phone is off? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Once in awhile when I go to use my galaxy 3 the phone is off and the only way I can get it to come back on is pull the battery. It is rooted but using stock Rom. It's never done while in use no errors or anything.
Is this a hardware issue?

Have you tried re- flashing the stock ROM? If and when you do that, I'd make sure you wipe data to make sure your starting fresh. If that doesn't work, I'd try using ODIN to go back to stock and then re-Root. Someone else can chime in, but I'm guessing if those two things don't help, then its probably something hardware related. I know its kinda a pain to do but it'll help narrow down why its doing that. Good luck.

It may not actaully be off, it may just not be responding. I had this happen, I believe it was on my Thunderbolt.

Just do a factory reset and if that doesnt work then call verizon and have them next day air you a replacement.

Tired re-flashing the stock rom did a wipe etc and it still does it. It took 4 days to mess up. I never see it hang or give any force close errors it always happens the same way i go to check the phone and push the power button and the screen does not come on even pushing and holding the power, home, and volume key down does nothing.
I pull the battery and push power it comes right on.

[q] screen of death on froyo :(

So this morning I was checking out the new choices in my Froyo leak - rooted Captivate, I clicked on every one of them to see what it is and then I clicked on one that said something like user accounts, well ever since then my phone has been a black screen only displaying the top clock and a no signal bar. What should I do next? Unfortunately Im stuck at work with no programs. So Im wondering what would you do, which Odin should I use? Ill be checkin in cause at least I can do this and plan fixing my phone for later
Im guessing you tried pulling the battery?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
sure did tried the reboot screen.
and the other thing, now the phone wont go into sleep mode so my battery is slowly dying too
try to boot into recovery and clear out the cache...
I did that too and it clears and then i reboot then it goes right back to black screen
The same thing happened to me, but I wasn't digging around in the settings. Like previously mentioned, I booted into recovery, and cleared cache/factory wipe, and it booted back fresh. Luckily, I had a Titanium Backup from a few hours before it happened, so I didn't really lose anything.
I had something like this too. Can you get into Download mode and use Odin to return to stock rom? It took me several tries before Odin worked.
Well I still haven't heard anyone who has completely bricked there samsung captivate yet so I think you'll be alright. Just to be the 1 click Odin when you get home.
I'm pretty new myself at this But I think the only way were really screwed Is if we kill the bootloader.

i will try when i get home, im stuck at work unfortunately, at least i know im not the only one, i was also fooling with settings
thank you
Theres been a few people that have fully bricked their captivates... Including me.
If you got your captivate within the last couple weeks be careful using odin with a froyo kernel. Check the Q&A thread for a post titled "phone-pc something" (Using my phone otherwise I'd provide a link)

bricked samsung captivate

hey guys,
i doubt anyone can be of any help. I have bricked my captivate in trying to odin flash the rom back to the stock js6, or whatever. Any help.. wont go into download or recovery mode.

If you don't even know what ROM you're trying to flash to, perhaps you should stick to stock.

I really like how descriptive you are in telling us what exactly your problem is
Here's a simplified guide to fixing your phone:
1. Press the power button. Does something happen (anything?) If yes, go to step 2, otherwise jump to step 3.
2. Read what Miami_Son posted.
3. Your phone is dead. Mail it back to Samsung. Pray that they don't charge you an arm and a leg to restore the firmware.

Do you happen to know how much they may charge for this? I tried to flash back to stock last night and now have no reaction when I press the power button. I talked to Samsung, but couldn't get any good information from them about potential cost without telling them exactly what happened.
Does anyone know what the process involves? Can the tell from a phone that won't power what was done?
Sorry for the n00bish questions.

Hard bricking with Odin takes some effort. Did you try everything in the thread I posted? If it didn't complete an Odin flash then they probably can't tell what happened or if it has a custom ROM on it. More likely they'll just strip it for repair parts or just reflash it without diagnosing it. Just say that it was suffering from random shutdowns and now it won't turn on.

About the only thing I haven't tried is a jig, but from what I have read unless you have something happen when you push the power button that won't work. I didn't far enough to really tell where it is in the process. I had a recovery screen (2e I think) show up and then nothing responded to a button press. Next thing I know, it won't let me boot up.
Oh well, we'll see what happens with the phone and Samsung.
Thank you so much for all the help I have gotten over the past few weeks from this site.

No app store or play store or market :(

So ive had my mytouch 4g slide for about 6 months. Recently i rooted it like 3 months ago, i had wildchilds rom, but then i changed to miks stock rom, everything was fine and dandy, but then my phone stopped sending msgs, receiving msgs, calls not coming in, and calls not going out. I restarted my phone several times, still the same problem. So i took it to T-Mobile, and i told the guy there what happend. He told me to factory reset my phone, and i did infront of him, everything worked fine and all, calls and texts back to normal, but then i looked through my phone, no Market, or play store. I askedhim wahts wrong and he said maybe its a glitch. He told me to restart it, i did, still not there, we factory reset again and nothing. So defeated i left and went home. I thought i could just reflash the rom, but since i dont have any apps and i dont have rom manager, it just ffreezes on me. So i am stuck with my phone without apps. What can i do to get play store on my phone again. been like this for 5 days so far. IT SUCKS!

Sounds like maybe you are pushing the wrong button to activate the command. Try pushing the trackpad when you have the item selected.
Did you reflash the gapps? I'm not sure if that ROM has them, but that could be your problem.

to get into recovery turn off the phone take out the battery for 5 seconds, put the battery back in and hold vol down while holding the power button. It will take you to the hboot menu. Once there press vol down until recovery is highlighted and Press the power button and it will take you to recovery.

Somebody (and I'm speaking more in general terms) should create a good noob guide for Android in general. But then there's a need for specific guides for the major manufacturers too. And of course, I'd really appreciate any guide including a good glossary.
From my experience, XDA and other developer forums are very steeped in detailed technical jargon with little explanation for the casual or new user. And I know that the focus is on development and not hand holding the noobs. But I'll counter with the fact that they do come here, looking for help. And it's infinitely harder to learn when there isn't a good resource.
Having said all that, I do appreciate Blue6IX's [REF] doubleshot Developers Reference.

You don't understand. I do go into the thing to flash. No matter what option I select it'll just show rom manager icon in the middle and freeze. No matter what I select I get the same result. I will record a video and show you what I mean once I get home. No matter what I do it won't clear cache, clear data, update, install from zip, nothing. I've done this before guys, I'm not completely mew at this, but this is the first time this has happend to me.

You are right, I didn't understand what you were trying to communicate.
I was under the impression that when you were writing about ROM Manager that you meant ROM Manager and not CWM. ROM Manager is an application that communicates with CWM and directs it to do what the user directs, CWM is a developed recovery. They are not the same thing. Clarity is helpful if you are asking for assistance.
Here is a thread regarding getting back to stock but I don't know if it will help you.

[Q] Atrix 2 Stuck on Dual Core Technology Rooted

Hey guys I didn't find any useful posts for this device with the same problem. So I started a new thread. Well I was googling and texting and all of a sudden my phone reboots. I thought well it's nothing and put my phone down, 15 minutes later I was hoping for it to be on and ready to be used and all I saw was Dual Core Technology. I rebooted it countless times to see if it'll come alive and no luck. I did root the phone awhile back and never had any problems with it until now.
I did try to go to recovery and all it shows is the android with an exclamation mark. I can get into fast boot and everything but I am a noob with fast boot so I don't exactly know how to wipe the phone by using that.
So I am counting on you guys to help me out. I don't even know if my phone is charging atm I just have it plugged into my power port and all it shows is Dual Core Technology and the battery is dead for letting it sit on that screen for about 30 minutes. I hope you guys can help.
Thanks,
Mike
Have you tried to fxz back to stock using RSD Lite? If not make sure your battery is charged before doing so. That should do the trick. If you have a back up try the recovery. When the Android with the exclamation comes up hit both the up and down volume keys at the same time.

Couple things we need to know mate. What firmware are you running? 2.3.5? 2.3.6? Or ICS?
These all play into how you are going fix your phone. And frankly your stock recovery is not going to do you any good with this issue. You WILL have to FXZ back, UNLESS you have a backup made in a different recovery system, IE: bootstrap, or bootmenu. Once again all dependent on what firmware you are on. If you can answer those questions, we can help you with the right procedure.
A good thread to start with is this one: Noobs guide to Android and the Atrix 2
It will give you all the info you need on the FXZ and fastboot.
More info and we can fix ya! :highfive:
EDIT: just saw your battery issue. Pull your battery until you are ready to flash in Fasboot. You need to conserve. How much battery do you think you have? Or is it dead? Flashing in FB and having your phone die due to low battery is a SURE way to hard brick your A2.

Oh and do you guys know what exactly caused this to happen?
Mike
It could've been caused by a number of things. The A2 is an unpredictable phone. Somethings that happen to one person may not happen to others. From my experience.
Did you make any changes to any system files or anything of the such? I see you was rooted, but did you have a custom ROM or custom recovery? I'm assuming since you tried to get to recovery and got the android on its back, that that you didn't have a custom recovery installed..
If someone knows the exact reason this happened, let us know. This is twice I've come across someone with this problem.
FXZ should work for sure though. All is well.

No I don't think I modified anything except rooting and installing cheesecake but I didn't use it. I don't remember having a recovery installed either.
What I did was use android recovery by pushing vol up and down and I reset it. Works fine now I lost root though so I'm going to reinstall it and reset my server on cheesecake because I can't add a motoblur account right now then uninstall it again Lol.
I really appreciate the help. I almost hate the A2. 2 phones 2 unique problems, like you said some people experience a issue that no one else has.

[Q] Phone will not turn on

My Galaxy S3 will not respond to any combination of button presses, and the device is identified as QHSUSB_DLOAD in Device Manager. If I take out the battery and plug it in, the light turns red for ~10 seconds, and then turns off. (Device Manager is refreshed at this time, but still reads it out as QHSUSB_DLOAD). It does not respond to home+power+vol down or up.
To get to this result, I had booted into recovery mode in order to install a new ROM, but the installation failed. I chose the reboot option and this is how I ended up. Looking back, I probably should've restored the device prior to booting...

You most likely need to go into Odin mode and flash back to stock using Odin. Just follow the steps in this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709
Also, dumb question, but is your battery dead? I know I had this problem coming from a completely dead battery once, took a bunch of tries to get it to start charging and turn back on. But I wasn't coming off of a bad flash, of course.

I understand, I have the same restriction. However, I think that the device is simply bricked and cannot be recovered. If no solution is posted then I will be heading to the VZW store tomorrow I suppose.

Your phone is hard bricked. I'm gonna guess you were flashing a non Verizon ROM, probably an international.
The only fix at this point is a JTAG service. Also, unfortunately you would not have been able to restore before leaving recovery anyways. I'll try to find the popular website people use for that service.
