[Q] SD Card - How to put Apps Adtional files on it ? - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys !
I have a P3110 Tab, - 8GB running Cyanogen mod 9.
Recently I bought a 32 Gb SD Card for my tab, and now I have a question.
All the Apps that use aditional data on the device, like Games or the TomTom GPS, put the extra files on the main memory.
I want to know if is possible to trick Android, so the Apps look first on the externalSD than the onboard memory.
For me it's a pain, because my tab has only avaiable almost 5GB to use. And this space is used by instaled applications.
If I could move all the aditional data to external SD it would be great.
Thanks for any help !

Hi Kan !
Thanks for the answer, but reading this thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1786014&page=5 )
I found that my problem is bigger than I thought.
What I want is to Swap externalSD to internalSD.
My GPS application and Games would benefit from it.
I'm taking a look on the thread that you gave, It's a good fix, but I want a cleaner one.
Thanks anyway !

I've found a fix to my problem !

Tried it on CM 9 and worked flawlessly.

Moving apps to ext. SD card

Hello all
this is my first android phone.
i managed to move some apps to sd card, but only to the internal.
How can i get them to the external sd card ? the ext. card is a mount point inside the internal one, thats what i found out.
Cheers
Lorien
At this stage it cant be done.
Oh, so is it a specific problem with the LG FW or is it the current Android OS ?

It's a limitation of the Android File System in general, not of froyo, gingerbread or ice cream sandwich. This is how the OS works.
What you can do is to go the the phone settings then programs then app manager and there click one by one the apps and choose to move to the SD card. You will notice that you will still have a portion of the app running from the phone memory. This is something that you have to live with for the time being but at least the half of the app should have been moved to the SD so at the end of the day you will gain some space.
Yes thats what i already did, worked great, but i do still have a almost empty ext. sd card. All the apps i moved are still on the internal sd card.
How about using apps2ext ? This is a modified version of the original (pre froyo) apps2sd that uses a "hidden" ext2, 3 or 4 partition on the SD card. I can only find it as part of custom roms. I'm sure it needs root to work too?
Anyone know if that would work?

I think we might have success with that actually. I will give it a try and I will let you know.
Any progress in this matter ? My internal SD Card is already full ! Have to start removing apps to install others.
I think those Android OS limitations are pretty wierd, so the ext. card slot is just for photos, videos on an android phone then ?
I did try to use darktremor on this phone but it won't work on stock firmware. I think that we need to wait for CM7 before we are able to install the whole app on the external SD.

The main problem is not the apps themselves. So Darktremor's A2SD would not help. The problem is, the extra files for large games are automatically downloaded to internal sd memory. Which is limited to 7GB. New games require more than 500 MB's each, so 7 Megs would be enough for many of us, but not enough for some of us.
It is certainly enough for me right now, but you cant see what future brings.
Hi guys,
I'm having this problem now.
Basically, my internal memory is being used by don't know what and I have left around 400mb.
The problem is that I cannot download more 3D games, they require around 500mb each!
I have tried to delete photos, videos and apps that I don't use but even like that it's not enough.
So now, I have a empty SD Card of 16GB and a phone/system that doesn't let me use that free space for "nothing".
BTW I did transfer the internal apps to the SD card, but very little changed.
Does anyone managed to find a solution for it? how can they sell android phones claiming that you can expand the memory of it if you are not able to use that memory for apps?
I already feel sorry for those that have the Evo 3D which apparently comes with 1GB internal memory.
And how can I move the 3D games to the SD card?
i think we have to wait until firmware update .. right now still behide 2.2.2 not even on 2.3 yet .. so i think we could move all app to ext card until 2.3 or higher.. i have try all the app out there .. not even one of them working .. you can move to internal memory but not ext sd card ..
you can also resolve this problem by switching internal and external memory. this works fine for the phone but messes up mass storage mode in windows! so you will find problems mounting your sd-card in windows - so you have to use alternatives for file transfer (ssh, ftp, adb) - means this is pretty much for advanced users only

[Q] Samsung Tab 2 Apps to External SD Card

Hi all,
I've just purchased a Samsung Tab 2 7.0 P3113 due to the fact that it has an external SD Card slot. I have found that I can not move any applications to the external card. This was one of the primary reasons I purchased the device. I have been using android devices for a while and my first Sony X10, was rooted and running custom roms within the first few weeks after I purchased it. In any case, I have read a number of threads, regarding this subject for the Tab 2 but I have not been able to have an installed app be moved to the external SD Card. Most post will say you have to root the device, (which I have) and use apps such as App2SD. I have even gone as far as loading a custom ROM, but no success. My last resort is to actually partition and repackage a ROM for an external 64GB SD Card and attempt to boot off of it so I will have more space. If anyone has truly been able to move an installed app to the external SD Card could you please point me in the right direction.
I would like some help on this too. But the silence is haunting.
Found this under a compilation thread that covers the 3113's and is down further on the same page in this forum.

I hope this helps and sorry for the re-re-re editing
AFAIK (and correct me if Im wrong veterans), is a defect of the OS not hardware. ICS and JB of the GT2's do not allow it as the internal memory is already labeled as sdcard. or that seems to be the prevailing opinion so far. I would like a work around but short of flashing a custom rom and/or kernel it seems unlikely to happen. Downside to that is some things don't work all the way in some roms. Ahh for the old days of my stock+ on my incredible. wait. Im still using it from back last summer and it works fine. TY wildstang!!

Hail Link2SD !!
Only way to move Apps to ExternalSD is using Link2SD for ICS / JB. I have done lot of research and there is no other way. However Link2SD does not move the data files and hence your internal memory will still be filled up as and when you install more apps but at slower rate.
If you want to install games like NFS-MW , Asphalt etc you have to use DirectoryBind tool to move the huge data files (More than 1.5 GB) to external card.
There is a nice tutorial how to use Link2SD here on the forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=919326).
You can use ext4 partition as i found ext2 and ext3 were not being recognized by Link2SD. Just a pointer.
PS: ICS and above no longer support moving apps to SD card. If i am wrong experts correct me.
root is your best bet. check this link, use the script and follow the directions. this script worked wonders. my tab thinks i have 32 gb internal and 4gb sd.

Vodafone Smart tab 2 (Lenovo A2107A) - Swap SD

I couldnt find a dedicate thread for Vodafone Smart tab 2. So I guess I ll post this here maybe will help some people.
This tablet is basicaly a Lenovo A2107 (A2107A_A404_010_002_120913_VODA)
- with single sim slot ( call feature restricted - only data enabled) and 4gb storage (1.8 gb user available)
For root - you can use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2044496
User isyrider managed to install recovery and pemergency rom unlocking the calling feature also.
I was looking for a way to swap the internal storage with the sd card so I could get more space if posible without installing a custom rom to avoid incompatibility issues that could appear. Directory bind can help with big game files like gameloft but those 2 gb are still not too much . I was unable to install N.O.V.A 3 because it requires 1.81 gb free on sd.
Anyway long story short . To swap internal memory with SD card you need to have root and replace your VOLD.FSTAB file from system/etc with the one I attached.
You need to have root .
Use any root explorer.
Unzip attachment
Rename your VOLD.FSTAB to VOLD.FSTAB.BAK
Copy my VOLD.FSTAB to system/etc
Reboot.
Check in settings, You will see your sd card listed as internal memory.
This combined with link2sd app will give you plenty of space to install anything .
Hope this helps .
Hi icrazy, I've tried this procedure but unfortunately, I wasn't able to copy your 'vold.fstab' to the directory 'system/etc'. I've rooted my unit before I did this. Now the unit cannot detect SD card. I cannot rename/copy/move any file on this directory. please help... How to restore it, Thank you in advance
Hello, I don't understand what happen. If you were not able to copy my vold.fstab what did you change ? I ask this because you must have done something if now is not working.
Anyway it looks like is a problem with your file explorer , make sure it has read /write rights for system files.
Can you please share some light on isyrider? what is that? where can we find it? Google search didn't seem to help me with this
Is there any way in unlocking the phone feature without installing a different ROM? The last time i did that, with another lenovo tablet, i lost my 3g capabilities , and honestly i don't want to repeat that thing allover again.
Thank you icrazy, working perfectly
I have now 2x Vodafone Smart Tab II 7" with 4 GB and 8 GB storage on internal memory
Hi i managed to use the vold.fstab and replace the internal memory with the sdcard but my problem wasnt solved because the tablet also has another partition 503mb of internal storage and when i install any app will install the apps data on that internal storage even if i have sdcard or internal memory as default write disk so after a couple of apps i have the out of space issue because the internal storage is full is there any way to swap the internal storage 503mb ( not the internal memory 1.85gb) with the internal memory or even with the sdcard this is really stupid why have only 503mb of internal storage if the apps save keep saving data on that partition
Regards

You can't unless you root the tablet and use non standard software.

Really...... I was under the impression that it could not be done at all.
Please tell how as I would like to know also.
Thanks.
.
didnt figure this out but u can use titanium and move those on the device to leave more space for other installations.
If you are rooted and on a stock ROM or ROM not using JB 4.2 (Google changed the file structure again in JB 4.2), you may be abe to use zedomax's script that swaps the internal and external SD cards. Although it's long, I would suggest reading through the entire thread as glitches with the stock ROM update to JB 4.1.2 and work arounds are addressed later in the thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1857391&page=1
I'm interested in this as well. I read a post on something called a directory bind...??? I guess that moves app data to the SD card. I currently have just over 9 gig of space left to fill (16gig model). Just put in a class 10 32gb card in last night to find out that app2sd does not work...
I read today that link2sd might work. Haven't gotten a chance to try it yet though.

I tried link2sd and the other one mentioned in this thread with no luck.
I don't really want to do the the card swap method.
So........... if anyone has another way to store apps on a mico sdhc card that truly works, I'm in.
Found app that truly works
I finally found an app that truly transfers your app data to your "extSdCard" but you do need to have root.
The app is called "Directoryblind" and can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410262 and the most current file is DirectoryBind_0.2.0o.apk
The app has been out since 12-2011 with many updates since its release.
So I'm posting it on this Note 10.1 section as I have never seen it talked about in this section and I thought it may help someone else find this app.
Again it truly does work.

[Q] Unlocking and Rooting

Hello,
I am from India and I just happened to read this thread. I have a few questions and I appreciate If you could answer them.
I purchased a new nexus 5 32 GB. Now, I am afraid to do rooting as it could void my warranty.
I would like to know how to install apps to the external storage. Since Nexus 5 comes without an sd card(sealed sd card). How do I access this sd card, becuase If I install any app. It just installs(currently, it tells 350mb and 26 GB free). Now, is this telling me that 350 MB is being used on sd card.
Secondly, where can I check the amount of RAM being used ?
Regards,
Avi
If you don't want to root, don't. As for your other question, I don't understand... There is no external storage. Unless you get an otg like meneevo but you can't install apps to that. Everything runs off the internal. 32 GB should be more than enough unless you install like 1000 apps...

Here's an excellent thread about the N5's storage.
Some more info please
Hello,
Thanks for the reply. But I still have some doubts.
If I install any app from play store, By default, where it will install, in the internal 32 GB Memory or on the 2GB RAM ?
Because, my intention is that whatever apps I install, It should by default install in the 32GB internal storage and not on the 2GB RAM. How to do this ? If any screenshot helps, please let me know.
Regards,
Avi
they are installed in 32 gb not ram lololololo.....

Apps will only install on the phones memory and never the RAM. RAM means how many apps you can have open on the phone at one time (multitask). For example you can have Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Browser, etc all open at one time without the phone crashing or running sluggish. RAM is basically the towing capacity of a pick up truck.
The phone memory is basically a car trunk filled with groceries (data, pictures, videos, apps, etc). The larger the car trunk, the more groceries you can put in it before you run out of storage and have to put it in the back seat/front seat (external SD or OTG).
In short, you have 32gb and all your apps will be downloaded ONLY to the 32gb.

Hello,
If it is that all the apps will be downloaded to 32 GB internal memory, then why would anybody use link2sd apps, because the main intention is that nothing goes to phone memory(2 GB) and all of them goes to 32gb internal memory. I believe that link2sd apps is probably not for nexus 5 phone at all and only for other smart phones.
One thing, I would like to tell is that I downloaded the link2sd app(hoping that this could increase the phone performance). Here, when I launch the app, for few apps, it tells that the app can be moved and tells that symbolic link is not found ? Does this make all sense what I am saying ?
What is your take on this ?

Link2sd is not for our phone. Its for phones that support external SD. We have internal SD and no external SD (micro SD slot)! Delete Link2sd and enjoy your phone. Don't worry about storage space. You should have more than enough storage space unless you download a lot of songs, movies etc. I have over 200 songs on my phone and I have a lot of storage left! I have the 32gb model also.

Unlocking and Rooting
Hello,
Thanks for all the reply. All my answers are answered pretty well.
What I understand is unlocking and rooting is required only when custom roms and link2sd need to be installed, As far as Nexus 5 is concerned, would unlocking and rooting help as already I am running kitkat 4.4 latest build.
Also, I have some queries related to apps, would you mind If I post it here or I should create a different post.
Regards,
Avi
You cannot use link2sd as there's no sd slot so no, root will not help.

There is much more than link2sd which requires root, link2sd is used on phones with almost very less internal memory so no use on nexus 5..….if u are newbie just keep ur phone stock and read and carefully understand about rooting and unlocking from xda and later you can try them
