Rogers HTC Dream - froyo update

Question to those who have updating their Dream from Rogers, was it at all slow or where their noticeable improvements?
I have one at my disposal but running stock OS (1.5/1.6 i assume). Anyone have a nice and easy to follow tutorial to update this phone without hassles? Also does updating android OS require rooting the device?

Follow instructions. This seems to me to be the easiest guide. Be careful of the Rogers/T-Mobile thing. Seems there are different radio's and such. I don't know anything about Rogers. As far as Roms, I use HTCclay's Superfly TCBY. Lot of memory left on phone. Just try a few to see which you like. Good Luck.
By the way, you do have to be rooted. The guide will walk you through it.

I would say to try the ROM in my sig (the stock ROM)
works for g1 and 32B Magic

he is going to need the EBI1 kernel to go with the rom.

Ok I am reviving this thread because I want to make sure I am following the right steps in doing so. Don't want to mess this up.
Successfully rooted the phone following video I found in the second post of this thread. Can't link you to it because I am still a new member =S! I checked the radio version of the phone and it is 3.22.20.17. Which ROM is recommended?As I said, I just want to get rid of this terrible stock rom from rogers and put froyo (which in turn also allows me to get touch screen keyboard activated) on here.

With that radio you will need to flash ebi1 kernels after you flash the roms.
I completely forgot that Rogers blocked the virtual keyboard with their firmware. That's such bull****.

Now you have more information in the link in your sig. Question: Can you re up the RS link you have there? Also, rooting the phone just means that you have the app called Superuser?
Now I get quite lost the moment you start explaining the options HTC Dream users have. Is there a recommended ROM to download for this phone considering its specs?

Yes it is sad that rogers has done this. Do whatever they can to screw the consumers over. Just found out it is 1.5.

Ok still lost on trying to do this and want to follow the set up from cyanogen but its really complicated. I don't want to make a backup of contacts and stuff because it wasn't originally my phone.
Do I still need the amon_ra's recovery?

Think of what you need to do:
1) Obtain root access so that you can flash a new recovery
2) Replace recovery so that you can flash new SPL
3) Flash new SPL so that you can be more compatible with roms / kernels
4) Flash a new rom (IE/ Cyanogenmod 6), and a compatible EBI1 kernel (for instance, Brian Crook's ones on the Cyanogenmod website)
Without getting into huge detail, you do it in this order to prevent your device from being unable to boot / recover.

Along with that, you use the appropriate supported +14MB EBI0 kernel.

Now I am following the Cyanogen wiki link (can't post there) and it says to launch flash rec but I can't understand from where I have to do this. Anyone care to help? And how does the Andriod SDK help?

Andriod sdk has the adb component needed to initiate commands to your device from your computer. then you need the android windows usb drivers.after installing sdk to see if you have connection with your device, open console on your computer start>run>type cmd and hit enter at the prompt type adb you should get several lines back kind of an options menu. at next prompt type adb devices. if your device is recognized you will get back:
device XXXXXXXX (this will be an actual number).
if you dont get any devices back with your phone attached to usb then you probably need the driver. just google it.
as for flashrec I dont believe I used this. I used exploid to gain root and install 1.33.2005 spl

Where do I get the android driver for windows (7 64bit specifically)? Adb command aint working in my cmd.
So what do I do about flashrec? Man updating this thing is driving me nuts. So many unexpected curves.

I also have Windows 7 64bit and I didn't need a driver it just works for me. Please tell us exactly what you are typing in and what output you are getting. You could also try the instruction to install the usb driver here:

What is your build number in settings? If it is 1.89.631.1 you are following the wrong guide. (see the top of that guide)

When I type in ADB command it just states that the command is not recognized (even when SDK is open).
Build number 1.85.631.5.
Now when I turn on phone it accepts it after I plug it into computer. I can mount sd card to copy files without issue.
Do I need another tutorial (preferably video since its easier for me but text is just fine)?

This doesn't mean that it can't find your phone, it means that it can't find the adb.exe.

That is a pre-911 build. Don't see too many of those any more. Rogers harassed everyone into updating.

Does the zip file for the android SDK make a difference if I can't install it through the .exe? It keeps saying that it doesnt detect the Java SDK when I try to install.

Yes, you can use the .zip. Extract it, run setup.exe, install Platform-tools, cd to the platform-tools directory then you can use adb. Fastboot is in the tools directory. That was just changed in the 2.3 sdk update so I don't know if the guide has been updated yet.

The only .exe file in the zip is the SDK Manager which isnt exactly an install.

And since his Thread was Flawless, with his permission I'm mostly copy/pasting word for word. as I am copying most of this from elijablake . . . so thanks this thread needs some editing, and I will be working on that in the future . . . . specifically the CWM / ROM manager which will not work. Disclaimers
CSOUTH IS RELEASEING 2.2 UPDATE THIS WEEK (6/26). You may just want to wait for that to be released. This thread will be updated when the release occurs as how to flash recovery that you can flash roms with etc.
Keep in mind there are many variations to each step, this is what worked for me the easiest. READ ALOT BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH ANYTHING!!
There is always the disclaimer that attempting any of this can and will make your phone dysfunctional and or possibly bricked beyond repair (but most likely just dysfunctional which is a pain in the arse to deal with) if you do not follow steps completely (and of a trustworthy source such as xda - ehm and in the appropriate forum ).
Steps to get to 2.2 (EB11) on your phone:
**Please note that the links were removed by CSouth for copyright (COPY WRONG *****ES) reasons. So if you can find the files somewhere (ahem . . . ) then you can follow these steps. THIS GUIDE IS PURELY FOR EDUCATIONAL VALUE, I DO NOT ADVOCATE BREAKING COPYRIGHT LAW.
I highly recommend using Heimdall rather than Odin. Don't ask me why . . . maybe because it has a command line utility and it is cross platform. So my instructions will be for using Heimdall.
After you have the downloaded files (from wherever you might have gotten them, you bad bad person) unzip and look for the following files:
-factoryfs.rfs
-modem.bin
-recovery.bin
-zImage
1) Put your phone in download mode by powering down your device, removing the battery, connecting the USB to your computer, and holding the volume down button. It shouldn't take long. You should see a little Android with a shovel.
2) In Heimdall, if using the GUI, put all of the files in their obviously appropriate spots. Don't worry if not everything is filled, just use the files that you have. (You should be using the repartition with the .pit file, the zImage with the Kernel, the recovery, and the modem)
If using the command line utility, cd to the directory where you unzipped the files and

heimdall flash --repartition --pit atlas_v2.2.1.pit --factoryfs factoryfs.rfs --kernel zImage --modem modem.bin --recovery recovery.bin
Wait for the process to finish, your phone will reboot at the end.
3. That is all, now your phone is updated to 2.2.1. Put the battery back in and boot your new shiny toy!
DO NOT DISCONNECT USB DURING THIS PROCESS AS IT COULD BE POTENTIALLY DISASTROUS!!! DON'T EVEN TOUCH IT AS I HAVE FOUND THE USB CONNECTION TO BE A BIT FLAKY!
Also, it is ok if it takes your phone what seems like forever to boot. This happens whenever you install a new kernel, just be patient.
If you have gotten the most updated batch of files, you should have the proper recovery to begin flashing. If not, well seek help . . . You should have RED RECOVERY!

To access recovery, you can use the three finger method. (Hold down the volume up and down keys and the power button all at the same time when you're turning your phone on) Once you see the Samsung splash screen you can remove your finger from the power button, but keep holding down both volume keys.
You should then go here to check out themes and mods.
Steps For Rooting either 2.1 or 2.2.1
Basically all this means is gaining the ability to give programs/apps and yourself SuperUser access (equivalent of being admin in windows) and also the ability to flash roms via recovery, detailed below.
**NOTE: most custom roms come rooted, so if you are installing a custom rom in 2.2.1, you most likely don't have to go through these steps. Just flash to the ROM you want . . . ***
The easiest way to root is through the z4root.apk. (an application that will run right on your phone)
Download Here
After download, put z4root.apk on your SD card root directory
Then make sure in Settings->Applications that the "Unknown sources" box is checked.
If you don't have a file manager, download a free one from the market, using the file manager navigate to the z4root.apk and select to install it. Note: If you need help at this step, no offense I would suggest getting someone with more experience to help you continue on. I'm serious here
Reboot your phone
After it boots, open the z4root app and press root. At this point it is going to hang, give it 2 minutes and pull the battery. Count to 10, put it back in and turn it on. - This is normal
After your phone boots open z4root again and click root, this time it will run no problems and phone will reboot.
NOTE**IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH z4root: "give Super One Click a try. It's a package you have to download to your computer, but you get to see more of what's actually going on so you know where it's at in the process. I have only used up to version 1.5.5, and I know that version is very capable for the Showcase. It is located here."-This Information provided by phidelt82**
Once you are rooted (you will see the superuser icon in your apps, it will show apps you've given that permission to... eventually) you will need to make sure you have a file manager that can request root permissions (read/write) before you will be able to complete the next step. Search the market for "root file manager" and pick one to download and install.

It's a few bucks, but there's hardly a day that goes by when I don't use it.. (Well worth the money)

It seem everyone forgot about the Samsung Showcase Galaxy S Generic CDMA.
I managed to Root it flash CWMR and flash TSM TW 4.0 ROM. but then try to go back to stock and lost 3G. So I returned it and get a new one. No more mods for me I'm done no one cares about Generic CDMA.

Can someone provide directions to install a custom rom for a Showcase running stock 2.3.4? I don't have root. I'd really appreciate any help!

[TUTORIAL]LG Optimus one P500 with stock 2.3.3. ROM

After so many nights without sleep, i found solution for rooting new LG P500 official rom update.
DO THIS ON YOUR OWN RISK, I WILL HAVE NO LIABILITY IF YOU BRICK YOUR PHONE !!!
Read instructions carefully
First of all, download archive from here and extract it to your desktop
And download driver pack from here
1. Back up all data with ASTRO file manager, you can find it on market.
2. Hard reset your phone either with system->privacy->erase all data or turning your phone off, and holding HOME,VOLUME DOWN and POWER BUTTON.
3. After phone boots up, you have clean file system, then go to Applications, and turn on USB Debugging mode
NOW THE FUNNY PART
1. Connect your phone with usb cables, make sure you have installed all the drivers needed, and connect phone in DEBUGGING Mode (provided a bit upper on this post)
2. In the extracted folder called root on your desktop, go to ADB folder and start cmd7.exe if u run win7 or cmdXP.exe (run as administrator in both options) if ur pc runs win XP. (your address bar should like something like this: C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR NAME HERE\Desktop\root\ADB
3. After starting cmd7 or cmdXP, type following commands

then

adb shell
(symbol will change to $ or #) and copy paste following command into your terminal

echo 1 > /data/local/lge_adb.conf
4. After doing this, REBOOT YOUR PHONE
5. After reboot, go to root folder on desktop again, and start SuperOneClick.exe
6. Select GingerBreak method and press root button
7. After few seconds VOILA !!! You have rooted Optimus One.
8. REBOOT PHONE and update superuser app from market (mine was updated automatically)
To unroot device, follow steps from 1 to 6 in FUNNY PART and select unroot instead gingerbreak. and you will have unrooted device
I tried to root all kinds with android SDK and many others, and always had problems with force close. Running on this method for 3 days, and have no errors.
This is my tutorial, if u consider it helpfull, think about donating for cofee or beer.

EDIT : If you want to have beautiful CRT OFF Animation on your phone read tut here be sure to backup phonebook mine was deleted, but now i have crt off animation, which i looooove and think that is the second best thing to do after rooting

i tried the above method and was successful but the problem is that superuser app crashes when some other apps require root access..and more over setcpu is not working, only clocks stock mhz...

Try EXACTLY as written, because if you don't do like it is mentioned above, root will be wrong, and u will have app.crash on superuser. If Everything is done by my tut, your superuser app will be updated and phone rooted.

Hi, today i rooted my Optimus One with 2.3.3 but i have one problem - Android Market don't work (Server error, try again later (...) - something like this).
How can i fix it ?
I think that i solved it.
I replaced SuperUser.apk with new one, downloaded from hxxp://androidsu.com/superuser/ and now everything seems to work correctly

Getting SU error everytime I try to do anything on Titanium Backup, even after I updated SU. Any thoughts?
EDIT: Seems that, besides updating the SU app, I also needed to update the binary through SU itself. It seems to be working fine now. Thnx!

ok, if you are newbie, rooting is not necessary, but if you already have rooted phone it is ok. Go to market on your mobile and download "Android booster" easy tool to keep your phone in performance state. you can see about it here, and it is free

Lets start with some basic terminology & general understanding:
What is Root / Rooting?
Put simply, Rooting your device allows you, and/or rooted apps, to access parts of the Linux based Android software that is your OS, and that you would otherwise not be able to access. These tasks can be as simple and beneficial as backing up your system setting, or as complicated as installing custom ROMs, Kernels, etc. (more on this later).
What are Fastboot files or (FXZ) ?
Fastboot files (FXZ),contains a firmware image that can be installed on your device. i.e. they are more of less what you are installing on your device when you do a OTA (over the air) update; except an actual Fastboot file (FXZ) that you download and flash on your own will most of the time not only contain the updated info. in the OTA, but also all the other “stock” info. that came with the device. That’s why when you flash a Fastboot file (FXZ) it will return you to a stock/retail device.
What is ADB?
ADB = Android Debug Bridge. So what this basically is, is a command/terminal based interface you can run from your PC, to interact with your device and its file structure. You can PUSH (install) programs, apps, .apk files, etc. to your device, move things around, set permissions, etc. One of the primary things to remember when trying to use adb, is that you need to enable debugging on your device. In fact it’s a good idea to enable this, and leave it that way… forever! This setting can be found on your device under Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB debugging

What is a ROM?
A rom is like a custom firmware image that is made by a Developer either entirely from scratch, or based off of the official firmware package. Some ROMs contain simple changes like changing icons and adding extra options to things, other more complicated ROMs can change the entire Android experience. Which one you will want to flash, will be entirely up to you. Read carefully, and make sure you understand what you are getting into before you flash.
What is a Kernel?
As a rule of thumb, if you have to ask, you probably shouldn’t be messing with this anyway. But hey, best for you to at least know what it is. A kernel is the heart of the device's OS. In simplest terms it’s a connection between your apps and your device’s hardware; i.e. the processor, RAM, etc. A custom kernel can dramatically change the way your device’s hardware performs… for the better and/or the worse.
**Right now we currently have a LOCKED BOOTLOADER so we can not change Kernal's at this time, IF the Bootloader gets unlocked this WILL change !!
What is a Bootloader?
The bootloader is a program code that is executed before the device OS starts up, and that instructs that device to boot “normally”. The bootloader can come locked or unlocked from the manufacture. A unlocked bootloader will allow you to install custom ROMs & Kernels (as well as some other neat things) on your device.

What is CWM Recovery (ClockWorkMod Recovery)?
CWM is a custom recovery program that allows you to backup / restore a full or partial system backup of your device. It also allows you to install flashable .zip files; which is one of the primary installation methods for custom ROMs. It also provides other neat features such as cache wiping, battery reset, and other processes. Long story short, if you are thinking about flashing custom ROMs or just want a really good backup program, incase you FUBAR your device, you need to install this.

CM7 stands for CyanogenMod. It's a very popular ROM, b/c of its built-in options, great enchantments and total removal of manufacture software; i.e. all that MotoBlur stuff on your device is gone. It is a stripped down fast and well designed ROM with a custom kernel, that allows for easy flashing of great custom themes (just check out the General Theme Section for Android on XDA). Only a small selection of Android devices have a "official" release of CM7, however almost all Android devices have a "un-official" port for it.

FXZ Hints, Tricks & Guidelines:
- Always make sure to flash with a full battery! The last thing you want to do is run out of juice in the middle of a FXZ flash; that's a great way to brick your device.
- As a general rule of thumb before flashing a FXZ file to your device, you should always download the FXZ file to a file path on your computer with the least possible spaces (i.e. the shorter the file path to the FXZ file the better). So just download it to the root drive of your computer, such as C:\.
- If you are running Windows on your PC, open RSD Lite as a Administrator. Also, when you open RSD Lite, Instead of browsing for the FXZ file via the normal “…” button in the program, just drag the sbf file onto the file path bar in RSD Lite. Sometimes, the FXZ file will not load when you select it via the browser button in RSD Lite (again I have no idea why).
- Once your FXZ file begins to flash to your device, be patient… the device will re-boot at least a couple times in the flash process. Do not get jumpy and disconnect your device until RSD Lite says you are 100% done! Doing so can cause your device to BRICK! If for some reason you have waited for an inordinate amount of time, and it does not say finished, then ask for help on the thread, before unplugging. The same goes for pulling the battery. DO NOT DO THAT!!! Pulling your battery during a sbf flash, is one sure fire way to brick your device. Only pull the battery as a last resort and only after you have asked for help.
STEPS:
1) Have the correct Motorola drivers installed for your PC (i.e. x32-bit or x64-bit).

4) Make sure you alternatively boot into AP Fastboot mode by powering down (or pulling battery), then press and hold the volume up and down button while powering on.
5) Plug your phone into a back USB port on your computer.
Front USB ports are often unreliable when it comes to power levels. They should not be used for flashing.
6)Run “RSD Lite” on your computer
7)Press the “. . .” button next to the box labeled “Filename”
8)Browse and open the FXZ file or just just drag the FXZ file onto the file path bar in RSD Lite
9)Wait for the program to read the file, then choose “START”
10) Now, the device will slowly flash the FXZ file. BE PATIENT AS THIS MAY TAKE A WHILE!
11) Congratulations! You’ve restored your ATRIX 2!!
How to flash the FXZ once applying the OTA update and get back to 2.3.5, ONCE YOU UPDATE TO THE OTS 2.3.6 YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO FLASH THE 2.3.5 FXZ WITHOUT FOLLOWING THESE STEPS BELOW!!
NOTE: Download this file HERE -
Unzip it and move all the the items in it to the stock fxz. You might get a warning about replacing files, just click OK. NOTE that Windows might not be able to handle the size of the fxz. I have 6 GB RAM but Windows still wasn't able to perform a drag-and-drop through the fxz's zip. I recommend that you just unzip the fxz and then put the files in. (You don't have to rezip it either, RSD Lite will still recognize it and will flash faster).
You should be able to use RSD Lite to flash the file.

1) download the mount_ext3.sh file, .... get it HERE
2) open a command line in the directory you saved the file

An fxz file is the same as an sbf, and you would use RSD Lite to restore your phone with.
With and without a bootloader unlock CMW will still be the best ways for recovery. The fxz file and rsd is still the only way out of a soft brick and we don't have that just yet.

i tried to flash my atrix 2 with rsd lite, it all goes well until it gets to the "preinstall.img" it just says failed, and stops.
the phone will still boot up but nothing is there except a stock background.
no pull down screen, icons, nothing.
what can i do to get back going?

k i got it to install all the way through, but i still get the same screen.

after doing it several times i tried to install my SIM card and everything came to life.

Lets start with some basic terminology & general understanding:
What is Root / Rooting?
Put simply, Rooting your device allows you, and/or rooted apps, to access parts of the Linux based Android software that is your OS, and that you would otherwise not be able to access. These tasks can be as simple and beneficial as backing up your system setting, or as complicated as installing custom ROMs, Kernels, etc. (more on this later).
What are Fastboot files or (FXZ) ?
Fastboot files (FXZ),contains a firmware image that can be installed on your device. i.e. they are more of less what you are installing on your device when you do a OTA (over the air) update; except an actual Fastboot file (FXZ) that you download and flash on your own will most of the time not only contain the updated info. in the OTA, but also all the other “stock” info. that came with the device. That’s why when you flash a Fastboot file (FXZ) it will return you to a stock/retail device.
What is ADB?
ADB = Android Debug Bridge. So what this basically is, is a command/terminal based interface you can run from your PC, to interact with your device and its file structure. You can PUSH (install) programs, apps, .apk files, etc. to your device, move things around, set permissions, etc. One of the primary things to remember when trying to use adb, is that you need to enable debugging on your device. In fact it’s a good idea to enable this, and leave it that way… forever! This setting can be found on your device under Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB debugging

What is a ROM?
A rom is like a custom firmware image that is made by a Developer either entirely from scratch, or based off of the official firmware package. Some ROMs contain simple changes like changing icons and adding extra options to things, other more complicated ROMs can change the entire Android experience. Which one you will want to flash, will be entirely up to you. Read carefully, and make sure you understand what you are getting into before you flash.
What is a Kernel?
As a rule of thumb, if you have to ask, you probably shouldn’t be messing with this anyway. But hey, best for you to at least know what it is. A kernel is the heart of the device's OS. In simplest terms it’s a connection between your apps and your device’s hardware; i.e. the processor, RAM, etc. A custom kernel can dramatically change the way your device’s hardware performs… for the better and/or the worse.
**Right now we currently have a LOCKED BOOTLOADER so we can not change Kernal's at this time, IF the Bootloader gets unlocked this WILL change !!
What is a Bootloader?
The bootloader is a program code that is executed before the device OS starts up, and that instructs that device to boot “normally”. The bootloader can come locked or unlocked from the manufacture. A unlocked bootloader will allow you to install custom ROMs & Kernels (as well as some other neat things) on your device.

What is CWM Recovery (ClockWorkMod Recovery)?
CWM is a custom recovery program that allows you to backup / restore a full or partial system backup of your device. HDC Galaxy S3 G9300 - ROOT

Has anyone got a root method that works for the HDC Galaxy S3 G9300?
Have tried Bin4ry v18 and another script but they didn't work.
The phone has JB 4.1.1. The Kernel is 3.4.0 dated Dec 3 2012. The build number is; e1920_v77_zlh_9p017_asx_20121203

Me too. I've spent probably 6 hours today messing around with the 1.8 version script, on both windows 7 and Linux. It always fails the same place, with mount permission denied ... are you root?
I have other issues with the G9300 that I'd like to tackle, like WiFi range, but digging in requires root access. Here's hoping somebody smarter than I can find a way to root this thing.

The tutorial isn't clear about how to run Android Kitchen. In the Android Kitchen folder is a script called 'menu' that has to be executed by cygwin. Launch cygwin first with the .bat file in its install folder. Then, navigate to the 'menu' script. Hint: '/cygdrive/c/<path to Android Kitchen>/menu'
Nowhere does the tutorial say to copy 'Root_Superuser_3.1.3_Busybox_1.20.2-Update1-signed.zip' onto your sd. You will want to do that before beginning the final recovery step.

I have just run through it on my phone and all has gone well until I got to where mobileuncle tools flashes the recovery.img. It needs Superuser access to do that and I don't have it. I am thinking it must be something to do with the Menu script you mentioned. How to you run that script? What is the command for it?

From what you've written I will make a few assumptions. It sounds like you successfully did the rebuild with Android Kitchen, where it created a new recovery.img. And then you used SP Flash Tool to successfully transfer the new image to your phone.
You don't need mobileuncle. It's a great utility to have, but you don't need if for this process. Install it later when this is all done.
If the above assumptions are correct, you already have downloaded the modded recovery to your phone and you're 95% done. It sounds like all you need to do is put the zip install for su, superuser, and busybox onto your sd card, boot into recovery (upvolume+power), navigate to 'install zip from sd card', install the su-superuser-busybox zip, and reboot.
If that doesn't work, I suggest working your way back up the chain – re-downlod the new recovery.img; if that fails, rebuild the new recovery.img; etc.

Finally, you rooted the phone. Do you think you could upload the rom somewhere? Others can just download it and flash without going through the entire process. Good Job!!

Hi - Yes you are right, I have created the recovery.img and transferred it to the phone.
Thanks for the tip that I don't need to use mobileuncle.. So I have booted up into CWM and have the su-superuser-busybox zip on my sd card. Trouble is CWM doesn't recognise the sd card and says E: unknown volume. That is strange because android sees it fine when the phone starts.
I am still wondering if my problem is from the the android kitchen part. I wasn't able to run android kitchen. I think I better run through the process again. How did you bring up the 'menu' in kitchen? I ran cygwin first and then navigated to kitchens path and used /menu and also ./menu but just got an error message. Even dumped all of kitchens files into cygwins root directory in case I had messed up the navigation path but still got the same error message whenever I tried to run menu. How did you get it to run please?

I have uploaded the recovery.img that I created here. Remember, because it works on my phone is no guarantee that it won't break yours. You use it solely at your own risk. Also, you will still need to use CWM to install the su+superuser+busybox zip from your sd.

Next problem - no 3G
Having the phone rooted, I've gone on to the next problem that has no ready solution.
That is, no 3G. I use the AT&T network in the USA. AT&T uses WCDMA on 850MHz and 1900MHz for their 3G service. The HDC G9300+ doesn't support WCDMA at 1900MHz, which is the band that AT&T uses most. Where I am (Phoenix AZ) there is only 1900MHz service, which means that I can't get any 3G. Only 2G "Edge".
The problem *might* be remedied through software - or maybe not. If the MTK6577 radio doesn't support 1900MHz in some hardware sense, then the game is over. But I doubt that for two reasons. First, from a marketing standpoint, the AT&T network is too big to just ignore when designing a generic platform like the MTK6577. Second, from a hardware standpoint, the transceiver frequencies are synthesized from one base oscillator through a set of on-chip frequency multipliers and dividers. If the MTK6577 can generate frequencies in the 2100MHz band it can almost surely generate frequencies in the 1900MHz band. What's required is a software driver that properly sets the multipliers and dividers.
My bet is that somewhere out there in the world there is a software driver for the phone's radio that can set the chip to work in the 1900MHz band.
Can somebody find that driver so that we can bundle it into a ROM for this phone? Or a tool to adjust the driver that's bundled with the phone?

Thanks for uploaded your recovery file. I thought I would try that before going through the process of redoing mine. This time it kicked straight into CWM without any sdcard errors, so was able to install the zip file. It is now nicely rooted and has been running for several hours, and as yet I have found no problems.

First time I purchased from them, found them very good and had no problems. Took about 15 days to get it. Considering there were xmas & new year holidays at the time it was pretty good.

How to root your HDC Galaxy S3 G9300+
For those wanting to root their HDC Galaxy S3 G9300+ phones follow these steps;
Download wseverin's 'recovery.img' from post #10.
Download my 'MT6577_Android_scatter_emmc.txt', 'su+superuser+busybox.zip', 'SP_Flash_Tool_v3.1224.01.rar' and 'MT657x_USB_Win7_Driver.zip' files that I have attached to this post.
Install the USB drivers to your computer if you don't already have them.
Copy the su+superuser+busybox.zip file to your phones SD Card.
Run Flash Tool (Flash_tool.exe) in administrator mode.
Load my scatter file.
Next, backup your original recovery file (This is very important in case something gets messed up) Do this using the 'Read-Back' function. Select Hex and enter 0x1588000 for Start Address and 0x600000 for Length. Before clicking the Read Back button, shutdown your phone and remove the battery and USB cable. Next click Read Back, plug in the USB cable and replace the battery (But do not switch the phone on) The software will backup the file and come up with an OK window if successful.
Next flash your phone with wseverin's recovery.img. Do this from the Download tab in Flash Tool and tick the Recovery option. Before pushing the Download button you will also need to shutdown the phone, remove the battery and USB cable as above.
Next start the phone holding the volume-up + power buttons. This will boot the phone into CWM. Choose 'Install zip from sdcard', then 'choose zip from sdcard', navigate to the su+superuser+busybox.zip file and select yes to install it.
That's it! So easy!!
If you followed the steps correctly, after you reboot the phone it should have root access.. However, be warned that your phone could be bricked if something goes wrong or your phone is a different model, so do this at your own risk and backup your original first!
PS: thanks to wseverin for the modded recovery file and being the 1st to root this phone.

Do I detect a hint of cynicism?
It seems to be a decently built phone. The display is good; actually better resolution than many competing models. Fit and finish are as good as you'll get anywhere. The capacitive touch screen is just fine. GPS, WiFi, and Bluetooth all work well except that the WiFi range is a bit anemic. Software is pretty much standard Android Jelly Bean. I consider it worth what I paid for it, especially since I am not about to spend 3X that for a cell phone. Oh, and it actually makes and receives phone calls!

I have a Star G9300+ smartphone with the same JB 4.1.1, same kernel (3.4.0 dated Dec 3 2012), same build number (e1920_v77_zlh_9p017_asx_20121203) than yours, but 1Gb RAM memory.
Could I use the same method to root my smartphone? How much RAM have yours?

Yes mine is also 1Gb RAM. I have read that HDC and Star are the same, however I don't know this for sure. This is where I purchased my phone;

If yours looks the same you could always try it I suppose, but make sure you backup your phones entire ROM first. That way you can reinstate the original in case it doesn't work.
