How to print SMS msgs from a smarrtphone?

Or backup SMS llke plain text first , and then print them via the PC.
I like to know how and what program to use?

Couldn't get it working. Found SMSimport which import and export messages as .xml
But I like to have it exported as .txt

...in that case, if you've got €8 to spare, take a look at SMSExporter from Stefan Seiz - get it here - it can export as .TXT or .CSV so it should do everything you want

I know it's an old topic, if you like it simple SMSImport is just the ticket.
MS Excel does a very good job at importing XML files, and arranging your data how you like & print them out.. best of all IT'S FREE!! Thanks goes to the Author

Back in 2008, there are very few apps that support printing SMS from Android cellphones.
Nowadays, there are quite a number of freeware printing apps on GooglePlay. Just search "android printer app".

This topic started in 2008, bump in 2010 and again this year......

[Q] What Android database apps exist?

I currently use a WinMo phone but might move over to Android. I have several large databases (1200+ records) so I use Handbase. I was wondering what database apps exist for Android. From what I'm told the iPhone version of Handbase is rubbish, is the Android version any good?
I've had a quick google search and didn't find anything and it looks like I can only search Android market via an Android phone which I don't own yet.
What I need from a database is to be able to import my existing databases (probably as a .cvs file) then easily filter the records. The simplest and best database program I've ever used was on my Psion 5, handbase (winMo) is a close second. Other than Handbase are there any other decent database apps out there and is Android Handbase any good?

Just to be clear, are you looking for an app that can read your current database files? Or just any database application (do you have any requirements E.G. GUI, Sql console, RDBMS transactionality?) For example, are you looking for "A database" in the same way that MS Access is "a database" (Hint: it isn't it's just a GUI) or "a database" in the way MySQL is.
Android has binaries for SQLite built in and searching for sqlite in appbrain should give you a number of front-ends for that.

[Q] WP7: is it productive ?

it is interesting to follow the hype of WP7. i am not a fan of 'early adopter' idea. I am looking for a replacement of my good old HTC touch diamond and still searching some infos regarding WP7 from forums which received several negative feedbacks. I would like to hear from the WP7 power user how i could do the following equivalent tasks in the winmo 6.1 since i use it productively at work and rely heavily on them:
1. Excel Mobile: edit excel file either on the go or on pc to analyse the result graphically and sometimes show it to the client. a sync using mobsync would be done before switching the edit from mobile to pc or vice versa
2. Automatic Call Recorder (ACR): automatically record 2-way call conversation without pressing any button. Useful for recording phone number without taking notes (you could just replay the record many times) or recording directions given by the boss
3. GPS navigation app with offline map and rerouting function: I often lose GSM signal while driving to the clients in remote areas. rerouting is useful if i need to drive to new client which area is unfamiliar and easily to get the wrong turn :-(
4. Sync all outlook + backup SMS data: i am using Activesync for the outlook & PPCPimBackup for the sms. i can get the whole data back from the past to the the latest after the ROM is upgraded e.g. i have 3000+ text messages
5. No data in the cloud - company policy: company data is not allowed to be stored in the cloud whatever the reason. i know it is ridiculous because data could be easily taken if the mobile phone is stolen
6. File explorer: to organise all types of files in the internal storage

nope, wp7 will not fit your needs at all. I would look for a used hd2 if you want newer hardware.

This is potentially illegal.

Would have to buy an app for this. Google/Bing Navigation isn't offline. I don't think TeleNav is, either. Personally, I would recommend a dedicated GPS system if this is what you need. Nokia phones come with Offline Map capabilities, and there are some apps (may get released soon) which offer it. But it's not a stock function and don't expect Microsoft to offer such a thing in Bing. These things take up a ton of storage space on you device, as well.

No ( <- forgot that important 2 letter word unintentionally) Sync via USB to outlook. ActiveSync/DeltaSync keeps everything in Sync, anyways. Dunno why anyone keeps that many texts, but Microsoft will roll out Devices.Live.com for WP7 which will allow you to do almost all of what MyPhone offered for Windows Mobile - that includes backing up text messages.

Company data does not get stored in the cloud. It's sync'd via the Exchange server the same way Windows Mobile, iOS, Android, and Blackberries Sync it. Windows Phone 7 supports Exchange Remote Wipe.
Your camera roll gets automatically Sync'd to SkyDrive, but why would you take uber sekret company photos on a smartphone, anyways...

Don't count on it. The OS organizes things for you into Libraries. This really isn't needed that much. I dunno why people keep asking for it when Microsoft made it pretty clear that it isn't coming. WP7 isn't the only smartphone OS that doesn't have a File Manager in it.

You haven't really give anyone a clue as to what you do on you device, so it's hard to tell if it'll be productive to you. All you've done was put a tacky title on yet another "this is what I want for WP7. Is it there, is it coming, why isn't it there, etc." thread.
That may sound a bit harsh. Not intentionally. But that's basically what it is.
Windows Phone 7 is way more productive than Windows Mobile, generally speaking. Anything except maybe Blackberry OS and Symbian^3 is more productive than Windows Mobile.

my opinion: i get the feeling that without a good network coverage & signal the newer OSes (android/wp7/iphone) will reduce its ability to perform even a simple task. we are getting dependent a lot on the cloud

Sorry. Not trying to flame, just a lot of hate threads hear lately. Honestly for what you want to do, an hd2 is probably your best. Mature OS with high end device specs. Extended battery is available if you can stand the hump it will add, or carrying a spare battery is what I did with my tp2.

I am poweruser of WM considering it's features as top.
And than I bought WP which I use for 3 weeks.
First, it's not true WP7 will not work without data transfer.
Mine works exactly like it should with data off. I mean it requires transfer for the things which need it anyway like email, browser etc.
I don't buy music from the marketplace...
Yes there are some apps which are connection based like translators ect. and I would love to see it offline too.
Now productivity - it's a question of what you really need.
In fact WP7 with Office and OneNote built in is very productive.
I love the platform for it's power and execution.
However I do miss things from WM. Android is unnacceptable UI wise....
So I am staying with WP7 if Microsoft will add more features to it.
If not - it will be tough call.
Now feeling how WP7 works I don't want to step back and everything else FEELS like a step backwards. And I hope I will not be forced to do it.
But my WM6.5 device is still with me ready to come back.

Well said. I still have my HTC FUZE, in fact the SIM card I used in my new Samsung Focus was the one I used in the FUZE. I can insert it back into the FUZE anytime I want to. But, even though I used WM for years, and tweaked it, customized it, loaded 4 new Radio ROMs and 5 custom ROMs, I am staying with the WP7 phone. For me, it is smoother, faster, and everything is well integrated. I am looking forward to updates and new features, but for now, it is an awesome experience. I now realize that I had loaded up my WM 6.5.5 phone with a lot of crap I never used and don't miss now. OK, I understand that people want the "right" to load their phone up with "Crap" they'll never use, and some "Crap" they will use, and for those, they'll have to wait on WP7 or remain with WM or some other OS, and that's fine. Personally, I would have loved WM still being upgraded on the latest hardware, I would have stayed with that, I think. But having moved to WP7, I won't go back.

its good to see wm users experiences and questions about a possible up/down grade to wp.
very useful stuff.

Touching on N8ter's point on libraries and file managers... If you think about it, those libraries ARE file managers, and are actually more effective than a file manager would be. The only thing, which will be fixed with W8 and Mango working together, is better SkyDrive integration so you have a much easier way of syncing your files. I mean, I honestly have never used my phone as a flash drive, and the only reason I ever used a file manager in the past was for .cab files... Which we don't need any more.
But, I can't wait for SkyDrive to work as it needs to coming up, I think THAT is my most important feature coming considering I'm a student and would make my life significantly easier. I do see an ability to hook up the phone to a PC in the future and Word automatically recognize your Word files on a WinPhone device though... Not as a mass storage, as an additional "library" for files... If you understand what I mean here.

Libraries aren't a file manager. It isn't a replacement, either. There's no control over a library. It's an automatic classification of media on the device based on the media type. You can't take a private file and put it somewhere on the device where it will not show up in a Library, and that's an issue for some people. If you have any private documents/images/videos on your phone, it's hard to let anyone who thinks the phone looks interesting play with it because all of those files are right there in plain sight in the Hubs, so you have to tell them to go to a Carrier store if they wanna play with one. That's not an issue on i.e. an Android phone because you can hide the file in a nested folder and set it so that the folder's files are not displayed in the Gallery.
Also, the lack of a file manager is keeping things like BT File transfer and File Transfer in IM applications out at the moment, and it make sit ridiculously hard to put files on the device and keep them organized.
One of the best features of Android Office applications is their integrated file manager and Cloud Integration.
SkyDrive will be nice, but without a decent file manager Office will still be worthless to me because there's no way I'm putting all my files on SkyDrive. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but I have 5 computers here and do not need Microsoft to hold my files. I like my stuff to be organized, and I don't want everything on the internet... Bluetooth transfer isn't implemented because Microsoft hasn't yet, not because of any other reason. You could go to any file, or picture, and select Share, and the option could be there, regardless of library. I mean, by that theory, there shouldn't be any method of sharing then. You do it in text messaging at the moment, and in Who's Near Me, it's just the apps haven't implemented them.
If things on your phone are that important, there is a password option. I personally don't let anybody touch my phone. I think my texts are far more 'secret' than any document I can put on my phone, to be honest, but that's just me. I would though like folders in Office to sort out my documents, this may come with the new integration though. I would also like to option to protect the documents as I do on my computer.
As far as putting files on the device, I'm for the whole "only supported files" allowed deal. But, look back at my post, I would like to see something along the lines of: Plug my phone into the computer, open word, and it's there as an extension. Same with other Microsoft applications. Pictures and Music are already done through Zune.
I think I'm also on a different end of the spectrum than you are. Personally I keep all my files on my home network. I also access it remotely. So, full SkyDrive integration would be amazing in my eyes. I'm already at risk connecting to the internet, pretty sure Microsoft can do a better job than me at protecting my files. I already use SkyDrive on my phone through the mobile site too, it's just a hassle in dropping them into the folder I created on my computer, and then downloading them on my phone. This being done automatically would be amazing.
But as far as using it as a storage device for files the phone has no need for, I don't like that idea personally. You have to remember the types of users that are being marketed here. I think something along what I suggested would be best. Security just needs to be upped a little. Let me password protect certain files and I'm fine.
And no, I don't automatically put them on SkyDrive... I think mainly out of habit. But 99% of my pictures go on Facebook the second I snap them. And I use Photobucket quite often... If my Live friends were large in number I'm pretty sure my SkyDrive would be full of public photos.

From all my research on WP7 and HTC HD7, yes it seems very strenuous to do the things we used could do on other 'smartphones' ... Ever since apple came out with the 'app' world... things are being followed(android, Ms).. But what i think is, that with Win 8 on the Horizon, the app world is here to stay, and it shouldn't be a surprise when it will come to, what you can run on your PC, u can also run it on ur mobile... I don't know if such interface has happened with Apple and the Macs and the pods n phones to do that... Google is doing more with chrome to do that with their android... so, will they still have to sit upon other os's to accomplish this or as I think I've heard they are making their own Os... Future stats shows, Apple is on a downhill trend and Android to follow... In reading in MSN today, Android phones are being introduced with viruses, such as the one that will sit on your phone and send all your data to some phone numbers in china... So Android glory days maybe not so great... As the veterans have stood longer then the newbies...

[Q] Share/Send recorded sound

i used an existing sound recorder and implmed, one by myselft.
There are some samples form MS, how to do sound recording too.
Now i want to send the recorded sound to another user's android phone.
Should be simple
- Send as email attachment
- Send via bluetooth
I did not find a program on the marketplace and trying to implent this by myself i found no example, how to do this. In this forum and on other resources, i read, that it currenty is not possible, to send email attachments programatically.
Is there really no way, to do such a simple task, as sending/sharing an audio file (after converting the recorded byte-array to .wav format) to another phone via email or bluetooth ?!

Forget about bluetooth (until MS releases some kind of BT API). As for email attachment, you have a two options:
- implement smtp/exchange client by yourself;
- use (create) http "proxy" service on the external server (you sending audio data and additional parameters, and service forms the message with attachment).
Both ways a really not easy and expensive.

The problem is: An email attachment in fact IS hard (impossible), without using some external service.

This is quiete the same, what i found out too. It is possible (i am a developer and i can host such a sevice on my domain) but that's not the way i like to do it.
I play in a band and recorded some demo with the phone and now want to send this recording to my band colleagues but it was not possible to do this.
This should be as simple as "open a bluetooth connection" + send.
On a windows phone, store it in the "media collection", on other phones, store it on a selectable location on the file system.
This is really anoying.
I like the platform and like developing for it but not beeing able to do such simple things...it's hard to argue, why WP is better than f.e. android.

What do you want to write - a program, that does does recording audio + email it to other users?
I am searching for a solution, how to develop this by myself, not for a program on the marketplace.

Oh...and I had already started programming it. Oh well. Basically do this:
Upload to SkyDrive using the API or...
Create a WCF Service that allows you to send a file stream
Have the files stream get written to the server as a GUID
Return link to file
Send link via e-mail
Have file expire after 24/hrs or something

The "problem" with this approach (and email too) is:
- i need an internet connection to upload
- the people that want to download the file, need an internet connection
- there are still people, that don't have an internet flatrate for their phone or any internet connection (or have to use roming, if not at home) and jus say "..hey, you recorded it - send it to me via bluetooth".
Seem's, the steps you discribed, are the only option, to do it. The phone i used 5 year ago, could send pictures and audio recording via bluetooth and since the mango update is currently released and doest not contain an api for bluetooth access, i think it will not be released soon, if ever.
In another posting i read: "I take a picture with me and my friends and i can't send them over the bluetooth. They have cheap dumbphones and I have Omnia 7 and I'm embarrassed. Bluetooth filetransfer is essencial feature."

The steps you explained are possible for sure, but in my opinion a bit "much work", for simply sending some data != text.

HannesB, I agree with you, it's kinda annoying. But, probably, MS will open some new APIs in future (WP7 is based on WinCE so it's not such a big deal, code/drivers are already exists for that platform). Don't forget - WP7 platform is still too new.

It will let you store to the Public folder of your DropBox account.
As previously mentioned, unfortunately there is no way to attach WAV files to an email currently.

RemoteTracker for Android -Antitheft software

Hi there,
This software is an Antitheft and you can use it to track your device when it was lost or stolen. It works catching a formated SMS/EMail sent from any phone/computer and then receiving useful informations back.
You can use it to others objectives, like keep your eye in your child. Use your imagination!
You can set up to four emergengy contacts to receive SMS if the thief change your SIM card and you still can track your device.
The RemoteTracker for Android is an evolution from an old project for Windows Mobile 6 (If you want to see the entire history, please click here).
I'm justing starting this project. There are much more to come.
To send a command to RemoteTracker, send a SMS with the syntax: RT#(command)#(phone or e-mail)#(password). Example: RT#EGP#[email protected]#1234. This version answer the commands below:
help - send to you a list of commands available in Android platform;
ehelp - same as 'HELP', but send the list by e-mail;
fhelp - same as 'HELP', but send the list to your FTP server;
gp - try to get GPS coordinates and send back to cel number passed as parameter;
egp - same as 'GP', but send the list by e-mail;
fgp - same as 'GP', but send a file to your FTP server;
gi - Send informations about your phone: IMSI, IMEI and ICCID;
egi - Same as 'GI' but the answer goes by e-mail;
fgi - Same as 'GI' but the answer goes to your FTP server;
cb - your phone will make a Call Back to you. Just make a call and let the microphone open;
cellid - Retrieve informations (CELLID, LAC, MNC and MCC codes) about the tower your phone are connected. Send to you by SMS;
ecellid - same as 'CELLID', but the answer goes by e-mail;
fcellid - same as 'CELLID', but the answer goes to your FTP server;
secret - if you forget your password you can use this command to receive by SMS your personal secret question;
lostpass - used to receive your password if you forgot it. You must send the answer for your secret question, so, you can use the secret command to help you;
Commands available only in PRO version:
PICSON - Makes RemoteTracker (only PRO version) watch for new photos and send them to Default EMail Address;
PICSOFF - Makes RemoteTracker (only PRO version) stop to watch for new photos;
EPICSON - Same as PICSON, but send an E-Mail back;
EPICSOFF - Same as PICSOFF, but send an E-Mail back;
FPICSON - Same as PICSON, but send the answer to FTP server;
FPICSOFF - Same as PICSOFF, but send the answer to FTP server;
PCALLSON - Makes RemoteTracker (only PRO version) takes a photo on a call is receive or made and send it to Default EMail Address;
PCALLSOFF - Makes RemoteTracker (only PRO version) stop to take photos on calls;
EPCALLSON - Same as PCALLSON, but send an E-Mail back;
EPCALLSOFF - Same as PCALLSOFF, but send an E-Mail back;
FPCALLSON - Same as PCALLSON, but send the answer to FTP server;
FPCALLSOFF - Same as PCALLSOFF, but send the answer to FTP server;
WIPEDATA - This command will return your device to factory default and format your SD Card.
There are another features inside RemoteTracker, like:
- SIM CARD change observer;
- Automatically restore your preferences if you reinstall it. This feature is particular useful if you have a custom ROM with RemoteTracker inside. Once configured, everytime your devices boots up, your preferences will be restored;
- Works as Device Admin, so it can't be uninstalled if you don't know the password;
- And more...
This project can be multi-language. In this version there is only English (sorry about it, my english is very bad because this is not my mother language). If you want to make your own translate, I can tell how. Very simple.
If you decide to try RemoteTracker, I would like to read reviews, comments and suggestions. Remember this is a beta version and may contain bugs. Use at your own risk and with caution.

I just released the second beta!!!
Now, RemoteTracker can automatically turn on the Mobile and WiFi network to try get location and send EMails!
For older phones RemoteTracker also will automatically turn on the GPS! Unfortunately this is impossible if you are using new Android versions (2.3.x or so).
A few minor bugs was fixed.

GPS can be enabled in 2.3+ - but only if device is rooted. That's what it says in the Cerberus entry in "AppStore" [edit: AndroidMarket].

Yes, if you have a rooted device is very easy to enable GPS remotely. But I do not recommend in any way for users to root the phones for security reasons.
I think you are talking about Market, not AppStore We are talking about Android not Apple

I just released version 0.3. Now we got FTP answers back!
In Configurations I added a session to input your FTP server details. The example commands GI and GP now works with FGI and FGP as well.

Wow, nice to see this make it to Android.
Some suggestions,
1: Name it something that isn't obvious in the market. Don't want a thief easily finding it in the installed apps list. Going to the market and then buying "my apps" shows you exactly what's installed. So you should name it something totally different that nobody would suspect or want to remove. Like "memory maximizer" or something like that. Probably want to keep it in the middle of the alphabet so it's not at the top or bottom of the list.
2: Maybe make a way to remotely monitor the front/rear camera. Then you could get the thief on video (and also see if it's a crowd, or some huge guy you don't want to mess with, lol).
I'll try to help test when I get another phone and more time. Right now I don't have a lot of time to work out bugs. And more importantly I only have the 1 phone, and I can't afford to have it malfunctioning (I need it for work). I'll buy a used extra phone for testing and then I'll help test.

About cameras, yes, I think we can control them. At least take pictures and send to an e-mail account. To remotely monitor the cameras, may be I need a server to receive/transmit stream. Of course this is in my todo list

I would rather set up my own server (or even directly stream peer to peer from the device). That way you don't get stuck with hosting fees and the app doesn't die if you decide to stop supporting it someday (not that you would).

There are many possibilities. I'll try all of them.

I edited the first post to add new features. And I have a notice...
I created a free and pro versions. The free version will have the most common commands we had in Windows Mobile. Only specific commands for Windows Mobile I can't write for Android. Pro version will have new features to come (I don't know yet).
But I don't want to charge my friends, so, if you are a beta tester or help me with anything, I'll give the PRO version for free. But it's for future now I'm engaged to finish RemoteTracker free as best as I can do.

Possible Bugs

Thank you for have been developing so useful application. I believe everyone here is excited about what you are doing.
I tried your better version and here what I have to say:
1) You stated that the command format is RT#EGP#[email protected]#1234, but what if I want to use command to upload that info to FTP? Then,theoretically, I don't need to indicate my email or phone in the command. At the same time commands like "RT#FGP#1234{this is a password}", "RT#FGP##1234{this is a password}" are not recognized as valid RT commands or even failed with fatal exception. How can I upload this info to FTP, what should be the format of the command in this case?Indicating an email inside the command or phone number when sending to FTP seems a kind of redundancy.
2) Once an Fatal error appeared, it started appearing for each further VALID command which were working before. Error states the following:
Fatal error: Call to a member function query() on non-object in /celerra/webstor/root.dev/usr/sms core.php on line 234, most likely there it has some null reference there.
3) In the log file I see that its trying to send messages to invalid address substituting "@" at "?". Does it mean it sends to correct address but it writes to the logs incorrectly or is it really a bug? Because I don't receive any emails at all.For example, when sending RT#EGI#[email protected]#De41Be02AF in the logs I see that it mentioned it sent the message to "test?test.ru" instead of "[email protected]"
This is it for now. I can try to help you out with programming. I have no experience in Android development but have been developing in C# for 7+ years.

You should use: rt#fgp##1234 The double # are still necessary. I'm working on a simpler syntax to be used in final version.
I'm worried about fatal errors. That's why I released beta versions. Please use Configurations Menu and check the Debug Options. After that you will see in the root of your memory card a file named remotetracker.txt. Send that file to me please.

I really don't know what is this. Please send the log file to me. I wrote RemoteTracker for Android in Java, not PHP!!!

Are you sending the command using another phone, the same phone or using some WEB service (like your carrier website)? There is no code to change '@' to '?'.

I almost finished writing the commands that existed in RemoteTracker for Windows Mobile (at least the ones Android can execute).
But I'm still trying to make the security of RemoteTracker to be more robust. I had Features in Windows I can't write for Android yet:
- Prompt for password when uninstalling;
- Lock / Unlock the unit with the LOCK / UNLOCK commands;
I'm not able to use the camera without the need to provide a preview to the user. According to the source code of Android that is impossible, but I saw some programs doing that, so there is a way to do that and I'm looking for this information.
If anyone knows how please help me

I am using Web service of my sim provider to send SMS. Didn't have a chance to try with sending SMS from the phone.

Hide Remote Tracker Application

Are you planing to make a feature to hide the Remote Tracker from the drawer and from any place of the phone. Like with the Theft Aware; you can access the application by dialing from the Phone Dialer. You enter your four code number then hit call. This will open the apllication without calling the number.

G'day mate.
Long time no see. Great work on this app so far.
I've finally gotten around to installing it and play around with it a little.
I'm testing this on HTC One X with Revolution HD ROM
Here are a few ideas and tips for you to incorporate into your next version.
1. Include an option that allows users to set how many replies to get back from your software.
For Example. If I were to use #RT#GPS#1234, it currently only sends 1 reply. The problem with this is that most GPS units are accurate withing 5 - 10 meters. I tested it on myself where I am and it picks me up as being 2 houses down. If there was an option to send me 3 replies, in 60 second intervals, at least I would get the average GPS location of the phone. If your phone is stolen, it would also be a good idea to have unlimited SMS replies with 60 second intervals so I can get real time minute by minute location on where my phone is. Maybe this might be an idea for your Pro version. Have the option for how many replies to get and also an option for interval time between each reply.
2. Another idea for Pro version. Hide the RemoteTracker Icon from the Apps menu, or disguise it as a useless setting so if a thief were to look in the Apps menu, they wouldn't see it straight away, so wouldn't be forced to reset the ROM. Most thieves aren't smart enough to reset the phone as soon as they steal it, They normally wait till they get home..... but if he saw a tracking program, it would make them either turn the phone off right away, or reset the ROM right away.
3. I dont know much about Android programming, but an idea for capturing the Camera is to embed the photo into an MMS, or as an attachment in an email. Trying to muck around with FTP would be a waste of time because the average user wont have an FTP server, and you dont want to set up a central one because it would give every noob hacker a target to try and get into.
I will keep playing around and get back to you with any other problems or ideas for you.
