What to do with rooted Milestone X2? - General Questions and Answers

So I decided to root my Milestone X2 from Bluegrass Cellular. However, after several hours of searching it appears I'm not able to do anything as far as creating a backup for installing ROMs. On top of that, I don't think there are even any custom ROMs for my phone. All my preliminary research about rooting that led me to pulling the trigger was conducted under the assumption that the Milestone X2 was just the Bluegrass generic name for Droid X2. I now realize this isn't the case.
So my question is, what can I do with my rooted phone now? I was all excited about trying custom ROMs, but I think the only benefit I can get from rooting with my phone is free tethering? If someone could please provide some insight, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks.

I need some help with my CDMA Milestone

Hello everyone,
I bought a Milestone from MTS (Manitoba Telecom Services) a couple months ago, but only recently discovered that it won't be receiving ANY updates. You know, like the 2.2 update that gives you flash, even though the Milestone is advertised as being "flash-ready" on Motorola's website? Anyway, I've decided to take the matter into my own hands and try updating it myself. Problem is, I'm pretty scared of bricking my phone. I've taken a look at quite a few guides, but none of them seem to have any information about my carrier, just Telus stuff which I'm not sure is safe or not to use on my device. I'd really appreciate some tips on how to do this correctly.
Here's some more information about my phone:
Milestone A854
Carrier: MTS (CDMA)
Firmware 2.1-update1
P.S: Motorola and MTS can suck it.
do a seach on the forums man. theres a whole board devoted to your phone. and dont worry, becuase flashing roms and such is software oremented, not hardware, theres little to no chance at all that you could mess the phone up beyond any state of use.
I've been searching for quite a while, but have still made no progress with my phone. Every time I try and flash the vulnerable recovery file, I get an error. My bootloader is 2C.6C.
Are you rooted? May be dumb question

[Q] Different methods for rooting i727R

When I bought my Rogers SGS2 a few weeks ago, I rooted it right away after finding some posts and software. I used this method:
DooMLoRD_v3_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su
But since then, I keep reading about Skyrocket-Easy-Root and SuperOneClickv2.2-ShortFuse, and it seems that there was more than one way to skin a cat.
I'm interested in the functional difference in having used one method versus another. For instance, if I've gone one way, will it change the way I do things going forward. Have I locked myself into one way of doing things, recovery, flashing etc.
Also is there a way to know "how" you rooted your phone, in other words, which method?
Thank you ever so much.
Quick, polite bump!
There's no difference aside from any extras that are installed ie busybox, squlite3, etc....
You aren't locking yourself out of anything by rooting a certain way. It just helps to have different methods for each users level of experience.

Thank you.
i rooted with zergRush as well and was wondering this same Q , thanks for asking and others for the reply sets me at ease that i not missing out on some function or somthing

[Q] Motorola XYBoard 8.2 rooting/unlocking bootloader?

I got the XYBoard 8.2 yesterday, and really find it difficult to understand why, instead of figuring out ways to unlock and root this device, I've only found people *****ing about what makes the Xoom soooo much better. Whatever. I needed a device that is smaller and lighter than the Xoom, and I needed an IR transmitter. Rooted or not, this thing is better than the Xoom.
If anyone has any information on how to unlock the bootloader, and perhaps even root, I would greatly appreciate it. Frankly just need to kill some of the Verizon bloatware. Thanks.

You're going to be SOL on unlocking the bootloader. Rooting thus far hasn't happened either. Everything I've tried with my 10.1 has been fruitless. I know of one other looking into it but no guarantees.
Just returned my defective Tab 7 Plus for an 8.2 Xyboard - love to get it rooted, if for no other reason than to use Titanium Backup.
Fingers crossed!
Any progress?

I'll take a device I can actually modify thanks.

Major Security Bug, or Universal Root?

http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/07/04/bluebox-android-security-bug_n_3545216.html
So we have a bug present in virtually all of the Androids. Everyone's talking about the security risks, but all I can think of is that it would be an excellent method to root my otherwise unrootable phone (Softbank 201M; Japanese Razr M).
I imagine some slight tailoring may be required to get this to work on different phones (changing which App is replaced, version numbers, etc), but that would be basic, compared to the code base itself.
Has anyone actually started exploiting this for good instead of evil? I'm wondering if this is something I should try to do myself, or if it'd be better to just let someone with more free time do it first.

Vulnerabilities leading to root are always a security risk. Problem with this one, is it can be possible to pull off without the user directly knowing what is going on. Bluebox security has not released details, but as soon as they do I am sure we will start seeing some roots based off it.
Now, what is this about Softbank 201M and Japanese Razr M not being rootable? Do you have either of these phones or their firmware?

This. I'm sure we'll be seeing a flood of rooting methods based off the Bluebox discovery, given that they say this flaw is present as far back as Donut.
The Thanks button is just to avoid "THANKS" posts in threads. Nothing more. Don't defeat the purpose of why it was introduced.

The 201M is the Japanese Razr M. I do indeed own the phone, and the firmware (at least the old version) is available in the Razr M forum. I've spent a lot of time trying and modifying different root methods to work with it, and nothing has worked so far. Haven't gone far enough to really risk bricking my phone, though (like trying to install the Verizon firmware and root that). No one has yet found a root for it, though. Possibly due to a lack of developers; possibly due to Softbank waiting months after the release of updates in the US to find the root methods and break them before release (such as destroying the entire ADB backup to make that root method fail). As you might imagine, it's somewhat frustrating. Doesn't help that there's a lack of developers with the specific version that know much about rooting at all.
Even tried the Japanese sites. No luck.

[Q] Confirmation that I can't do anything with this phone

I played around with my Droid X (installed CM and the like) years ago, but I haven't tried to do anything with my Razr Maxx HD since I'm in grad school. I've just been keeping it up to date with OTA updates, but I'd like to try roms again, namely the newer CM.
From what I've read, I need an earlier version of the OS in order to unlock the bootloader or root the phone.
I've also read (and have found from some personal experience the past couple days) that it is impossible to use RSD lite (6.1.4) to downgrade to literally any OS older than the one currently installed.
Is there anything I can do with this phone? Can I, either with or without RSD Lite, get to an earlier version? Can I at least root it so I can use Ti backup?
Or is there literally nothing I can do with this phone?
Two final, quick questions. Is anyone still working on this phone, or is it too much a pain andeveryone has moved on?
Finally, now that Moto is google, is the Moto X (and future phones) more dev friendly? Or do I need to think about moving away from Moto if I want to play around with my phone?
Sorry this is a repeated question, I guess I'm mostly bummed about what I've found and just want to be 100% sure I'm not able to do anything before I give up.
Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do. Pretty much if you want to mod a Moto now, you need to get a Dev X or a M/HD that has the bootloader already unlocked.

recently turned my MHD in for an insurance claim (cracked screen)... didn't think about receiving a different MHD with up to date OTA's. LUCKILY received one with 9.18.79... so I can still obtain root... but lost being unlocked but like RikRong stated above... those are pretty much your only options now.. best of luck.
