Hello everyone, I'm new to the forums and looking to root my ATT Skyrocket. But first a problem I've been having with it regarding wifi. The ability to connect to and hold a strong wifi connection isn't working right now. Even within ten feet of a router I still have the weakest signal and I don't understand why when my iPhone has a full wifi signal from the same spot. Anyone else have this problem?
I did some research and discovered some people complaining that the bloatware app ATT Smart Wifi was messing up their connection. So I want to root to get rid of bloatware, block ads, etc.
I also would like to install Cyanogen 10 (jellybean) onto my phone running 4.0.4. Now this doesn't require rooting, correct? But I want to root beforehand so can I flash this afterwards or will it cancel the root?
Basically I'm wondering if there's a specific order to flashing after installing a CWM, and if I can root and have Cyanogen 10 at the same time (and how).

if your going to put a custom rom on your phone its best to have root even though it is no required and you can run a custom rom with root. majority of the reason for custom roms is for permission access to enhance the phones capabilities. and first thing you need to is root after your rooted you can flash any custom ROM that is made for the SKYrocket and root permission will stay

wrong, when flashing roms, custom or stock, anything done before will get erased, even root, all custom roms are prerooted, this info in my stickies

So how can I root my phone and get the rom? Is there a way? It's the order of flashing things I don't understand. And your guide will be helpful once I know this, thanks for taking the time to create it!

i dont know how to make it any clearer, rooting is not needed to flash roms.
flash cwm or twrp, then flash roms
for flashing roms, read the post for the rom u want to flash

I know it sounds weird, but I've noticed that there are numerous uses reported something doesn't work after flashing a ROM. So I was wondering if I can just root my phone without flashing a new ROM. So basically what I asked is to do the root with my current stock ROM.

Just flash a stock rooted rom.
Yes all you would do is root and it will still be stock. No problems at all. But I would recomend turning off the setting that searches for updates because being rooted and accepting ota updates does some funky things to your phone from what I've heard.

You don't have to flash a stock rom after rooting. Rooting doesn't do anything to the stock rom on your phone in terms of having to flash something else.

Technically the rooting process itself flashes a downgraded ROM in order to do the root. It then flashes the stock ROM over that (at least Bubbys tool does, I'm not sure about what the hack kit does, as I haven't used it personally).
So just the act of rooting does indeed flash over whatever is on your phone prior to rooting. There is no root for this phone without flashing taking place.

Well at the very least, you want the stock ROM, as the initial ROM that MUST be flashed in order to achieve root is a downgraded ROM in which you will have no sound (it's from the Desire, near-identical phone, but incompatible radios).
This is only temporary, as long as you finish the process.
The thing is, at least with Bubbys simple root method, putting the stock ROM back on is done for you, assuming you fully complete the process.
What you end up with, when it's all said-and-done, is a stock, rooted ROM, at which point you can leave it stock, or proceed to flash one of the many available custom roms.

My previous phone was an HTC Aria, and it's the only phone I flashed a custom ROM to before getting this Inspire 4G (which I am considering rooting). On the Aria, after flashing a custom ROM to the phone, I had to start over entering all of my account usernames & passwords, installing the apps I wanted, etc. It took a long time to get the phone back to where I wanted it, but it was worth it to get the wi-fi hotspot feature.
If I root my Inspire using Bubby's simple root method, but don't do anything else, will I have to start from scratch again with installing the apps, entering credentials for all of the services I use (basically a fresh out of-the-box experience)?
Don't use bubby's. It hasn't been supported in several months, and it will not work if your phone has GB. The best and only way to root is using the Ace Hack Kit. Just make sure you read and follow the instructions.
BTW: A little search and reading would have given you the answer to your question. Not to be nasty about it, but it makes the Devs life easier and they are the reason this site exists.

Wow, I can't even believe I'm going to say this again to someone, well actually I can but YOU NEED TO READ!!!! Please do your research before asking a question. I'm happy you didn't start a new thread but a little annoyed you dug up a 5 month old thread to ask a question that can be answered by searching!!!First issue, do not use Bubby's, what part of outdated is confusing. Please take a stroll over to the dev section and see the hack kit thread. read that sucker. than take a moment to let it sink in, then read it again to fully understand it. Please do your research so you don't destroy your phone.

I am very new to the android world. my question is about the version of Lite'ning rom I should use?? My understanding is that I need not to have a rooted phone to use this? Good mine ain't rooted. You have to be rooted to run any custom rom.
download SuperOneClick and root your device, then install the ROM.
I'm actually scared to root because of the 'bricking' thing. I know nothing about this stuff. Will I mess up?? what to do after, if successful, etc.
Do the research. You can't run a custom rom if your not rooted. If it worries you so much maybe you should stay stock. Custom roms are not for everyone. There are risks and there are bugs that dev try to fix but each device is different and if bugs happen you need to be able to find and work out fixes for it.
Those that just root and flash without knowing what they are doing are bound to be mad when they brick their device.
Rooting is pretty easy but I would avoid flashing a new rom if your worried about rooting as it is more difficult and you need to be very sure what your doing first.

Yes just root the device and buy Titaium back up pro and you all good to go.
You can do it without TIBU pro but it just makes it easier
ok i have downloaded the I727UCALC4 leaked update for the galaxy s2 skyrocket and i have a few questions i hope someone anyone out there who has tried it can answer.
1. how is the performance? does it slow down the phone?
2. is there a big change in the user interface?
3. can i flash this rom without tripping the flash counter?
4. if this rom is actually from at&t will it void my warranty?
5. do i need to be rooted to flash this rom?
6. if i dont like this update can i go back to the stock rom?
7. if so how would i return to stock rom if i wanted to?
8. does ice cream sandwich live up to all the hype ive heard?
9. any glitches or any problems? anything thats not working or unstable?

You should use the search function of the forum. All of the questions you asked have been discussed many times and I find it hard to believe that you looked because many of the questions you asked are stickied or are still on the first page. I'm telling you this because there is a lot of information to cover on your questions (many of them could possibly have several different answers) and the easiest way for you to get all of the information you need is to look at what people have already said and done. There is even a "One Stop Shop ICS" thread that is stickied in the DEV section. Nope, I can't believe you even tried...but good luck and read as much as you can. Short-cuts will only get you a bricked phone.
well i have read alot and i think that may be my problem. i have read alot on android 4.0.3 and i have found info that the nexus got it first and this update is way different for the skyrocket. like the user interface is way different. cant seem to find a straight answer on it as people seem to be split on the user interface. thats why i wanted someone who has actually installed it to kinda point me in the right direction on some of my questions. i dont mind reading info but im new to this sight and am just figuring out how to search for info on xda. typing questions in google has gotten me only more confused. ive had good luck on xda in the past and trust the info on this site above any other. if you could copy and paste some links i dont mind doing my own reasearch as a matter of fact i had rather that way i can download what i need as i go..... thanks

Start from the top and work your way down. If you have an I727 I would definately only research ICS on the I727 and not any other phone. As you said, they are different. You will also find that there are no 100% answers on a lot of your questions. What works on one phone might act a little different on another. That is why it is better to read and be prepared...just in case.

If you use the "Odin" version (One click Odin with the ICS leak) you will need to put cwm back on your phone via Odin. If you use cwm to install one of the custom ROMS you will retain cwm. Directions on how to put cwm back on your phone can be found in the "DEV" section. If you use the ODIN method you will need to re-root anyway, I prefer Copperhed's method...again, found in the "DEV" section. Good luck.

Do not try to flash TAR files through CWM. Only ZIP files (approved for flashing with cwm) can be flashed via CWM. TAR files are for ODIN. I suggest you learn more about the differences before trying anything. There are very direct and clear directions for all of this in the different XDA skyrocket sections (mostly in the "DEV" section). Do yourself a favor and take a week or two to do some reading and learning. Good luck.

from all the reading i been doing all day from the everything ics forum its best to flash the odin one click first then flash cwm again and install your choice of custom roms [zip files] since im on gingerbread now. something with the modem and radio is giving alot of problems unless you flash the odin one click first. im gonna take your advice and do alot more reading before i decide. i had a captivate before i got the skyrocket and flashed many different versions thru odin on it but have never flashed a rom with cwm before. so odin or heimdall is not new too me just cwm. but now that i found out about cwm and the way it can backup roms ill never be without it again. its kinda like having life insurance it there if i screw up lol.. thanks for helping me and if i run across anything else im not sure about ill ask cause its better to ask than to mess it all up... ill let you know what i decide and how it turns out... thanks again
Well I made up my mind and flashed the odin one click leaked update of ics. Then used odin to flash clockwork mod and used cwm to then root and make a backup of ics just in case. I restored my apps and data using titanium backup and never lost any data not even on the games I play. Oh and if anyone is wondering this ics update flashing cwm and rooting did not trip the flash counter none of it did. From what I read the flash counter only moves when a custom rom is flashed and this was not a custom rom but a leaked version of stock rom to come. Also flashing cwm does not trip the counter cause you are only flashing a recovery image and not a custom rom and the root didn't cause you are not flashing anything using this method... thanks to all for the help I could not have done this without those who pointed me in the right direction..

What's up everyone. I'm coming from an iPhone and am new to rooting vs jail breaking. I've been reading tons of threads to make sure I follow the directions to a "T" so I don't end up with a brick. I think I'm goo old to go but have two questions. 1 - do I need to backup my imei info?? I saw some posts about people that didn't and ran into issues. If so how do I do it. 2 - can I install twrp vs cwm which is detailed in step 3 of the root guide?? Would I just follow the instructions on how to install twrp vs cwm??
Is there anything else I need to do or didn't mention when I root the phone?? I'm interested in installing cm10 from what I've read.

1. If you're planning on installing CM10, BACKUP YOUR IMEI! Cannot be stressed enough, as there's something with the Kexec method or in the flashing of CM that can possibly cause IMEI corruption.
2. TWRP and CWM are just two different recoveries, they both (generally) serve the same purpose, which is backup/restore/flash/etc. You can flash them both from MMMEFF's Ez-Recovery which is on the market, and it's free and only requires the push of a button. Unless the root guide explicitly says (insert recovery here) is required, either one can be used.

CM10 is really the only ROM available right now for VZW's GS3. The bootloader is still locked/encrypted, so we can't load up custom ROMs. The ones a majority of the community (or so I believe) are stock. I've been following Bean's for awhile, and flashed it yesterday. Haven't had any problems with it so far. Stock ROM's can be themed, except they aren't as expansive a choice as the CM Theme Switcher. Either way, just know how to backup your IMEI in-case it does happen, better safe than sorry.
As for your root method, I used root66. However, that method requires downloading a 800mb file and flashing it via odin. The one that just came out about a week doesn't require downloading any massive files though. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1792342
I have an LG G2x with Android 2.3.4 and v21y with March 2012 baseband. I would like to keep this phone for a while. It is stable, and I do not plan to try any other roms. I am a relative newbie at rooting, and while I have done a lot of reading on the forums, I am learning as I go and hope someone will be patient enough to respond.
1. I am wondering if there is a performance advantage to rooting it and removing the tmo bloatware that came pre-installed. How would I know what I can remove without messing up the phone?
2. How would I undo the root or backup my phone before I start messing with it?
3. I have been trying to read as much as I can find on the forums. It is a lot of reading, and I am a newbie trying to learn as I go. It appears that I can use SuperOneClick 2.33 to root the phone. Is that right?

If you're planning to root your phone I would use the last link you posted for one-click NvFlasher. Flash CWM using that program. Works great. after doing that download the root.zip file from here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255214 Follow the instructions under HOW TO ROOT. It's extremely simple. Once your phone is rooted, I recommend making a nandroid back up of your rooted rom by booting into CWM and choosing backup/restore and clicking on backup. CWM will then make a backup of your rooted ROM that you can keep on your phone or move to your PC.

I'm hoping someone can tell me if there is a performance advantage to rooting given that I don't plan to install a different rom. Also, what is the difference between using SuperOneClick versus NvFlasher? If I root, I would also like to be able to unroot.
I do not believe that super one click works with 2.3.4 that's what I read on the forums. The easiest way to root is to install cwm via NvFlash and then flash the root.zip file in the link I posted. After you flash cwm with NvFlash, make a Android backup of your unrooted ROM. if you ever want to unroot just restore the unrooted rom through CWM. There are slight performances to having super user access like taking off the unnecessary bloatware that tmo makes you have. However, the real performance advantages come from flashing roms and kernals. There are 2.3.4 rooms that you can flash with performance enhanced aspects to them. In my honest opinion, if you don't plan on flashing a rom or kernal (which I think u will eventually) then rooting isn't really worth it.

Thanks for your reply. I would root if removing the tmo bloatware resulted in significantly improved performance. Since that does not appear to be the case, I will probably not root (unless the itch to give a try becomes overwhelming)
