S3: Need two apps recommendations 1) import contacts to phone 2)custom app brightness - Android Apps and Games

hey guys I need two apps
1. An app that imports contacts that are on my google account or in a go contact vcf files and puts it in my S3 phone storage. Purpose, I want a hard secure back up of my contacts on my phone. Let's say for security reasons (theoretical) I don't want to sync with google servers at all
.I tried an import app or two from android market but I don't see it in any of the various phone apps as reading under my phone (ie dw contacts, go contacts). I have the contracts backed into google csv and a vcf file. How can I import and export it easily to my external sd card?
I would typically use go contacts on my bravo, but it bring up a reoccuring (and annoying) error message on S3s, but there doesn't seem to be a dialer out there that imports/exports contacts in a vcf/csv (i'm open format) and doesn't force you to sync to google servers?
So for instance under DW dialer If I check show phone...my contact list is empty, but if I check my gmail account it populated EVEN if I import the vcf from go contacts or the newly created google csv into my phone using an app like import contacts
Any recommendations appreciated
2. I don't use touchwiz and I'm not sure this is a feature for it, but what if I want to easily control the brightness on different apps on my phone. For instance I do most of my kindle reading in the dark, but it requires a good amount of backlight for it...moreso than say browsing or gaming. I know on my cousin's Nexus 7 he can do a 'two finger' up and down to control brightness. Is there a way I could get these apps to control brightness through an easy swipe and or have another app remember the brightness of individual apps?

Doesn't the stock contacts app (at least in CM9) already import/export vcf? It looks like it exports in version 2.1 whereas gmail exports in v3.0,

why don't you export your google contacts on your computer and transfer it to your sd card? or upload it and download it on your phone.
as for the brightness, if you want to root and mod/install custom roms you can have brightness controls through the status bar.

tech I played around with app all of last night, but I don't get it. It say it sets the lums by 'environment' That's a very general term. It doesn't seem to do it by app. I'm wondering if this is possible. I put on automation and then turned it off and set custom lums by app, but it just stuck to the last lum selected.
Any quick idea on what I'm missing here. I feel like its something simple. I read through the tutorial and setup multiple times
I tried to import my google contacts as csv but they don't show up in the phone.
I can't believe this isn't more in demand. To have a hard secure copy vcf/csv of your google contacts. I don't want to sync my personal info with google servers.

Can Google Contacts be imported to Phone?

All my contacts are based on Google Contacts since I have no idea how to sync this phone memory to Outlook 2007. Now I found out that you can't add individual ringtones along with other features if you are pulling them from google. I would like to know if there is a way to export them to the phone memory.
i did that by setting the view to only gmail contacts and then going to menu - more and then export to sd card, then changed view to phone only and then back to menu - more and then just imported them back, then long press edit and added custom ringtone. It did mess up a few of them i think just a few businesses that were imported from google maps and ended up as just phone numbers on the phone view but i just changed the links when i was done and then went back.
Thanks, thats what I figured out eventually. The only thing is also copies your sim card contacts so now i'm deleting the sim contacts one by one since I don't think there's a way where you can do a mass delete on it.

[Q] Change list of contacts

I originally imported Gmail contacts last November but now I have a cleaned-up Gmail list. It would be easier to completely delete the gTab file and reimport, but I can't find how to so... nor can I find a likely suspect data file on the tablet. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Tom
Not sure but maybe you just have to remove your Gmail account and create it again. Probably it will sync the new contact list
BR
Somehow it appears to me that the e-mail app is separate from the contacts app, and I haven't found anything clarifying what must be done to delete contact entries. There do not seem to be any controls to delete contact records one at a time or as a checklist ala File Expert. I was using the tablet mail app before I decided to experiment with the contacts list. I thought I might recognize a likely data but not yet.
On my phone it's under Settings -> Accounts & sync but I don't see any such option on my g tab. Maybe just not exposed in the older version of TNTLite I'm running. Worth a look...

[Q] Importing CSV contacts?

Saved my contacts from my iPhone on a CSV format.
I put this file on the external SD card (how do U know which is the external and which is the internal by the way?)
Went into the Infuse contacts, then "import/export" and I get "could not find Vcard contacts" (or something like that).
Any help?
Thanks so much

THANK YOU!
Why would anyone want their entire GMAIL contacts synced to their phone? Please, is there no other way?
Thank you

I think you can set up gmail and the phone to only sync a subset of contacts.

You can. Best set up at gmail.com
You can set too sync...not to sync and can set predetermined groups. (in the past user created groups would not sync I have not played with that in several months)
once set up properly the whole google sync thing is pretty slick.
One can also login to multiple gmail accounts on the phone.
I have two currently...the main log in which is personal/phone
And a secondary account which is work
Keep in mind that changing the main phone account requires a hard reset.
Within the phone you can set up which contacts are pulled from gmail like including only contacts with phone numbers etc.

[Q] Contacts Management & Duplicates

I have moved contacts from SIM to phone, added contacts over time, and before changing phones, moved all contacts to the SIM creating duplicates. Some I think are from facebook and have no numbers. Some I have up to 5 duplicates.
In display options I have "Only contacts with phone numbers" unchecked with everything below also checked. A particular contact has 6 entries. A couple have numbers, most are empty and one facebook. When I select show only contacts with numbers I get 2. When I go to SIM management to export to SIM I see 6 again. There is no way to distinguish which has a number or any way to filter. All there is, is a checkbox and a name 6 times. I even merged the 5 of them and when I went to export to SIM I saw all of them separately again.
I can't write all 800+ to the SIM so how can I only transfer the ones with numbers attached??? The only way I can delete the contacts without numbers is to open the contact, see if it has a number and delete. I seriously don't want to do that 500 times.
Is there a smart way to write only the contacts with numbers to the SIM? I surely would appreciate the help!
Running 2.3.6
Why are you saving to sim card? Just manage them in contacts app and they sync with Google account between devices. There's an option in Google desktop contacts to merge duplicates.
BTW, sim contacts are stored as one contact per number. So a phone contact with 2 numbers will actually create 2 separate entries when exported to sim card.
I'm looking up Google Contacts and it has been discontinued. I found Google Desktop, but then started running across all these plug-in and fixes for different problems of mismatched databases...
I write them to the SIM so I can switch it another phone and have them all. It's just how I've been doing it since before any back-up capabilities. I suppose I need to open a new email account that doesn't have a couple of hundred email addresses to deal with and no phone numbers. Facebook contacts got copied as a name only because they were an entry I guess. No email address or anything.
I do need to find some way of merging all the duplicates. Do you have another suggestion that's not going to require me to read and dig up a discontinued program that I can continue to use? lol
I'm referring to the contacts in your Google (i.e. Gmail) account, certainly no discontinued and no plugin required, just log into it from a browser and go to the contacts tab. All of your contacts should be synced from your phone and you can find duplicates and merge there, which will then sync back to your phone.
Guess I'm making the assumption that you have a Gmail or Google apps account, which is almost a necessity with an Android device.
^ what he said. Its much easier to manage contacts in Gmail and have it sync over. If you change number or lost your phone no need to ask people for their number ever.

I agree that it's easier to maintain it how you say.
That was nuts! I thought they were already synchronized with gmail, but I guess not. I went through and deleted what I wanted in gmail, then everything in my phone. I went to sync bac and it said it couldn't becuase of too many deleted contacts. I thought, yes, just delete them. Then I watched all my contacts disappear from my gmail account on my PC. Gmail has a cool feature to resore contacts as they were minute by minute. Eventually I got the whole list back and on my phone.
Thanks for the help! Saving them to the SIM is old school now...
I rooted my phone last night and thinking about installing ICS, the second leaked version UCLD2 because I'm not liking the lock screen on 2.3.6. I want to find a setup for my Skyrocket that people are liking, but that's kind of hard.... Hey, here's a great ROM. Camera is broken, WiFi has issues, screen gets stuck in wrong orientation... but it's great! Does't seem to be much out there for the Skyrocket. I was looking in the forum here under my correct phone type. Suggestions? I know, wrong thread, just asking a BTW...
ROM
check out skyrocket Android development for Listing of Roms. I'm using SKYICS
I think that's where I got the UCLD2. I don't like it at all. I don't know if apps don't work because they're not ready, of if it's this version of ICS. People say it sucks for the battery and it's because messaging sits there and uses 90 of the cpu even in my pocket and the phone gets hot for no reason. I'll look up yours. Thanks Raven
Just click menu and merge with google

[GUIDE]Sync local calendar with Google account[No root]

Hi guys!
Added many calendar entries and then realized that you have added it to the local calendar? Android syncs only the calendar which is connected with your Google Account. So if you want to transfer all entries from local calendar to the Google calendar, you have come to the right place
To achieve this, kindly follow these steps and you will be good to go:good: :-
1. Download this app on your phone - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.idea.backup.smscontacts
2. Open it and go to Calendars Backup--->Backup
3. Chose the file name and start the backup.
4. Then transfer the backup file to your pc. It will be in /sdcard/SmsContactsBackup/calendars
5. Open up the backup file on your pc. I'd highly recommend you to use Notepad++ for this. You will see multiple <Calendar entries at the top of the file. Look for the entry which has this attribute:- account_type="LOCAL"
Note down the _id attribute for this <Calendar entry.
6. Now look for <Calendar entry which has name="[email protected]" attribute and note down the _id attribute. Here xyz is your gmail username.
7. Now open Find & Replace and replace this -
Code:
calendar_id="1"
with
Code:
calendar_id="2"
Here, 1 is the _id for LOCAL <Calendar entry and 2 is the id for your Google Calendar (in my case). It could be different for you. So basically whichever calendar entry is set as local, will be converted to the google calendar's entry so that it can be synced
8. Now transfer the modified file back to /sdcard/SmsContactsBackup/calendars
9. Now open Superbackup--->Calendars and click on Delete all calendars.
10. Then restore the modified backup and re-sync your phone with the google calendar. All your local entries will now appear as google calendar entries and will get synced properly to your account.
Enjoy

abcdjdj
I have been looking for something like this for several days now. I haven't tried it yet but I will soon and I can't wait. Thank you for sharing.

Glad to hear that at least someone found it useful.
Sent from my Xperia S using Tapatalk
Yeah this is very useful. I know most people only use the Google Calendar and don't ever worry about this but for the people that don't know the difference and then try to switch devices this is good to know. Great find!
Great thanks, that's exactly what I was searching for !!
You saved me 2hours of re-entering many bithdays and garbage-colection-days
Entries disappear when syncing.
Hello. I tried this one for my dad's Xperia S. All went well up until I tried to sync it with his google account. After it finishes syncing, all the calendar entries just disappear. Help please?
Hello, I tried this method and everything looks like it is working, when I restore the modified backup it says it is updating 601 entries to the calendar, which is about right - but I am still not seeing them on the calendar.
Do most phones not have a method of exporting local calendars which can then be imported to Google Calendars or other calendars?
Easier way to do it:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.applisto.copyevents.pro
This allows to periodically move events from one calendar to another and, when using it for the first time allows to specify which time frame has to be considered (into the past and into the future).
Copy: events copied from 1 calendar to the other.
Mirror: tracking changes
Move: original event is removed, only left in target calendar.
It is powerful, be careful to read explanations and features.

I was unable to get this guide to work at all. However, another suggestion here worked well. The basic idea is to export an existing calendar as an ICS file and then import it to Google (or wherever) using a desktop computer web browser. The free program referenced in that post worked for me. I was able to export a single calendar as an ICS without issue. However, I couldn't use the suggested program to import a calendar; I had to use the Google Calendar website instead.
you can migrate the events you've already entered on the Phone's calendar (to which you've been adding events with the Samsung Calendar App) into Google Calendar for free using a tool such as Calendar Sync Trial. Open the app and go to "Export" to create an ics (iCal) file containing the phone's calendar events, then import that file into a Google Calendar using a browser, or the same app. You can get Calendar Sync Trial from https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.icalparse.free
