Is htcdev unlocking one s safe? - HTC One S

I have the S4 T-Mobile One S and was wondering if the htcdev bootloader unlock tool is safe, since I've seen a bunch of soft brick threads, also is that all I need to do to get a Rom on the phone? I don't have any expierience with flashing or modding on HTC phones, only on Motorola phones. Any other flashing information is appreciated. Thanks

Yes it is safe.

Torxx wrote a step by step post in the development section. It's stickied. I used it to unlock and flash my phone. Works great.

But, i would scan several threads on unlocking read his to get a good feel on the process. Highlighting the correct text to copy/paste for the token is important--I missed it first time and included to much text--

Unlocking the bootloader

Im seriously considering unlocking the bootloader. What are the pros and cons of doing this? Any replies are greatly appreciated..

You can flash ROMs, radios, and kernels with an unlocked bootloader. Without it you cant.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
What are some advantages to that as opposed to waiting for an ota?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
All custom ROMs offer various mods, tweaks, and overall improvements to the Android experience versus stock ROMs. Generally the OTAs leak long before they're pushed out, and and devs always update their ROMs accordingly so you never have to worry about accepting an OTA. Check out the development section and read through some of the ROM threads and you'll see what I mean about the tweaks and mods. If you find a ROM you'd like to have on your phone, only way to do it is by unlocking the bootloader. It's a lot easier and safer than you might think.

Im rooted on 1.85 stock rom. Does the one click unlock method still work?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Yes sir it does.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Will that automatically put a custom recovery on the phone or would I have to get one from somewhere.. Sorry for all the questions..
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
No, you will have to flash the recovery yourself. There are a few threads in development for recoveries, and there are even a couple one click methods. Just look for them, should be on the first couple of pages.

The only cons are a very small chance of bricking your phone and rendering it unusable (follow instructions and you should be fine). Also, as of now, once you unlock the bootloader you will not be able to take the phone back for warranty or other reasons. In the future there may be ways to undo this process, but none that I know of right now.

It is very difficult to brick a phone and 99 times out of 100 it's recoverable. If you follow directions and only flash stuff that is made for your phone, then you will not brick it. As far as warranty claims are concerned, if it's a hardware issue they will still more likely than not take care of it. I've exchanged a few HOXs, all for hardware issues, and not once did they check the bootloader to see if it was unlocked at one point.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
If your thorough in following directions, there's a thread I posted in development on unlocking your boot loader without voiding HTC warranty. Also if u do unlock, just go to the market and download goo manager beta. It will flash the recovery for you. Very nice tool to have.

Is it possible to root in the new update?

I had this phone since it came out, and rooted and S-Off and I had tons of issues. Such as Wifi disconnecting and needing to restart the phone in order for it to work, also sometimes Wifi slowed down to a super crawl. Random reboots, etc. But this probably could of been credited to me dropping it all the time and messing up the internals.
I returned it and got a new one, updated to the latest and haven't rooted. Battery life is amazing, but too much bloatware!!!! Can I root and s-off the latest tmobile software? Cause I tried running the older RUU and that failed to install on my phone.

Um... S-off? The One S?
But yeah unlocking and rooting should be no problem, just use htcs unlock method...

You are saying that HTC them selves provided a rooting guide? If so can you provide a link for HTC Unlock method.
Thanks in advance

No HTC does not provide a rooting guide. They simply make it easy for you to unlock the bootloader using http://www.htcdev.com/
Once the bootloader is unlock you can root via a few method. There's plenty of sticky thread in the dev section.
This is just one thread

I recommend you install TWRP recovery so that you will find it simpler to flash roms. No need to fastboot flash boot.img.

Please read this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24806342#post24806342 especially the first part of that post, where a reasonable user kindly seems to suggest that a fellow user read very easy to find info instead of starting a thread. You must have posted that in anticipation of this thread?

Quick question

Just coming from the amaze good riddance. Was wondering if the rooting process was somewhat similar, as in unlock bootloader through htc Unlocker then run the all in 1 tool flash recovery and then to flash superuser. I'll check around a bit and I'm just not find an answer I need so that's why I'm asking. Thanks in advance

We're trying to help you, in the XDA way. And what we're trying to explain to you is that if you need someone to hold your hand while rooting and romming your phone, you're not ready to root and rom. Because if you goof something up and get in trouble, you're going to have no clue how to get out of it.
It's not that I want some to hold my hand.. I've installed roms on my skyrocket but I never new HTC one x would be so different n harder.. What I'm trying to say is I'm not used to fast boot and twrp and cmd promt

I remember when I rooted a phone for the first time. It was my HTC desire. I distinctly remember being worried the whole time I was about to turn my lovely phone into a paperweight.
I read some stuff.
I read some other stuff.
I was confused, so I searched and read some other stuff.
Then I rooted my bloody phone myself, and thoroughly enjoyed a certain sense of accomplishment when it worked.
I'm now on my one xl. There was some confusion about the att and the "international" one x. Me being aussie, I thought I was international. Then I read a bit more, and learnt the difference between the chips on the two models, thereby avoiding bricking my 3 day old toy.
I now ask a few questions here and there, primarily about bugs or features of whatever ROM I am running. Rooting and unlocking and installing roms has been addressed more thoroughly then I believe anything else on this forum.
There is a lot of information out there, and heaps of help to be had on this site, but please do some of the research for yourself first, because I don't think you would have submitted this post if you had.

let me quote myself.....under misc. guides. Did you even bother looking ? Has all the guides you need...
Never mind this is why we need an ignore user button added to the xda app

one click

anybody know the link to the onexrootoneclick? i cant find it anywherre
What are you trying to do? Everything you need is here on XDA. That one-click tool is really outdated, unless you have the firmware that shipped with the phone when it was released it's completely useless.
PS. Please don't make duplicate posts.

Trying to unlock bootloader. I'm on the second step on the hasoons Evita kit. I am doing the restore right now ..does it normally take a long time for that to complete?

I've never used any AIO kits, I've always gone the manual method. What are your bootloader details? And is it an at&t phone?

Ok seeing as we seem to be taking in two threads I'm just going to reply in here. You're not irritating me, I'm just trying to find out your details. So you do have an at&t phone. I think you're best bet is to just use the 3.18 unlock method. Click the everything Evita thread in my signature, then find the link to the 3.18 method.

On the htcdev site. Unlocking bootloader
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda app-developers app
You can't use that because they block at&t phones. You need to click the Everything Evita link in my signature, then navigate to the root section, and click on the 3.18 root method. That's the only one that'll work for you.

Nope. Didn't work. I clicked your name tag and got confused with the method u described. I think I will find someone to team view with me. I'm such a noob.. haha
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda app-developers app
So you're saying you couldn't follow the instructions in this thread? I'm gonna be blatantly honest now, and I'm not trying to be rude, but that method is really simple. If you can't follow those instructions then maybe you shouldn't be modifying your phone in the first place. I'm only saying this because it's incredibly important to have a good knowledge of what you're doing when it comes to modifying your device. Without that knowledge, it's only a matter of time before a brick occurs.
If you don't want to be a noob, there's only one way out of it, and that's learning.
Sent from my Evita
I followed the instructions. I don't know what else to say. My desktop has been acting funny. I think it has to do with the kids downloading stuff to it. Lots of times the pc isn't responsive. I downloaded all the sdk, advanced drivers and everything. I'm not a noob to computers dude. I just not familiar with hacking. That link u told me click on brings me to another persons page. The link is to dl the xpwn file. The link is dead or maybe my zip wasn't extracted properly. Nvm, I don't want your help..thx anyways. Peace out!
