Ive been having this issue since i bought my tablet, the thing is that in tablets the status bar is made together with the ui buttons and ive been wondering if its possible to separate them like in phones (one on top and one in the bottom of the screen) because my problem is that when i get something it displays it in the bar using all the space and i have to wait until the notification dismisses otherwise if i touch the bar it launches the app or whatever the bar is showing instead of opening the bar and it is really annoying.

There has to be a way to hide the status bar. obviously in numerous diff launchers, there is the option to swipe up or down to hide/bring back your noti bar. the noti bar lies within the systemUI.apk (or so i can tell via switching themes). anyone know how to edit the xml that allows for hiding the noti bar? it looks sick when i adb push the systemui.apk and it dissappears. Help!
the statusbar has the home, back, menu keys built in; its probably a bad idea to hide it
I was thinking about this also. It would be nice for apps to go true fullscreen and overlap the status bar. Maybe its an app issue but Remote RDP Lite makes it awkard as when I set the resolution to 1280x800 the bottom part actually gets covered by the status bar.
I suppose I can set it to be like 1280x750 or something...

I'd like the option to hide it whenever.

this would likely require use of a hardware button, since I dont think android CAN support gestures that work over all apps, and I cant think of any other input method you could use
edit: wouldnt be a bad use of the power button since the battery is good enough without it needing to sleep and the lockscreen is sort of pointless because its not in your pocket. Maybe a popup menu on the power button like on phones?
I'd like the ability to move the status bar to the top. This would make it easier to access when I'm holding it with my left hand and resting it on my legs. Right now, if I move my left hand to hit back or home, I then need to grab my xoom with my right hand to keep it steady.
One option would be to use the up down volume keys to move the status bar up or down. Volume could be handled more easily from the notification tray, it isn't as necessary as on a phone to have an alway accessible volume button.
After watching a demo of the new BlackBerry 10 today, it occured to me that Android doesn't need the navigation bar taking up screen real estate. The back button can be replaced by swipe from left edge into center (similar to pulling down the notification bar on top). Swiping from bottom up brings up the menus. And swiping from right to left can either go home or with a second up or down flick go to recent apps (or switch these two).
Once this is implemented, manufacturers can get rid of the bottom capacitive buttons, increasing screen size while keeping phone physical size constant. Android can finally get rid of the navigation bar that wastes so much space.
Make it happen I'll test but I like my soft keys

Well, that's a thought. Personally, I'd just put the softkeys into the statusbar and get rid of the navigation bar altogether.

Apparently the Ubuntu smartphone OS has all these edge swipe gestures in the plans:

Just updated to 20140130 on my Nexus 4 and played around with the new navigation bar settings. I decided not to change anything and reset the navigation bar.
Now the navigation buttons (back, home, recent) show up on the lockscreen (slider ring) and they work! I can't see what I'm doing, but as soon as I unlock I can see that I went back, to the home screen or pulled up the recent list. This seems like a major issue to me as it essentially renders parts of the lockscreen useless.
Also, the navigation bar isn't transparent anymore on the home screen, but some kind of grey gradient (not even the standard solid black).
Thanks for all the good work up to this point!

For a prototype I'm am developing I need to show the navigation bar but the phone I'm using (a chinese one) has physical button. The phone is not rooted neither I can root it. Is there a solution to show navigation bar even if the phone has physical buttons? I've tried different launcher but I wasn't lucky.
Thanks.
Hi,
Since the update to one ui 2.0, i have a permanent black bar where the navigation buttons usually go,(i used gestures btw).
Its like the black bar you get under the keyboard which i have turned off, but still just get an empty black bar at the bottom of my screen now.
I've drawn round it in red to show what I'm on about in the attached picture.
Is anyone else having this issue and how i do i remove it.
Thanks in advance
Sometimes the bar will change colour to what's on the screen, but before the update it wasn't there at all.
Hi, I only got that when I used the kwgt app to theme my phone. I still want to know why but anyway once uninstalled my phones back to normal.
