Hi,
My Nexus S was working great and suddenly the power button stopped working, now when I try to flash anything via fastboot it freezes at the bootloader screen, the volume keys don't work just there.
I wanted to flash stock ICS bootloader, radio and ROM but I guess there's no way to flash without fastboot? adb works though.
Thanks for your help!

Is your power button failing by any chance? If the power button fails and stay in a clicked position, you will not be able to scroll.
No, the power button, physically, is perfect, just as it was before. it just doesn't 'function' anymore.

So it works or it doesn't work? That's what I mean by failing, when it stops working, you will not be able to scroll in fastboot mode because it's stuck as clicked in. In fastboot you cannot send 2 keystrokes at the same time, so as long as the power button is stuck you're out of luck.
Sometimes playing with the power button will make it unstuck, sometimes it will not. It's a very common problem with the Nexus S. Some people had decent luck opening up their Nexus and cleaning the power button while others sent their phone to repair.
No, it does not function. BUT, what I'm thinking is, if i the power button was CLICKED then the first option is "Restart Bootloader" and it would have been auto-selected resulting in a reboot-loop, but I do see the bootloader screen and it doesn't disappear until I remove the battery and restart.

That's not how it works though. It's constantly clicked, not as clicking only once the bootloader appears. I know it's strange, but it's really a well known issue.
If you remove the battery and put it back in, does your phone start automatically? That's also a sign the power button is stuck.
No, If I remove the battery and reinsert, it does NOT autostart unless its also connected to the PC via USB.

Alright. Does not necessarily mean the button isn't stuck though.
Do you have a custom recovery? If you use Clockworkmod or TWRP, you can flash nearly anything from there, rom, radio and so on as long as they're zipped in a way one of these recovery will understand.
If you are still able to boot your rom and it's rooted, but you don't have a custom recovery, you can flash one from within Android.
Oh, I thought you could only flash bootloader, radio and ROM via fastboot, atleast thats how I did so far. I download factory images and they come as .img files, is there anywhere I can find a flashable stock ICS .zip?
Yes, I can boot into the stock JB rom, and yes I can even access clockwork recovery.

You were doing it the good way though, fastboot is a very strong utility.
Here's one flashable with CWM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1569509&highlight=rom
ONLY for GSM Nexus S. Not for 4G. This is really important.
One more way I was able to confirm that the phone indeed freezes on bootloader is that adb commands are accepted on the home screen or on CWM (./adb reboot bootloader for example), but neither adb nor fastboot works on the bootloader (error: device not found).
I opened the phone to clean the power button as you suggested, but its already quite clean, there's nothing to do there. However, I broke my sim tray in the process! :'(
Now, no power button and no network!

Ouch! That's not good at all. :|
Some people blast the button with compressed air or clean it with isopropyl alcohol.

okay guys so surprisingly i havent seen anything on here about the button combo to get into bootloader on your one x (or recovery)
i think its just volume down and power ? but a lot of the time it just boots up like normal.
anything specific i can do to get it to work better?
also once i re lock my bootloader, there is no way for me to get the phone to boot up normally, like no matter what i do it just reboots into the bootloader what should i do?
(basically im trying to get from clean rom on 1.82.5 base , back to offical stock 1.73.5)

You have to hold vol down the entire time until it gets to the bootloader. Also, turn fastboot off.
Or you can always "adb reboot recovery" if you're at a computer

I've found that if you lock the bootloader while on a rom that uses an insecure boot.img like cleanrom does you'll see "security warning" on the bootloader screen and the phone won't boot to anything except the bootloader. It's ok though because you can install the ruu from there.

how do you disable fastboot? (or you mean while the phone is running normally in settings?)
i tried running the ruu from the bootloader and it wouldnt work though
is there a different rom i could flash, then be able to lock and flash back to stock 1.7?

This method of getting into the bootloader always works for me.
It involves counting so read it through first as you need to act quickly:
Hold down the power button untill you see the capacitive buttons start flashing.
After a few seconds they will stop flashing.
Hold the volume down button immediately.
Then hold the power button for around 3 seconds and release it, while still holding the volume up button.
Hold it until you boot into the bootloader screen.

Hey people my first post so you can call me whatever you want
Here is the thing:
I rooted the phone, installed a custom ROM and such, on the process I guess I installed this Clockwork Mod Recovery v5.8.3.1.
Well I wanted to change the ROM so I downloaded the new one (lastest trickdroid) and follow the steps, BUT!, when trying to acces the fastboot thing on that menu that can't remeber the name of, I jsut can't get into it.
When I tart the phone pressing volume down + power, instead of going to that menu it goes to clockwork mod. I was suposed to "Flash the stock boot.img from the ROM with fastboot", but well I dont know what I did or wahtever, I can't aces that menu.
What should I do?

I am having what seems like the same issue with my phone. Just posted a thread not too long ago asking for help. One person (a SR. Member) informed me to try to restore using a NANDROID backup (which I dont have). Going off of his advice, if you have the backup, try that. If not, we both seem to have the same problem. Good luck with your issue, I will be checking both our threads for solutions from now on!

Extra Help (Maybe)
Hey again, I found some useful information that allowed me to get into my bootloader! If you are still stuck in CWM, use the volume down button to go down to the "advanced" button at the bottom of the list. Since this is a button that leads to another list and not a direct action, you can hold down the power button when highlighted over it and turn the phone off. From there, just hold Volume Down and Power as you would normally do to boot into the bootloader. Hope this helps since it worked for me!
So:
-Navigate to "advanced" (Just highlight over it)
-Hold power button for 10-15 seconds
-Phone should power off
-Volume Down + Power to boot into Bootloader
-Profit?? (Just Kidding )
Again, hope I could be of some assistance!

Have a look at fragkiller1 thread for fixing your issue.
well now I can't even get into CWM sigh
A brief flash of a screen appears now while booting it, but it just skips to the actual OS. I have the fast boot disabled ohh man what do now? DId I mess up something?

thanks it worked perfectly. I thought it only worked powering off and turining it on and holding volume down.

Ya, make sure you got the right rom and get yourself back into the bootloader and you should see recovery there then do a full wipe and flash the rom and also if you feel you might of flashed the wrong boot.img reflash it to make sure.
So it's over, all solved.
I tried to install a new ROM but CWM got me an error mounting the SD, then I installed another recovery (TWR) and installed the new ROM (viper one s) flashed the boot.img and now everthing works wonders, for now.
Thanks a lot Darknites for trying to help me I really appreaciate that

Np dude glad you got it sorted but ya TWRP is way better for the sd mount and if you have 1.09 or lower Hboot it can also flash boot.img.
I went out partying last night, woke up to a crack on my nexus 5 and wouldnt turn on but the led would flash red. I figured it lost its charge. Charge the phone for few hours, phone would turn on and off right away as if it still were not charged. It would than shut off but restart to a screen that said Firmware Update- Please wait while it installs- B100. Nothing would install, it would stay at 0%. So I held the power button and now, it only turns on to the google sign and keeps looping from there. I tried to turn it on in recovery mode but that doesnt work either. My phone was never rooted, bootloader never unlocked and I never put it in debugging. I dont know what to do!
so the ol' 3-button combo doesn't get you to the bootloader?
Yes, it does. Forgot to mention that.

I don't know what you did, but your phone is not bricked. Hope you have a recent backup. If you can get into the bootloader I'd try a factory reset in recovery. If that doesn't work then you're going to have to unlock the bootloader and try to flash the factory image. None of this may work as idk what you did to your phone, but this is what I'd do.
Is flashing a factory image/unlocking bootloader possible even tho I can't get into the settings menu to turn on debugging option?

Alright, here. The catch-all solution: flash the factory image as in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2513701.
Just remember to cd to your adb directory, I made that mistake and almost fainted because I thought my device was totally broken when fastboot devices listed nothing.

If that's the case it sounds like you may have knocked something loose internally when whatever happened that caused the damage to your screen. Possibly a solder point or a cable coming loose.

^Why would he factory reset when the phone is wet? You'll short circuit it that way..
The only method of a factory reset I've read about was turning on in Recovery, waiting for the little android, and holding Vol + and Power. Thing is my phone would never get to the little android, just loop on the GOOGLE introduction. Is there another method to factory reset?

Turn your phone off. Then hold power + vol down. It should boot into the boot loader. You'll see a "start" Then use the vol rocker to toggle to recovery. Once there push the power button. You should be in recovery. Then use the vol rocker to toggle to factory reset. Then use power to select it.

fastboot reboot recovery
Edit, sorry that's not going to work. Find the stock recovery image. Then try

So I was able to boot in recovery and factory reset, although the problem still persists. I will try and flash all images tomorrow. Thanks for all the help! Happy holidays!
You all probably noticed that if the Settings->Power->Fastboot setting is enabled, Power+Vol_down will not work and the phone will do a standard boot. Is there anyway to force booting the phone into hboot? If not, this is a possible way to get bricked in case your ROM is messed up and the phone's last mode was to Fastboot.

Maybe I don't understand the question. Could you not just use:

or

You can only use those if adbd is running which means you either were successful in booting into recovery (and you can't do it as power+vol_down doesn't work), or you have a working ROM (see the OP).

I wish it was that simple. The ability to get to the menu seems to be related to the bootloader's ability to access /data. If the bootloader can't get to /data it looks to defaulting to NOT showing the hboot menu. I've noticed this on my phone. I have my phone encrypted which doesn't allow access to /data until you decrypt it. If you cancel out of the decrypt prompt then reboot the phone, you will not be able to power+vol_down (though I never changed the fastboot setting).

See the OP. Assuming your ROM is messed up and is not booting (happens a lot when your'e a flashoholic), you can't run any apps or even get to adb. I've never seen a phone that will not allow you to always be able to cold-boot into the bootloader. This is a serious problem for folks that plan to experiment with lots of ROM flashing.

In that case you hold power and volume buttons until the phone tells you it's going to restart or vibrates or you see the screen flash. Depending on what mode you are in it will do different things. At this point you can release power and move to only volume down.
If timed correctly you will land in hboot. Practice makes perfect.

dottat, thank you for your post. You are correct. This requires quite a bit of proper timing to succeed. To recap: In case you are in fast-boot power mode and/or have your phone encrypted and power+vol_down doesn't get you into hboot:
1. Power down the phone.
2. Hold volume_up and power.
3. Keep holding the above, you should see the animated HTC splash show up.
4. Keep holding the above, the screen will go dark.
5. Once the screen goes dark, quickly release power and volume_up and press volume_down.
6. If timed perfectly, you should land in hboot menu.
Thanks again to dottat for pointing it out.
I got this phone used. (Droid Razr HD) Not sure of its history. As far as I know it was all stock until today.
When I found out I could root and unlock the bootloader I did so. Then I wanted to go into recovery and make a backup (yea I know...did that backwards) I powered the device off...hit the volume rocker switch and the power button at the same time and it entered into the Boot Mode selection menu. I hit the volume down to move to the recovery option and then hit the volume up button to select recovery.
At this point the big red M & Dual Core Technology logo appears. Stays there for 1.5 minutes then disappears briefly, comes back on for 15 seconds and then boots the phone normally.
So....I downloaded and installed Rom Manager and had it flash the latest CMW Recovery, turned the phone off to access the newly flashed recovery and the phone again went to the big red M & Dual Core Technology logo set there for 1.5 minutes, disappeared briefly and then booted the phone normally.
So.....I downloaded the lasted CMW Recovery image and used ADB and Fastboot to flash the recovery. Same result. Cannot access the recovery.
So....I downloaded a Stock recovery image and used ADB and Fastboot to flash the stock recover. Same result....cannot access the recovery.
Can someone tell me what I am missing or what I am doing wrong? Or what I can do access recovery.? A rooted phone with an unlocked bootloader isn't much good if you can't access recovery.
Thanks for reading and for any advice you might be able to give.
Jeff
I believe when in the boot loader menu, you need to Volume down to your choice, then Volume up to select the highlighter choice. Pressing power just resets the phone as you experienced.

If you haven't tried it already, since you seem to have ADB setup and working, try to use "adb reboot recovery" and see if you have change in luck. If not, my knowledge does not go much further, I hope someone knows how to answer this for you. I can imagine how distraught I'd be.
The only other thing is to ensure you've installed the correct recovery:
Google Dhacker29 and choose the AndroidHosting site, choose msm8960.
(I can't post url's because i've had less than 10 posts... spam thing)
Since you seem to have unlocked bootloader with the most recent case of KitKat make sure you have the "TWRP2710-RAZR-HD_M-KITKAT.img" file.
I will say I didn't use ADB to push mine, I'm not home often, I used Flashify from the Google Play Store. I had no problem with this method.
Hope you can figure it out! Good luck!
