[Q] not sure if to root or not. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

ok I have a few dumb questions I have been running stock ics non rooted since aug-sept my question is actually 4 ? 1. what real advantage would it be to root this as I am getting good battery now I think the longest I had is 1d 6hrs and 3hrs 30min on screen time on 1 charge. and 2. should I root to put this on or just odin the actual stock leak. 3. does anyone know if rpm is worth using? and 4. which recovery is better on these phones twrp or cwm. thank you. btw iam on he modem. I don't mind the bloat as I have more than enough space on phone plus I have a 16gb card that still has 14 gigs left. BTW not new to flashing I've rooted all my phones except this one.

No dumb questions there. I got my phone in September too
1) Rooting and unlocking is about so much more than just battery life. It allows you to customize your phone in so many ways.
2) It's really up to you if you want to root. I rooted and unlocked and everything, but then I went back to stock unrooted because stock touchwiz on the Galaxy S3 is pretty amazing. I found myself saying "well this isn't much different than stock, and stock is more stable!" I odin'd to the latest jelly bean leak and it was pretty sweet, but it has it's share of buggy things. I found 3 'bugs' within the first hour. So I odin'd back to latest official release and decided I'm just going to wait for Verizon to release the official. It may be a while but I can live with it.
3) I don't know what rpm is, never used it.
4) I've read so many people saying they prefer cwm over twrp so I always went with cwm. But I don't have to worry about that anymore since I've decided to stay stock.
Hope I helped

I'm rooted and unlocked on stock Rom. I root mostly to keep my phone ad free and make backups of apps etc.

There's many reasons to root, but its completely up to you, if you're happy with the stock look then go for it. To answer your questions
1. Rooting will allow you to do things such as flash different ROMs, backup apps and data, theme it n stuff like that. In reality there's really no advantage to rooting unless you are looking to do stuff like that. It'll just turn you into a crack flasher haha.
2. There's images out there that you can flash if you're rooted with something like CWM or do via ODIN. If done via CWM you will be rooted still after you flash it. But if done via ODIN through an untouched image, then it would be like getting an official update, so no root and completely stock.
3.rpm sometimes has shown to boost your battery life and sometimes wouldn't really see that much of a change. I always find it helps. Can't go wrong and typically , it does help evdn if just slightly.
4. And as for recovery programs, all up to you, they both work very well, but I like CWM. First one I used so I'm just used to it.

G2x 2.3.3 root question

Hi,
I dont know if am being really stupid or not but this is my first android device and first time rooting.( i have searched for hours now trying to find an answer)
So i am trying to root my Lg G2x running GB 2.3.3 using this link :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255214
so as of now i am on Step 2...what i dont get is when i click the link on step 2 it says to download ALL of these NVIDIA drivers and everything. All i did was downlooad the One Click CWM
Another thing this link does is send me to ANOTHER link saying that you have to ROOT first?
So from my previous knowledge i thought you could only "flash" the CWM if you were already root ( or maybe thats only for the ROMs)
alright then if thats the case...the directions of the original link just says to download and unzip...but do i put that root folder onto my phone(i read this from another link that someone else posted about)..The reason i am asking this question is because when i tried to go to Step 3 it said to Hold Volume and Power to boot CWM but nothing happened obivously bc 1. the directions say to plug the phone into computer at like step5 and 2. the files are on the computer
So in conclusion i guess i am just trying to make sure that i dont brick my phone by asking these lame questions
1. do i have to take those unzipped files and put them onto my Phone( more specifally, my sd card or phone?)
2. What about for the CWM download.. do i just download the One Click thing and ignore the other directions??
You have to do the one click thing first to install Clockwordmod with NVFlash.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
Then you boot into Clockwordmod Recovery and run my booting zip.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255214
In that thread just download the root zip and put it on your sd card or in the internal memory of your phone. Flash the CWM recovery and then boot into Clockworkmod Recovery by holding down volume down and power until fancy LG logo shows (about ten to fifteen seconds). Find the menu option to flash a zip from sd card or internal memory (wherever you put my rooting zip). Select it, flash it and reboot when finished.
Presto. Done. You are now rooted.
THANK YOU!!!
I GOT IT YAY i AM ROOTEd
i was just overreading and kept reading every word on the posts lol when all i had to do was follow the APX driver installation, FLASH the cWM , and then BOOT IT!!!
THANK YOU!!!!

Flashing CWM and rebooting does not root your phone. You have to flash the root zip also, or flash a rooted rom.
Ok i am completly lost trying to root my g2x. I'v tried downloading the flasher yet nothing. I just need a step by step on doing this. Thanks!!

The original thread for the one-click flasher in the development section is one of the best step by step posts ever made on XDA. It even has a link for a video tutorial. If you cannot follow that then I suggest you stop trying to root your phone. There is no reason for anyone to make another step by step guide. To find the thread try the search button. There are also links to it in numerous other threads.
Are their roms on here that are bug free and stable for daily drivers?
Im coming over here from a HD2 which is not a native android phone. And I didnt mind the bugs in android.
But now I have a g2x and it is bug free though I really wish it had 2.3.5 but oh well this phone is still bad ass.
So what im wondering if I should just root to keep it stock and do lil mods or flash the whole cwm Process so I have a back up. If I ever need it.
Thanks in advance.

I've kept mine stock for that reason, but I did root it. After experiencing custom roms on my Nexus One, A71 variant and others, I would have to say the frustrations stuff being perpetually broken, bugs and the monotony of daily flashing (CM7 just never stops) whatever small benefits the custom roms have (i.e., eye candy, additional settings, etc.) is just not worth the frustration and danger of soft-bricking the phone (I have hard bricked one also) to me. My Nexus One (gave one to wife when I got the G2X but then got another one at a steal) has gone through updates to 2.3.4 and 2.3.6 (yesterday). These updates seem to be mostly internal fixes for stuff. The average user (or even advanced) is not going to notice any difference in using the rom. The only exception to that is that in 2.3.4 Google removed the need to log back into your Gmail account(s) after changing sims. They said that was a minor benefit at a greater annoyance and the "feature" most complained about by world travelers. Other than that the Google apps get updated and even 2.2 devices are basically running the same Google apps as 2.3.X. So based on what you said above, I would suggest keeping it stock and simply rooting it. You definitely want to change recovery to Clockworkmod to make backups and the fact that going into stock recovery on this device does a factory reset (how stupid was that LG).

Thanks J you have been very helpful in my transition from hd2 to g2x"im still flashing hd2 I love playing with sense 3.0 and 3.5" But this phone is amazing. Ive rooted it and added cwm but have not flashed any cutom rome I like stability over newest features.
Is 2.3.3 the most recent update for our Phones?
Yes and we're darn lucky we have 2.3.3. No other 2X variant worldwide has received any update love from LG. They are all still on 2.2.x. Lawsuit in U.S. seems to be what forced LG into releasing the G2X GB update.

Hey J
If this is the wrong place to ask please pm me but, would you mind letting me know what tweaks you have done "if any" you have done to your stock rom?

[Q] Which ROM for a non-techie wife

My wife uses an Evo Shift and has essentially hated it from day one. We are still locked under contract for another 8 months or she would move to an iPhone (what I use). A major frustration of hers was battery life so I recently purchased some 1700mAh replacement batteries. These batteries have been performing well but in my investigation I learned that I should wipe the battery stats. Obviously to do that I need to root so the last few days I've been reading about rooting and the benefits.
As I've been reading about rooting I realize that I should probably install a new ROM to hopefully solve some of the other things she hates with her Shift (or Android). The biggest issue is that she still experiences the Sense home screen crash but she complains about everything from dropped calls, bluetooth not connecting, app crashes, slow performance and more. I don't know how much of her issues are Sprint vs. Evo Shift vs. software but at this point I figure trying something new couldn't hurt.
I don't want to lose some of the visual eye candy of Android and I do think she likes the interface of HTC Sense if only it would work properly. So rather than installing something like CyanogenMod which I believe is for power users and sacrifices some eye candy, what HTC Sense ROM would you recommend for a wife who is fed up with Android and just wants her phone to work in a reasonable fashion?
Thanks.
If she wants sense and better battery life I'd go with mikshift V2.0 and flash dodges or x99's kernel.

Honestly it sounds like she'd be happier on stock rooted sense. I have the latest stock sense rooted on rom manager. Obiously you need root to use rom manager to download any roms. I use x99percent's gingerbread kernel on it and it works great. Some of the other sense roms seem to have some bugs here and there, so if you want a bug free sense rom with root I'd go with stock rooted. Also the benifits of running a stock sense rom is you have the option to remove anything you don't use or want, like the bloat that comes with stock sense. When you remove some of the bloat or unwanted apps the phone seems to perform a little better. You can use something like titanium backup to remove unwanted apps.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm certainly new with Rooting and trying to freshen up on the language. A few questions. Does a stock sense rom essentially mean that I root but don't install any ROM and just use the HTC Sense that she already has on the phone?
Also, I am seeing mention of flashing the kernel which I thought I would stay away from. It just seemed scarier to me but I would be willing to give it a try if you think it is essential in getting performance. Is there any reason to be more concerned with flashing the kernel as opposed to rooting or a custom ROM or is it more a "once you start down the path to the dark side forever will it dominate your destiny?" kind of thing? In other words if you are going to go ahead and root don't half a$$ it and make sure you get the full experience?
Thanks.

Well first things first. You do not have to be Rooted to calibrate your battery. You can calibrate the battery without Root. Just follow the instructions HERE. There is also some good info in THIS article. You can run a Stock Sense Rom that is rooted. But how you achieve that depends on your starting point. If your currnetly on 2.3 Gingerbread, then your going to have to downgrade to root. Then flash a Stock Rooted version of 2.3. Your best bet would be x99 Stock Rooted GB if you want to stay completely Stock. But if you want something that is very close to Stock, with a bunch of extras, Uber Stable, and FAST. Then I would Flash MikShiftedG v2.0. The Rom has WiFi, and USB Tether enabled, which is just one of the great extras. Now if your on 2.2 Froyo, then all you have to do is Root. As to your last question about flashing a kernel. I would just root the device if that's the path you choose. Flash a Rom, if you go that route. Then just see how it performs before flashing a Kernel. I would also recomend doing a lot of reading, and ask questions if your unsure. Make sure your comfortable with the process, and what your going to do before doing anything.

Yeah but x99percent's is not the latest stock update it's android 2.3.3. The One I have on rom manager is 2.3.4 rooted stock I still use his kernel on it it's wonderfull, but it does not come with his kernel outta the box. The nice thing about a kernel is you can flash it and if you don't like it you can just reflash the rom no wipe or restore to a nandroid backup and you'll be back on the stock kernel pretty much like you said.
Hmmm, then he would be better off with the one you have. If he wants to stay closer to Stock.

I checked this morning and she is on 2.3.4. I'm not sure when it got updated. Do I still have the same options available as if she was just on 2.3.3? I like the idea of trying Mik Shifted 2.0. From a quick check I think I would be going with the Shift version that is 1.7.6, correct?
Wiping battery stats will not cause any increase in battery life. There's a great read out there that a google employee posted on their G+ page about this. Essentially the battery stats are just one file that stores the info you see in the battery usage info menu. It gets deleted each time you unplug your phone after a full charge anyway. Also, beware of cheap aftermarket batteries that claim a higher mAh capacity than the stock battery as often times they are lower quality cells and will not perform as well. Don't be fooled by low prices on ebay or otherwise, you get what you pay for with batteries.

No link is necessary, I've seen the thread. It appears that when you are on 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 essentially you are downgrading to 2.2 and then rooting, correct? I had wanted to use this Gui method for rooting. After I've gone down to 2.2 I should be able to use it, right? At that point it doesn't matter where you started since you are now effectively back to the Froyo bootloader and loading a custom Android version?

Yes you still have the option to flash Mik Shifted 2.0 and also 2.3.4 stock rooted once the phone is rooted. Both of these are available for root users.
Couple of questions. I've been reading this thread about rooting from 2.3.4 and it mentions says:
"0) A PRECAUTIONARY THING TO NOTE: YOU WILL BE ON BASEBAND 1.07 AND WIMAX 27167 AFTER ROOTING! YOU SHOULD FLASH 1.08.01.0111 AND WIMAX 27240 AFTER ROOTING. ALSO NOTE THAT BEFORE YOU FLASH THE RADIOS MAKE SURE YOU ARE STILL ON STOCK 2.2 TO AVOID BOOT CORRUPTION AND MORE WORK. AFTER FLASHING THE RADIOS YOU SHOULD REFLASH CLOCKWORK RECOVERY, WIPE CACHE, WIPE DALVIK, FORMAT /SYSTEM, WIPE DATA/FACTORY RESET AND REFLASH YOUR ROM OF CHOICE!"
So I started going over this thread about flashing the radio and wimax. This is all coming at me so fast and is quite intimidating. I want to root and start down this path but it seems that I'm now dealing with downgrading, rooting, flashing ROM, flashing baseband, flashing Wimax and it is all getting a little scary.
I also want to make sure my wife isn't without her phone for a day or two as I'm working through all of this and probably coming here with a bunch of questions. Is it really bad if I follow the root instructions and don't immediately flash the baseband and wimax? I can't even tell which steps go in which order right now. Any advice would be appreciated.
U should just go through the rooting process first! Forget about everything else, I.e. radio, wimax, etc... u can always do that later when ur more comfortable. One thing at a time, everyone here is very helpful so I wouldn't worry too much!

--EDIT--
Ignore this question, I got it working.
I created a new thread for this other question but thought I might as well post it here.
I can't seem to get the Windows driver installed for the Evo Shift. I uninstalled the USB Mass Storage drivers for the Android phone and the phone shows up in Device Manager with the Yellow triangle, but whenever I try and update its driver and point it to the USB Driver folder from the Android SDK it says that Windows could not find driver software for the device.
Any ideas here? I did try using ADB to check for devices and nothing shows up in the list.
Thanks for the help.
Yeah If I remember correctly there is not rooting method for the new update stock sense with android 2.3.4. you can downgrade to froyo and root from there but there is no rooting for 2.3.4 gingerbread. If you want to get back on sense 2.3.4 you have to downgrade first and then flash a custom 2.3.4 rooted rom like the one I have on rom manager!

Yes you still have the same options. The thread OP for MikShiftedG v2.0 has been updated. But it is MikShiftedG v2.0 for the Shift.

Correct wiping Battery Stats does not increase battery life. But it does give you a more accurate reading. I believe the information your referng to is THIS. You also have to keep in mind that he was was discussing the fact that it does not add battery life. Nothing was mentioned as to whether or not it improves the accuracy of the information displayed. Keep in mind that a lot of things change when you flash a New Rom.

Not sure I'm following you. If I go to this thread, it is clearly talking about MikShifted 1.76 and takes me to a download page where I can get 1.76. Is this different than the 2.0 you are discussing? I don't think it is since it mentions somewhere in that thread that 1.76 is for the Shift which is essentially the same as 2.0 for one of the other phones.
Follow the link I've attached below. It should take you right to where you need to be. You do not need the Tweaks update.

Thinking of rooting, questions

Hey guys! New and proud TF300T owner. I got it last Friday and am absolutely LOVING it so far. This will be my 8th android device of all time and I am starting to get that itch to root it. First and foremost, i'm on the .30 firmware. This is the newest version and it updated as soon as i turned it on. I'm hoping that won't be a problem.
My first question, should i root? I'm loving ICS and i haven't seen a LOT of different ROMs available in the thread. Since this is my first android Tablet i'm sort of asking myself, why should i root? The Pad is very, very fast. The OS is nearly perfect. So i'm wondering, besides the obvious "Because we can" answer, why did you root yours?
I saw this guide :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1706588
Do you guys think its the best way to go? Should i unlock w/Asus tool before i start this guide? Can anyone recommend a rom? I heard CM10 is coming to the 300 and i have always loved Cyan since my days with the G1.
So, in conclusion.
1. What do you, personally, feel are the advantages?
2. Is the guide above the SAFEST way to root? (DEFINITELY don't want a brick)
3. Unlock bootloader?
4. Roms?
5. If it ain't broke, don't fix it? Or - If it ain't root, lets break it? hehehe
Thanks in advance for your responses!!!
It all depends on you. I rooted mine and am using CM10 (Jellybean 4.1.1) and love it. Stock is actually pretty good though on this device, usually stock Android blows. I would think you would have to be dumb to brick your device at this stage, everything is pretty simple, and you have ways to getting back to stock with ease anyway.
This is what I did. I unlocked my boot loader using the tool from asus, I then flashed CMW from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1668173 , after booting into fast boot (power on, hold down vol, on the next screen you have three icons, select the middle one), and then flashed the root file. You have to put your ROMs you want to flash on the tablet memory, CMW doesn't support external memory yet.

Have fun!

I question for you? Now that you are running CM10 Jellybean, do you see any improvement with the I/O problem (very slow R/W) and what about flash player? Thanks

1. What do you, personally, feel are the advantages?
adjust settings, and run cmd's or scripts from cmd line
which can not be done without root
lots apps require root as well
2. Is the guide above the SAFEST way to root? (DEFINITELY don't want a brick)
yes the debugfs link you posted is the safest way to root, and it is drop dead easy
3. Unlock bootloader?
I did, and I don't regret
4. Roms?
hydro is based on stock and is smokin fast
night and day difference
5. If it ain't broke, don't fix it? Or - If it ain't root, lets break it? hehehe
if it aint root, let's break it!
I could not handle not having root
there's too many things I do that require it
Thanks for the great responses guys! Think i'll go ahead and get started...So,
1.Asus Unlock Tool
2. Root
3. TWRP flash, back up current rom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=D2ATyGP5JAk#!) using this guide
4. Flash rom!
5. Success!
Sound right?

sounds right, I do have 1 suggestion or maybe just a simplification
if you plan to use TWRP
download gooManager from the play store, it has an option that will install TWRP for you automatically
and also don't forget
step 3.5 go into TWRP and make a nandroid backup, and copy the backup to somewhere same
I doubt you'll have any issues, but better to have a backup
and not need it
than need a backup and not have it
Just my personal opinion ... unless you just have to have a custom ROM, forget unlocking and just root it. You won't violate your warranty and we're going to be getting jelly bean in a few months from Asus. This is exactly what I did running v30 and I'm loving it this way. Stock ROM isn't too bloated.

Yeah...I haven't taken the plunge yet. Its my day off and i love tinkering with stuff like this but i'm just having a hard time justifying unlocking/flashing on a device that already performs so well. Torn!

First answer, rooting isn't the same as unlocking and flashing! You can root without unlocking, like others have said there aren't that many ROMs out there and the stock is pretty good IMO.

Hey, I just unlocked my tf300-will I not be able to get jellybean at all when it comes out?!
You will have to flash the stock update through cwm or twrp, whichever recovery you used.

I havent unlocked yet but its my day off now and im thinking about doing it now. The only thing im worried about is i keep seeing people having issues like "soft brick after restore"...i mean whats that about? I have backed up/restored and flashed a million roms on all my other unlocked android devices over the years and have NEVER had a soft brick just doing a restart? I mean i suppose ive gotten a bad rom before that wouldnt boot but when that happens i just usually go back to recovery and restore what i had before. Also, it seems like TWRP has more issues then CWM at this point. Is that just me, or is that true ? What the advantage of TWRP then if that is the case? Sigh...I wanna unlock and flash it so bad! But i just can't bring myself to do it for some reason!

Phone is about to go THRU THE WINDOW

Ok so this is more of a rant than anything. This fumblin phucking phone is constantly rebooting on me, shutting programs while i am using them, freezing. BATTERY dies quick, phone gets hot when in use....
The only thing I have done to it was rooted it, using that one click program, very easy process (couple months ago.)
What can I do???, has any of you did something? This phone is stock. I used to have a Galaxy S CRAPtivate and I was a flashaholic (btw that phone was sh*t compared to this one even with the freezing) but I see MOTO wont unlock the phone so i was wondering does that mean I can't change roms like I did on my old phone? I also would like to know what bootload means because i have that installed too and dont know what that is? I am sorry for being a noob! and yes i did read the N00b section lol
Where did you find the bootload that you installed, I'd like to check that out. As far as the rebooting, have you tried a factory reset? And what size / class sdcard are you running?

-First, let's just calm down a little bit...
-Now, let's make sure you actually have an Atrix 2, not an Atrix 4G. What does Settings -> About Phone -> Model Number say?
-You installed "bootload?" I assume you mean "bootloader?" Where is the guide you followed to do this?
-Yes you can change ROMs with a locked bootloader, but you can't directly change modify the kernel. So it's hard to build any ROMs aside from derivative stuff (based off of stock Moto ROMs)
-What size/class microSD card do you use?
-Have you installed any apps/changed ANYTHING on your phone recently? Are you on GB 2.3.6 or 2.3.5?
If there is one thing I've learned since I'm back to stock waiting for the soak test to actually start is that stock sucks big time both in terms of battery life and overall stability (I've had a lot of stability issues with a lot of apps, even the stock music app(!) that I haven't experiemced in custom Roms)
I highly recommend installing a custom ROM. I've made pretty good experiences with ROMULUS (pretty much fantastic ROM) and Lithium.

Opps not bootload... I mean what is this Atrix 2 Bootstrap? I read over and over and I cannot find the definition of Bootstrap.... I was thinking it was like Clockwork and puts the phone into the boot screen? I never used it yet. The phone was reset to factory a few months ago, maybe I need to do it again? I have a 16gm memory card. I do have a atrix 2, I have both atrixs as a matter of fact, mb865. the only guides i used was the noob guide on here and i only rooted and installed this atrix 2 bootstrap. I have 2.6.35.7
i hate this friggin thing right now lol.. i will put a rom on it if that will fix this damn thing
I like to muti-task. I have ADD . this phone is not doing its job, I am starting to think no phone will. I HATE APPLE! I do not want a new phone lol. I want this to work! lol

The Atrix 2 Bootstrap .apk is the door opener to allow the flashing of CWM Custom Recovery on boot. You have to install the Bootstrap .apk, run it by clicking the first button, then the second. It will reboot your phone into recovery, where you can flash the CWM on boot Recovery found (use the ON BOOT WITH QORKING GPS on found in the forum here). If you're wanting to flash a custom rom, you will have to have these measures in place first, as this is the only way to install any rom. Please note that some roms are flashable .zips, and others are CWM backup images. Be sure you know what you are doing for each rom that you attempt to install. All of the necessary instructions will be listed in each thread for each of the roms available...
From the n00b's guide:
CWM is a custom recovery program that allows you to backup / restore a full or partial system backup of your device. It also allows you to install flashable .zip files; which is one of the primary installation methods for custom ROMs. It also provides other neat features such as cache wiping, battery reset, and other processes. Long story short, if you are thinking about flashing custom ROMs or just want a really good backup program, incase you FUBAR your device, you need to install this.
For Atrix 2 Bootstrap:
1. Install the RazrBootstrap.apk
2. Select "Bootstrap Recovery"
3. Superuser will prompt for permissions
4. Select "Reboot Recovery"
When the phone reboots it will boot up into Clockworkmod Recovery.
Again, to get the CWM ON BOOT WITH WORKING GPS look for it in this forum. Sorry, I'm being lazy and don't want to search for it myself...

Should I update my phone?

Hi, I have a Galaxy S2 LTE with Rogers - i727r (apparently it's called the Skyrocket in the USA) I really want to update it but I've been reading a lot of complaints about the ICS for this phone. Should I update or should I just root it? And if I should root it, which rom DOES NOT drain battery life and DOES NOT use up too much of my ram?
Thanks!
I have tried many roms... They are pros and cons to each and every one of them. But yet they are all outstanding. You probably don't wanna hear this, Flash a few and try them out. But you have to make the decision first to root...because without root, you're not flashing anything .
U don't actually have to root. Since Samsung was kind enough to leave the boot loader unlocked just flash a different recovery. U also have the added benefit with this method of no flash counter increase.
As for ics, I highly recommend skyics to get u started, and cm9 if ur feeling adventurous

you just need to install a custom recovery such as cwm or twrp, no root required.

Thanks for correcting me gentlemen ...I was still thinking HTC. I dunno why, I've been here since April (maybe old age ?)
