down to "Download:" to get to it.
There are two issues with it, both more or less moot points:
1. Password protection doesn't work, but access control does.
2. When you're done tethering, you can't connect your GS3 to any wifi networks (not a problem for me since I rarely use wifi as, again, I am on a grandfathered unlimited data plan). You have to restart your phone to get wifi working again.

I use a third parity widget called widgetsoid, but I have used other widgets with no issues, the widgetsoid is my favorite. I personally do not care for FoxFi as it has caused some minor issues to pop up, and after removing FoxFi the issues went away. widgetsoid has not caused me any issues so I decided to stick with it. A little weird to set up at first but once you get used to it it flows really nice.
When I worked for Verizon, there was no tool that a customer service or tech support rep was able to tell if the difference between phone data and tethering, proven myself as I was rooted the whole time I worked for them and had free tethering. It just shows ups as phone data when they query data for your phone. I do believe if they are trying to distinguish the types of data that your device is being used, it can be done but not at from the departments or people that you will talk to when you call them.

I dont plan on rooting my phone. (If I dont have to)
My last Motorola and with Sprints standard dataplan worked just fine. (W\O tethering )
I am pretty sure tethering worked out of box, until the last update.
Any suggestions? Foxfi and pdanet not available from Amazon apps anymore. Is it blocked by Sprint?
Thanx

ClockworkMod Tether should work. The link to the apk is in the app description and the in-app purchase for the full version still works even if it is side-loaded.

Yes, Sprint blocked our ability to fownload PDANet and Foxfi from the Play Store etc, HOWEVER, you can still download them directly from the developer's websites, and you can still buy the Foxfi full version key from the Play Store.

I have never had success with either of these working on the Photon Q. FoxFi worked on the Epic 4G, but not this device., even when downloaded from their site and installed.

When I was on the stock ROM, I used a 'wifi tether' app from the Play Store....
I think it did require root, however, there's a ton of apps on the Play Store you can try out.
Good luck.

Same experience here, however PDANet does work on the Q when you tether with a USB cable. I've yet to get the WiFi tether to work either.

Strange, I'm rooted on stock and purchased the FoxFi key...doesn't seem to work. Guess I'll mess around with it a bit...then again, I'm running a whacked system, system.img is ASA 36-86 first release and ALL the rest is ASA 14-15. Whacked...!

Clockworkmod tether does work and for those who dont know the usb tether speeds are faster than wifi tether, I purchased the full version and have been very happy also rooted and unlocked for the wifi tether I will say that the wifi tether is more stable/ consistent than the usb tether as the usb tether tends to cut out sporadically
PDAnet does work with this phone, I used to use it all the time.
