[Q] Backing up data question..

Hi, well I been using ClockworkMod Recovery v3.2.0.1 for my TF.. something horrible happened..
I backed up my data before I flashed my stuff.. as usual.. but I've never actually have to use the restore feature until now...
Well.. I flash one of the new Kernel, and some other stuff.. and it cause my TF to basically restored itself to Factory mode.
So I used my Back-up from Clockwork.. and it basically only restore SOME of my apps..
Iono if there an option i can change, but the clockwork in my nexus one restores everything...
My question is..
Is there a way to back-up and restore my stuff THE WAY IT USED TO BE next time I mess up? even with the settings and icon placements.
I basically lost 15 lvls in Sentenel 3 + a high score in Dragon, Fly! (3 day of grinding)
I still have the back-up files, if there's a way to restore my stuff the way I wanted it'll be greatly appreciated, im still hoping there's something I didn't do right..
CWM nand restore will put you back EXACTLY to when you made the nand backup. It basically take a "snap shot" of your ROM, settings, everything at that point. So any apps installed or data inquired after the nand backup will be lost when that nand is restored.
For apps and data use Titanium backup, again even with tb, it will restore only the latest data that you made a backup of.
If you play games and don't want to lose levels ect, backup data more frequently. TB even have auto backup schedule you can set

so.. which back up should I use to back up save games? i dont really understand the nand thing.. I have tb too.. but iono why tf doesnt wana back it up..

As I understand it, it is *meant* to work like:
Code:
$ dd if=/dev/{internal memory} of=/Removable/MicroSD/{CWK back up dir path...}
but without giving you a whopping 16 or 32 gig image file. Wouldn't be surprised if it was just a TApe aRchive at heart. Which reminds me, I really should boot into CWM and back up my phone .

Kinda.. not quite a block for block copy of the raw device (which would give you a 16 or 32 GB file.) Basically it copies all the files out of each partition (ie. data, system) wraps it up into a big image file and generates an md5sum.

cwm restore

hello guys, i have 1 problem that i was ignoring for too long, anyways, when i use cwm backup, it backups evrything, including sd ext , now when i restore, it restore evrything,
BUUUT , my applications are not working, i mean, they are there, i can see them, they take memory but cant use them, applications from sd ext,
i was using s2e .
as u can see on picture, they are grey, and have some sd mark near them, i am so noob
its pretty urgent, if anyone know what to do say, or i just flash over rom lol, i hate doing nan backup and restore when have a2sd s2e or ungaze (((((
figured that , since my dalvik is on internal and app data on sd ext , my system afther restore doesnt want to mount sd ext partition. what could be problem?
anyone???? formated sd card again, and made new partition again, restored system again , but it wont restore sd ext part, and cant mount sd ext afther i reboot, hwat can cause that problem guys??
Using s2e ??? What Rom are u using??

I installed the Cyanogenmod A2SD, before of it I installed the script for him, then I marked Apps are on the SD> Dalvik Cash on SD-EXT> Move in A2SD and when everything is almost A2SD system should I reboot. Then I installed the applications and restore everything works fine.
i am on cm mod ofc, for s2e , just problem is, i keep dalvik on intenral, app on sd ext, when i go nandroid restore, sd ext partition wont mount anymore.
zimis, that is same a2sd as for normal roms?

I don't know. I use A2SD version 1.0.
I don't get it:
Is there a solution to the problem? Because I just ran into it as well which is pretty annoying because it's my girlfriends phone and guess what: She hates it when I fiddle with it to "make it better" ending up with a dead phone! :/
Question:
What is the solution to restore nandroid backup when using s2e, it get's fully restored w/o errors but after reboot most apps are "gone" even Root is gone. When I try to install an app it says: You replace an app. So thats not working either...

What's happening here is that the symlink of the apps is gone.
The files are still present, but the system doesn't recognize them as "apps".
Idk how to solve these when using s2e, but link2sd has an option which allows restoring symlinks.

No clue about the root part though.
Did u try s2e patch by pavel...i think that may solve the problem..i hope so..

Since i didn't really find a solution I had to start from scratch and this time I used your great Tutorial about Link2SD a MUCH better solution than S2E.
BUT: I moved nearly everything exept the Holo Launcher to SD and still I only got 50 MB on data. I just don't understand... shouldn't it be nearly 140 MB or so? I did move everything (dalvik as well).
What might be the problem here?
Will it work the next time I'll make a Nandroid backup?
Slightly OT:
My other problem was that I did a mistake by only backing up user app with TB, so I had to get contacts and such from the backup which worked neither with TB nor with AppExtractor so possibly the nandroid was missing the symlinks already. So the long way was to extract files by hand and move it back to the new system. Than I had to start again from scratch because when I moved Swype to System something went so terribly wrong that it threw an error so often, I couldn't do anything to remove files. I tried fixing it by "Fix Permissions" but that made it worse and all the symlinked apps got me errors! It was a terrible long night.
@cosmickamal:
I couldn't because I could neither open s2e nor could I install s2e again because it gave me a "Do you want to replace the existing one?" and I still couldn't fire up s2e.
Well I hope this is fixed.
What I learned:
Do not combine S2E with Nandroid backups and ALWAYS backup EVERYTHING with TB, too. Just in case!
Thanks for your help.

Why do you NEED so mich mem free? Link2sd doesn't move app private data, like for eg, my custom whatsapp has 20mb data which remains inside the data partition consuming space.
I have 30 mb of space left, but I can still install Ingresd oh-so-easily.
Believe me, having 140mb free system resources would be a waste in this case.
More judicious use is the existing setup.
And nandroid works, tried and tested countless times by my own self

S2e or most other memory solutions don't mess with your contacts and messages and other system data
I don't need all the memory free but if my girlfriend comes wining in a few days because it is full again - well, I try to avoid that.
And I had like 30 MB free before and that wasn't enough if a view updates were running (dunno why).
Good to know that Nandroid works now. Thank you.

multiboot CM7 to Froyo

i may go back to froyo for a weekend, going to a 24Hour GT race, would like everything working properly, vid, cam etc. basically nice and stable.
if i multi boot to froyo do i have to wipe cache/dalvik cache and sd ext. sd and sim inserted or not?
tried this before, ended up with continuos fc of apps when i inserted my sd card.
anyone give a step by step, and how to restore back to CM7?
(secretly hoping CM& is sorted by then, well, we can hope, eh?)
For g3mod,
Use kmapp by rapier07 to configure your multiboot settings
Enable multiboot
Enter recovery backup img and flash the froyo ROM img via multiboot
This will automatically backup your current ROM erase system, cache, etc., and flash froyo on your ROM
If you want to revert back to cm7 just flash the img you previously backuped.
Alternate:
Enter recovery backup everything
wipe everything except sdcard(wipe sd ext)
Flash img or update zip
When you want to revert back to cm7 just restore previous backup
and everything will be back
You will definitely get fcs if you don't wipe sd ext while using second method
In first method you don't need to do anything extra

nice on allspark
first option seems the best i have KMApp 1.4.1 installed, but i cant find the multiboot options, data-kernel-tweaks and data conversion using menu button available.....
edit-running G3MOD 2.5 Kernel, forgot to say.
Didn't you find multiboot in data preferences . I think you find it right away on the main screen
Enable multiboot
If you don't try 1.3 which same great features
I can't confirm this as I am on fugumod and cm9 (not supported)
Edit: sorry dude
It is multiosdata
Sent from my GT-I5800 using XDA
use option 2 then!
@Skivit
Check my sig for multibooting...it's all there....but with g3mod 2.5 multiosdata ain't working somehow....dalvik gets wiped when u switch rom....automagicaly....only thing u should do is data wipe when switching to froyo & restore froyo data from multiboot....any [Q]?....just say
if i hit problems, i'll give you a shout!
If all the data in your phone is really very important then also have a nandroid backup in case multiboot fails
Also copy your contacts to sim using contact2sim or save them on your sd card just in case anything fails
Multiboot, nandroid backup and every possible way you try to backup data are extremely unreliable and I lost so much of my data lots of times believing they would work

well....i never lost anything with multiboot.... you don't need full nandroid backup coz "backup_data" in multiboot is working perfectly....and only thingy is that due to multiosdata not working properly(e.g. data partition never gets restored)...so you have to format data & sd-ext partition before restoring other OS data to avoid any fc's due to overwriting data over existing data....that's all....otherwise it's safe...

[Q] no sd ext found, skipping back up of sd ext

When doing a backup in cwm, this is what it says right before completion. What does this mean?
Also, can you not rename ur backups. If you have more than one. How do you tell them apart?
Thank you
That's normal. If i remember correctly, its a partition inside your internal sd card for your external sd card and it's not mounted in CWM by default.
And you can rename it. Once you back up I'm CWM, boot your phone and go into your sd card. Inside clockworkmod/backups there's folders with date and time as the name, rename it to your hearts content
Sent from my SGH-T769 using xda app-developers app
sd-ext is an ext4 partition on the sdcard in addition to the normal fat32 partition. Just as an fyi, the defacto "standard" for alternative sdcard partitions also includes the ability to have a dedicated swap partition.
I have a proper sd-ext partition and get the same message, so it's likely that CWM isn't set up correctly. Nothing you can do about it unless you want to rebuild CWM
I also believe that partitioning the sdcard through CWM also doesn't work properly.

Everytime i renamed backup. It would never let me restore, if needed too. Due to MD5 checksum error (or something like that)
i googled why it was happening and read changing backup name will cause the issue.
So next backup i made, i didnt rename it, annd restored as expected. kinda sucks would like to no which back up, is which.

that's weird :/ I always rename my backups and it's never gave me that error on all 3 android phones i've had (htc thunderbolt, wildfire s, and the blaze). something like "Current-10/3-preICSkies" and it never hurts. of course, I always copy my backups to windows to store on my hard drive before I rename

So it is all good if we get this message?
correct, phones of yester-year had low memory and storage. people devised ways to make apps2sd prior to froyo and thus an ext partition on the sdcard was born. i didnt include it as any device since the sgs1 has had plenty of space (the samsung galaxy prevail's /data partition was only 140MB's which included things like google maps updates etc)
you can use rom manager to rename backups, but cwm generates an md5 sum off the folder name, in this case a very specific date

Can't you just make a folder name what you would like then put the back up into the folder that has the name you wanted to be able to tell them apart?
I just thought of it, Hey I actually came up with an idea on my own at xda, wow, not bad, it's about time though after so many years and not too technical either, Hey but I don't know if that is a good thing for me or not.
Well anyways I am going to try my new techniques. LoL
Oh hey I forgot why I was here's until just now, not only did my backup say the op title, but also said something about not backing up applications either
1) is that normal too!?
2) I looked for the back up and shows up fine I the new folder. Although I can't say I ever remeber after clicking backup then clicking the backup file seeing 4 other files to chose from, like system, data, etc.
What is really going on now? I thought after clicking on the file it would go to the confirm option and that was it.

[Q] Undo data wipe/undo changing FS

Hello everyone,
so I accidentally wiped my /data/media on my OnePlus One where all my backups where in because I wanted to try out F2FS . I didn't have in mind, that for doing that TWRP would have to format the whole userdata partition instead of just using rm for everything except /data/media like in normal wiping :silly:.
Now I wondered if there was any way to recover at least the last deleted backup, because I guess it's still lying around somewhere in the flash cells. I know that there are plenty of programs for PCs to accomplish that, but does anyone perhaps have an idea about how to do it on a phone, preferably without having to boot into Android, as it might overwrite the data when setting up? I thought about pulling an image of the partition via adb in recovery and try to recover the files from that on the PC, but I have no idea on how to get the image to my pc without storing it on the phone first, which would obviously definitely overwrite all the data. And also I don't know if that image would actually contain all the data because I couldn't find out if the flash uses wear leveling.
If anyone has got any idea I would really appreciate to hear it, even if it only says that it's impossible.
Many thanks in advance .
