Questions over Note or Nexus - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I really love the look of the Note and the ideas behind it but I am unsure about this vs Nexus. I was wondering if you guys could answer some of my questions?
1. Is the screen really that bad, all the reviews on the internet say it is a disappointment but is it? Or are they just counting pixels?
2. Can the S pen be used everywhere? For example, if I was doing this post a Note 10.1 could I have hand written it and if so is it worth hand writing it or just using an on screen keyboard?
3. I am worried that if I get the Note over the Nexus, that the Note will be left behind after all the models receive Jelly Bean. Do you guys think it'll get left behind?
Thank you!

Check the multitude of other threads regarding this topic. I just bought one a week ago. All of my fears similar to yours quickly faded away. Yes, the s pen can be used everywhere, and yes it is amazing. It does suck waiting for jelly bean, but we will get it soon. Just know that even with ICS your tablet will do things no other tablet in the world can. Take the plunge!

Like I say in pretty much every thread, this tablet has pen input and if you need it then you'll love it regardless of the screen and build quality. That's not to say that the screen is bad, it's 'good enough'.

Just got galaxy tab 7 PLUS (wifi version)

Curious about rooting and what roms/kernels are compatible since there isnt a dedicated section for the PLUS version, Any links to rooting and roms/kernels would be great

yes, there isn't a dedicated section for the 7.0 plus yet but a lot of people are posting in the tab 10.1 thread. As for rooting, it should be the same procedure and same root.zip as the tab 8.9

just ask away and ill do my best to answer and thanks for the link!
Got one too about two Weeks ago, what do you think of yours? I love mine!

deff the device of choice in my book. i had the 8.9 for a lil under 2 weeks and returned it for this when it was released and im deff satisfied with my purchase
The root was simple using the same method. I wonder if we'll see any development, it seems like everyone is waiting for 7.7. I mentioned this in another thread but one nice thing is how this will play just about any video as opposed to Tegra tablets. And the battery life kicks the Acer 7" across the room, not to mention build quality.
Oh and the Peel software is surprisingly good!
ya i love it! i think 10 inch tablets are too big, a 7-8 inch tablet is right in between a phone and a labtop so i think its alot better. no better 7 inch than this one thats for sure
Came from original Galaxy Tab w/ GB ROM. I just got mine, too - interested in root. my RAZR has a new buddy.
Just got one too... love it.... plus better than 10.1 cause we have exynos
i tried the Peel app last night. First thing it wanted to do is "update" itself, but now it won't complete setup as it keeps FC'ing as it's trying to figure out my receiver. I wish it would set up like the harmony app for my 1100 - it seems to make some assumptions of how my theater's set up and i can't workaround the wizard so it never finishes setup.
Would be better if i could tell it the model numbers of my devices instead of trying to "help" me.
Just wonder if some Droid wizard here can extract HC-Rom & load it on the regular 7" tab...?

I really hope the Galaxy 7+ gets its own dedicated section on here. This is an insanely powerful device and wit the correct ROM it could be even greater.
I also feel the 7.7 will probably not be out until summer of next year. It makes no sense for Samsung to bring it out any earlier as that would kill the sales of the 8.9 and the 7+. It would be a shame if this tablet didn't get more attention considering it is the highest end 7" tablet on the market right now.
I an barely find accessories for this thing
How can we ask a MOD for a dedicated section for the 7+, that way we're not stuck searching through the 10.1 and 8.9 sections?
Also as far as roms go it sounds like we'll have to wait a bit, the source kernel has been released by Samsung so nothing stopping a developer, but we need a developer that has one of these and wants to work on it. (I'll donate to your tab plus fund, if you're out there!) In the case of the 10.1 and 8.9 the roms are mostly the same and can be interchanged once the .boot file is changed out for the correct device, but I think since we're going from Tegra 2 to Exynos if we want a ROM for the 7+ the procedure will be a lot different. Something about the cifs.ko file... Anyone know that that is? lol sorry pretty noob here, I just flash droids and nooks for my friends and expect xda to have all of the answers already...
Edit1: looks like you can just upvote over at another post and if we get enough votes the mod's create a new section for us.
Hi guys. Im just wondering if your tab creaks a little bit when you press the left side of the screen where the micro sd card is located. Thanks

How hard are you pressing?
I just put mine in my chair and sat on it. No creak. (Well, the chair creaked some.) There was an sharp "crack" sound, though.
Doesn't anyone elses tab make a sharp "CRACK!" sound when you sit on it?
Gary
Got it today and like it very much except for a couple of things so far.
1. No charge indicator light on device, charger, or charging cord. How do you tell it has finished charging without turning it on?
2. Apparently cannot view gmail full screen in either portrait or landscape mode. It keeps a list pane open on side of screen. Most annoying and I can't find any way to make it go away.

[Q] Galaxy note or Galaxy S2

Am currently using HTC HD2 but now I want to buy a new phone.
Am confused big time between S2 & Note. (bigger phone size is not an issue).
Am looking for good hardware with features. I will be using the phone atleast 3yrs after buying it. It should be worthy like my HD2. Am not impressed with S3 & so its not on my list.
What you guys suggest, or any other phone?
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions &
Read the Forum Rules Ref Posting
Thanks ✟
Moving to Q&A
was confused to put in Q&A coz this also tends to be sort of comparison between cellphones

my suggestion just go for nexus, looking at your phone cycle (every 3 years or so . .) nexus will be a right choise youll get direct update from google and always the newest feature. unlocked galaxy nexus is the best choise for now.

Out of those 2 clear choice the Note.
It's a unique device, still got great development going on. Much more real screen estate, S-Pen, just as good as the SGS2. If size is not an issue get the Note. I've played with it many times and it's lovely, a lot of guys that I have come across I've asked them how they like it and they say they love it.
Again both phones are old now, SGS2 is older so if you plan to use it for 3 years you may see no official updates in the next couple of years but devs will continue to work on them.

The S and P Modells are really good.
But well the question was the S2 or Note... I would say the same as nikzDHD take the Note if the size isnt an issue.

Note2 ???
When is it launching, haven't heard anything yet about it.
I have a friend who has a note. He said nothing compares to it. Also the screen is a huge transition from any other smartphone BUT it does fit in your pocket
Def recommend the Note because it has great specs and Samsung's UI is very consumer friendly.
Note for sure if it nit to big for you, for me is to big, like tab is..

Might trade my SGS3 for an LG Intuition, bad idea?

So im in the talks of trading my SGS3 for an Intuition. I'm curious to see how that phone would be on a daily basis. But im afraid I'll regret the decision. I know this forum will be based. But im reaching out to my fellow XDA addicts for their input.
Let me know what you think about it.

I've really been looking at doing the same. It's hard to get decent opinions because most people say it's bad but have never even seen one irl. One of the big problems I have is it will probably never see a custom rom besides root. It's also a rather old phone but it can still play pretty much any game and handle anything. I played with one at verizon and it had some lag but I'm not sure if it's the launcher or not. Kinda bugs me also because I know I'll lose the stylus and it's just a normal stylus you can buy off amazon for like $2 (nothing like a s pen). I will probably buy one to try it, I can see myself possibly loving it or totally hating it, I doubt there a a middle ground.

Same here. I've only played with one in verizon. I'm just afraid of the width hindering it in my daily use. That includes fitting comfortably in my back pocket.

Well I've never broken a phone and I've always done that since my first smartphone. The Palm Treo 755p. Lol. I'm more careful with my phones and now that phones are getting bigger and bigger you don't feel them as much when you carry them in the back pocket because it just feels like a wallet or something.

If you're into getting a bigger phone, I would hold for the Galaxy Note II. It's coming to Verizon, and is likely to see custom roms. I highly doubt the Intuition will see much. The phone seems solid, but LG has lately had problems with keeping up on Android updates (I'm looking at you, Spectrum). Samsung, while not perfect, shows more promise in rolling out updates.

Yea I'm really thinking about the note 2 as well but the format of the intuition makes it awesome for emails, Internet, pdfs ect. The only only place it lacks is watching videos, and it's S3 cpu which is like 2 years old already I just ask myself how often do I watch videos on my phone, not a ton how often do I email look up things on the Web? Probably 200+ times a day.
I probably still won't get it but I'd love to see them make one (and release it in the us) with better specs and fore thought across the board and I'd be on it

THANK YOU! At least one person said it.... If you cannot do anything to a phone besides rooting it then it won't be in my hands.... I have to have full control so I can optimize every aspect of my phone cause we all know the manufacturers won't and Verizon DEFINITELY won't! The LG is a pretty giant leap back so I would wait for the Note 2 or the possibility of another Nexus device but def do not go backwards... (Just my opinion)
If you don't really care about ever using a custom ROM then go ahead. Otherwise I believe the SGS3 has it beat in every category.
I wouldn't. The single biggest problem with the phone is the aspect ratio. Every single review points out how awkward the phone is with a 4:3 ratio.
I would NOT do it.
If you want a phablet, wait for the Note 2. I highly doubt many devs will work on the intuition. You'd get better development off the droid x2.

Is LG considered a top brand now like Samsung or HTC, or are they still playing around in Huwai level standards?
What are their flagship devices - are they still just knock-offs of font runners or do they have their own developments as contenders?

Well, looks like people will have to reconsider seeing as the next Nexus is made by LG.
Samsung Galaxy S3
Intuition has terrible battery life and an even worse camera. I do like the design but there's absolutely no way I'd trade my S3 for one. I'm also waiting on a phablet worthy of ditching my S3. Going to be the Note II probably. Not to mention Samsung has a ton of great tablet/s-pen features that can't be found elsewhere. One last thing is the stylus has no built in holder. You have to carry it separately. Deal breaker right there for me.

[Q] looking to buy...some questions

hey guys.
my wife and I are big Samsung Fans. we've got Samsung Smart LED 3D TV, Samsung Blu-ray player, Samsung sound bar, both of us have Galaxy S3s.
We had the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 but opted for selling it a while back. Now my wife has hinted at wanting a tablet again, and I want the latest and greatest, and this time a 10.1 since our phones are 4.8" and it doesn't make sense to get a tablet with only a couple inches more.
is this the latest iteration of the Note tablets? I thought it would be based on the Note 2?
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab/GT-N8013ZWYXAR
looking at this, it's got a lower resolution than my phone, very outdated software (i've been on 4.1.1 for almost 2 months!) and hardly seems to have the upgrade in technology I was expecting.
or am I looking at the wrong thing?
if you can steer me in the right direction, that would be great. we want the latest and newest Samsung tablet...this seems to be it, but it also seems to be a little disappointing in the specs.
thanks!
Well, the display does have a lower resolution, but for me it is fine and acceptable.
For the firmware:
Mine was sold with JB 4.1.1

is this the latest iteration of the Note tablets? I thought it would be based on the Note 2?
Latest, yes, all current samsung high end devices use an almost identical chipset, sgs2, sgs3, note, note2, note 10.1 etc.
looking at this, it's got a lower resolution than my phone, very outdated software (i've been on 4.1.1 for almost 2 months!) and hardly seems to have the upgrade in technology I was expecting.
Screen is fine mate, perfectly good for a screen of this this size, more than good i think, anything else is just a waste of pixels and cpu processing imho
if you can steer me in the right direction, that would be great. we want the latest and newest Samsung tablet...this seems to be it, but it also seems to be a little disappointing in the specs.
This is the latest and best you'll get from samsung, there may be more to come in the not too distant future but this is arguable the best on the market right not due to the added Spen.
I would like to know why my note 2 and note 10.1 dont have same spen features? Why does the 10.1 not have the hover preview and some other things the note 2 has? I just bought my 10.1 and am a little confused. But over all i think tablet is awesome i would recommend it. Thanks

In 4.1.1 there's a setting called "Airview" which does exactly what you're describing.
All those features are part of JB, I bet you still are ICS and hence you do not have these features as an when you get the JB upgrade you will get all those feature.
These more of OS dependent features I guess and hence you do not have it in ICS.
Note is one the best tablets around the screen resolutions looks bad on paper but it is one of the best displays around OLED are good but they have their own draw backs like the tint they give you even the Nexus 10 display is not the best.
I would suggest considering the options you have Note is one of the best, I have not used a nexus 10 so I cannot comment on it

Thanks for the responses. I will look at the Nexus 10, though we are partial to Samsung for its ease of integration into everything else we have.
In response to the comments about the resolution of the screen, I want better. I don't think it makes sense to have a lower resolution on a 10.1" device than what I have on my 4.8" phone. The new iPad has much higher resolution And I would have expected better from Samsung.

And you actually got more from Samsung - it has an inbuilt Wacom digitiser that can accurately sens where the s-pen is. Accurately enough that you can write on it, and it will read (and convert) your writing to text.
The screen res is fine, I generally find that the limiting ability is my eyes not the screen
It is due to the wacom digitizer that the screen res is lower... Wacom don't do Hi-res screens.... However, I watch movies on this, browse the web and do work on it. Screen is fine.
I think the "bigger is better" attitude came about with Apple not being able to compete with most things so brought out their retina screen.... The human eye can't detect this many pixels so it's useless to have a 10 inch screen with off the chart resolution....
If you want an all around tablet that does everything and doesn't disappoint then go with the Note 10.1... Otherwise you are looking at other tablets that aren't Samsung... They may have awesome screen resolution but it takes more than 1 thing to make a brilliant tablet....
Trust me, I have had the Nexus 7, the Nexus 10, the Kindle Fire, and now the note 10.1 and the note is by far the best tablet I have owned. The screen should be 1 of the least important factors when choosing a tablet in my opinion, especially when they are all hi def to begin with. If you want a tablet that is best all around, especially for product tivity and getting things done, the note is so far above the competition it's not even funny. I have installed jelly bean on my note and it vastly improved the existing capabilities of the note. It should be out for the US devices within the next month or so. It is well worth the wait, it is the best update I have ever received on an Android device before.
Regarding the Nexus 10, you will be impressed by it screen for the first week or so, then you will realize that it can't do anything your phone can't do, and you will not use it as much. The note is amazing because it can do so many more things than any phone or tablet on the market. You really have to own it to understand how great it is.

bought her the white 16GB Wi-Fi model (GT-N8013?).
now to find out how to root and update it to JB. it came with ICS 4.0.4 and software update shows no updates available.
with time I can figure it out (have rooted and modded every device we've had, including our current SGS3s) but if you can give me a link to the best rooting method (the sticky seems outdated?) and the latest/most stable JB-based rom that would be greatly appreciated.
I had my doubts about getting the note 10.1 because of all the reasons stated in the first post of this thread. I am a note 2 owner so i wasnt keen on getting a tablet with lower specs than my phone but as far as android tablets go at the moment this is top of the range. Its due a jellybean update very soon and is quick on ics anyway.
Multiview is awesome
The Spen is handy and very fun with photoshop touch
Front facing stereo speakers are nice
The battery life is good
Expandable sd card slot is a bonus (and not standard on all tablets)
I do notice the screen pixels on the note 10.1 slightly compared to my note 2 but its still a clear crisp HD display. (And the higher res the screen the more of a drain it can be on resourses).
There is also a 3g note 10.1 which u can actually make calls and text with.
2GB of ram.
Get the note 10.1 in the same colour as your s3 the phone and tablet look great as a set
Overall the note 10.1 is one of if not the highest spec android tablet on the market right now and for me it also offers a few things other tablets cant.
My honest dislikes are the damn 30pin connector and no micro usb. Yes i have an otg adapter but i find the 30 pin connector to have no benefits over the micro usb and just a pain. Personal niggle.
Also its a very slippery device thats a terrible fingerprint magnet but i wouldnt swap it for any other tablet on the market and i spent weeks watching youtube reviews on them all before i bought the note 10.1.
I used to own an ipad 3 i prefer my note 10.1 but im an android fan
So yeah id recomend it

looking at this, it's got a lower resolution than my phone, very outdated software (i've been on 4.1.1 for almost 2 months!) and hardly seems to have the upgrade in technology I was expecting.
or am I looking at the wrong thing?
if you can steer me in the right direction, that would be great. we want the latest and newest Samsung tablet...this seems to be it, but it also seems to be a little disappointing in the specs.
thanks!

Hi Max-Pain,
JB 4.1.2 is coming along officially, www.sammobile.com has just leaked some semi-official versions (Asia and Europe) already bug-free and very smooth.
Don't forget the S-Pen feature can make you "drop" your inkpen once and for all........ love it! It may take a long while that MS tablet can boast such a feature - WP8 can't hold a candle to Android for the time being........ if I could take a strong side, I'd say Android is the best ever for touchscreen, forget Apple and MS........ somebody could pick on me for this, who cares........ Enjoy
thanks for the continued feedback guys...but I think you missed my post above where I said I already bought it.
and i'm already rooted and on jelly bean

[Q] best 10" android tablet?

Specs would tell you to buy the Note 10, more so if you have a couple of Samsung products at home AND intend to keep most of Samsung's functionality (ahem! bloatware). Even more so, If you intend to root the thing, you'll have a powerful machine without the crap Samsung puts on it, and built-in pencil... Samsung products are made to be rooted and delivered from bloatware... unless you need all of the features.
Versatility and inputs/wired connectivity (with the kb on) would probably go to the Asus transformer, but in some ways one could think that tablets are better off without keyboards, and that a number of inputs and wired connectivity are meaningless in most modern environments. Still it is an amazing product by itself, too.
If you're familiar with rooting the device, then I guess the biggest argument for the Nexus, a Pure Google experience out of the box and early upgrades on stock ROM, don't matter much. In this aspect, add in the lack of SD support, and the Nexus can suddenly appear like an aggravating choice.
But I think that in essence, all three are basically the "same product", in respect that each should be as fast and enjoyable as the others. I also think that this market is laid out in an obvious way : if you take the time to think about what you intend to do with it, what you need, and compare all three offers, one will rise above the others. And if it's concern of buying a lemon, or the "wrong" product, that's stopping you, then rest assured that you are looking at the top of the market, and all three products can satisfy just about any user.
Thanks, great response! Anyone else?
Well, it was of little help, but at least it is an answer...
But I just found this, and I think it could explain why nobody else cared to answer so far :

Nexus isn't mentionned by the OP, otherwise it's what you were looking for to begin with.
