I noticed yesterday that my mt4g (stock, not rooted, with ota update) was warm and had dropped >10% battery in 30 minutes or so.
I loaded watchdog lite and didn't see any runaway processes or anything. However, my battery still seemed to be draining faster than usual and the phone seemed a bit laggy.
Today I was more curious so I fiddled with watchdogs settings and enabled monitoring phone processes. As soon as I.did this I got a notification about a process taking over 55% CPU. I opened up watchdog and saw that init process was using between 50-89% CPU.
I did a quick search of Google and xda and found some reports of similar issues with other android devices, namely this xda thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8966211&postcount=1
I turned on usb debugging as recommended and init has yet to set off watchdog again today. Phone seems snappier and battery seems a bit better so far.
Just thought id share if any other mt4g users are experiencing mysterious battery usage/lag, its worth turning on usb debugging to see if it helps - can't hurt imo.

cool thanks for the info. i just did that for my phone so i will see if i noticed a difference in my battery life and performance
Hi Werk, glad to see my thread is helping you guys too..
Although it was my thread, thanks must go to Topcat who stumbled across this fix.
Im very confident that the /INIT process wont return, out of the 25 thousand + viewers only one has reported that the /INIT process has returned after restarting there phone, where a quick uncheck/check of USB Debugging has solved the issue again.
Personally I've not had the problem for sometime now and don't expect it to come back..
Regards Rick.

I've had that issue with all my android phones it seems - Cliq, N1, Vibrant, MT4G and a G2 I had for only 2-3 days.
I have always kept usb debugging on, my battery life is good. 36 hours now and I'm down to 28 %. Mostly standby though. Going to run it down for full charge.
Well, after a full run-down of the battery yesterday and a recharge overnight, I'm off the charger for 8.5hrs so far today with heavy browsing, email, and Logmein usage and battery is at 65%. Very, very happy I stumbled across rixsta's post and Topcat's information. This is like a totally different phone now.
Thanks for the info werk. Charging my empty battery and just turned on USB debugging. Let's see how my battery life goes. It barely last 12 hours for me.

Thanks. I turned on debugging yesterday around 1030. Normally when I go to bed around 2300 my phone is on its last leg or dead and I don't even touch it unless I have to, so that I can plug it in on my night stand when I go to bed. Last night around 2200 it still had a lot more battery than it usually does at that time... probably 10-15% more.
Also, thanks for mentioning watchdog, I snagged it off the market. Great app. bye bye ATK!
I'm still trying to figure out why my battery on the MT4G is so poor. This is my 3rd Android phone in 2 years. I always have considered the battery life on my G1 and MT3G to be fantastic. I do the normal battery conditioning to begin with, phones are all setup fairly identical, and yet I can barely leave work at 430pm without having to run for my charger. Yesterday I turned on debugging (which was always turned on with the G1 and 3G) and it didn't work.
Even with set-cpu profiles setup my battery life Is not so great
Anyone have any updates on this issue that they would like to share?
I noticed that when I turn on usb debug, Windows 7 has trouble finding the drivers for the phone.
What do you guys consider "good" battery life? The phone lasts me through the day with moderate usage. I'm not on it 24/7 (because, you know, I have a life), but I do use it for texting, light browsing, Facebook, some games, music, etc, and I always have battery life to spare before going to bed. I charge my phone every night while I sleep. Are people expecting the phone to last several days without being charged?

Just because you have profiles setup doesn't mean a thing. It's what those settings are that make a difference.
I have been consistently getting 36 hours of moderate to heavy use from my MT4G. My screens have documented that.
See here for a good example.
Check here for mystery battery drain on the MT4G that I found:

My MT4G now last about 2 days on a single charge with normal use. Which is comparable to my old 2G iPhone.
Hello I am new to this forum, I just got the Samsung galaxy s 4g this Wednesday and I was wondering if anyone else was having battery issues. Right now I have my phone set to minimum brightness, auto sync off, black bckground and juice defender on. So I don't understand why am I getting only about 3 hours of battery life when all I'm doing most of the time is surfing the web(this forum) and facebook. I even get better battery life from my dads vibrant which is completely stock, has auto sync on, no juice defender, and screen brightness set to 50%. From reading the stats of both phones, the vibrant 4g is supposed to have a slightly better battery. I also don't understand why if the screen is at the minimum it still takes up 94% of the battery whereas on my dads vibrant 50% screen brightness takes up 30%. Is there anything I can do? Will wiping the battery stats help? If so how do I do that from a stock unrooted vibrant?

Check your notifications settings. I know that Samsung's contacts integration with social networks takes a big toll on the battery, hence why I've disabled it. Also, disable T-Mobile's Contact Backup Sync, just use Google's contacts integration.
Thanks for helping, but yeah I have those disabled already.

Does the trick to fully discharge and recharge 3 times work with these batteries? According the the Li-on technology this is not supposed to be necessary but I've heard stories in the forums of folks getting great battery life on other phones after doing this. Many people also say their batteries work a lot better after a week of use (supposedly after "training" them as well.)
I believe the G2 is clocked down for this reason. You could try CPU-set app, clocking down to 500-800mhz when not gaming.
Anyone tried these tricks?

Im having the same issue with battery life.. for me its a deal breaker.. I use my phone pretty heavily for keeping up with email and a little web browsing as well as talking quite a bit.. My iPhone 3Gs lasted me all day of heavy use and with the SGS4G I have to charge the damn thing at least once a day with light usage and if I have to be on the phone a lot then its twice a day.. Not acceptable at all...
Thats with wifi and gps disabled..
On the 3Gs I had wifi, bluetooth and the gps running all the damn time...
Took my phone off charge at 6:30 this morning haven't put it on charge yet at 88% never had this much juice with the nexus one.

I'm not having any issues with battery life or heating. I use wifi teather most of the day and I'm getting to use it all day without issue. I did cycle my battery 4 times already just in case it matters. FYI
The batteries that our phone uses DOES NOT require u to cycle the battery. In fact, doing so will harm your battery. To avoid damage to your battery always charge ur phone when u r at <15% battery level. Trust me I thought the same until I did the research. I will post more info when I get on my PC later.

I just bought a Galaxy S 4G on wednesday. First android device coming from iphone 3G. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to preserve the battery life.
I took it off the charger at 6:30am and the battery was at about 2% at 8:30pm.
I haven't rooted the phone yet to remove some of the bloatware that comes pre-installed.
I've got email accounts synching, brightness set at about 10% w/ a static wallpaper. Played about an hour of angrybirds throughout the day and didn't really do any web browsing with a few phones calls. I mean 14 hours is decent but from what I've read there are plenty of people getting a full day of use and still have 50% battery left.
I guess once the battery fully charges I'll put inception on, turn off syncing and try a few other things.
So I guess I said all that to say this, my battery life isn't great but it's not downright horrible either. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
And yes I'll continue browsing all the forums to see what else I can find.
Edit:
Played through half of Inception in airplane mode, brightness at minimum. I dropped from 93% to 80% in an hour and a half. Not too shabby.
Also created a shortcut to toggle between 4G modes and Edge. I know 4G is going to be a pretty big drain so I'll see how much that helps.
I'll keep tweaking it.
this is completely true and if you read the manual on page 13- h t t p:// downloadcenter . samsung . com/content/UM/201102/20110224044646930/T959_Galaxy_S_4G_English_User_Manual.pdf it says that
"• Do not wait until your battery is completely depleted before charging
your device. Repeating this process of a complete discharge and
recharge can over time reduce the storage capacity of any battery."
right now my phone is at 23% battery level with up time of 46:46:40 hrs/mins/secs. with skype calling (around 10 minutes), text messaging, browsing the net (for around 5 minutes about 6 times a day), and talking on the phone (around 15 minutes)
the settings i did:
1. took a picture with my finger blocking the camera to get pitch black picture and set that as my background and deleted all the shortcut icons (i short, i only have a blank screen with the only 4 icons down below)
2. changed the brightness settings to 2 clicks to the right from 0% brightness (or you can lower your brightness all the way down during the night, and 2 clicks away during the day, this will save you more)
3. disabled haptic feedbacks and audible touchtones, selections, and screen lock sounds
4. disabled animations
5. disabled background data and syncing when not in use
6. disabled packet data (3g), wifi, and gps when not in use
the last two are the biggest settings that made my battery last longer.
7. i only charge my phone when it gets to 20% and the manual recommends not to use the phone while charging
i hope this helps.
and yes it is recommended to charge your battery to 100% before you turn on your phone for the first time and this is also stated on the manual.
one more thing, don't forget to set your browser's brightness setting as well

Battery life has been terrible, even sitting idle with the screen off it uses 1-2% battery in just 10-15 minutes.
Turned off bluetooth, gps and all syncing and it still drains battery just as fast.
About to factory reset to see if it helps....that is if I can get that far without it freezing and restarting itself.

It will get better guys just let the battery get conditioned. In the next couple charges it will start getting better. Don't panic you just got the phone, give it a few days.

Yup I left work at around 5pm with it charged 100% and by 9:30 I had hit yellow(20% -ish). To be fair I was using it quite a bit messing with settings and stuff, and its brand new.
My G2 battery would last forever, literally off the charger at 7:45am and by 3 or 4pm it would hit 60%. This phone is worth it though, IMO.
I also have serious battery issues. The battery usage is mostly consumed by cell standby and bluetooth. On my mytouch 4g at most these parameters were a few percent each. On the g2x they are like at 25% usage each. This does not appear to be normal. This is with minimal to no usage. I dont get it. Is it a software issue, there is no reason cell standby and bluetooth should be usaging so much juice with little to no use.

Purchased this morning and the battery was drained... Fully charged at 5:30pm. Now at 7:30pm im as 50% with minimal use. a 4-5 hour battery life is not going to cut it.
Hopefully this is just an initial charge issue, but my vibrant never drained this fast.

I have done a few charge cycles completely draining it and battery life is still pretty bad...it better get a lot better than this or it is going back.
Also getting random freezes and reboots.
I've got a ton of apps and widgets installed and use Exchange push. Battery life has been just a little worse than my G2. The phone froze after I first configured it and I had to do a hard reset and rebuild it. It runs a lot better after the reset. You might want to start-over and see if it make any difference for your freezes and resets. I'm purely guessing it may be the difference between the phone configuring the SD card and reading off of one that's already configured.
Bad batt. 4 hrs is a wayyyyy bad.

Sounds like my experience too. My battery yesterday lasted me no more than 7 hours. Wooh, I was pissed. So far today though, It's been on for 14 hours and I'm only down to 25% with some medium-to-heavy emailing and texting, and a few 5 minute phone calls. I'm very impressed after this second charge. I'll drain it again tonight in hopes for a little additional life. Stick it out for another day or two, OP.

Root your phone, after that install Titanium Backup from the market, and once you load titanium backup, you can actually go to Backup/Restore and find the app that you want to freeze, click on it and choose Freeze.
Once you install Titanium Backup - it will ask you for root rights - click on "yes" or "allow" (dont remember exactly which one it was" so you can provide root rights for it.
Anybody know of documentation on best way to calibrate the battery? I did 1 discharge - charge cycle... how many more do I need to do? Do they need to be back to back or can I keep it plugged in while using it today?

My battery lasts a little less than my NS or vibrant. It should at least give you 5-6 hours of HEAVY usage. I left the house yesterday at 10 and by 6 it was done. Since it's a new unit I used it heavy, plus I rely on it for scheduling and contacting clients about every 30-60min. I was also playing games on my breaks.
You probably have a bad battery.

I do seriously think that there are a lot of improvements that will come in a software update. The Cell and Wifi usage are ludicrous and it's probably a matter of getting the phone out the door with an update to follow.
This is only the second Tegra 2 phone to be released in the US.
2nd day with the G2X and the battery life isn't getting any better... If anything it's getting worse...
90% at noon and 20% at 2:40pm. Plugged in at 2:40 and now 20 minues later im back at 88%
Drains way too fast, and seems to charge even faster...
This phone is faster is every way compared to my vibrant, I just wish this wasn't true for the battery loss..
I've seen a couple threads praising their s4s for how long the battery life and in one case how much it flatlines while it's idle.
Since I've had mine , I've noticed the opposite. Using it very casually throughout the day with some light texting it'll drain probably about 30-40% while doing very little of anything.
But the part that stands out the most is when my s4 is idle overnight , it'll drop about 17-20% while others have reported seeing very little loss.
Has anyone else expierenced poor battery life? Is this normal for my s4 to do?
The only features I have turned on are; Wifi, Sound, Mobile Data, and Sync.

You said you have sync enabled, how many different accounts or apps are syncing and how often? If you have 4-5 accounts syncing every 15 minutes, your phone will never sleep and you will see massive drain

One of the problems I had when updating to my new S4 was the memory card. Going from the S3 to the S4 was not good. The S4 didnt like the memory card and was causing high Gallery cpu/battery usage. Reformating the card fixed that problem.
Now, my Galaxy S4 has the best life of any Android I have ever had. At the end of the day, it still has 40% battery remaining with an screen on time of around 4 hours.

I think you're aiming in the right direction here. That was one of my guesses was that sync is draining it fast.
Just checked what i had under accounts. The only ones that were syncing were Google (toggled off a few of the features i don't use so i only sync what i do use, drive , calender etc)
The only other one that was on was Samsung account which i just toggled off as well since I don't have any need for that to be synced up whatsoever.
The only other apps I can think of that actively try to sync are my gmail and facebook. I'm not sure how to view the frequency for gmail to sync, but facebook is set up to check every hour.

Yeah I have more accounts than that and I see 4+ he's of screen time a day with 30-40 percent left at the end of the day. I would try formating your sd card as stated above as that is also a known problem

Not I personally. My buddy his wouldn't charge past 46% no matter what. Not even with new battery or after a factory reset.
I tho notice better battery life with this phone then on my s3.

I don't have a sd card inserted
Here is mine on little usage. About a good 2-3 hours of screentime, everything turned on, max brightness, and live wallpaper...
I also had a 64GB MicroSD from my Galaxy S II that I did not format.
From the screenshot, the MediaServer is from the live wallpaper, and Maps -> almost every location setting in maps setting is checked... which will change soon... :good:
FWIW, GSMArena did a new battery test for the i9505 after the recent OTA update:

Overall, it saw a slight improvement.

Doesn't google now always tell you how far you are from home regardless of gps being on?

Seems you have a run away app that is sucking your battery. If you are rooted, check out Better Battery Stats on xda. I get at most ~2% in an hour but normally its not even 1%.

Is there a free app that is good for checking out the stats. Looks like the Better Barry Stats is paid.
Yea just checked bbs and it showed that any smart screen feature turned on caused wakelocks 7 hours straight while I was sleeping. disabled and Now I barely get battery drain and my phone goes into deep sleep. Sucks cuz I liked using smart screen features.
I'm getting itty good results I think? Formatted memory card installed.
How does this stack up against your guys

Its paid in Play store, but if you find the xda thread (search on google: "better battery stats xda") there is a version available there. If you like it support the dev

Look on XDA, its free.
Also after the OTA update my battery life is about 2x worse. Before I would lose 1% overnight and now i lose about 3%. Before I could get 4hrs screen on time with 20hrs standby, and now I am at 35% with 10 hours standby and 2hrs 6min on screen on.
Going to factory reset tonight.
I have only slightly better battery life than my rooted inspire 4g with a 1230 mah battery....
I cant WAIT for the custom roms and developers tweaking these phones...there is soo much potential for this device!
