[GUIDE] A Newbie Guide for your Galaxy S Advance! - Galaxy S Advance I9070 General

Hello there, to whoever will read this thread.
I am CallMeVentus (you call just call me Ventus ) and I'm here to provide a newbie guide for this device
First off:
What is Android? Is it a coffee maker?
No, silly! Android is an Operating System (OS) optimised for mobile phones, just like iOS (iPhone), Symbian (Nokia) and Windows Phone (Microsoft). It is based off the Linux OS, from computers.
However, what's different from it is that it's one of the most customisable OSes. You can find more info here.
I've heard that Android devices can be rooted. What is the "root" you speak of?
Alright, newbie. Here's a description taken from Wikipedia:
"Android rooting is the process of allowing users of smartphones, tablets, and other devices running the Android mobile operating system to attain privileged control (known as "root access") within Android's subsystem. Rooting is often performed with the goal of overcoming limitations that carriers and hardware manufacturers put on some devices, resulting in the ability to alter or replace system applications and settings, run specialized apps that require administrator-level permissions, or perform other operations that are otherwise inaccessible to a normal Android user. Rooting is analogous to jailbreaking devices running the Apple iOS operating system. On Android, rooting can also facilitate the complete removal and replacement of the device's operating system, usually with a more recent release of its current operating system."
More info can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rooting_(Android_OS)
Hmm....that seems decent. But what I'm wanting to know is the device specifications. Can you help me on that?
Sure thing. The Galaxy S Advance has:
- A 1Ghz dual-core NovaThor U8500 processor (which is a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9)
- A Mali-400MP graphics processor (the single-cored version unfortunately )
- 768MB of RAM (though the Samsung Task Manager shows it as 555MB)
- 2GB ROM (a.k.a system ROM)
- 8/16GB storage (internal memory)
- Bluetooth v3.0 with A2DP and HS
- HSPA connection of up to 14.4Mbps download and 5.76Mbps upload
- Android v2.3.6 (update to Jelly Bean coming on January)
- 5MP back camera (records videos at [email protected]), 1.3MP front-facing camera
- Supports Adobe Flash (HELL YES)
- Comes with the Touchwiz v4 interface (well....let's just say that the launcher sucks)
- 4-inch SUPER AMOLED touchscreen (Just the nice size and good screen)
- 1500mAh Lithium-Ion battery (the battery is kind of a drawback lol)
- NFC support (I9070P only)
Oh yes, by the way.....does this phone have a recovery or a fastboot?
Yes, we do. DOWNLOAD MOOOOOOOOOODE and RECOVERY MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODE
Download Mode is usually the flashing method that can save a phone's life from bricks. It's basically the one that allows your phone to correct its mistakes that YOU made to it. To access it:
- Turn the phone off (or remove its battery) and don't place it on a charger (yet).
- Hold the Power + Home + Volume DOWN button together to get into a warning screen
- Don't bother reading that crap, just press the Up button to continue
- TADA DOWNLOAD MOOOOOOOOOOOOODE
Recovery Mode is where you fix all your Android-level errors, or flash a new custom ROM! There's no way of getting to it once your phone is bricked. To access it:
- Turn the phone off (or remove its battery) and don't place it on a charger (yet).
- Hold the Power + Home + Volume UP button
- TADA RECOVERY MOOOOOOOOOOOODE
- For stock recovery/ClockworkMod Recovery users, use the volume buttons to navigate and press the Home button to select.
- For TWRP, use the touchscreen to do everything.
Oh no, I installed something wrong on my phone and now it refuses to boot. What should I do?
Don't worry, it depends on what type of "refusing to boot" stage that you're stuck in.
Boot animation shown (not repeating entire sequence), but been less than 5-7 minutes: Usually, when you install a new ROM, the Dalvik-cache, along with the normal cache, will be wiped. Upon boot, Android will rebuild the Dalvik-cache, which causes boot time to be significantly longer. This is most apparent in slow phones, but we have a decent phone so rebuilding the Dalvik-cache shouldn't take too long.
Boot animation repeating entire sequence: There may be something wrong with the system libs and you should recheck if it's suitable for your phone. Otherwise, try a factory reset with a system wipe before installing the ROM.
Stuck at splash screen (Samsung Galaxy S Advance GT-I9070 or Gt-I9070P): This indicates a soft brick, which may be due to a bad kernel, or an incompatible one. This requires an Odin flash using the button combo to get to Downlod Mode.
Blank screen when turning on/Phone not turning on: Either it's a hard brick (which requires a USB Jig to fix), or your phone just simply ran outta juice.
Yeah.....that's about it.
You can go ahead and ask more questions here. I'll answer them and they might even be reflected in the OP

Can we use this on s advance i9070.

With some modification, yes.

I read on google that floating touch first introdused in sony xperia sola so how can it work on galaxy s plus
Does this floating touch is based on hardware of screen or it will work on any capacitive screen. I read that it needs a mutual capacitance and self capacitance screen, does our s advance have both types of screens

Does it means that s plus have both mutual capacitance & self capacitance touchscreen.
Does it require root, ?i think no.
Does the s advance too have two types of touch screen- mutual and self( i didn't find this on google.)

Howto
Hey guys.My friend has bought a Galaxy S Advance and he has told me to root his phone and i have decided that i will also flash a custom ROM for him. Can someone direct me:
1. to the Root method and
2. a custom recovery(preferably TWRP)
3. Custom ROM i guess JetMod is the best and do you have any ICS or JB ROMs?
Thanks!!!

Plz someone tell that where is the rest of the ram is going, s advance have 768mb of ram and taskmanager and other apps like benchmarks apps shows ram to be 555mb. Plz clear this confusion. This is not only the case with s advance the s3 also have 1gb ram byt it shows only 883mb or something like that

that RAM is used by the android OS itself and all the system applications. it is not listed in the task manager because thats the amount of RAM needed for android to function properly.

OK, now that there are a few safe methods to root the GT-I9070P, how do we remove bloatware? What bloatware is safe to remove? Ideally I would like to remove all the T-Mobile and Samsung ware (especially the T-Mobile splash screen) and some of the Google ware such as Play Books.

HELLO GUYS
I compiled CM7 from newest sources and I would want to see if it works like AOSP
I've not done any tweaking as of yet because I don't know what will work for the R .
Features:
- Theme Chooser (freedom to install any CM7 theme)
- Ability to take Screenshots directly from Power Menu
- Extended power menu
- Allows rebooting normally , to recovery and even bootloader (not applicable)
Anyway , I need a kind soul to take screenshots (you will be credited)

Prealpha Release 1:
- Built from sources as at 21/3/2012
- Does not boot due to problem with the TARGET_ARCH_VARIANT_FPU
Preapha Release 2:
- Changed TARGET_ARCH_VARIANT_FPU
- Still not booting
Prealpha Release 3:
- Built by FranzJesus
- Removed ARMv7 errata patch
- Booting
No boot, freeze on splash screen
Sorry I cannot provide a logcatfile because my sgr won't turn on when usb/charger is plugged. (Once I see the splash screen and release power button booting process stops immediately and returns to charging screen. No such problems on stock though)
m.kochan10, is there any ways to flash other rom after it? if your SGR not "bricked" I'll try to flash CM7 too.
Of course, u can easily enter recovery and flash rom / restore backup in a regular way. It's not a problem at all.
It's just no way to provide a logcat file. To do it u must try to boot your system while connected to usb and this seems impossible here.

Can you try to replace the boot.img in my CM7 with the AOSP's boot.img ?
Herpderp Defy.
EDIT2: Replacing kernel with the one from last AOSP didn't make any difference....actually it did one, namely: Booting process stops on a splash screen but then phone boots into recovery mode automatically by itself.

I just replaced the boot.img from the AOSP release 2 with the one on cm7 and flashed it.
after reboot, it shows the splash screen and then goes back to CWM recovery...
EDIT : Same result when tried with the boot image from release 1.

Would you be kind enough to donate one or money to them ??
If not, nonconstructive comments best kept to oneself.
We are very fortunate to have a forum after much debate and even more fortunate to have kind devs doing this for next to nothing.
Please choose your words carefully in the future.
Cheers !
If there is real interest from a dev and enough of us can donate a small amount, it wouldn't be such a bad idea.

How did you know EmoBoiix3 doesn't have a R ?
I know he has access(he doesn't use it personally though) to one but for his own valid reasons he can't use it for testing.
I assume you have a R, you should to try to cook some custom ROMs forget CM7 to get an idea how many aspirins they might have to take to get one ROM working correctly.
Don't you think its selfless of them to make ROMs for a device which they themselves don't use/have ?
About the time taken kindly don't ask for ETA's on this forum, it will be stated by the dev themselves when it'll be released.
I don't think statements like these add anything to the forum.

Well unless m.kochan10 can
Defy-ing all limits.
I've tried....but it seems like there's simply no way to switch on your device (after you've flashed rom) while you're connected to PC via usb.
1)I switch off the phone and immediately get charging screen (no animation, just a battery pic)
2)Open cmd,
a) type: adb logcat > logfile.txt ,
b) immediately get information - "waiting for device"
3) Press power button until I see splash screen
4)Once I release the power button booting process stops and charging screen appears instead.
No problems with entering both DM and RM. Such problem doesn't exist on stock. I've no idea how to bypass it.
It definitely is a boot.img problem then.....damn this is **** lol

thread priority boost script[beta test]

my new performance tuning script, check it out!!
What's the concept?
-it boosts thread priority per process to gain extra performance.(hopefully)
How do i install?
-download the attachment
-find a way to launch it on any interactive terminal(you're on your own)
-type install
recommended applications:
download busybox from stericsonhere
download smanager here.
How to check if it works?
-type in whatever it says in the installer after you've installed.
-if it responds with error, then you've got problem.
it failed to run, what do i do now?(deeeebuuuuuugiiiiiiing)
-type in 'skeleton(or whatever you renamed it as) --verbose'
this will debug the program and show the result of what is going on.
if necessary, you can also try 'skeleton --bbpass --supass --verbose --renice 19'.
-paste the outcome here. i will help you.
How to run?
-run the program
-read the description.
hidden feature:
-'fork mediaserv 900 0.1 19'
will stop the stutters on audio.
-'randtest'
will cause havok to your device.
details will be updated in a distant future.

Little Tip: Update your OP.
"Find the flashable zips in thread" > well as this is a new Thread, nobody will ever find + Attachments are flashable lol
Make a Clear Structure, use your reserved second post
Write down the Features, Advantages, and How-to modify it with own values (even if u already did, you can still make clearer )
Make a clear Title:
[SCRIPT][TWEAKS](12/31/2012)
-=Lazerdroid & MP8Engine=- Gaming & UI Boost or whatever
Write down an easy How-To Use and Test for Not-so-Advanced (I won't call them n00bs ^*>) (Update your old tutorial)
Instead "Yo No Press Thanks" (which is actually pretty true) just "Please Press Thanks and rate 5* if you downloaded anything". Be thankfull... Thank You too!"
Don't just write CAPITAL LETTERS & USE ONLY 1-2 "!"
Only Recomnendations, I don't force you to anything.
Great Tweak btw
Thank You,
Jan
For not so Advanced users ( ) just flash the 2 zip files or anything else needs to be done?

If you want to disable that read ahead tweak(lazerdroid script)
you should erase all the 'tune your settings here' lines. It will permanently disable every sdcard tweak the script has.

* sim card slot (no more 2g/3g data)..no signal whatsoever
* sd card slot damaged, not completely dead
* camera engine is messed
Therefor: I quit developing/updating the roms I have ported/made so far. Everyone (including other MTK porters, and everyone else who could use my roms) is allowed to take my rom, modify it, re-upload it (if you edited it ofcourse) and all other stuff you wish to throw at the roms. The roms that are not suitable for daily use will not be uploaded! This is so I can take my time to work on them, without people asking for bugfixes or anything. Also, if you want to mod or port my rom to your device; please ask first!
Here's what you need to do to install any of these roms:
Install CWM recovery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=39293790&postcount=2
Place the rom.zip on external SD card
Wipe data/cache/dalvik
Install rom
press thanks
As always, let the Rom settle for about 48 hours. Don't expect the rom to be at best when you just flashed it.
If you encounter a problem with my roms, I'm happy to help. But please, be specific with the problem you have: what did you do (the steps you took untill the problem occured),what rom, all the stuff that might help.
Disclaimer
Ok I put it here because I have to. Upon flashing my rom on your phone, or doing anything root related with your phone; you have void your warranty!
I am not responsible if you brick your device, but I will help as much as possible to get your device in working order.

I haven't made the 'Rom' available for download yet. I'm testing if I can make a flashable zip first.
If that works, I will make a zipped rom, that's easier to install, and it's more...well then it looks more like a rom isn't it?
subscribe to the thread, I'll upload it shortly!

Great News!
Better Camara and Batt is priority for this moment, for me is important too better Manager of Storage Memory and SD Card, anyway great job. For my conclusion i have Dual SIM and batt working the same for one SIM or two. I dont use games, but phone and apps working smooth. Great GPS (30 sec with Maps), Sound :good: and i need little more option in Setting (like in CM) for example wakeup phone with Volume Button
How do you mean better memory management? As in, more free memory, or faster app loading and such? I've put in a few tweaks for that too, i might make a list. As for screenshots, ill make some in a moment and upload it

Cwm is really hard to do. I'm not a developer at all. Also this is an mtk phone, not very popular in dev land bacause there are so many phones for it. Your best bet is to ask CM directly at this point.

[DISCONTINUED] ROM Max Blue for ZTE V967S v2

DISCONTINUED.
DISCLAIMER:
Rooting your phone and using custom Recoveries and ROMS have risks and may result in bricking your device, and has nothing to do with Google or the device manufacturers. In case of any mishap I am not responsible if you brick/ruin your phone in any way.
Basic computer skills are required and minimal knowledges about phones and phones utilities too.
Make sure that whatever you do, you are doing it at your own responsibility.
Max Blue is a port ROM from Amoi N850 stock.
Update 12.02.2014 INFO
- changed the based ROM to Amoi N850, much better than previous
- beautiful theme, cool look
- fast, smooth, stable (FSS)
- everything optimized: deodexed, init.d support, zipaligned, etc.
For first boot you have to be patient, because the ROM is deodexed and that cause a longer boot than a stock ROM.
* I worked for this since last december and if you see a bump in version is because I didn't share all intermediate builds, which wasn't that good to share.
You can see some screenshots in SCREENSHOTS SECTION.
First release 28.11.2013 INFO
- various fixes: screen colors and depth, GPS (new fix), network, tethering, sounds, callerID matching, and some others.
- fixed computer connection as USB Mass storage in any windows (no ZTE drivers needed).
- optimizations for ram, kernel, cache.
- speed and smoothness.
- some UI improvements.
- possibility to use 3G in both SIMs.
- dual call buttons.
- for GPS all needed files are included.
- rooted with koush's superuser app.
- all apps necessary added (like mobile uncle).
- for adblocker, the hosts file is properly configurated.
You can see some screenshots in SCREENSHOTS SECTION.
Gapps are included essential, and if you want all suite just flash "Gapps to complete zip".
INSTALL INSTRUCTION:
To flash a new ROM properly, you need one of my recoveries (for these I'm sure they works).
1. Reboot to recovery.
2. Do a nandroid backup or backup in cwm.
3. mount USB Mass Storage and delete from sdcard these three directories:
.android_secure
Android
LOSTDIR
4. Copy ROM zip or zips on sdcard
5. Eject mass storage from computer and then unmount in recovery
6. wipe all/factory reset or pre-flash wipe in recovery
7. wipe or erase dalvik cache
8. flash zip from sdcard, choose ROM zip, flash it and reboot, or if you flash my ROM version 3.3, the phone will reboot itself.
That's all, this is the correct way to flash any new ROM in any phone thru recovery.
QUICK GPS FIX:
If you want to quick fix gps, do all steps from this post, without downloading MobileUncle - is already installed in ROM.
For downloads check post #3.

* pas2001 for battery icons

But, this is a demo of your hard work.

Thank carliv, that is again a very nice addon...
It looked very promising, especially functional lock screen. However I've found the following issues:
The play icon in the app/widget drawer is inactive
The dialer is not capable of Smart Dialing.
The dialer does not support lower DPI properly
Keyboard is shifted to the left. Max Inception works much better here
The colored arrows in the call-log are no-longer clickable. But this is the case in any MAX rom I've tested.
Attached screens with 160 dpi, to exaggerate the problems a bit.

I guess I have to make a video to show you that none of these are manifesting in my phone, except smart-dialer problem, which is inherited from ported ROM.
I don't know how you get those problems, but the attached images look like you have a different phone, not ZTE V967S.
The phone from what I used the ROM to port has same specifications: 540x960 res and 240 dpi.

I am just reporting the issues I observe - and I have v967s for sure
I prefer to use 220 or 200 dpi, as it utilizes the screen estate more efficiently.

No, you report problems created by yourself. If you apply special settings, then you have to make your own ROM, something that suits you. What I did is for a regular user, who wants just a good ROM. So, probably my ROMs are not for you. Sorry.

I agree with you Carliv. I have installed this ROM, I installl all the ROMs that you build (you know I am a flashmaniac) and until now I haven't discovered any fault. Of course I use 240 dpi, which is the most suitable for our phone. Thank you

Don't get it as an attack on yourself, I did not mean it that way... I find your hard work amazing and impossible to overrate. There are a few things I would have done differently, but as long as I don't publish my work for free, I don't really have right to criticize
What I wanted to show is that in MAX Inception 1.4 the phone application behaved well and scaled properly (like a well written applications should do) to the dpi settings. MAX Blue, MAX Inception 1.6, MAX Flavour 4.1 - they all seem to share the same phone application problem.
BTW. ZTE v967s has exactly 220dpi of screen density (960x540 @ 5"). 240dpi would be perfect, if the resolution was 1024x576 at 5"...

I didn't take it as an attack, it's just a waste of time and space. You are talking about peculiar situations, that interest only you, and this is a thread for general discussions about this ROM. I already told you, make your own ROM and stop posting nonsense. It's very simple. As you said I share all these for free, and nobody force you to use them. So, why all this criticism about things that only you are doing different than everybody else? Chill out, and go find something that will please you, or do it by yourself.

Max Blue updated to version 2.
Improved, better style, better behavior, fast, smooth, stable. Optimized and clean.
This is final update, a last gift for ZTE V967S owners. I don't have this phone anymore.
Enjoy!

Bugs when running, only 2 buttons show up on the nav bar. And they don't do anything. All they do is scroll down. Doesn't go home or go back. Everything so far runs perfect. Will look more into it later..
yeah i keep them buttons off anyways lol...i cant fix that unless i reverse engineer and edit the binaries ...that wont be nice as philz has his messages turned off n i would need his permission for that n he is a busy guy do i dont bother him with lil hiccups like that lol...but apart from that i havnt met any glitches

This is a qualcomm device
Ask in an MTK forum or your device forum
qualcomm and mtk don't port nicely
and porting recovery is not for newbies unfortunetely
you need to build android, then learn how to get recovery working from source
