There's this response here for the Evo

But I'm curious whether the Xoom with its larger screen size could be used as a monitor - hdmi in (say for a htpc or just to use a debug screen for a server without a real monitor near-by).
Im digging this up because i cant find an answer anywhere else.

I wish it functioned as a second monitor for my Netbook. I have an app on my iPad called AirDisplay which works fine.

There's this app but the reviews state its pretty awful
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.idisplay.virtualscreen&hl=en
Thanks. I was reading the reviews and they are pretty awful. I'm going to wait for a competitor because I plan on buying a new Netbook so I can get into theming with Android. This would come in super handy on a 10 inch netbook screen!
Too bad Apple gets all the good apps. Thankfully I have have both.
splashtop HD works GREAT when you want to connect to your desktop/laptop, you can stream video + games with no problem.

That's not what we're looking for. That looks like a remote desktop app rather then something that will act as a second monitor.
Thanks though.
Since I attached the dock I now feel like its a under powered over priced netbook, Is this what it really is?

1st, sorry for my poor Eng, i'm not an Eng speaker.
Then why don't you just buy a Windows netbook and forget about the tablet?
Do your netbook have the touchscreen? And if it have, can it work smoothly like on android device?
Can you just take your netbook's LCD out and rotate it portrait to read?
All about here is about a tablet with a keyboard docking station not a netbook which you can't take the LCD out.
One more thing, you can just forget about the dock if you just want to use it as a tablet.
To OP,
seriously if you really think that then you have totally missed the point of the device. Its so much more that an overpriced underpowered netbook.
this post smells of troll.
sorry.
Technically the CPU and GPU is faster than that of a netbook with longer battery life as well.

do netbooks have an ips display that's at least as good as the ipad screen?
I don't own a netbook, but I have used a few of them before, and none of them have a comparable battery life and performance. Flash even runs better on the transformer than some of the netbooks i've used before.
Also, android is much better than windows
im assuming that OP is trolling but .....
I bought a tablet - an Android tablet with a great spec.
However a tablet on its own isnt really enough for day to day use. Thats where the keyboard fits in.
Its not a case that the transformer is 'just' an overpriced netbook its more a case that for the money you are getting an 'iPad' AND a 'netbook' all rolled into one.
Then add in ... Kindle, iPod, Media viewer and its a great 'all in one' ......
That was my logic anyway ....

Well stated wilbur-force. Pretty close to my thinking also. Docked TFs, to me, are an "extra benefit". I bought primarily for the eclectic uses of a "tablet". Portability formost. And the opportunity to learn a new OS..android. Admittedly, am looking forward to getting one of the projected desktop docks though.

yep - ill be keeping an eye out for when the desktop docks appear.
Long train journey yesterday. Used my TF dockless to watch a movie and play a little RoboDefense and then the keyboard was snapped on to write a speech for a Junior football presentation while listening to music. Dropboxed the doc to my home PC and the missus had it printed off for me by the time i got home plus i was using my HTC Desire as a wifi hotspot to browse the web PLUS the TF was charging my phone at the same time ...... its a great piece of kit !
A $200 dollar netbook won't get you the same performance.

I am on the fence on whether to buy this tablet or keep my recently acquired galaxy tab (woot deal). So, I appreciate the different perspectives. I can then decide whether the posts are valid to me and if not I'm certainly not going to criticize the individual for sharing insight.
For the record, I'm not flaming you but ask yourself "Why read the OP's post if it is going to be upsetting to you?".

Is a 200 dollar netbook more "usable" ? If you could tell me what a 200 dollar windows powered netbook could do better than the transformer, i'd gladly discuss with you the merits of your assertion. Let me start with two thing thats it can't do: video encoding, and playing select pc games. I would never try to convert video on a crappy netbook as it would take forever, nor would i try to play any worthwhile game on a netbook especially a 200 dollar one with integrated graphics and 10 inch screen. Your turn!

To each their own. For my daily use this tablet is great, the keyboard dock allows me to actually use it as a produtivity device and not just for entertainment. I travel frequently for work, with this I can leave my laptop at home 90% of the time. As to the comment about it being under powered I have to disagree, it has more than enough power to run Android like a champ. I was listening to a podcast in the browser and jumping between Touchdown, Pulse and multiple browser tabs, pretty much exactly what I use my laptop for most of the time and it never skipped a beat. Sure it would be on the underpowered side if you installed an OS like Windows, but that's why you're not running Windows on it. I've been with Android since the beginning (have an old beat up G1 to prove it) so I already have a pretty significant investment in the Marketplace, because of that and Android tablet just makes sense for me.

You do know you can remove the tablet from the dock, right?
I have an Infinity already but fell for all the Windows 8 hype and picked up a Vivo RT today. It was $599 and right now Asus is shipping free keyboard docks with registration so it's cheaper than the Infinity until the 30 of Nov.
Pluses:
Netflix is usable out of the box. No stutter. Better interface. Just plain better.
Can browse and play off SMB shares right out of the box. All my windows shares are visible and playable from the desktop file explorer. I was able to play MP4 and AVI files off my NAS just fine with no extra software using only the included Windows Video Player.
My DLNA server is also visable right out of the box. No software needed to be installed and I was able to play my media off it.
Comes with Office. Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. Official Microsoft apps and not a third party app that messes up formatting.
Carried over my desktop Windows 8 account and all the settings. Just entered the same account and pass as my desktop and all my Calendars and email were there. Google email and calendars.
Comes with a dock connector to USB adapter. To plug in peripherals. Keyboards, thumb drives, mice...
Negatives:
No MKV playback right now. There is no app to play mkv files on the Windows market on Nov 1. When i tried to play from the smb share it asked me to look for an app to play the file on the market. When I tried to play it from my DLNA server (Serviio) is started copying the file. I might be able to set the DLNA server to transcode for the device.
Have to wait for dock to ship. No keyboard dock out the door.
Different dock connector than TF700. It's a different size and it's actually in a different spot. So no point in trying the TF700 dock.
I can answer questions if anyone has any.

How many usable apps in the Windows store?

I bought at my local computer store. They had 2 in stock when I check first thing this morning and one had already sold by the time I got there.
The only app I've installed so far is netflix and teamviewer. Both were usuable, No youtube or Rdio app in the store but they run fine in the broswer. So far IE is the only browser available.
It's IE 10 and so far it's actually very usable and quick. All the interface disappears when you load a page and you pull down from the top to get tabs and bottom to get the address bar. Youtube is actually as fast as on my desktop. No stutter or crashing. I tried Ustream as well to watch the twit.tv live stream and that works fine as well.
The headphone jack is on the top right side just above the volume rocker. Left side has micro hdmi and microsd card slot. Power is on top. The plastic on the back has a texture to it. It's not rubberized but if you're holding it with your two pointer fingers on the back it acts as a friction surface so it doesn't slide. The metal parts feel a lot like the tf700 but it has 2 speakers on the back instead of one. Feels solid. No plastic creaking.

Since you mentioned SMB I'm assuming your content is on a PC or Windows Server somewhere. PlayOn will playback MKV files in a browser. You'd have to install PlayOn server wherever your files are located. Then, in the browser, go to "m.playon.tv" and it'll find the server with your content on it. The server will transcode the video. It works using the Android browser set to desktop (20GB MKV file) so I'm guessing it'll work with IE on RT. PlayOn's not free but it might be worth a shot since there's nothing currently out there.

IE 10 is actually whitelisting flash on sites. My Serviio server has a browser as well. I just tried it and you can browse to the file and see the thumbnail but then it asks you to install flash.
Edit: Just did a quick search and found a post on xda for the Surface: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33447933 to white list custom sites. I'll have to try that.
2nd Edit: I did as the site said and now i can view the mkv's on my tablet for the time being. The server is transcoding them though. I can hear the fan's whirling up as we speak. It's an easy process. Just have to edit an xml file.
3rd Edit: Added live.twit.tv and now that site works as well. Very impressed so far.
OP don't you mean VivoTab RT?
I personally would have waited for the VivoTab (non RT) to launch. That one will run on better hardware (intel and not crappy ARM), and will run a real version of Windows 8 and not one that's completely incompatible.

All of that is true. I'm just hoping that the App store takes off and we get all the best apps. An Atom Vivo would be nice as long as Intel can keep the power down and the battery life up.
If the x86 windows tablets have active cooling and 4 hour battery life I'll be happy with this RT because right now all i'm doing is watching media, checking email, and working on my Excel files for work.
Is there some form of photoshop available on the market?

I have my doubts about RT from an app perspective. I actually think metro may be ok for tablets(not all touch), but unless it proves out as the standard for windows app on all form factors, devs are not going to jump on it and apps will remain scarce. Full screen IM clients may be ok on 7/10 in tabs, but on a 15/17+ screen it is the most retarded waste of desktop space i've ever seen. Some apps fit metro, a lot don't.
That said I would have no interest in an atom based tab. Atom is terrible across thd board. I'm curious to try an I5/I7 based win8 tab, but they gotta prove battery life to weight equation or get a better solution from intel.

Also can't seem to find hard info on when the atom version will hit the market and such.

I can confirm that I signed up for the free dock. You just have to register the tablet with the serial number and send a picture of your invoice and the serial number. If it takes two months for the dock to show up i would rather just pay for the thing.

I also went to Micro Center yesterday and picked one up. I really like it. It doesn't seem to have any out of box defects aside from the bezel on one corner being a few hair's width separated from the aluminum back, but it's a very solid device that's very thin, the OS is very snappy, the ecosystem isn't as bad as people make it out to be.
I chose this over the Surface because this was thinner and, well, free keyboard dock.
I'm looking for your thoughts/opinions after using him/her for a week or so. What is your primary use for the Surface Pro? Worth it? Or have you returned it? Plan to stick with it? Or jump ship when the next superhotawesome drops?
Got the Rt for my Daughter and finally the Pro for myself was waiting for what seemed like forever. I'm very satisfied with it, it's perfect for what I do I'm self employed and blends all my devices into one convenient package. It's that sweet spot and I'm sure I will have it for a long time.

I have the Surface pro and I love it,It has complete replaced my i7 laptop.it has plenty of Storage space ism not san why everyone was complaining of course the os requires Storage what type of idiot would expect it not to eat into the available Storage.
Interface
The new interface Was design for touch after a week of usage I could not imagine using win 7 on this device. MS did a great Job when designing the interface.
handwriting recognition
no os available Oat there has better handwriting recognition in comparison to windows8. My handwriting could be in Chicken scratch but somehow handwrite recognition gets it right every time
Stability
Overall the device is Stable I only had to reboot once, because chrome does not play Well on surface. Everything else runs like a Champ.
you Cannot compare the Surface pro to any android or iPad. Both are Just cool toys in comparison, the Surface Pro is a true productivity tool.
Battery Life
Have you used a Lenovo. The t 410 battery life is terrible in comparison. I get more than 4 hours on my Surface Pro. Microsoft tried to be too honest with specs.
I have not had problems with battery life. I charge it once a day. I am enjoying using it so far. I have had a couple of issues with legacy software that I need for work not running with the scaling, so i choose to disable that on the particular app and then it runs.
I even dropped the sucker from pretty high up and nothing happened (I know, I feel stupid). I find myself really reaching for the screen, so much easier than using a mouse. I really wish more software was optimized for that. Firefox needs an update that would let me use it with my fingers (I don't mean in modern UI, I mean desktop mode).
Overall, I am really satisfied. It's a powerful machine and it's been a lot of fun setting it up.
I have had a 128 Pro since launch day. I have an RT as well (well, I should say my wife has it) and we are bot very happy with the Surface.
I have a 64gb pro (Couldn't find the 128) and bought the 128 off of MS. Going to keep this one and return it later when I get my 128. I am quite happy with it. Although it is weird to adjust to the touch keyboard. I couldn't handle the type. It was nice, but too thick and weird when folded back. Overall, it runs like a champ. 5 sec boot. 3 sec shut down. 6+ hours when just using onenote mostly. I love it. Now, it would replace my laptop if I could just get my hands on the 128. Soon. The only thing I'm disappointed in is Chrome support for Windows 8 and touch screens. It's pretty crappy to be honest.
I've had mine for almost a week now - still getting used to it.
I have the 128 GB version - replacing my old 2 year old Alienware M11x R1 (relegated now to my daughter for her school PC) - quite simply - the SP is what I was originally looking for when I bought the M11x..
I run Office, various browsers, many other apps, as well as code on it.. doesn't miss a beat. Averages around 5-6+ hours on a single "typical" charge doing standard "productive" (which you cannot do on an Android/iPad tablet) by my estimates - less if you watch a lot of youtube/streaming videos.
Make no mistake - this *IS* a PC wrapped in a tablet format. To that end - it has some quirks in trying to accommodate both form factors - and it's very unapologetic in the way it attempts to stay the course between these 2 very different form factors. To be clear - *you* must adapt to it..
That being said - my 2 cents - it's lighter and much more portable than an ultrabook, and much more useful than the typical "consumer" driven tablets of Android/iOS...
Combine the 2 (again it doesn't give you a choice.. ) - you have a very unique experience that you'll either immediately fall in love with - or hate.. I'll be the first to admit that it's not going to be a device for "everyone" - but I also believe that MS has a winner on their hands in the form of a truly productive, viable, and unique device that will ultimately be adopted much more widely in professional and enterprise environments than the "typical" consumer market - though I imagine it'll do quite well there as well - especially for students..
To answer your question - yes I'd recommend it and yes I'm keeping it..
I had the RT for 20 days and took it back for the pro.Would never recommend an RT for someone with similar wants and needs. I am so glad I did and the timing was perfect. It is what I wanted in a tablet/laptop.
Still waiting here in the UK.... :/
I've got an RT and once the Pro is out I'll get one, then the one I dont like will go to the tech here at work...
I have had the 128 for 6 days. So far, I am using it as a replacement for the HP envy15. I was already using windows 8 on a desktop, but windows 8 on a tablet is cool. The device gets a little warm, as I use it all day, but so far its great. You cant beat having access to legacy apps on a tablet. I cant wait for the app market to grow.
Love my pro
The 128 was never in stock but I have a 64 gb micro sd for storage.
This unit replaced my iPad mini and Lenovo Yoga 13.
Even though I bought it from Staples I was still able to get Microsoft complete warranty on it. Best $149 you can spend, it includes accidental.

You'll need a USB to ethernet adaptor with plug and play functionality on linux (most branded ones work I think) and then start up the tablet with the adaptor plugged in and connected properly etc. I think ubuntu then normally prompts for driver installs which it will do via the ethernet.
Using USB WiFi adaptor. I asked over in Ubuntu irc and they said there's a bug with the Marvell drivers and a fix is being issued.

Picked up at 128gb pro on monday. The build quality is great, but it's just a bit heavy to use as a tablet. It's doable, but really it's better suited sitting on a desk with the stand. I was previously using a Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 2 but it was too slow to run certain programs needed for work (large excel sheets, MATLAB, Access, etc). The battery life is as advertise - I get around 5 hours with brightness at half. I thought I'd be able to stretch it to 6 hours but there really isn't much optimizing left to do so I haven't been able to. Compared to any arm based tablet, yea the battery life is weak but really it has the specs of a real laptop and compared to the MacBook Air 11" it has the same battery life with a better screen and weighs less so it's quite a nice machine imo. I didn't think I would need the digitizer and pen but I'm finding more ways to use it and it makes for a nice addition. I kind of wish Microsoft went with a 16:10 form factor though... 16:9 tablets are really just too narrow and awkward to be used in portrait mode when holding it like a tablet.
