[Q] Will OTA RootKeepr work for the JB update? - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I just put in an order for a new Droid razr MAXX HD to replace my Droid Incredible 2 and I'm very glad to see that Verizon has started to push out JB updates to these phones already as you are all well away, HTC hasn't shown my Incredible 2 any ICS love. My plan with this phone is to keep it stock but rooted, no custom roms as I no longer want to go through that process and I think I can live with the stock device at this point. I was wondering whether I should root the phone before downloading the update and use OTA Rootkeeper to restore root access after updating to JB or hold off rooting until there is an exploit for JB. I have never used OTA Rootkeeper and I'm not sure if people have used this method already so I was hoping someone could give me advice before I go messing with a new unlocked phone.

Yea ota root keeper works for the jb update

I can confirm that it works just fine. I believe this is the only way to get root on JB at the time, actually.

Yeah, that means it's probably gonna be a while before we get a root option to use on JB only.

Use voodoo ota rootkeeper ... update to jellybean... restore root via voodddo root keeper !
I'll give this a try, Thank you.
Since I will lose everything, is there a way I can backup my game progress and things like that? I've looked this up and haven't found much.

did I miss something

I received my new vz RAZR hd about a month ago. It is running 4.0.4, and I read somewhere that it's hard to root jelly bean after the upgrade. So I rooted mine installed a root keeper. But I still haven't received any notification saying that it update was available. Have they pushed the JB update to the HD yet? Or will I be waiting at least 6 months like I did on my milestone droid and X?

What carrier you have ... some LATAM carrier don't have the upgrade yet !

o2's post may be the answer, although I know little about LATAM. Just two days ago, I rooted my newly acquired RAZR HD (XT926), install OTA RootKeeper, temp un-rooted, and took the OTA updates. All seemed to work for me. I'm at Verizon's stock 4.1.1 (version 1 of Jelly Bean).
Verizon wireless is my carrier.

The JB update was pushed out early this year you should be able to DL it. This may be a stupid Q but have you tryed manual update you know settings>about phone>system update?

I think I've got it figured out. From what I've heard.if you're roaming you cannot receive update notifications. I'm roaming 100 percent of the time because I live in the sticks. I just wish there was a way that I could update over wifi. I'm running 4.0.4 still. I'd like to get updated because of the reception and I heard the camera is a lot better. I've searched on the correct download to at least get me too JB but I'm not sure which version is next. I've already got root keeper with anticipation that I may get in OTA update. But it looks like that's not going to happen. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Why on earth can't you update over wifi? A Google search revealed many people update over wifi.

I don't know... I've actually tried it but it still says that it is up to date. 4.0.4.

[Q] Where to find instructions to root 9.16.6xt926 4.1.2?

So I just got this phone and it already has the latest OTA update. Is there a root for this yet? If so, direct me to it as I see links for only the previous version.

If you got the latest OTA update on your phone already, there currently is no root for that version yet. The latest OTA update made downgrading to ICS undoable. So, if you're on the newest OTA, you'll pretty much have to sit tight until it's possible to root on Jelly Bean itself.

I saw that thread before I created this one, but it wasnt definite that it would work with 926 and 4.1.2, the latest OTA.

That only works on the developer edition according to the third or fourth post. There is currently no root method for 4.1.2.

Just for future reference to anyone holding out on installing the update: I used voodoo ota root keeper to transfer my root across the update and that worked great!

Even for those who are on 926, 4.1.2 latest OTA that have never rooted their phone? From what I read, nothing is avail yet.
I too am on the lookout for a root method for version 926. Seems like the Razr Maxx Hd had even more bloatware than the prior Razr Maxx.

Yea... I had a Razr Maxx and used Titanium Backup to remove lots of it. Looking forward to doing the same thing with Razr Maxx Hd
I also used Titanium Backup to freeze all of the bloatware. I took it a step further and created a filter and labels for frequntly used apps that eat up system resources and data. For example, I would unfreeze as needed Google Play store and Maps etc., then refreeze. I saw a huge increase in battery life etc.
Anywho... hopefully a root method is on its way soon.

Hopefully? Iord I've been praying for it and even trying to pay for it lol. I was so focused on getting the 4.1.2 update that I rushed it and found out a day or few later as other people got it that you can't even downgrade to previous versions (son of a Bi***....) so I seriously regret taking the update as now we are on a long waiting list that may never come...

No rot found yet for that update. Always smarter to wait and make sure you can keep root before updating. Or at the very least try using OTA rootkeeper prior to updating.

loose it, call your insurance, hope they send you an outdated refurbished one, if not, donate the one you're going to loose to development and keep the refurbished one )... just kidding!
Possible Fix
Shouldn't he just be able to flash back to stock ICS (With MattlGroff's Utility) and attain root, then re-update?

realbbb is a very sharp guy and former Bionic owner who went through all of the "Cheescake" leaked update issues we had with that device while Motorola was struggling with the baseband firmware in the early rollout of VZW's LTE network.
This workaround is a version of the method we used when you got stuck on a non upgradeable test leak and had to revert to a prior version to move forward.
It is exactly the sort of creative thinking that is required in situations like this when you find yourself stuck by unforeseen circumstances.
This can easily and safely be tested by anyone who is currently on the update and has lost root, since the full XML.zip was released shortly after the update went live last week.
