Please, help!
I recently replaced the screen (both LCD display and digitizer+glass) on my AT&T HTC One X. Everything was working for 1 week. A week later people I called started hearing heavy noise instead of my voice. Sometimes they could barely hear my voice through the noise. Redialing and occasionally rebooting fixed the issue. But over the last 2 days the issue got worse and worse. I started testing with gTalk voice and video calls, and with voice recording app. 1 out of 10 times my voice could be barely heard through the noise. And sometimes it was complete silence. There is no problem while using headphones with integrated microphone.
So I took the phone apart again. I found that the bottom, main, microphone is on the flex ribbon cable with navigation buttons and their lights and the plug for the vibrator. This is the part http://www.globaldirectparts.com/HTC-One-X-Navigation-Light-Flex-p/htc748178.htm. (Note that it is very different from the international One X)
When replacing screen I never touched that flex ribbon, it is still glued to the frame; I never unplugged the vibrator. I did unplug and later re-plugged the flex cable to the motherboard. Both navigation buttons with lights and the vibrator worked and are working just fine. But the mic now seems to be dead. And I cannot find this flex ribbon cable anywhere.
1. How else can I test the mic and make absolutely sure it's a hardware fail?
2. Is it possible to replace just the mic and not the whole flex ribbon cable?
3. Where can I buy the replacement mic or ribbon?
This isn't a q and a section.

If I understand you correctly, you are suggesting to steal. No, thanks.
Also, I purchased the phone with cracked screen from a stranger, then replaced the screen myself. So it's safe to assume the phone is out-of-warranty.
I tested the microphone with the app Z - Device Test = complete silence.
Using speakerphone during a call makes the phone use the top mic, and it works just fine.
My next step is to factory reset. If mic doesn't work, then I'll flash a custom ROM, to ascertain that the problem is not in software/OS/drivers.
If nothing helps, then I'll have to replace the whole navigation light flex ribbon cable. I found it here www.etradesupply.com/oem-htc-one-x-navigation-light-flex-cable-ribbon-at-t.html for $21.62 + $14.99 shipping = $36.61 Ouch!
Thread moved to Q&A.

I installed CyanogenMod 10 stable -> mic is still dead. I also found out that CM does not switch to top mic when in speakerphone voice call, as the stock Sense does.
I unplugged the navigation light flex ribbon cable from motherboard - button lights stay off, as well as the vibrator. I re-plugged the cable -> light and vibrator came on, but the mic stays dead.
I cannot think of anything else, but to replace the navigation light flex ribbon cable.

Argh! I already ponied up $37 to eTradeSupply. I got the order confirmation email and 12 hours later the following update:

(long overdue follow-up)
I received the flex ribbon cable with navigation buttons from eTradeSupply. I successfully replaced it and had the mic repaired. However, I bend the (freshly replaced screen) so much that I ruined some connectors - now the left third of the screen shows black and the other two thirds and much darker. Hard pressing the bottom left corner fixes the screen brightness for 1-2 seconds only. I don't want to invest in this phone anymore. If anyone wants it for parts, PM me.
You should donate it to the S-OFF thread. Sales are not allowed on this site but I don't think donations have been banned.

New Problem :
Please see post #10.
Old Problem ( solved ) :
Hello,
I had told my problem in this thread but got no response so had to create a new thread to see if someone helps.
My problem ( I mean my fuze's ) is :
Firstly my fuze was having few scratches and the digitizer was broken lil in the edge/corner so I thought to replace its digitizer.
Brought new digitizer ( 2 months back ), disassembled the device and while removing the flex cable, broked its buttons strip ( volume and ptt button ) and while removing/separating lcd from digitizer, I destroyed both!
So next I brought new lcd and flex cable. Stupid seller sent touch pro flex cable instead of fuze. Had it return it and the fuze flex cable is on way now.
In the meanwhile, I tried to install new lcd+digitizer and damaged flex cable but I'm getting only backlight and no display/image. Sometimes I get thin RGB/rainbow vertical lines and once or twice I got the display/image too. As the adhesive conductive tapes/fabric/stickers got weaker I brought new copper conductive tape ( Like this ) and sticked them but still I'm not getting display/image and only backlight.
I'm very fedup and stressed about this although spent 100$ and Due to this, I able to cook roms and I'm out of xda dev since 2 - 3 months :'(
If someone could help, you will be greatly appreciated. Please please help!
I don't have money to buy new device either and have no mobile phones to play with since from fuze is dead.
Thanks a lot in advance....
Best Regards
I replaced the lcd in my phone and had the same problem. I later discovered that I didn't have the ribbon connector in all the way. I hope this helps.

Hi
I had the same problem last night (wasted 3 hours). Just replaced my LCD as well, broke digitizer was a problem. Anyway, after taking a phone a part 3 time figure out what the problem was.. The two ribbon cables have to touch (mostly likely a ground).. The LCD one and log flex one.. I will try to find you a picture..
Now I have a different problem, can't align the screen properly. The right side on screen is way off.. What a mess..

I tried everything but didn't got it working. Though I have doubt on original flex cable that I broken while removing.
I have trouble with getting new flex cable on ebay. First the seller sent wrong flex cable ( TP's which it doesn't fit for fuze ), 2nd time the flex cable lost in shipment and 3rd the seller didn't had stock to resend so refunded.
Now I have brought the flex cable from different seller and its about 14 days and not yet received.
When I tried touch pro flex cable I didn't get the display but only backlight but once or twice I saw the display so I think it was something wrong in my connect. However I didn't had much time to test the device using touch pro flex cable because I had to return it!
This is what I'm playing with my device since 4+ months. Mostly waiting waiting waiting......
Thanks...

The ribbon aka conductive tape/sticker I have is no longer usable. Its adhesive gum is too weak and no longer sticks. I have searched lot to find such conductive tape/sticker and found copper conductive tape/sticker. Using it now.
@sadik007 and all
I got the flex cable today and after testing, I' getting same problem. No display but only backlight. I see some minor rainbow lines which haven't saw before but as said, I checked the grounding and everything seems correct.
Fed up of this and desired to sell it as parts or repairable...

Finally my fuze is back alive.
Got Correct Flex cable and new LCD. Now its working perfectly.
However, a minor problem if anyone can help.
The brightness setting of LCD in settings -> System -> Power -> Backlight seems to work only till 40% and then after it doesn't increase the brightness of the lcd.
In auto mode, its same. I think the brightness is working only upto 40% and then it doesn't increase.
Cannot understand whats but I guess its because the seller gave me diamond lcd instead of touch pro/fuze. As I can see, diamond lcd doesn't have variable resistor and my friend say its a brightness setting.
But the hardware setting should be atleast full and we could decrease through software.
Can body help me how to solve this problem? I guess its not possible.
P.s the brightness from 0% to 40% is not bad to use but may have trouble in sunlight.
Thanks a lot for all your helps...
Best Regards
p.s My problem is something like this but the backlight is working fine.
Edit;
I don't think my FUZE stops giving troubles. New problem started since last night and today.
As the backlight was lil dim on sun light, I went to try Lumos app. Didn't saw any difference, just sucked at 40%
Today when I booted my fuze morning, it started to do some malfunction in LED lights ( LCD backlight and front penal keypad backlight light ). Backlight of keypad is no longer working when pressed its button but buttons work fine. And also if I slide out the hw keyboard, the home button backlight turns ON. and also the d pad circular light and back button backlight.
Cannot under stand what the hell is going on. If I get any SMS or EMail, d pad circular light rounds fine but if I connect USB to charge, d pad circular light doesn't work.
I removed the Lumos app, softrebooted, hardrebooted, and reflashed but still same problem.
Any idea?
I guess I'm stupid or the device is fooling me.
Thanks again...

Same problem.
Backlight setting changes only 1-4 interval and does not brighten 5 and more.
I had heard that problem one sells his tp which's lcd replaced.
Options:
1) while replacing, flex can be damaged. I do change screens for 6 years and hard to beleive it.
2) keypad membrance can be damaged while replacemnt of lcd. More harder than option 1.
3) eBay sellers sells fake lcd screen.
I handle over 5 diamond and tp screen far away and still keep some cracked ones. They all different from each other. Somehow there must be different versions of these lcd's.
By the way I also tried a diaond lcd and it gives same error.
first 4 step is ok but no more 5 to 10 steps working.
Problem was solved:
HTC P3700 LCD and P4600-T7272-touch Pro LCD screens are different.
here is the differences illustrated on photos:
@sokomind
nice find. Yeah I do see the changes from touch pro lcd and diamond lcd. touch pro lcd has 10 led levels and diamond has only 5.
Part No :
Diamond LCD with 5 LED brightness levels : 60H00130-00M
Touch Pro LCD with 10 LED brightness levels : 60H00129-00M
29 is what we need for Touch Pro but in ebay sellers don't know the difference of these lcds. They ship what ever stock they have. I had requested to send Touch Pro LCD and also said the part no but they sent the diamond LCD.
Damaged 3 times in shipping and when I got the working one, it was diamond lcd.
Anyways, now I'm using the device has a 3g data card and 3g router. Working g8.
Thanks...
Best Regards
I still have the problem as #"10 cracing.
I got a diamond lcd and then ordered a touch pro lcd.
Yes TP LCD is brighter but it is still working 4/10 on brightness. And then I see that my flex cable has lost one of the way. I try to fix it but it still give me 4/10. I do not know if it fixs a new flex. I do not want to spend $20 more.
Have you spare TP flex not fuze?
I recently broke my screen and had it replaced, but for some reason my mic no longer works... I think the repair guy messed it up. for sure the volume flex is messed up as the volume buttons does not work properly. what I am asking is does the volume flex cable affect the microphone? and if not if there a microphone flex that I can order to replace it if it even uses one? The problem is when im on speakerphone the person on the other end can hear me, but when im on regular calls they cant.. anyone else have this problem?

well they said they would and if yo haven't broken warranty i think they will take care of it.
romy134, on international One X the main (bottom) microphone is on the same flex ribbon cable as the volume buttons. See pictures here http://www.globaldirectparts.com/HTC-One-X-Volume-Key-Flex-p/htc748175.htm So, if volume buttons AND microphone do not work, then this flex cable is not properly plugged into the motherboard.
On AT&T One X though, that microphone is on a flex ribbon cable with navigation buttons and lights and a plug for the vibrator. See pics here http://www.globaldirectparts.com/HTC-One-X-Navigation-Light-Flex-p/htc748178.htm
I have a strange problem on my AT&T One X. After screen replacement everything worked for over a week, then over the course of 2 days, the main mic gradually died. 9 out of 10 times voice calls, gTalk calls, and voice recording produce noise or silence. Navigation lights and buttons and the vibrator continue to work. I have know idea why. And I cannot find the replacement part anywhere...

Checked the ribbons, they where connected as they should be. I ran the test by pressing #*#*3424*#*# but still no audio. The microphone isn't recording and the rearspeaker isn't working. Does anyone have an idea what this could be? One of the ribbons as mentioned above?
So, a few weeks ago my phone started acting weird. When I would open the keyboard, my screen would turn off. It did this for a few days, then it got worse. I couldn't even use my keyboard. Then, my screen would randomly start flickering... and now it just won't come on at all. The phone comes on, I can see the notification light blinking, but the screen won't come on at all.
I'm going to buy a replacement part for it, but I'm not sure if it's the digitizer or lcd screen. Anyone know which one it would be?
...at first...no digitizer, no display.
open the phone and check flex cable connection - maybe is poor connected.
If this not help then check flex cable.

i'm confused how to release replace my flex cable
Is there a tutorial how to replace the flex cable with front camera as selled by parts4repair? Or is it really foolproof?
It seems to me like I'm facing the same issues as described in the start post, only in an earlier stage of degeneration of the flex cable:
1. Suppose, the Photon Q is turned on and in operation. When sliding out the keyboard only some millimeters, the screen goes black. If I press the power button at this stage (keyboard slid out some millimeters, screen black), the phone seems to crash and reboots.
2. Suppose again, the Photon Q is turned on and in operation. This time I slide out the keyboard all the way (no matter how fast). The screen goes black. Pressing the power button at this stage doesn't show any effect. Only after pressing it a second time, the Photon Q is awake again, showing me the lock screen - apparently no crash and no reboot!
3. Suppose, the Photon Q is turned on and in operation. I turn the screen off by pressing the power button once, then I wait for some seconds and slide out the keyboard all the way. When I turn on the screen this time by pressing the power button, the lock screen appears as expected and everything is working fine.
All these scenarios also work the other way round, i.e. you assume the keyboard is already slid out all the way and you perform the slide-in movement. Also, this is not a software issue as it behaves analogously during reboot or in recovery mode. Furthermore, I opened my phone. The flex cable was connected properly and I couldn't see any damage to the flex cable. So it seems to be an internal loose connection of the flex cable.
Has anyone come across this before? I was watching a video on MX Player not too long ago, and it seems to have resulted in a permanent colourful static for the phone.
I can't really tell if it's doing anything, but when I go through the motions of resetting it or booting into bootloader, the screen does not change at all.
Interestingly the volume buttons are still working, and if I press the area of the screen where I think the buttons are (e.g., the back/home/programs buttons) I get the right vibrations. Which leads me to believe my screen is broken, and that it's a hardware fault. I'm hoping pretty hard this isn't the case, as my phone is only two months old and it was a replacement for a 6 month old Nexus 4 which had stopped charging.
Anyone come across this before? I'm hoping there's a kind of solution somewhere out there... To make matters worse I bought this phone via a parallel importer AND I'm currently overseas and won't be back till the end of January.
Sigh. Photo of screen is as attached - please forgive the terrible quality as I had to use my laptop webcam.
Thanks in advance, everyone!

Only time I've seen something like this was when my integrated graphics card on my desktop overheated, everything still worked, but colorful static everywhere. I'd let it cool down for a while, chances are it was pretty hot when it did that, and see if high temps might make it happen again.
I just had the same thing happen. Phone had been in my pocket and I had just taken it out to check the time maybe 10 minutes before it happened. The only difference with mine was I bumped into a table and hit the phone in my pocket. It does have a case on it and there is no sign of damage at all such as a cracked screen or anything. The static only lasts for a few seconds and thats right after I force it to reboot. After that it just goes to an all black screen. My LED indicator light is still flashing at me telling me I have an email though so I'm not sure what the deal is.
Were you able to resolve this issue? I too just experienced this issue as well and my phone is currently unusable. Thanks!
Do a full wipe as in wiping the entire phone and making it as if you just got it out of the box. if it persist RMA

Hi, I broke my screen (really bad smash) and had have this static on my new screen. The new screen was apparently fully tested. When using the slim port i can display on my TV and the digitizer works fine, its just this same colour static on the handset. I am now waiting for a replacement USB flex (it was a bit bent in the break) and i expect the new USB flex will fix it. If not then its a bad screen.
Will post the results when i get the parts
Fixed!
Hi,
My new USB flex arrived today. I installed it and found my screen is working perfectly.
The first pic is the same colour static that the op had.. Second one is the USB flex board / ribbon. Ebay for 20 Euro. Please remember that USA users are LG D820 and Europe/rest of works LG D821. I think its important for this part as the aerials connect here ans they are different in USA.
Good luck everyone

Static screen and freezing
Hi All,
Need help here with my 6 month old Nexus 5. It has been pretty good with no issues but since last evening, it started behaving weird. The chronological events are as follows
1. While browsing on Chrome some websites were not scrolling intermittently. This was only in the browser.
2. After about 10 mins of the above behavior the entire phone froze and didn't release itself. I had to force reboot by holding the power button down for about 10 secs. When the screen came on, it was the static screen
3. I again pressed the power button a couple of times but no use. Held it again for 10 secs, then phone rebooted and everything was fine.
4. Continued to use the phone and everything was normal until this afternoon, when the phone again froze while browsing a website
5. Since then the phone screen shows the static and if I press the power button once, the screen switches off and press again the screen comes on with the display showing properly. I can now only perform one touch which is registered and the screen freezes. If I switch off and on again the next screen / action is shown which is the action I did in the previous touch. Every time it registers one touch and I have to switch off and on again to see the next screen. Sometimes the phone just shows static and I have to wait a few seconds (30 sec) before using it again.
6. If I make a call to my phone, I hear one ring and then it is busy tone like I've cancelled the call. However the phone does not show the incoming call.
My phone has been intact and is well protected with screen guards and case. There is no physical misuse / abuse of the phone. I managed to shut down the phone and enter recovery. Here as well it only registered one touch, though the phone was processing and moving the next step. I somehow managed to initiate a factory reset through the settings, but no use.
Now in about 2-3 hrs the phone has become completely useless. I'm uncertain what the problem is, all my touch inputs are registered and processed. The screen just doesn't refresh to the next and requires a power off/on. I picked up this phone in the US and now in India. So I can't RMA the phone and I don't have warranty for this in India.

Hi All,
Need help here with my 6 month old Nexus 5.
Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

I'm getting the same issue. Tried soft and hard reset. Opened her up and seated all cables. The issue is still persisting. Is replacing the USB flex the way to go?
Hey I have a nexus 5 32GB and the screen started to do weird things and now it isn't working at all. Its the same in recovery mode also do I think that it's not a software problem.
I think there is an issue with the motherboard. Please help me out.
Thanks in advance.

Looks like the daydream function. You can turn it off in Settings>Display>Daydream
Sent from my Nexus 5 Unchained using XDA Free mobile app
Same thing, Screen now black. Won't turn on...
Hey everyone, I know that this is kind of late to the thread, but I have what I believe is the same problem as everybody else here. I had my Nexus 5 in my pocket for maybe five minutes, and in between the times that I put it in my pocket and took it out again to reply to a text, the screen went all colorful and static on me (Red tint, almost as if I had twilight on, but I didn't). I tapped the back, and the colors went back to normal, but the digitizer wasn't responding to touch. Then, It went black. No color, the speakers weren't working, neither was the backlight on the display. I took it apart, and figured its either the USB flex cable (which looked frayed), or the mainboard. If its the USB flex cable, then I know I can repair it. If it's the mainboard... well, as a sixteen year-old who has no current source of income, I'm out of a $400 phone.
Pictures attatched. Thanks!

I took the phone the LG service center and the technician seemed to know this issue and immediately said that the USB flex cable needs to be changed. The entire fix took about 5 mins and the phone is working fine since then.
Sorry for the delayed response.
I hate to necro up this thread but I'm having similar problems to the op with my nexus 5. About two weeks ago I saw my screen get grainy just like the op and many others mentioned and then the screen went completely black. The screen still "turns on" but it's just black with the backlight on. I can hear notifications and other things and I'm hoping that all I need to replace is just the flex cable. If it's a problem with the logic board then I'm screwed basically.
Anyway that's my story. Bought the flex cable and it'll be here by tuesday so I'll find out then if I'm lucky or not. Fingers crossed.

Hey man, did you ever try this out and get it to work? I have the same problem and was thinking of trying this out but wanted confirmation first.
Thanks!
Just wanted to post here to say that this thread just saved me a lot of money!
Had the same issue (static showing on the screen). Local phone repair shop told me it needed a new screen, without even looking at it(!), and it would be £120 + labour. Told them I would think about it, and came home and did some more research, found this thread. Ordered a replacement USB flex cable from eBay, and fit it by following a YouTube tutorial, and now the phone is back working fine. brilliant!
Thanks xda!
I had a problem where my screen looked like an old CRT TV with particles flashing all over on anything with a static dark background. Any ideas
Umm... hi
I have two Nexus 5, one which is out of warranty and one brand new one.
So the first one I stopped using because the screen is acting funny.
Meaning suddenly turning black, image flickering, touch not working.
Sometimes tapping on the back of the phone helps, but I do forced reboots alot to fix it.
Also, mic is dead and speaker tends to ask for a tap to make it work here and there.
My second phone was meant as replacement, but after two weeks the backlight
of the entire right screen half started to go on and off several times a day. Tapping helped,
but I just returned to it get it replaced.
On youtube, you will find a huge amount of videos showing how various of those screen
and touch and reception and mic issues can be solved by simply replacing the 20$ daughterboard.
The one connecting the bottom half of the phone with the mainboard. This includes display, mic, speaker
and more. I intend to do that aswell on my broken-af first Nexus, but before that, I thought going to XDA
asking if anyone here knows why this component is so receptible to damage. It's not a moving part
and does not run near the CPU, so I really wonder why this part is failing to incredible often. Anyone can
tell me more about that?
Thanks
