Basically I am happy with the stock ROM but would like to get rid of the "fluff" that's there. Also want to theme I think. Anyway, What should I be looking for if I do the ROM? I am a 3 year past user of iPhone and had it jailbroke, so now I am reading and learning about Android.
The things that really matter to me are:
GPS applications
Photo Applications
Organization without the bloat
Any advice?

Clean Rom
Thanks everyone. Sounds like that would be a good one for me but I will do some research on it first though. A few questions though, on the iPhone JB's it is pretty much a one click affair with the addition of tweaking and daemon removals for speed and such. How does one mount the ROM, do I navigate to a folder and drag it in (PC) or? BTW I am doing the research on this.
Also, how do I tell whether I have twrp recovery or CMW?

It takes a while to read through all the steps, and don't forget the backup steps at the top before section 1.
Well for beginners you picked the right Device, and welcome to the good side.
Recoveries are kinda user preference. TWRP is touch screen / CWM is button operated. Both work good.
You know what recovery your on but the one you flash.
Do alot of reading and Enjoy !

Reading through this guide I think I understand that you must update SuperUser before proceeding. If that's true where in the app is there an option to do so? I sure don't see it playing with the menus.
Also get familiar with how to put your phone in download mode and use Odin to restore to stock just in case something should go wrong and turn your phone into a paperweight.

I am reading about Odin as we type. Lots to remember on Android. Wish there was a one click for all this...lol, but I will learn I suppose/hope. I like that the Clean Rom keeps the stock ROM for now. I think that will help me understand what a ROM accomplishes.

Its preety easy once you use it a few times. To restore just have the factory image. And choose it on the PDA option in Odin and flash away!!! No more annoying iTunes errors when trying to mess with a jail broken iPhone or when trying to downgrade it. I do miss many of the games though

One clicks are great until something goes wrong. And when something inevitabley does go wrong you are up a Creek without a paddle since you have no idea quite exactly what the one click did.
Look at droidstyles guide. That will teach you how to do essentially everything with this phone. Just make sure you always verify that anything you flash is for the USA gs3 Verizon.
Sent from my cm_tenderloin using xda premium
Do your reading and read everything twice! Make sure you unlock your bootloader, and verify that you only flash files for the Verizon version of the phone!
Rooting is similar in some ways to Jailbreaking, but gives you significant more control. Rooting is simple, but it is only the first step if you want to flash custom ROMs, kernels, themes, etc.
Once you flash a custom recovery (TWRP or CWM) and start flashing things through Recovery, you are doing way more than you ever did with Jailbreak.
I already have ROM manager on my phone. Today I ready about and installed Titanium Backup Pro. I've been getting rid of bloatware with it and doing back ups. Don't Rom Manager and Titanium Backup do essentially the same thing?
What do you do with "kernels" anyway?

Im guessing thats not the right way to remove ATT stock apps? lol I been browsing forums but can find nothing for HTC Inspire 4G
If your not to sure what you should or shouldn't delete, then the best thing for you would be to just flash a stock rooted rom. Like clearD, tcp, or dilligaf.
Titanium backup is the right way. Why don't you try twopumpchump optimized stock Rom in the development section. We're very helpful over there and will walk you through it. You can flash a ROM that already has the bloat removed.

As long as you have them saved on your sim no. Personal data yes. Apps not if you back them up. Make a nandroid back up before flashing. All you have to do is download the rom, place it on your sd card. Then boot into recovery install zip from sd card, choose zip from sd card, pick the rom select yes. You just flashed a rom.. As far as I know no one has completely bricked their inspire, even the people who have had corrupted boot loaders have been able to recover.

I will probably sit down this weekend try tweeking a few things, and hopefully get it to work with out boot looping. Makes me wish some one lived around here that could teach me a few things I am a visual learner. I will get one working though .

Your good intent aside, if you post your response with clear English then it may get a better response. I had trouble reading anything you said.
It only takes two seconds to use a spell checker and correct punctuation.
You might start with your signature.
With that said, I hate it when people don't say "thanks" when someone tries to help.

you say you are 'a advanced user' but you dont know what CWM is....you need to read up on the terminology used here.
you are likely to brick your device by not understanding what you are doing. this website isnt a 'make your device cool' site. its a learning tool for devs/hackers/enthusiasts to learn and share ideas and work. if you dont comprehend what you are doing, then you dont need to be hacking on your device.
Also xda can be entertainment i get alot of laughs reading some posts on here..... and that advances my good mood.

Guys as JRW 28 has said.
This has been tried and done with fatal issues. Until nytroglcerin33 gets the official CWM package updated, there is not much I would try with this, we have done backups and restores, as well as attempted a flash or two with NO SUCCESS.
I am not trying to be a pain here, but there are some of us who have been working on these things for almost two months since this phone came out, try a search in the Atrix2 section next time as there is a thread already about this, and until we get the bootloader unlocked we are going to have very limited abilities on this phone to develop, if you want to help out someplace go jump in there.

No worries, that was not aimed at anyone, it was more in genral, so that anyone who reads this sees that this is a very slippery slope right now, we have had at least 2 people that we know of, who bricked their phones using the / a similar method that was in the OP here.

I wouldn't say I have had no success... I'm able to backup and restore system and data using that atrix 2 recovery. In fact, the bionic one worked as well but I only used it a couple of times.
I've been using it to go back and forth between 55.11.16 and 55.13.16, 8 or 9 flashes so far without a brick.

I think we should have our moderator swoop in and sticky the important things. It seems were not getting much love from him around here. It's kind of an annoyance to me that topics fall back a page or two then are reintroduced as a new thread a week later. Just saying.

Depends on the root method. If this replaces the rom then yeah you will lose everything, but if you use this method:

then you will not have to change anything and it's pretty straight forward.

I had to do a factory reset on my phone yesterday to troubleshoot another issue, so I can't say 100% but the few changes I made earlier today (wallpaper, lock screen shortcuts, ringtones, installed Pandora) stayed in place. From the script, it just copies files over and then moves them to system partition during next couple boots. It does not wipe data / cache / dalvik like when you load a new ROM.
I don't know about the java tool here but the one Aquila mentioned ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1792342 ) works perfectly.
You won't lose settings or have to clear anything. Its really useful if you're on the VRALG1 firmwares and don't want to revert to LF2 from flashing a rooted ROM.
I downloaded to my pc, then hooked up my gs3 nothing? What an I suppose to do?
Never mind it worked

I'm going to go ahead and say it...
Adam posted this in the development thread where they are working on cracking the bootloader. If he wanted the masses to be using it or if it was ready for the masses to use he would have posted it outside of that thread.
I don't know if it was bc of this thread or not, but this got picked up by droid life and he had to take it down off the R&D thread.
Stuff like this shouldn't be reposted outside of that thread until it is ready and the dev who came up with it says it is ok to do so (or just posts it himself).

Hello,
Couldn't find any solution in the forum.
My friend accidentally deleted data folder on sd card on his HTC Incredible. Now his phone is not going to boot at all. Are there easy ways to resolve this?
I have a little experience in rooting, flashing roms on my Desire Z. But feeling a bit scary to perform this with another phone.
Would appreciate any help.
UPDATE : I asked him again, now I'm not sure what exactly he has deleted. He is far from IT person, and unlikely that he has rooted phone or made something like that, that is why I guessed that he just deleted something from sd card. Let me try to explain behaviour of the phone:
When the phone is starting to boot, it at first shows htc screen, then screens on the pictures, then phone just freezes.
Holding Volume Down button with Power button allows to see menu, but then trying to boot recovery or just boot makes same thing as above, Trying to make Factory reset just freezes phone on the menu window.
ANY GUESS WHAT IT MIGHT BE? OR WHAT IS THE BEST THING I CAN DO?
UPD2: My friend deleted some apps (processes with names starting com...) from All applications menu in Settings in HTC Sense.

If he has a recent Nandroid backup then he can just flash that and let it rebuild what it needs to. Otherwise you can S-Off and root his phone, then install a custom or stock ROM as you like.
You will find more help in the HTC Incredible or HTC Incredible S forums, depending on exactly what model phone your friend has.
I think deleting any folder on sd card never cause this type of serious problem...
Unless and unless you screw in system files or boot files of your device this happens..
And as we all know that all these critical files stored in device memory so deleting anything on memory card never do this..
Just inquire him he must screwed up something in root directory of device..
we all should be polite enough to press thanks for anyone who helped US.
maybe your friend deletes data folder in which is in the internal storage.
maybo you can access you phone after a full wipe.
My suggestion is to restore with a NANDROID or flash a ROM.

Just full wipe! The data partition doesn't affect the rom, because rom is in system partition. The only problems are mismatches of data. Full wipe to assure the system "knows about your forced data wipe".

just updated the post
Thanks for reply to everyone!
I've updated the post. You can find more details now. I cannot perform anything because I cannot boot anything.
Hope you can help, will wait for your kind replies before making any radical steps.
In that case, I would recommend flashing your kernel anew.
If it doesn't help, you could try to flash a stock firmware. If this didn't help, I would probably visit a repair shop.
Hope it helped, best of luck

Actually, this happened to me once before. Reflashing kernel worked for me: it restored my recovery.

As I wrote I cannot boot into recovery.
Can I flash kernel or rom using my laptop if the phone is not going to boot into recovery mode?
Repair shop is asking too much. I want to know could I do it by myself, with your help, of course.

Now that clarified it all. Of course you can flash it anew... Even in the worst situation your phone could be in, you can always flash kernels and firmwares!!!
Assuming the rooting process is same or simillar to Desire HD u could use hack ace tool to downgrade to stock rom, root and install cwm recovery.
After that you can flash any custom rom.
You can find a third party site link in this thread (marvin02's post):

In what way? or what link?

Thanks, Gantar.
But, your post would be a little more informative and useful if you you could explain how can I do that or give a link to this .

Excuse me? Did you check my post?
I just gave you a link to the thread and which user posted the link in that thread "to this".
Just go there, follow ALL,the instructions and you'll be flashing a fresh custom rom in no time.
EDIT: Ok since you seem not to have read my post, here's the direct link as posted by marvin02 in the thread:
Look here
Link found on attn1's twitter.
Upper link get's you directly to a guide and tool site. From then on,please read and follow all procedures step by step.
You need to clarify the model. Is it Incredible or Incredible S?
In case of Incredible S, look here:http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f475/medusa-box-flasher-v1-0-6-more-htc-via-usb-added-1469331/ Try in both cases, there's nothing you can lose!
You probably know this, but anyway...http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-incredible-faq/42039-how-hard-reset-htc-droid-incredible.html
Hope I helped you. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you

I'm not sure about this, bobix. The site explicitly mentions the supported devices and there's no Incredible...

Note: In fact, you don't need the debugging on. You need flash drivers instead! Kernels may be flashed even if you don't have debugging on! I write from experience
