Google now for ICS based ROMs (tested on CyanogenMod 9.1 build#9)
The Thread
Requirements:
You must be on Ice Cream Sandwich.
Rooted Device
A deodexed ROM
You should be running a custom recovery like ClockWorkMod Recovery (CWM) or Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP).
You need at least 60MB of system space for the full offline installation. (30MB for online only version) If you don't know how to check, simply download Titanium Backup from the market. It tells you right on the main screen
Download :
Google Now Offline Version
Google Now Online Version
File descriptions:
Online only zip is for those of you who need to save /system space. It removes the offline voice files, so that offline voice dictation does not work. You must always have some sort of data connection for this type of zip.
Offline/Online zip is for those with no /system space restrictions. It contains the full Google Now package with offline voice dictation.
Update zip is for those who already have a version of GN installed. All it does is change your version to the one your choose without having to download a big file. If you are already on an Offline version, it will update you to the Offline version of whichever you choose. Same goes for Online versions and manual installations.
APK only is for those who have already flashed a zip. You may simply push the new apk to /system/app (overwrite or remove the previous version), set permissions to rw-r-r (0644) {ES file Explorer}, and reboot to enjoy the latest version of Google Now. DO NOT TRY TO INSTALL THE APK BY ITSELF.
How to Install:
Move the file you picked in your SD card.
Reboot your device into recovery.
Backup your current ROM.
In CWM, navigate to "Install zip from SD" and select that.
Next, highlight "Choose zip from SD card" and select it.
Select the Google Now zip you loaded onto your SD card, then select it.
Scroll down and select the option that says "Yes - Install Google Now....zip"
Once it has flashed, go back to the main CWM menu and select "Reboot system now".
Launch Google Now by opening your App Drawer and selecting the Google Icon, or by adding the Google Search Widget to your home screen, then doing a normal search.
Go into the settings menu for Google Now and set it up for your Google account and various other settings.
Manual Installation:

Post Installation :
So, you flashed Google Now. You're wondering what you can do with it, right? Well, thankfully, Killer-B has a handy little guide to get you up to speed on all the cool stuff Google Now can do as well as how to do it!
Commands & Now Cards For Google Now!!! Now Video, and custom widget
At this point, I'd suggest looking through your contact list for people with unusual, or difficult to pronounce names. Go into their contact card, and add in a nickname for them of their phonetically spelled name. Google Now has trouble parsing these unusual names, and their isn't a way to make it learn. Spelling the names like they sound allows you to send texts and place calls via Google Now without any voice issues.
Open up the red mic screen and "Do a barrel roll."
Restoring Google Search:
If, for some reason, you want to remove Google Now and return to how you were before, flash the following zip. It removes all Google Now files, and returns the original Google Search app and voice files, as well as sets permissions for the Search app. Make sure to uninstall talkback and then reinstall it once you reboot to get voice search working again.

If you have already installed your ROM and have been using it for a while, you may also try this more convenient way to move updated apps from /data/app to /system/app if you have Titanium Backup installed :

Thanks to Carig for providing the above procedure
-------------------------------------------
By the way. It's easy to make an update package by yourself!
Here are the steps that I used:
1. Download any gapps update pack
2. On your phone, update Google apps
3. Find your updated google apps' APK files in /data/app, copy & paste them onto your SD card
4. (optional) if you Want to immediately apply your update pack after making it, uninstall updates of all your updated Google apps from Market
5. copy updated APKs from your SD card to your computer
6. use any Zip file manager (e.g. 7-zip, a free one), open the old Google apps update package (the zip file)
7. Carefully re-name your downloaded APKs to the names in the update package (e.g. rename com.google.android.gm-1.apk -> Gmail.apk)
8. copy and paste your new APK files into the Zip archive
9. (optional) sign your package, using Zip Signer (freeware on Android Market) or using this tutorial:
http://www.londatiga.net/it/how-to-sign-apk-zip-files/
Thanks man, it's so useful to me everytime I flash a nightly : )
Thanks a lot!
Thanks very useful
thankyou very much
I would love to see a program which can work with exchange Group adress lists. That together with a nice email widget is moving me towards sense all the time.
Good Stuff! Thanks
what abt market?
If it's not already on /data, will this move it?
Prob a stupid question...
What if we already have GApps installed and we don't want to wipe?
Maps 4.7 is out.
Thanks guys, new pack is now up, including updated Maps, soundback and Terminal Emulator, rebased on CM's gapps-hdpi-20101114-signed.zip.
This update package will not automatically remove updates which you already done in Market, but it's easy to remove them. Just go to Market and "uninstall updates" to all your updated system apps.
I'm currently learning how to make update script, I hope I'll implement that feature later.
Thanks for your work, I'll keep an eye on this thread too

Now I'm on holiday so I'll give them a try I'm very new to Android development.
I had few problems with the Terminal Emulator, I can not simply replace AndroTerm.apk with newer version, it will force close if doing a clean installation (flash rom then immediately flash the update package)
I'll look into this problem....

How to get navigasion voice in your own language
1. Download Classic Text To Speech Engine from the marked.https://market.android.com/details?id=com.svox.classic&feature=search_result
2. After installation, open to select the language you want (USD 2.99) to download.
3. Go to Android Settings -> Voice Input & Output -> Text-to-Speech settings, activate SvoxClassic at the bottom of the screen, then select SvoxClassic as the Default Engine.
Notes:
- Google Navigation requires that the Text-to-Speech voice matches the phone language. You can change the phone language in Android Settings -> Language & keyboard -> Select language.

1) Download a working version of the hacked map, its corresponding original version and the latest map version.
2) Extract from all apks their classes.dex.
3) Disassemble the classes.dex (hack, original & new) using*baksmali . This will create a folder of disassembled files for each classes.dex, viz., hfolder, ofolder & nfolder respectively.
4) Use a diff tool such as meld (in ubuntu) to find the differences in hfolder & ofolder.
5) Port the diff (i.e., modified parts) in hfolder to nfolder. Please make sure that they are the same file when porting (i.e., most of the other codes should match).
6) If you realise that the hacked file does not corresponds to the new file (i.e., same file name or file does not exists in nfolder), look for some codes (in the hacked file) that can uniquely identify it and search in the folder, using tools such as grep or find.
7) Copy all files in brut folder to nfolder.
8) Edit the files in brut folder of nfolder such that the references (some function calls to the map classes) in them point to the correct classes/files in nfolder.
9) Once all modifications are ported, assemble it using*smali *which will create a dex file. Name it as classes.dex.
10) Replace the classes.dex of the new map apk with the newly assembled classes.dex.
11) Resign the apk.

Nice. Install was easy. no problem , works great but one question.
Brut Maps 4.6 worked offline with the custom tiles we created and stored on SD in folder brut.googlemaps etc.
How does this work now offline or isn't such thing an option on this version?

5.Login to facebook, choose sync settings. If everything worked properly you should get a facebook inside xperia message asking for permission options in notification bar.
6.Using root explorer, go to system/app and MOVE SEMCFacebookService.apk to sdcard. Reboot, then INSTALL the same SEMCFacebookService.apk from your sdcard. Reboot again. You might get another authorization notification but that's okay, everything should be working perfectly now.
Troubleshooting
1.If you don't get a prompt asking you to authorize Facebook inside Xperia, REMOVE your facebook sync and FIX sync. Then, relogin into facebook, choose sync options, it should come up.
2.Sharing apps MIGHT not work on new 2.3.4 Home launcher. It might work for you but it's no guarantee. It didn't work for me, but did wrok for others. One thing you can try if it isn't working is to UNINSTALL 2.3.4 launcher by deleting home.apk from system/app (MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ANOTHER LAUNCHER!) and reflash it!
3.If you get connection problems with media discovery, try fixing permissions using xrecovery
Have fun!

try that and it should work, there's no difference in our ROM's the only difference is mine is an X10a but that shouldn't matter.
Hey mate, nice work... But your flashable .zip file is builded without system carpet... so it will give error when trying to flash... so if you can fix it...

Warning: I am not responsible if I am not responsible if loading this rom hard bricks your tab. Install this at your own risk.
NOTE: This ROM is not compatible with Gary9d's Kernel
DO NOT INSTALL THIS ON T-Mobile's Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 plus
DO NOT INSTALL THIS ON GT-P6200
If you do install this on another device besides GT-P6210, you will soft brick your tab and I WILL NOT be able to help you out since I DO NOT have those devices.
I'm not sure if this will work on all the GT-P6210 from all regions since I don't have a samsung galaxy tab 7 plus from europe or any other place.
I am only sure that it will work on the American GT-P6210
Ok, so this is the first rom I have ever made so please be patient with me. If any of you more experienced developers see something wrong with this rom, please tell me so that I can fix it. The rom is based samsung's LA3 firmware.
Here are the rom features:
build.prop tweaks (improved touch screen response, enabled launcher hardware acceleration, experimental dalvik heapsize, possible battery saving tweaks, etc).
zip-aligned apps
removed bloatware (mostly samsung's apps such as their music player and store)
de-odexed
root (just install superuser from the market)(I don't take credit for this, Garyd9 is the one that got us root access for our device).
Go Launcher HD for tablet as default launcher (removed the crappy touchwiz-honeycomb launcher)
The rom is very basic right now, but I will be adding more features later on.
Installation instructions:
First you must have clockworkmod recovery installed. If you don't already have it installed go to this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1379532 and follow the instructions
I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO A BACKUP BEFORE IN CASE SOMETHING GOES WRONG WITH THE INSTALLATION.
Once you have clockworkmod recovery installed, download the omgbbqrom betav1.zip and put it on your device memory. Then boot into clockworkmod recovery and choose
-install zip from sdcard
then
-choose zip from sdcard (not choose zip from internal sdcard, because thats actually the external sd card)
then
look for "OMGBBQROM Final Release" and select it
then
It will ask your to confirm install, select "-yes - install OMGBBQROM BETA v1". Wait for it to install.
I also recommend wiping dalvik cache, battery stats and fixing permissions. But it is not completely necessary
After it has finished installing go back to the main menu and look for -wipe data/factory reset and select it and choose "-yes -- delete all user data". When its done wiping the data reboot your tablet and wait for it to start up.
It will take about 5 min to boot up. It will stay on the samsung screen for a while because it's organizing all the new files. The first boot may be a little laggy because the market will be restoring all the apps to your tab.
Change Log:
v1.0: Initial Release
v1.1: Modified dalvik heapsize and zip-aligned system folder for real now. Improved wifi and improved video and audio streaming
v2.0: Improved battery life with deeper sleep. Disabled dithering for better performance. Enabled Dalvik VM Just-In-Time Compiler.
OMGBBQROM BETA v1.0 OBSOLETE AND CRAPPY
OMGBBQROM BETA v1.1 Removed (this one was mostly for testing purposes)(Please download the final release)
OMGBBQROM Final Release Removed for now (Need to add some fixes)

Doesn't seem like he themed it much, so it should *almost* look identical to stock.

Yep, I didn't theme anything. I did try to change the font of the lockscreen clock to the roboto ice cream sandwich font but for some reason the hour part of the clock kept getting cut off. So for example the time was 8:30, then you would only see the right half of the number 8 lol. So for right now im leaving it with the stock honeycomb clock font. But I'll post a screenshot of that so you guys can see what I mean.
Roboto Font
Honeycomb Font
Sorry for bad quality of the images guys but atleast you can tell the difference between the two.
Sorry Guys but I removed v1.0, I wasn't really happy with it. But now im uploading v1.1 right now and maybe its just me but v1.1 feels much faster
Guess I'll wait for 1.1 before testing then

Great work! If I were you I would remove the Sim Tools, Phone, and Messaging APK's since our Tab is Wi-Fi only.
If it were my ROM I would also replace the stock Browser with Opera Mobile so we can have a real desktop experience, use ssLauncher instead ofGoLauncher, install Gesture Control to hide and show the Honeycomb Bar, install Loquendo TTS Susan instead of the stock robot voice, install the Toshiba Thrive Media Player and remove all others including Gallery, install Spare Parts and uncheck Compatibility Mode so any app can be fullscreen, install Supernote from Toshiba Thrive, install Swiftkey X for Tablets for the keyboard, Wi-Fi finder for wardriving, Zedge for notification tones, and TV.com, Play Movies, and Crackle for movies, and of course Tiny Flashlight and CameraZoom FX. Other than that it would be great if we could use Gary's kernel since it gives incredible battery life and NoLock so we don't have to deal with a lock screen, and GrooveIP so we can make calls via Google Voice on Wi-Fi.
Other than that it's rad.

Thanks for the feedback. The point of this rom is for it to be the lightest as possible so that means having the least apps as possible and letting the people install their own apps. Also I don't think I can put swiftkey x for tablets in because it would be illegal to put in a paid app in the rom. However I will ask for permission to put gesture control into this rom. I'll see if I can remove the simcard tools, phone and messaging apk and still make it boot.

Requirements:
Follow the simple instructions here.
You must be on Ice Cream Sandwich.
You MUST be rooted
You must be on a deodexed ROM. If you aren't sure, ask your chef.
You should be running a custom recovery like ClockWorkMod Recovery (CWM) or Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP). I use CWM, so this guide is based on that.
Your device must be using ARMv6 or v7 CPU architecture. If you aren't sure what that is, check this thread.
You must have a file explorer that has root permissions. I use ES File Explorer, so this guide is based on that.
You need at least 60MB of system space for the full offline installation. (30MB for online only version) If you don't know how to check, simply download Titanium Backup from the market. It tells you right on the main screen.
ARMv7 INSTRUCTIONS:
Download whichever file you want and flash it in recovery.
APK only is for those who have already flashed a zip. You may simply push the new apk to /system/app (overwrite or remove the previous version), set permissions to rw-r-r (0644), and reboot to enjoy the latest version of Google Now. DO NOT TRY TO INSTALL THE APK BY ITSELF.
If you aren't sure which one to use, or if this is too much information or is otherwise overwhelming for you, just flash the M7 version - Offline/Online, since it's the latest. Be sure to scroll down a bit and read about it, though.
Before doing anything, you need to make sure you have at least 60MB of free space on your /system partition for Offline/Online files and 30MB of free /system space for Online Only files.
Flashable Zips:
M7 - mikeyxda's version 7. This version improves on M6 by tweaking notifications to be more accurate and frequent. This version may use more battery. If you are using a Sense ROM, see the troubleshooting below for a hack to improve Google Now performance and battery efficiency.
Online/Offline via Mediafire - 36.48MB /Hotfile mirror
Online Only via Mediafire - 14.06MB /Hotfile mirror
M7-Velvet.apk Only
M6 - Mikeyxda's version 6. This version has improved on the previous one by fixing the double take problem, typed searches are working, auto launch is fixed, as well as the following fixes from the previous version: Red mic with cards showing with no refresh needed, no FCs, offline dictation, and no stretched words. These zips all use zipalligned apks.
Offline/Online via Mediafire - 36.43MB /Hotfile mirror
Online only via Mediafire - 14.01MB /Hotfile mirror
M6-Velvet.apk Only
R3 - "Nearly there" version by ReekoTubbs. This version has the Red mic with cards showing with no refresh needed, no double take, no FCs, offline dictation, auto-launch, no blank screen, and no stretched words. These zips all use zipalligned apks.
Offline/Online via Mediafire - 36.48MB /Hotfile mirror
Online only via Mediafire - 14.07MB/Hotfile mirror
R3-Velvet.apk Only
How to:
Move the file you picked to the root of your SD card. Don't put it in any folder. This just makes it easier to find.
Reboot your device into recovery. See your device's specific instructions on how to do this if you are not sure. Google it for a faster answer.
In CWM, navigate to "Install zip from SD" and select that.
Next, highlight "Choose zip from SD card" and select it.
Scroll down to the Google Now zip you loaded onto your SD card, then select it.
Scroll down and select the option that says "Yes - Install Google Now....zip"
Once it has flashed, go back to the main CWM menu and select "Reboot system now".
Double Checking:
Some Recoveries do not do a good job of retaining the permissions being set by the zips. If you aren't using CWM or TWRP, then please follow these steps to ensure that everything is as it should be.
Let the ROM boot all the way, then fire up ES File Explorer (or whichever one you feel like using). We need to make sure a few permissions stuck (just in case).
If you haven't used ES File Explorer before, open it, then hit menu.
Tap settings, then scroll all the way down.
Check the box that says "Up to Root" (pic).
Then check the box that says "Root Explorer"
Allow root access when the dialogue box for Superuser pops up.
After that, check off "Mount file system", then back out of the menu. (pic)
Navigate to /system/usr/srec/ and find two folders named "config" and "en-US"
Tap and hold on the "config" folder icon to bring up the options menu, then scroll down to Properties.
Tap properties, then tap change and see if the check boxes match this picture.
If it matches, leave it alone and head back to your home screen to enjoy using Google Now! If it doesn't match, change it so it does.
Do the same thing for the "en-US" folder.
Go into the settings menu for Google Now and set it up for your Google account and various other settings.
Now What?
Troubleshooting:
If you are having an issue with Google Now, please refer to the thread originally created by cajunflavoredbob here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30809177&postcount=1
The red mic screen won't display.
To fix this, press the normal mic within the Google Now app. While it is listening (after it beeps), press menu > refresh. Now you're at the red mic.
Google Now Force Closes.
Make sure you have enough space on your /system partition before installing this. You need at least 60MB free for the Offline versions and 30MB free for the Online versions.

Oh and just to explain, the old gmail allows stuff based on signature, so as this apk is resigned it will not be allowed. The new gmail marks it as dangerous and will create a notification for you to allow permission, or the patched one marks it as normal and allows it silently.

My phone gets worse battery life or uses more data.
Read this post by Racer Of All and follow the directions using apktool. This is for advanced users running a Sense ROM only.
Sports cards aren't showing up.
It won't add teams that aren't in season. American football is currently in preseason. Baseball, however, works perfectly fine.
I want Google Now in another language than US English.
From the Google Now home screen with the cards, tap Menu, then Settings. Tap Voice, then Language and select the language you want recognized. The text of Google Now in searches and regular cards should mirror that of your system language.
My Galaxy SIII just received the new update which blocks local search, and Google Now won't work properly.

All files are on the device with the correct permissions except because of the different search apk (GoogleQuickSearchBox_USA.apk) the method mentioned in the OP won't work until you delete the _USA part of the file and then reboot into recovery and reflash following the OP instructions.

This is a quirk in the later apks. You may need to hit the little magnifying glass icon next to the search link. This will allow you to open those links properly.

Want to go back to stock?
If, for some reason, you want to remove Google Now and return to how you were before, flash the following zip. It removes all Google Now files, and returns the original Google Search app and voice files, as well as sets permissions for the Search app. Make sure to uninstall talkback and then reinstall it once you reboot to get voice search working again.

Ah, that means you already have the old Google Search on your phone (I ran into that too)- uninstall it or navigate to System/App and rename GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk in GoogleQuickSearchBox.bak and install the downloaded APK again
I keep getting the network error, even after clearing CACHE and DATA :/

Added new .apk in the OP which should solve fc issues for some users and a new Cards explanation

I am having the same issue and this suggestion does not work. I have renamed and tried to install multiple times. I have also deleted the old one and tried to install multiple times. Any other suggestions?

Worked! I can confirm that the OP instructions (if followed completely), work great. Thanks!

I would suggest making a Nandroid backup then try the zip and flash in CWM (clear cache and davlik - reboot will take longer the first time)
OR
Using Root Explorer
Navigate to System/app rename GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk to whatever you want to
Drag/Drop Velvet-theos0o-3.apk in System/app and rename it to GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk
Change permissions to rw-, r--, r-- and reboot (do NOT try and install the APK)
- it should definitely work then
When you restart - go to Manage Apps, find Google Search then clear data and cache (should clear up the network error)

I have tried both of these techniques multiple times. Never works. I am currently running AOKP and InsitgatorX Kernel. Can anyone with this combo confirm they have it working?

I'll Nandroid my current setup and run an AOKP here in a bit...
EDIT: Installed Chimera vs Skyrocket_RC1 - used Root Explorer, and renamed GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk to GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk.bak
Copied Velvet-theos0o-3.apk and renamed it GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk then changed the permissions to rw-, r--, r-- and rebooted
Works fine on that AOKP ROM
