RAZR MAXX HD & Safestrap - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a rooted VZW maxx HD that I am trying to load safestrap on. I have read through multiple forums searched high and low and can't solve my issue. I can install v 3.05 on my phone. Click install recovery. Installation successful. Reboot and the safestrap boot screen never comes up. I am on stock rooted ICS by the way. Any help is appreciated. I want to install custom roms.

Did you go into super user and update binaries?

Yes I have spent hours on this phone. I am new to Motorola. Not as hard on HTC devices

I also had an issue with safestrap. I was running the JB leak and for some reason when restored root with Voodoo I never really got root back. I could gain root access with root explorer but all other apps including safestrap would not work. I had to use mattgrolfs utility to get back to stock
After I upgraded to the the newest Ota I installed safestrap again and it is now working fine. You might just want to start over and begin from stock.

I haven't taken any updates. I'm on stock ICS not the leak. Problem is when I reboot I never see the safestrap boot screen. I appreciate any pointers

That is weird. I also have the VZW Maxx HD with root and stock ICS. Safestrap installed without issues. I currently run my phone on one of the Rom Slots because zip updates are still disabled on the stock slot. Did you give it superuser permissions before rebooting the phone by opening the app?

Yeah I followed all steps. I hit grant SU permission when installed and reboot to the droid screen. I have uninstalled removed from phone reinstalled with the same result

If safestrap has been granted permissions through SU and you are still having issues, best thing to do IMO is just do factory reset and then reroot and install safestrap. That usually works for me.

Thanks I will try that later this evening. Sorta sucks since I just unlocked my mobile hotspot

Ss3 is still beta for the HD I believe
Most people are having good results if they start from scratch thou
Fast boot from the the beginning
Good luck

was there ever a resolution to this?
I have a Razr M. I was running stock jb until today, when I
- factory reset
- rooted (successfully I think)
- installed safestrap 3.05 and “Installed Recovery”
however I can’t get any safestrap splash screen to show up on reboot. is there anything I need to do?

Lost Root

I'm running Scott's CM10.1 build, and have been since early December. My Infuse has been rooted for over a year.
Last night while trying to use MyBackupPro to back up my apps and data to prepare to flash a new ROM, I kept getting a notice that Superuser was not responding. So, I disabled Superuser and then re-enabled it and tried again. Still nothing. Went and cleared cache for Superuser and tried again. Nothing.
Tried some of my other apps that require root access, and they wouldn't work either. Downloaded a root checker app from the Play Store, and apparently I no longer have root...
How do I go about fixing this? I'm not sure what caused me to lose root all of a sudden, and I'd like to be able to back up my apps before I flash a new ROM.
I had that issue also, in order to fix it, I had to revert back to stock, then do all the upgrades over again with the added step of installing 4.1 before installing 4.2/10.1...for some reason it's happened to a few of us on here, there might be another fix if you search around, but this is what worked for me...I believe some people were able to work around it with a different super user app, that didn't work for me but is something else you can search
Sent from Myfuse running a Jellybean rom courtesy of Scott.Hart.bti's way better attention span then I'll ever have...
Thanks man. Didn't want to go through that whole mess, so I ended up just flashing Scott's BeanStalk ROM without doing a factory reset since that ROM comes pre-rooted. Everything went smoothly. Now I've got root again and can back up my apps properly, and then re-install this ROM after wiping my system to get rid of any bugs.
Mods can close this.
I'm surprised no one has mad a flashable root zip for this device...its not that hard and would be perfect for scenarios like this...I may make one later today if time allows...just gotta add a couple files to the zip

Keeping Root After 4.1.2 Update With OTA Root Keeper?

As title says - who has been successful keeping root with Voodoo?

Yeah worked for me too
Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using xda app-developers app
Upgrading to 4.1.2 and keeping root worked for me as well but has been causing me issues with 4G data connection. When I first upgraded and kept root my phone would only pick up 3G. I went to Verizon and had give me a new SIM card which fixed my issue and brought my 4G back but now I have the issue where I lose 4G during phone calls. This issue did not occur before 4.1.1.
Didn't work for me, went to click restore root and it there wasn't any backup but I know there was cause I created the backup just before restoring the stock recovery. Now I have no root and it won't let me downgrade.

did you forget to do the temp unroot before taking the update? that the common mistake most are making.
even me, thanxxx
................................................................................................
I am running 4.1.1 on my rooted DROID RAZR MAXX HD and want to take the 4.1.2 OTA update.
I use Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper Temp Un-Root which successfully makes my device unrooted. However, once I reboot, the phone is rooted again. I thought Voodoo would turn off root until I explicitly go back and Restore Root.
Am I wrong? Is Voodoo supposed to turn off root only until the phone restarts? If so, can I use Voodoo to temporarily un-root, and then immediately install the OTA 4.1.2 update without restarting my phone?
Or, is something wrong with my Voodoo installation since the temp un-root does not survive a restart?

[Q] A complete backup?

My phone has root using MotoChopper but I am still using the stock ROM. I really don't want to go through the effort of custom ROM.
The nice thing about the Galaxy S3 was the Kies software that backed up everything important. Is there something like that for Motorola? I have an SD car installed with plenty of space.
Is there something in the Motorola recovery menu that would allow me to perform a backup, or an app? I have titanium backup installed by the way.
Search for recoveries
As you know TB doesn't do a full backup. But as long as you are rooted there are options open to you other than getting another rom installed to do a full Nandroid Backup. Do a search for "Recoveries". I have preferred CWM http://www.clockworkmod.com/ with my past phones but there are a few more you may want to peruse before flashing one.
The great thing about recoveries is that you can Nandroid backup your current rom before flashing a new one. And if you don't like the new one, or it has issues you don't like, just use the recovery to flash back.
I hope this helps you in some way.

I've used CWM with previous Android phones. Yes I liked it. A few follow ups ....
1. If all I care about was retoring apps and their settings to the Stock Moto ROM -- could I trust TB for that purpose?
2. Supposing I had the bootloader unlocked -- could I install CWM and just keep the ROM that I have or would I be forced to install a custom ROM?

Yes, but if all you want is app backups with the ability to restore (Not data just apps) I prefer appsaver. But if you want data as well then TB is superb.

Having root and or an unlocked boot loader (As phones used to come with) does not mean you have to use any other rom. I plan on keeping the stock rom on my phone as I like it over the present roms.
Remember, you will never be forced to use any rom. With the unlocked boot loader you can use any you choose including stock.
---Edit---
CWM does not yet have a stock recovery for the XT926, give it time and they will. You did not state your exact phone version but I would guess it is the 925/926.
As I just rooted my self I am also looking for a recovery to do a Nandroid backup.
I did find this thread that has some answers IF your boot loader is unlocked...

Nope, that JUST allows root access. To unlock the boot loader you need a tad more. Search this forum for droid razr HD utility by Mattlgroff. It has every thing you need to root (And that can be undone) and unlock the boot loader (THIS CAN NOT be undone). Linky
--FYI--
I do not recommend flashing the 4.1.2, but as I said if you are unlocked you can do what ever you want. Being just rooted (Or even not rooted) you can flash 4.0.4 and 4.1.1, when you flash to 4.1.2 you can NOT go back to 4.0.4 or 4.1.1 with out an unlocked boot loader.
And the droid razr HD utility has the CWM custom recovery included!
Bonus!
Any more questions that I can answer before I go to sleep tonight?
Thanks for everything you did -- you deserve sleep. I already had 4.1.2 when i ran MotoChopper. I don't plan on going back or doing a custom recovery or custom ROM. I know I am not using the droid to its full potential however -- i'm just thankful to end the 2 months of banging my head against a wall. As I mentioned on another thread I bought the iPhone 5 on verizon 4 times and returned it all 4 times. I bought the S3 for Verizon once and returned it. 3 of the iPhones and the S3 had chronic wifi issues. I was beginning to think it was me. It was not. With no other variables in my work flow changing -- the Razr HD had none of these problems. I'm sure the M and the Maxx HD would have been fine also. However, I wanted something slightly better than the M and I would have had a hard time squeezing the Maxx HD with a case into my shirt pockets.

Just install twrp as your recovery and make a full backup that way. unlocked bootloader required.
Yes you can trust tibu for app backup and recovery. I flash several times per week and it's the app I use and trust.

I understand where you're coming from. I used to use cmw since the og droid. Twrp has supplanted it fully imo. all of the devs prefer it and it's easy to use. Nonetheless both exist for the xt926. Use this utility for the recovery of your choice.

I think I should have screwed this one up -- and should have done the custom recovery to make a FULL backup. I backed up all my apps using TB. did a complete wipe -- not just a system reset from Settings but -- a motorola AP fastboot style wipe -- with the stock 4.1.2. I re-rooted. Then logged in to Play installed TB.
I think the problem i created occurred when I tried to reinstall system stuff -- not just user apps. I have stock recovery, root at this point. After restarting once i restored those apps and their data I am perpetually stuck on the Droid eye.

Ok -- I reflashed a stock recovery under AP Fastboot, re-rooted, and then installed TB, doing a 'restore missing apps' - meaning the user installed apps. hopefully ill be ok now.

You can disable apps in settings, but that's only certain ones and not system services like the updating one.
I want to switch to a 4.2.2 ROM ASAP. Is the CM 10.1 stable as a daily driver with minimum bugs and the same battery life?
Ya, cm 10.1 has better bat life. I liked liquidsmooths settings better though. Carbon doesn't seem to be as stable atleast for me. But it seems like no one else is having the problems I'm having. I recommend twrp recovery. Run it, see what you think. PM me if you need help.

Cant really comment on the best one. I liked Carbon, PAC and CM10.2 when I tried them. I think most of the kinks have been worked out of the AOSP based roms. Though I usually stick with modified stock roms when not using a nexus device. I usually have the best luck, stability wise, with them.
BTW I love your avatar. I watched that movie all the time when I was a kid. :highfive:
I took an xt 925 today, but i have some knowledgment from my Razr I, which is + - the same procedure/flash.
I want to install some custom roms, so basically all i have to do is unlock my bl, install a custom recovery and try out?
I'm asking that, because i'm on jelly bean, but its a carrier based firmware, and i dont know if this model got any limitation which break me up.
I apparently cannot get any ROM to install properly. I installed CyanogenMod 10.1, and it worked fine. The phone booted fine, but then I installed another ROM, and I CAN'T get past the Warning Bootloader Unlocked screen at all. I've tried a million times to get into recovery and then I finally do. Then I finally get in there, and I mount system, format twice, and I install a ROM.... Doesn't work. I'm still stuck at the bootloader unlocked screen.
What do I do?!

First off, don't mount system. When you flash it will automatically mount it. You need to wipe cache, and dalvic cache. Generally you also need to wipe data as well. You don't need to wipe more than once. Then flash the ROM.

The thing is, I couldn't get back into recovery at all. I had to try like 50 times holding down the buttons to finally get it to even boot to the recovery select screen, and even then it wasn't a sure thing if I were going to get it to boot into recovery. I flashed another ROM, and it still didn't work. I read on the Droid forums that you need to mount system first and then flash, so I tried that and my phone booted up right away.

Myriad of issues and questions

Alright, I'll start from the beginning. I was on 4.4, unlocked via sunshine and was rooted, updated to 4.4.4 with all root and wp off. Life was good. Got a bit bored and flashed Exodus, and then it hit the fan. GPS wasn't working and I did the clear radio and modem commands in fastboot, which worked. Used the phone for about 12 hours, decided to do a routine "post rom setup" cache clear in TWRP....phone toasted. It screwed up my system partition (no idea how), and I couldn't repair the partition in TWRP for the life of me. Couldn't re-flash exodus, couldn't even wipe the system, couldn't restore my stock backup. Couldn't get my device to be recognized by adb and fastboot to reflash twrp, so I figured I'd rsd back to stock since I am unlocked and can just fastboot twrp (when I have more time to screw with it) and flash supersu to root again. So here are my questions:
I'm now on 4.4.4, su6-7.2....I still am unlocked but unrooted, so I want to confirm I can fasboot flash TWRP and then flash supersu to root? Or is that not an option now?
Also, and ironically, my gps does not work at all. WTF? I assumed stock recovery wasn't there since I'm unlocked and originally flashed TWRP (didn't boot it), and I was right, no stock recovery. It just says "No Command". So I can't clear cache from there.
Any recommendations to get GPS back? I'll try the fasboot flash twrp in the near future as well. Totally my fault for even having the itch to flash Lollipop, but then some weird issues popped up that I've never encountered before, and I still don't know why my system partition got wasted like that.
So you did rsd back to stock. Your boot loader is still unlocked. You could or want to flash twrp again to gain root and just use xposed.
Have you tried a GPS fix from the play store or just a GPS app to see if you could get a lock on GPS?

Yeah, pretty much had to rsd. That's what I'm going to do, stay on Kit Kat with xposed like I was before.
GPS is now working. Seriously, I have no idea why so intermittent. I messed with GPS for a good hour before posting, then about 10 minutes after I posted, one final try, it started picking up satellites and locked. Now it's quick to lock. My issues over the last 24 hours still have me semi-stumped as to why, since they aren't consistent! Oh well. Next step is twrp later. I think I'll try the ghost patch one in Android development.

I'm sure other people are having issues with 5.1 and not posting it. Same reason why Verizon has not released 5.1 for the droid series phones either.
My WiFi likes to disconnect from time to time and all I do is a restart and its back to normal again. I rarely use GPS but it does take a bit to get a fix.

I hear ya. I got the Maxx for its solid radio, so I really can't deal with the finicky issues in custom roms. However, they are so much smoother and more customizable, which are big draws. (assuming if someone is on art mode in 4.4.4 since no xposed is available)

Agreed, my signal wasn't necessarily bad on exodus, but I noticed similar data hand off issues, especially in lower service areas. Which is all day at work for me.
