WiFi battery drain question - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

When I'm at home, I always switch my phone to WiFi. I always get a great signal in my house but the battery drain seems high. I did notice that the up and down arrows under the WiFi icon are constantly blinking. If I have the phone on 4G, the lights do not blink constantly and my battery life is good. Do the blinking lights mean there is some type of data being transferred? Why would they blink on WiFi, but when I switch to 4G they don't?

Some apps only download when they have WiFi available.
I have G+ set to upload photos over WiFi only, Play store only downloads app updates if it has WiFi available, etc.
I would start with checking of something like that is going on.

You're not alone
I have a similar issue (will open a new thread) but mine is always in "downloading" mode and consumes a VERY large amount of data traffic on my network. It's an android system task that's causing it. I've disconnnected my router from ALL other connections (including internet) and the download when connected to the router continues.
This just started happening to me and happens on multiple different JB ROMs, including stock.

Use a build.prop editor to change your WiFi scan interval to be as low as possible

I fixed my WiFi downloading problem by odin back to stock.

It's too bad you can't use the "Mobile Data stats" thing to investigate which app is causing it.
Is there an equivalent for Wifi traffic? Would be nice.

WiFi keeps turning off...

Hi all,
I just got a Droid 2 Global today and I notice if you leave it alone for a while (which is hard to do with a new phone) the WiFi will turn itself off. The first thing I do with new Android phones is turn the WiFi Sleep Policy to "Never". And that is what I did today, but it still appears to be sleeping.
When I wake the phone I notice that the WiFi is off (Both up in the notification bar and the widget is dark) and the 3G is off as well. The only that is showing is bars. In about 5 seconds the WiFi will turn back on and connect.
Now this only happens if I don't play with the phone for a while. Turning the screen off and back on the WiFi will be on like normal.
As this annoys me that it is doing it, it is the 3G is off at this time as well. Which means the phone isn't getting any data during the period that it is off. Which isn't good since I rely on Google Voice for all of my texting, which won't come in unless there is a internet connection.
Any help on this will be great,
Thanks
I did find out what was going wrong last night. In Settings>Battery Manager>Battery Mode it was set to Nighttime saver. That would have been bad because I work 3rd shift and I'm up and using this mainly at night.

WiFi Seriously draining batery!

First and foremost let me say that I love this phone. But I am having an issue with serious battery drain that's occurring when I have WiFi on. I need to use WiFi Calling in my house, and it worked flawlessly on my previous mytouch 4g, running under the same conditions. In fact, my wife now has that phone and it works great, we actually manage to save a ton of battery with wifi calling turned on.
So when I got the Sensation I hoped for more of the same, great battery life when at home due to wifi calling. However, that is not the case, when I have wifi on, with or without wifi calling enabled, my battery drains at a rate of about +-10% an hour! And thats with out even touching it! Without wifi on, 2-4% per hour battery drain.
Speeds when I do things over wifi are blazing fast, and the signal is full bars, so I know the phone is not searching for the wifi. With wifi, and minimal use, I max out at 5-6 hours! Not sure what to do, as not using wifi is really not an option.
One other thing, coming from the mytouch 4g, a highly underrated phone imo, I do see some lag that wasnt present in the "lesser" phone. In particular, the USA Today app, for example, on the Mytouch scrolling was smooth as butter, not so much on the sensation, I also see it in the Android market when I look at my apps, same app list on both phones, mytouch scroll is smooth as can be, Sensation is very jittery.
Maybe someone has some thoughts, or is having similar issues, cause I am so jealous of all the "OMG my battery lasted 6 months" posts!
Thanks in advance!
Because the phone comes stock with the WiFi sleep policy set to never. In my opinion that's a stupid decision on HTC's part. Easy fix though. Go into Wireless settings and clock on WiFi settings. Then click the menu key and click advanced. You will see the WiFi sleep policy menu. Just change it to "Never When Plugged in" or after 15 minutes. If you change it to Never when plugged in then the WiFi will go into sleep mode when ever you turn your display off.
Ive had it set to the 15 minute setting, but I thought that the wifi calling would block wifi from sleeping. Once when looking at the battery screen, I zoomed either on wifi or wifi calling, and it said something to that effect.

Sorry, I forgot you said you use WiFI calling. That might have something to do with it. I always keep mine of so it doesn't matter if my WiFi sleeps right away.
Wifi can't sleep!
I don't know if i should start a new thread but this was the closest to my problem I could find.
Basically I'm having the same WiFi battery drain issues, and I tried to do the usual Wifi Sleep 'after 15 mins' or 'Never When Plugged in' options in the advanced menu but it always reverts to just 'Never' after a few minutes.
On my power graph it shows that I have had continuous wifi on despite changing the settings. So its not just the option returning to default when i open the menu either.
I'm really confused here, is there something forcing my wifi to be on all the time?
Any help is much appreciated.
Make sure wi-fi best performance is not checked. That will drain battery faster also

[Q] Wifi Sleep Policy

What is the purpose behind the wifi sleep policy. I flashed to gingeritis and it recommends setting the sleep to 15mins for battery life. It appears to go back to the 3G/4G radio when wifi goes to sleep which I thought was counter productive and wiFi was better for battery life. Can any explain this to me?
I can't say this works for everyone, but I have "enable always on mobile data" disabled, so when I don't use my phone for 10 minutes or so it disables mobile data. If I have the WiFi sleep period set to 15, then it will disable all data in 10-15 minutes. Very useful if you have extended periods of time where your phone remains off.

HTC supplies a data widget that I use every day while I am at work. Go to personalize, then browse all HTC widgets and the data widget I use is the Data Dashboard. Its 43/58 on my phone but mine might not be right on as I remove a few of the widgets.
While I am at work I just click the mobile setting on the widget to turn data off while still maintaining my voice connect so I can receive txt and phone calls.
As for the OP I keep my wifi set to never sleep no matter what rom I'm on. This way when I'm at home my phone doesn't have to look for the network its always connected to my wifi access point. I have always heard the same as the OP that having wifi on is much better than using the network as far as battery life is concerned.
Setting wifi sleep policy to never is best for battery life. Letting the phone switch back to 3g uses more battery than just letting it stay on wifi all the time.

Thank you that's what I thought!

Can I save battery when I have poor signal

I have absolutely horrible signal at my school. Usually 1 bar of 4g to no service at all. Tryed to switch to 3g but still getting horrible drain. Down to 35% in 5 hours with 15 minutes of screen on time

Switch your phone Airplane mode, will turn off the cell radios.
You can still turn on WiFi while in Airplane mode if necessary.
edit: sorry, ninja'd but a bit more information, hope it helps as well
i'm guessing you need connectivity, otherwise, if you are just interested in saving battery, just turn on airplane mode. This will shut off your radios, and while you won't get any text or phone calls, it will save battery life. once you turn off airplane mode, your texts and any missed calls should show up.
also, check what else might be running in the background. live wallpapers, numerous sync programs (facebook, twitter, certain weather apps if they are set to upgrade) can also be causing a drain on your battery as well.
I recommend just turning off mobile data. That way you still receive texts and calls, but nothing that requires data to kill your battery while it struggles to sync/download/etc. Now it wont save battery like airplane mode but I don't like not being able to receive texts and calls.

Question for Tasker users

Reboot your phone, then see how long after your android desktop comes up that the tasker notification shows up.
I seem to have an issue where it takes like minutes, and only shows up after I lock/unlock my phone. This is new to KK for me, I'm running completely standard, no task managers or anything, just curious if its the same for anyone else.
Mine takes around 15 seconds

No for me. All good here. en.EU.
I barely can tell the difference between the startup times with and without Tasker.

What about battery consumption with and without tasker?

I can not tell, some of my Tasker stuff is about battery conservation (turns off mobile data and switches to 2G at home and work, switches to 3G and turns off the wifi outdoors, puts the phone to airplane between midnight and 5AM etc.) or messes up my battery stats (for example keeps the screen alive when USB debugging is connected) Of course it needs some juice, but it conserves me even more.
Mine takes about 15 seconds also
