[Q] Noob question, i think... - HTC One S

WCDMA only
GSM Only
GSM/WCDMA auto
what are the differences? i live in an apartment and usually i am in a 2G situation w/T-mobile and the option selected is GSM/WCDMA auto, but whenever i switch it to GSM only, 4G appears, then i switch it back and i am on 2G, i know this may sound very very very noob but i need help understanding that, can anyone help me?

Ha..use the the one that works best. Google search will explain the differences

I could be wrong but I thought GSM was 2G and the other is 4G. The auto option will select the best available. 2G uses less battery but it's obviously slower.

Thanks, I was wondering the same thing

I was wondering the same thing and settled on auto but found out it was probably my radio version. There are many threads on that in the developers forum, I believe. I flashed a different one and am running a bit faster now. I used about every ROM around before I settled on Viper as my favorite but MUIU had the best battery life without messing with too much IMO. You can get CID checker as a free app in the google play store and scroll through to find your radio version and hboot... trust me you may need them at some point so it's best to get them now.

Well i mean yeah your right, it's just that whenever i set it to GSM i get 4G automatically but if i select WCDMA i get 2G and 4G whichever is stronger i think.. or is it my imagination... =/

[Q] Connectivity problems due to WCDMA vs. GSM

I just got an HTC Sensation and am having terrible connectivity issues. I've narrowed it down to this:
When I leave my network on GSM only, I have decent reception but can only use EDGE and lose my MMS sending and receiving capabilites (which I use often).
When I switch to WCDMA only, I have no reception whatsoever.
When I switch to WCDMA/GSM auto, I have really bad connectivity (constant dropped calls) but I'm able to send and receive MMS.
My sim is a brand new 4g sim from T-Mobile.
Anybody have any idea how to fix this? I checked the forum but didn't come across anything.

I assume you are on the stock ROM and are unrooted? Are you using GB or ICS update?
I also had this problem on GB stock ROM, and partially fixed it by using cell tower predefined lists, rather than using the auto option which made the phone constantly search for the tower with the highest reception, something which my Sensation failed to do properly.
Try this method to begin with, it might help. It solved the issue to some extent for a lot of users.
Access the phone dialer and dial the code *#*#4636#*#* – don’t press the ‘call’ button. After acouple of seconds the test menu will appear. From this test menu, select ‘phone information’ and scroll down to the first dropdown menu.
Select GSM auto (PRL) rather than the likely setting, which will be WCDMA/ GSM Auto. Restart your phone by powering off and back on again. Check the test menu again to ensure the GSM auto (PRL) option has been retained. If not, set it again as above.
That said, installing a custom ROM improved my reception stability ten fold. I strongly advise it.

I'm pretty new to this stuff and don't really know what GB or ICS is. But I'm sure I'm on the stock rom and unrooted since I haven't changed anything on the phone since I got it.
I tried your suggested method but unfortunately it didn't make a difference. It also disabled my MMS capabilities again :-\

Find in settings updates. There should be an option to manually check for updates, select that. If it comes up with an update, make sure you have wifi and enough battery.

Checked for updates and it says my device is up to date.
Before this phone I had an HTC HD2 and ran AmeriCan Android on it but I can't say I was a big fan of the idea of having to run another system after starting my phone. It was a big reason for why I decided to get the sensation in the first place.
Hmm.. I guess you will just have to wait for the ICS update, which is the latest operating system at the moment. (Kind of like Windows XP vs Vista)
Other than that I have no idea why you have not received the update; out of interest which country are you in? And which carrier are you on? Is your phone SIM free or carrier branded (contract as well)?
You will just have to wait the update out. However, you are welcome to root your phone like me (Google it), and I can possibly show you in the right direction if you send me a PM.

[Q] Radio Flashing for Noobs?

So I've been having the same battery problems as everyone else. I'd like to disable LTE on my ATT 727. Knowing that I could force protocols on prior phones, I went looking for the options to find none. So I decided to flash CM10. I learned after flashing CM10 on my device that the radio needs to be flashed also. I've tried flashing a few different radios but it appears that they simply aren't flashing. Recovery goes through the motions but the version never changes. I've read rumors that I need to do a subsidy unlock but I haven't seen any real confirmation of it. Is that true? A carrier subsidy unlock must be done to flash over the RAT locked ATT radio? I would expect that to be in the noob listts with radios if so.
Baseband version: I727RUXLF3
Kernel: 3.0.49-cyanogenmod-g5756af3
Recovery: CWMR Touch v5.5.0.4 _sk8_
Thanks in advance for the advice. I really want to like this device. Hopefully between wakelock and LTE we can get it useable.
castle
There is a dialer code you can use to access radio settings and turn off lte. I don't remember what it is offhand.
This: *#*#4636#*#*
^^Type into dialer^^
Also, try updating to a newer version of sk8's cwm.

I'll try a newer CWM and report back.
The menu you gave works the same as the menu available in the ROM I'm using. The options are available but when selected the lte option is force selected. Its good information nonetheless.
Thanks!

Thanks for the info. I wasn't able to find the text you referenced to read it in detail. It looks like you're telling me that CM10 has a bug where the network mode can't be set for AT&T Skyrockets.
Do other roms have the same problem?
Thanks!

This is the same for pretty much all recent at&t smartphones. Last 5 I have had have had that option blocked. There is a possibility if you pull the sim card out, boot phone back on, use the dial code listed previously to set it and then put sim back in you might get the desired results. Not sure they will stick though.

Perhaps I've misunderstood but I thought I had read that flashing the Roger's radio would fix the problem as it's RAT unlocked (whatever that means).
I can pop the sim out and see what happens.
Setting preferred network mode is what I was talking about
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
you could also go to your APN's and switch to the non LTE one
this will stop you from having mobile data altogether in some areas but will give you the desired battery effect
otherwise ive never seen the preferred network option work on a rom

Don't know about Rogers that is why I said at&t. I haven't even been able to get the rat selection screen to give any other option but lte ones on this device. On my lg thrill I was able to get different options by popping the sim out like I suggested but of course that is a non lte phone.
As a side note, I haven't seen much difference in battery life between running lte data or wifi data. I could see this as beneficial if in a non lte area or weak signal area.

Which I have flashed. Does you know what the requirements are to disable LTE, to take advantage of the rat unlocked radio? I don't believe I'm in a good signal area and would like to at least try changing protocols. If I can't get this phone to a 12 hour life, it's going back.
Thanks!

You have to select search manually in the networks menu. Let the phone search and select at&t when it finishes. You can than change network settings. I do it all the time on aokp with a Rogers radio.

[Q] Disable 4G (LTE) and General Radio Help

Sorry if this has been posted somewhere else but I did a bunch of searching and couldn't find anything that explained what I'm looking for. Just got the Skyrocket and I'm trying to disable the LTE. 4G is awesome but I'd like to conserve my battery as much as possible and I don't need the super awesome speeds when the phone is just sitting my pocket while I'm at work. I've looked at a few different ROMs, both ICS and JB, and with the stock radio (UCLI3) I can't tick the check box for 'Use 2G Networks Only'. It checks then unchecks and then grays out. I tried a few different radios too, UCLL3, UCLK4, UXLF3, and a radio for Bell for the I757 that I suddenly can't find the info for. All of them work and give me 4G just none of them work with my ROMs to let me use just EDGE.
So far the ROMs I've tried is the new Dirty Unicorn JB ROM, AOKP ICS, and CM9.1 which I believe is also ICS. What am I missing? The last phone I used I didn't have to mess with any radios so this is all new to me. In short, what radio do I need to make this work with the ROMs I've already tried or can I get a recommendation on a ROM/Radio setup that accomplishes this? I'd prefer a ROM that is AOSP since I'm not really a fan of TouchWiz (It just doesn't feel right for some reason).
Did you try going in settings to mobile network click on mobile network mode and change the setting to gsm only? That should give you up to hspa and hspa+ for data speeds. As for using just EDGE I can't help you with that...sorry.

I believe the UXLF3 Radio is RAT Unlocked and that's the one I'm using now with Cyanogenmod 9.1 and I managed to get it to use 2G only. Not sure why it wasn't working with AOKP which is also ICS. I'm not sure if there are any RAT Unlocked radios for Jellybean yet but now that I've got it working I'm afraid to try any other ROMs lol
All this radio stuff is still making cross eyed though. I feel like someone needs to do a really good write up explaining it because it's not easy to wrap your head around if you've never had to mess with it.

ROMS & Radios?

AT&T customer, midwest United States here. I live in a fringe area, but have always been able to get reception.... until I rooted and started running custom ROMS. It seems some ROMS, for whatever reason, get better radio reception than others.
I tried Viper, and while it was the best for reception, there were a lot of things that gave me trouble and I couldnt live with.
The CM ROMS wont even think about getting reception for me, unless the mobile data is turned on, and then are very erratic. I leave the data turned off when at home due to it always looking and searching and killing my battery. Well, that, and I always use wifi at home. I even tried the newer 3.18 AT&T radio, but it didnt help
Any suggestions as to a ROM that is known for reception? Or a specific AT&T Radio that is better for reception? While I knew different ROMS had different good/bad points... I didnt know the reception was on of those things.
Thanks

There sure is a big difference for some reason, with me anyway. The only 2 radios I have found in the Radio thread for AT&T without the RIL (senseless ROMS) is the 2.20 and 3.18 radios. I have bounced back and forth between them, and not seen any difference to speak of. The 3.18 seems to be the more erratic of the 2, for me anyway

My advice would be to try a different radio until you get one that works for you. I work out of state so I have to change settings to wcdma only to make them work in the area. I use the 3.18 radios on both CM and Sense because they work best in my home area. Viper is based on 3.17.661.2 so AT&T 2.20 may be the best option to try.
I use 2.41 seems 80% of the others I've tried plain suck in my area

When flashing radios for CM, also be sure that you are flashing the ones designated strictly for CM as the radio fw is kept in another partition than sense. I've never had an issue finding a radio that works for me. They don't all work well but at least 1 always does. When looking for the best radio, I download them all, test them one at a time, marking the signal strength and speedtest results for each and then flash back to the radio that gave me the best results.

Im getting the radios out of the radio thread here on XDA. I am d/l the radios in the lower section, for CM. I didnt try a different radio when using Viper, because it was useless seeing as I had so many other issues. I wasnt aware I could use Vodaphone or Telstra radios, on AT&T. I had only tried the 2 AT&T radios. My bad, I will try the others.thanks for the info guys. The speed tests are a moot point for me. As I said, i am in a fringe area. I cant judge anything based on data speed, and leave data turned off most of the time. Im not worried about data speed, or trying to fix anything in that area. Im trying to get my phone to get good enough reception to make/receive calls dependably and send/receive texts dependably. Sorry if there was some confusion over this.
Honestly, I would have stuck with Viper, but my wifi wouldnt work, and I couldnt even get my contacts and calendar imported from my Google account. In fact, there wasnt even a Sync option for contacts. So that was a no go.
Thanks again

Try 2.40 radio, I get the best reception down here in Texas with it, especially when I go to the lease.

Ok, I tried just about every radio in my CM ROM, to no avail. Then, on a whim, I ticked "2G Networks Only", and now I have decent phone signal/reception. This sucks though.... to have my data connection have such an affect on my voice signal. I had always left my data turned off when at home, due to being in a fringe area, and it always bouncing around and killing my battery. That, and I always use wifi at home. Now, I have to leave my data turned on, and in 2G mode... just to be able to make a call. Rather silly to me.
Thanks to everyone who offered to help... MUCH appreciated
P.S. when it was said and done, I think I wound up back on the stock radio for Cory's CM ROM (2.20?)

What does your signal do if you have 2g clicked and then turn on wifi

signal remains the same... around -87/13, but the Edge "E" icon, disappears from the screen. So, no real difference that I can tell.
It just amazes me that my data connection/type/settings can ruin my voice reception. Hopefully, its going to work decently now.
Good luck with it

thank you! so far, so good! As long as I leave the phone in 2G only, my signal is great. Well, great for my area anyway lol.
With VoLTE being so far out yet, and AT&T not having true 4G, and voice/data being on 2 different frequencies.... how in the world is this happening on this phone? How can enabling/disabling data/4G/2G have such an affect on the voice/text signal? I just cant wrap my mind around this

I'm no expert by any means but if I were to take a guess, I would say it may be due to limitations of towers that are closer to you? IE: closer towers provide 2G signal but have not been updated to support 4G? and the towers that support 4G are further from you?
Like I said, I'm no expert, I'm merely taking an educated guess based on what I do know about the technology.

Actually, I dont know either, but that does make sense. If the phone is in 4G mode, then ti will try to connect to a 4G tower, which could be further away. But, there were times I had a great signal with 4G enabled, but it was in H, or H+.... and wouldnt make a call.
Im just happy I found how to get a decent... steady signal. I love the HOX, and I love the CM ROM... but I was ready to pull my hair out with this lol.
Thanks for the input, I may ask someone at the local store next time Im in. There is one kid in there, that is pretty knowledgeable. I think the rest of them know less than I do lol
Well, I spoke too soon. Now I have good reception, but the quality of my connection SUCKS! I have flashed and tried every radio for CM, and while I have a good signal now (around -85/13) my call quality is terrible and are all fuzzy and fade in and out.
I dunno, Im thinking seriously about going back to stock. I love the idea of having control over my own phone, but Im not in this as a hobby. I just want things to work right. Every ROM I have tried has had one issue or another.... wifi connection issues, wifi going to sleep when it shoudlnt, bluetooth connection problems, a dozen apps starting by themselves, radio/reception issues. Its to the point its just not worth it to me. I dont like having to work on anything every day, and if I do, I feel something needs to change in the situation, if that is the case. Dont get me wrong, Im not slamming any developers, or their projects.
When I was younger, I was always the first to get one of the Celeron CPU's and OC the snot out of it. As I got older, I thought... why? Ill just spend and extra $20 and buy the faster CPU so it is more stable, and not have to mess with anything. Thats sort of how I feel now

LTE usage on non-LTE areas

I'm thinking about buying the s2 skyrocket, and as I already know, LTE drains the battery very fast.
The problem is that I dont have LTE in my country and I was wondering whether or not the LTE will still drain the battery even when there
is no LTE reception, by constantly searching for LTE network?
Thanx in advance!
No, just switch to H+

AT&T LTE phones don't have the option to switch to 3g or turn off LTE, so that simply won't work.

I'm guessing the phone is unlocked... If you can't get it to change manually by going into network selection and searching for networks manually, install a non at&t modem. (Rogers, Bell) than try again. If you are on stock touchwiz than you're SOL.

It should let you as long as you aren't on touchwiz. Just go to the network selector, choose your network from the list, and then set it to GSM/WCDMA preferred. Or check use 2G networks only if that's what floats your boat. I'm on AT&T using AOKP and it just worked for me.
EDIT: Almost forgot, you have to redo it every time you reboot your phone.

If I'm in a non Lte area it switches automatically. It should for anybody

It has nothing to do with TouchWiz. It's the modem. Use a non AT&T modem and you will be able to switch to H+ on a TouchWiz rom.

So many scenarios on battery life.
Signal strength, Apps, Wakelocks, brightness the list goes on.
You will have to play with it and give and take for your liking.
The best I've gotten was 3 days some odd hours.
Its a great phone you will not be disappointed.
We have an awesome community willing to help with any and all problems.
With that said you need to do your homework first and READ READ READ.

So I'll just ask it differently then - Does the battery last a whole day (from morning to night) on non-LTE areas (auto brightness always on)
when only doing light-moderate use (just phone calls, texting, light apps like calculator, camera, playing a little music/videos, no gaming, no wifi, no internet)
Thanks!

LTE radio will not turn on if network apn doesn't provide it ..
So if network doesn't provide LTE , phone will connect to H+ if available ... No extra battery drain (from LTE) in this scenario.. I had a similar situation when I was on Starighttalk , they don't provide LTE , my location is an LTE market if I was using an at&t sim
Although it's a great phone , but it is getting old nowadays .. You might think of the international S3 maybe or an S4 .. Just my 2 cents..
PS :Custom roms aren't magic by selecting network preferred setting , you can do it in touchwiz with *#*#4636#*#* in dialer , but you have to use a RAT unlocked modem like the Roger's ones...
Does anybody get bad call quality, Because I read on some reviews that the call quality on the skyrocket is not the best...

No you can't on stock UCMC1 rom (the one I use),even with rat unlocked radio...That's why this dialer code got the attention because it's the only way to do it(in UCMC1)

Really? I remember people saying you could do that on the AT&T JB rom with RUXUMA7 radio.

It doesn't...I even double checked that...UCMC1 stock doesn't provide "Network mode selection" even with Rogers radio...It has to be done with the dialer code...
