I'm very new to Android and I have a few questions. I used to install custom OS's on my blackberry and I jailbroke my iphones so I'm some what used to this stuff but every operating system is obviously different. So I've had my S3 for about 6 weeks and I finally rooted a couple days ago. To root I followed this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1875914. I rooted, unlocked the bootloader, and installed clockworkmod recovery. Now I have been wanting to load a jelly bean ROM. I kind of wanted to load the Synergy ROM found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1792499. So am I ok to just download from that thread and drag and drop to my phone on my PC and just follow the directions? I don't have an external SD Card is just fine to use internal storage? Like I said all I have done is rooted from that first link. I just kinda wanted some verification before I go and brick my phone, thanks for your help.

Q: How do I install this ROM?
A: Download the ROM from the "Download Links" section above, place the file on your phone's external SD card, and then flash via your recovery. First boot after flash takes a wee bit longer than usual.

So, download the ROM (using either your phone (take note of where it saves it) or computer). If using your computer, connect your phone and drop that sucker somewhere on the SD card (external or internal -I use internal). (I create a folder in the root of my internal SD card called Files to Flash, in which I keep everything I flash, so it doesn't get scattered about, but do what you want )
Use Titanium Backup to back up all your apps and data to restore later (when you do restore, since you're going from ICS to JB, don't restore any System Data as it will cause many issues (apps and app data is fine)).
Reboot into recovery using Rom Manager, as mentioned in the rooting tutorial you followed.
Use your volume keys to navigate to "backup and restore" and select it using either the home or power button.
Select "backup" and wait for your nandroid backup to complete.
Next, navigate back to the original menu and select the "wipe cache/factory data reset" option.
Once that's done, select the "wipe cache partition" option.
(side note: Instead of doing those two things, I like to go into the "mounts and storage" option and select "format /system" "/data" and "/cache". Both ways work - BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO FORMAT SDCARD AND EXTERNALSD IF YOU USE MY METHOD...bad joo joo).
Select the "advanced" option from the initial menu and "wipe dalvic cache".
Now you're ready to install.
In the first menu, the second option is "install zip from sdcard." Select it.
Select "choose zip from sdcard" and navigate to where you saved the ROM and select it.
Scroll either up or down, passed all the "no"s and select "yes" and let it do it's thing.
Once it's done, navigate back to the menu you first started at by selecting the "Go Back" option, then reboot and profit.
letinsh posted pretty much the most concise instructions to follow. In addition, I'll suggest to backup your IMEI prior to flashing anything.

I totally forgot about it because I did it once and have flashed dozens of times since
Naganalf - as far as downloading via fone or computer, it's really 6 of one, half dozen of the other. Whichever makes you more comfortable. Keep in mind that it is HIGHLY recommended that you check the md5 sum of your download before flashing, to ensure you have a good download. I have an md5 sum checker on both my computer and fone, so I can do either fairly easily.
This is the one I used on my computer
and I use MD5 Checker by Fabien Thalgott (play store) on my phone.
Having just looked at the Synergy thread, they don't post md5's for their nightly's, so don't worry about that step for them, although, it typically is good practice to check (I hardbricked my S3 the third day I had it by pushing a corrupt file using Odin that would have been caught if I had checked the md5). (Got it JTAG'd back to life, so no worries - everything is recoverable from except physical damage )

No worries, dude. I agonized for days before I rooted and flashed my first ROM on my OG Droid back in the day - had one of the founders of DroidForums (synik4l) on G-chat while I did the deed...I was so chicken
Good times, though. Just do your research, understand what it is you're doing, mitigate any risks (by doing your research...) and go to town! Most of the bugs in the process have been ironed out by jokers like me testing and hard-bricking along the way . At this point, the processes are very user friendly and reliable:fingers-crossed:

If you haven't selected any options yet then just go back into your rom. You need to download EZ Recovery from the Play Store so that you can flash a custom recovery (ClockworkMod or TWRP) through that app.

I'm sorry but I'm a little confused. Why is it only giving me those options when I reboot into recovery from ROM Manager? The first time after I rooted I'm pretty sure there was an option to "Backup and Restore". Also, why can't I just go into ROM Manager and select "Install ROM From SD Card" and select my ROM that way? sorry but I do appreciate your help.

Good questions. The recovery you rebooted into is the Stock recovery that comes with the phone. Your OP in this thread says that you installed CWM recovery. It looks like it didn't stick. Two options - Use the program Snoop suggested, or open up Rom Manager and hit the "Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery" option.
From there you can continue as previously explained.
EDIT - I've never used the ROM Manager's install ROM from SD card option, so I can't speak to it. I know I like having the control (or perceived control ) of doing everything by hand in recovery.
ok I have loaded android version 4.1.1 build number SynergyROM Nightly JB(r111) so I guess i did everything correctly. now i'd like to get my phone kinda back to how i had it lol. if I run titanium backup will my home screens all be restored the way I had them? and when i run titanium backup i ONLY want to run "restore missing apps with data" right? not "restore missing apps + all system data" just want to make sure. thanks

Correct, don't restore the system data. Now, if you want your txt messages back, you'll see a yellow Messages backup (with a TiBu logo). If you restore that (the only option available is Data, I think), you'll get your txts back.
Remember that you'll prolly need to reboot after the restore, then use ROM Manager to Fix Permissions, then restart again. You'll be off to the races!
As far as getting your home screens back, I don't know if that'll be possible, although they're both TouchWiz launchers....might be alright, then
I run Nova launcher regardless of ROM, so all I have to do is restore the Nova app, then used the built in Nova backup/restore to get my home screens back. Let me know how the Titanium restore works! As a side note, if I have any doubt about whether I'll be able to get my launcher set back up (or I'm switching launchers to try them out), I'll take quick screenshots of all my screens and use that as a reference to set them back up

Nahh, just as simple as putting the ROM you want on your ex SD card or internal one which ever you prefer, wiping system/data , and wiping your cache, and then flash your new ROM . You can also "dirty flash" if say you are just moving from r111 of synergy to a newer one. Typically on the forum you will see if anyone had any problems dirty flashing. I always go with a clean flash just to avoid any problems to begin with.

I just threw out Nova as an example - there are several good launchers out there...Nova, Apex, Go Launcher (I'll probably catch flack for mentioning it), Trebuchet (from CM). Most if not all have the ability to backup your settings. Try 'em each and figure out which one works best for you :good:

+1 for Nova Apex is also pretty good. Like lentinsh said, most if not all have the ability to back up your settings, making flashing from ROM to ROM that much easier :good: Cant go wrong with Nova though :laugh:
App Restore
Hey peeps,
I have been able to flash a few new ROMs but can't quite get my Apps Restored. I have/had Titanium Back up installed and backed up. With each ROM I install I don't quite get how to restore the Apps I had installed, Titanium Back up gets dropped when I flash to a new ROM.
I'm going to search the Forum for App Backup 101...

I found I was repeating myself a lot when helping out people new to rooting their Evo. I also found that this knowledge I'm putting into this doc doesn't really exist in one place, but is spread throughout the entire Evo Forum. So below is some information to help out people with backing up their device, some backup tips, some general information on flashing, and tips and best practices for flashing. Hope this helps!!
Assumptions:
This guide assumes you are fully rooted at this point. If not follow any one of the guides in the Wiki that has been stickied on the main page of the Evo Dev forum. My personal recommendation is the Unrevoked. Very easy to use, just read up and make sure your phone is compatible.
To test root type "su" into a terminal. You should get a "#" back. You can use a terminal emulator from the market or ADB. To get ADB up and running follow this guide here. If that seems confusing than take a look at this guide I wrote for Notion Ink Adam Tablet users here. That guide is for Windows users, but Mac and *nix users shouldn't be much more difficult.
Backing up
NAND Backup:
Once rooted you can use the app quickboot to boot into recovery to do a NAND backup. If your ROM doesn't have this app installed, download from Marketplace. Open app and choose "Recovery". Once into your recovery use the volume buttons on the side to scroll up and down and power button to select to get to the option to backup. I have clockwork installed so my screen looks different, but you should be able to find the NAND backup option. This will take awhile so be patient.
Once done you can reboot and continue on as normal. This is an essential step (or using Rom Manager below). If you ever screw up something major or you try a new ROM and want to go back, this will allow you to restore easily and get back to a point where things worked fine. It would also be highly recommended to do one of these backups before doing something major that has potential to break things. Use best judgment here.
Rom Manager:
Even easier than the above is to use Rom Manager. Download it from the marketplace, run it, and let it update your recovery image for you. Once this is done go to the bottom of this app and choose "Backup Current ROM" This should do a full NAND backup. I would recommend buying this app for the other features it has, but it is up to you.
Titanium Backup (TB):
Once you have your NAND backup I would also recommend installing Titanium Backup from the Marketplace (I would also pay for the license because you get better performance and the dev deserves some green for this awesome app!). Once installed open it. The first time it will ask you to update Busybox. Let it and wait for this to download. When done it will ask you reboot app from the notification area. Do this and then wait for app to fully load, two messages should appear, the second one indicates it is fully loaded. Then hit menu and go to the batch section. Choose " Backup all user apps + system data".
This will backup everything on your phone for you to your SD card. This will take a while so go get some coffee and check back in. Do not close the app or turn off your phone, the screen can go blank and you can let it sit, but it will need time to run. I think when the screen turns off it puts an icon in notification that should be updating the progress of the batch. Once done, it should tell you in the notification area. For me it takes awhile with my 228 some elements I'm backing up. Your mileage will vary.
SMS/MMS
I recently came across a thread that mentions using Handy Backup for backing up SMS/MMS messages. I have not tried this app or used it so I don't have any directions to give on it. But I have had people ask and I have seen folks ask in other threads. So if TB doesn't give you enough, try this one too.
Backup to Computer:
I'm still looking for a better method for this one. I'm sure someone has something and if you do please let me know so I can update this section.
Currently I backup files and folders to my local NAS at home after major changes. Incremental changes I let TB handle. This is just a simple process of setting the SD card to storage and copy/paste. Works fine and I have only done this once so far after everything was set to my liking.
You might wonder why this important? Well if you are going to play around a lot with different ROMs and constantly read/writing info to your SD card, it is important because SD cards are not perfect. They can be corrupted and can fail from too much writing of info. It usually takes a lot of work to get one to the point of failure, but I managed to do it with my HTC Mogul so I can vouch that it can happen.
Important folders on SD card:
- /sdcard/clockwork/backup
This will get all backups performed by clockwork. If you grab the entire clockwork folder then you will get ROM downloads and such too. I don't really recommend this as it never takes more than 25 minutes for me to download any image. Plus with a secure NAND backup, you can always restore quickly.
- /sdcard/nandroid
This should backup the folder used by AmonRa recovery.
- /sdcard/TitaniumBackup
Folder used by TB for backing up of apps.
Of course throw in any other folders you deem important. What that is depends on you. Making a backup of everything else probably wont take long too. For me I rarely have more than 7gb of data on my card so backing up takes roughly 30-50 minutes.
All of this may seem like a lot of work, but once done you will have a robust system in place. And will allow you the opportunity to safely play!!
Restoring
Restoring is a simple process but can be time consuming. To speed things up you can pay for the full version of TB, which I highly recommend.
TB
Follow the directions below for what I do after flashing. If you have already read that and are ready to restore then do the following...
Open up TB and let if fully load, you will get two small popup messages. The second one means that TB has fully loaded the OS information. Then hit the menu key and choose batch. Scroll down and look for "Restore all apps with data". Run this batch to restore everything. Keep in mind if you backed up everything and are now changing ROMs that you might run into problems. I have yet to run across issues, but this is just an FYI. Also another reason to have a full NAND backup with Rom Manager. If you run into too many problems just restore with it and problem solved.
Restores and backups take awhile with TB, but are worth the wait. Once done with the full restore you can then do incremental backup and restores in the future.
Also don't forget to open up the apps after restoring and make sure the apps are setup how you want. Then double check with TB to make sure things are fully backed up, just click "Backup all new apps & newer versions". Once done with this reboot.
After a TB restore always reboot. After the reboot go into Rom Manager and NAND backup following the steps above in the backup section. This will ensure you have a full system backup with the settings you want.
Rom Manager
This one is pretty simple. Just open Rom Manager and choose "Manage and Restore Backups". Then choose your backup to restore. If you named the files by date and time you might have to do some guess work, but you should have a rough idea. Once you click the one you want just sit back and wait.
Flashing Tips and Problems

Many people have asked "Why flash custom ROM" or "What are the advantages"? Well I think one of the biggest reasons is performance gain from phone and apps. But for Evo users the number 1 reason should be better battery utilization. This can mean you see same amount of battery life, but with increased phone and app performance, or same performance, but longer battery life.
I think some people might be hesitant because it was one hell of a process rooting their device. Well to those people I say, you are over the mountain now. The hard part is done, flashing is relatively easy. I recommend doing it cause stock can cause some people minor issues and your are missing out on a lot of cool and useful customizations. And if you backup your phone as detailed above, you do not need to worry about losing anything.
Stock ROM with Root (back to defaults) or Completely Unroot:
To flash a stock ROM with root, download one from the wiki of ROMs. Then follow advice in below sections for flashing.
To unroot (This is the "I need to take my phone to Sprint" conundrum...) Follow the wiki link. Or go to HTC's website. Then go to the support section for the HTC Evo. Download the file from them and run it. You will be good to go. And if you followed the backup section above you do not have to worry about anything. Just re-root when you get your new phone or old phone back. And restore.
Also, I recommend taking out your SD card with all the root files on it. No need to bring this up or have to explain things any Sprint tech could easily see. Also if you used Unrevoked Forever you should follow this unroot guide here.
I Just Flashed with no Backups:
Below is what I did before I had Titanium Backup in place and after flashing a custom ROM...
Once booted right after flashing I make sure things look fine, fully sync to Google, then reboot. When I come back from that I turn on WiFi and go to Marketplace and Download section. Any apps I previously downloaded will be in that section waiting for me to download. Download them all at once, DO NOT leave that section before downloading everything, or you will lose that list and it will only show apps currently downloaded and installed.
Once done, open apps and customize to liking. Then download Rom Manager if you don't already have it and follow the above section. Once done with that follow the above section on Titanium Backup. Then enjoy your custom ROM.
Flashing in general:
ALWAYS make sure your battery is at least 50% full. The last thing you want is your phone to die on you in the middle of flashing.
Use Rom Manger and pay for the full version. It is a lot easier and can remove a lot of headaches and problems. If you really want to do it yourself you shouldn't have any problems, this is typically what I do and I haven't run any issues that couldn't be solved yet.
Follow the above backup guides before flashing another custom ROM. Save yourself time and trouble. Also I have read about people using NAND backups to sort of switch between different ROMs. In the short term that shouldn't be a problem, but long term that can make your SD card unstable. Make sure you follow the above section for backing up your SD card to computer.
If changing from one ROM to another it is best practice and almost always recommended to wipe data and dalvik cache. This also will alleviate many issues people run into. And if you follow my backup recommendations then it shouldn't be an issue to do either of these.
If not using Rom Manager, then put the zip of the ROM you want to flash on your SD card, and DO NOT unzip the zip file. Leave it on the root of your SD card as a zip file. Boot into recovery if you are not there already. Find the option to flash from SD card. Then choose the zip file or ROM you want to flash. Wait for everything to flash, then reboot using the option from the recovery menu. Wait for phone to boot. This can take a long time after flashing any new ROM so be patient.
Some ROM devs have other items you can add to their ROM. Follow their directions for flashing those items. Some devs want you to boot first than go back and flash, others allow for you to just start flashing right away with no waiting. Pay attention to the directions on your ROM thread. If you screw something up, try flashing the package again. If things look worse or it didn't work, re-flash your ROM or restore your backup and try again.
Otherwise, flash the ROM following directions above, flash the other packages and themes and items you want, and reboot. All should be well.
Once booted up follow guides above for backing up or restoring. Otherwise if you have problems look below before asking questions. If you can't find it here try searching before asking questions. If you still can't find it feel free to ask for help, but keep the question in the thread for your ROM you are flashing, or if you think it is a rooting issue, in the thread of the root process you followed.
Bootloop Issue:
This can be caused by a few things. For one, make sure you wipe data and dalvik cache before flashing a custom ROM. Even if the dev says it is not necessary do this before flashing a new ROM. It can help with these issues. The only exception here is if you are updating to a new version of the same ROM and the dev says there is no reason to wipe in between...
Also you can experience this if you are not fully rooted. Look toward the top of this guide for rooting advice.
Sometimes the ROM can take a while to boot after flashing a new ROM. Be sure you really do have a stuck boot or bootloop before doing a battery pull and troubleshooting. Give it some time to see if it fixes itself. If you are waiting over 30 minutes for something, you probably do have a legit issue.
Exclamation Point with Android Guy Screen
I got this when attempting to upgrade once. To get out of it, battery pull and put battery back in. Hold down "Volume Down Button" and then press power. KEEP HOLDING DOWN volume down button till white screen (Hboot) appears. Release volume down button. Wait for it scan. If it finds your PC file choose no and also no on reboot. NEXT CHANCE YOU GET remove, rename, or move the PC file from the root of your SD card. Choose "Recovery" from menu using volume buttons and power button to select. Once in recovery, choose flash from SD card and choose your ROM.
If you cannot find an image or do not have one, just go back and toggle USB. Then copy paste ROM to SD card. Keep in mind that you might need to wipe data and dalvik cache before flashing as mentioned above.
Another user commented this screen appeared when attempting to go into recovery from Quickboot app. This might mean the recovery image didn't install correctly, or could mean you do not have a recovery image flashed or installed. If this is the case, follow one of the guides in this wiki link to flash a recovery.
If you need to get out of this screen, just do a battery pull. Your ROM should boot up fine.
Battery Issues After Flashing:
Some have claimed issues with battery after flashing. To try recalibrating click here for Cyanogen's guide.

Very good question on SMS/MMS. I think I have noticed that when using Handcent SMS app for sending and receiving SMS/MMS messages they are somehow backedup. I think Handcent has a folder on the SD card.
Otherwise if you are using stock messaging app, I am not sure it TB backs that up or not. If you want to verify this for me and let me know your results I would be happy to update my guide.

Were you using stock messaging app? Or a third party one from Marketplace?
Thanks for the information. About to start this whole process soon so this really helped Just a quick question though, do classes of the sd card matter? Have a class 2 card atm but about to buy a 16gig class 6 and figured I should do everything then.

Yes, a higher class makes a big difference in speed. Make sure you wipe the new SD card from within the Evo before doing anything.
Dumb question (I'm new to Android):
When switching ROMs, both of which you have a backup for, do you have to wipe, flash the rom, then flash the nandroid backup?
Or would wiping and then flashing the backup work the same?

you should wipe. the backup will save everything you had on the respective rom

To switch ROM by restoring nand backups all you should have to do is go into recovery and restore the one you want. If you wanted to be safe you could wipe first. As far as flashing that rom before nand backup no. There would be no point of that. The nand backup restores ALL, everything that was on that phone previously. It is a full backup.

Yes, it should backup everything. Upon restore your phone should look and act just as it was when you created that backup. The backup system in Rom Manager boots the phone to recovery and does a nand backup for you.

I'm an idiot i think and just bricked my phone.
I used revoke website to root my phone I did not do a nand unlock. I then installed rom manager because I wanted to backup the current stock rom. I used the option to flash in something from rom manager and then back up. after that my phone restarted and all I see is a picture of a phone with and exclamation point. am I bricked? anything I can do? sorry I'm a noob.

Lol! You are fine. Fortunately HTC makes their phone tough to brick.
You are at that screen because you only did part 1 of Unrevoked's system. They have released part 2. Follow that and you should be good to go. Post questions on their threads. Good luck.

Benefits of Flashing a Custom ROM
While you’ll end up seeing a lot of benefits from custom ROMs, they all probably fall under 3 main areas:
Better Performance – You’ll be able to overclock Android or even see it built in with the ROM as well as see overall performance increases from various tweaks
Better Battery Life – One of the first things people do when rooting is remove stock apps. Don’t know how? Most developers have the apps already removed in their ROMs. Additionally, various system tweaks and improved kernels, as well as undervolting Android help to drastically improve Android battery life.
Better Overall Experience – Try other versions of Android such as those found on other phones that have been ported to yours; stay up to date with updates and new features; try out different Android themes, etc.
All in all, there are a LOT of benefits you’ll get from using a custom ROM on Android, so wait no more, here’s How to Flash a Custom ROM on Android.
Basic Steps
Choose the ROM that you want and download its .zip file
Transfer the zip file to your phone's sd card. Do not put it into any folder.
Turn off your phone and reboot into recovery, usually by holding the down button and power button at the same time.
Do a Nandroid backup
Wipe the phone by clear cache/factory restore and wiping dalvik cache
Flash the zip file that you put on your sd card
Reboot phone

If you're rooted, I recommend flashing to Amon Ra Recovery.
When you boot into Recovery, go into the Wipe section, there are options there to "wipe factory restore" and "wipe dalvik cache"
After you do that, go back to the main screen in Recovery mode and find where it says "flash from zip file" (or something along those lines), then navigate to where you have the Azrael zip file.

You don't have to rename anything.
What recovery are you using - Amon Ra or Clockwork
- If you wiped and performed a NANDROID backup, then select the option of "FLASH ZIP FROM SD CARD". Then you should see the .zip file of the ROM you downloaded, select that, confirm, and once done reboot.

After you flash a ROM, you don't need to restore the nandroid. The Nandroid back up is an image of your system at the time you do the back up. You would only restore the Nandroid when you want to go back to the version on the backup.
What I do with a ROM is load it, then get everything working the way I want it to and then do a back up of it. Can then go back to it whenever you want to after trying out more ROM's.

yes, I am already rooted. I had a major malfunction in BAMF 1.6.3 this a.m. when a battery went dead. I replaced the battery and the phone went nuts... So I unrooted the phone and then re-rooted. I couldnt get help in the IRC channel to install this ROM I am asking about so I thought I would try to get some help here.

I am not seeing the question here... Do you have rom manager installed? You could install simply from there. That's how I did my initial rom install.

Stock sense basic debloat ROM does not use the GB radio. And to install I would recommend not using rom manager to install it tends to cause problems.

Don't use Rom manager. Download the Rom. Reboot into recovery using Rom manager. Make a backup if you want. Wipe data. Wipe cache. Go to advanced. Wipe davlik cache and battery stats. Go to install zip from SD and select your Rom. When its done reboot.

2. After you have the ROM downloaded, plug your phone into you computer and put the ROM anywhere on your sd-card. I made a new folder called ROMs and put all my ROMs in there. This keeps things tidy.
3. THIS IS OPTIONAL, but saves you a lot of time in the future. Download Titanium Backup. I would HIGHLY recommend the PRO option. Costs money now, but will save you hours in the future. This program needs root. It will backup all your apps with their data so when you switch ROMs, everything is restored easily and fairly quickly. If you go with this approach, then open TB and backup all USER APPS with DATA. DO NOT BACK UP SYSTEM APPS!!!
4. If you do not have Rom Manager, Download it now. Free is fine. Open up Rom Manager and make sure you have the latest Clockwork Recovery installed. If you don't, then install it. If everything is fine, click the option to boot into recovery. While some people use RM to install the ROMs, I find its better to do it manually.

6. When done, press the menu key until it goes to the main menu.

The rom can't be in a folder on your SD card when flashing it has to be on the root of the SD card.

Thanks for the replies. For not knowing what the question was, it sure was answered pretty thoroughly.
I did buy Ti Pro a while back and use it a lot. That should be no problem once I figure out why I am not rooted now. I did the whole routine yesterday and Ti cant get su for some reason now.... yay for that. I guess I will try the whole thing again. (It may be that I need to get the proper busybox for Ti Pro to work and be allowed su)
So if I have read this correctly, I will be alright with the debloat ROM I mentioned earlier right? Since it is not gingerbread based right?

My ROMS are always in folders when I flash them on my devices and it has worked just fine!

If you're using CWR (which i think is the only option these days?) you totally can. Just choose "install from SD card" and it'll let you navigate your folders. I have a neatly organized "RUU" folder on my SD card. Certain things like radios need to pushed as pg05img.zip on the root of the SD card.

Well, with all the help, I did manage to get everything back as it should be. Thanks a lot for that too!
I got super tired of trying to get someone to answer me in IRC. I think I will just come here with my questions from now on and leave that place to those who have the patience for it.
I also got too used to BAMF I think because I ended up flashing to 1.7 anyway... 2.0 looks really good. I think that is still in Beta or I read the post wrong altogether...

Rooting Your Phone, Installing Clockworkmod Recovery, and Installing Google Apps
Gather the Required Files:
1. Go to the z4root xda thread, login in and download z4root.1.3.0.apk:

2. Download SH7218u_recovery.apk:
(attached below)
3. Download the Clockworkmod recovery flashable Google Apps file from the following site:

In the table, you want to select the HDPI, CyanogenMod 6 version. The file that you download should be
called 'gapps-hdpi-20101114-signed.zip'
4. Place these three files on your micro-SD card and insert the card into your phone.
Root Your Phone
1. Boot up your phone and skip the system setup wizard. Go to the app drawer and run 'Settings'.
2. Select 'Applications', and enable 'Unknown sources'.
3. Select 'Development', and enable 'USB debugging'.
4. Exit back out to your home screen launcher, then go to the app drawer and run 'ES File Explorer'.
5. The file explorer should show you the contents of your sd card. Tap on the file 'z4root.1.3.0.apk'.
6. Confirm installation of z4root, and when this is complete select 'Open' to run the app.
7. From within z4root, press the 'Permanent Root' button.
8. Wait until this process is complete, and the phone will reboot by itself. It can take 30 seconds or so for this to happen, so be patient. You are now rooted.
Flash Clockworkmod Recovery Image
You must be rooted for this to work. Do this after you have successfully completed the rooting process above. Also please note that this is not the CWM recovery image developed by Gigi Tse. Her image contains CWM version 3.0.2.4. This is my recovery image and contains CWM version 5.0.2.8.
1. Open the app drawer and run 'ES File Explorer'.
2. Tap on the file 'SH7218u_recovery.apk'.
3. Confirm installation and run the application by selecting 'Open' once installation is complete.
4. On startup, the application will request Superuser privleges - press 'Accept' to allow this.
5. Press the 'Flash Clockworkmod Recovery' button.
6. Wait a few seconds until you see the confirmation message 'Recovery Flash Complete'.
7. Exit out of the application. You now have Clockworkmod as your recovery. You can uninstall the SH7218u_recovery app if you wish as you have no further use of it.
Note for users of Link2SD: This version of Clockworkmod recovery will perform backup and restore operations on the secondary SD card partition used by Link2SD. However, that partition must be formatted in the ext3 filesystem for this to work. Formatting the partition in any other filesystem (e.g. ext2, fat32, ext4, etc.), will result in failure to mount and backup the partition. An SD card can be prepared for use with Link2SD from within this version of Clockworkmod recovery by using the 'Partition SD Card' feature within the 'Advanced' menu.
Install Google Apps
1. Boot into Clockworkmod Recovery. This is done by powering down your phone, then turning it back on by pressing and holding down the number 3 and 6 buttons together, then pressing and releasing the power button. Continue to hold the number 3 and 6 buttons until you see the Clockworkmod screen.
2. Select 'install zip from sdcard' from the menu.
3. Select 'choose zip from sdcard' from the next menu.
4. The next menu will be the contents of your sdcard. Select the Google Apps file - 'gapps-hdpi-20101114-signed.zip'.
5. Confirm the installation and wait until it is complete.
6. Press the back button once to get back to the main screen and select 'reboot system now'. You now have Google Apps installed.
When you reboot the device, you will be taken through the Google account setup. Please note that in order for contacts applications to work with Google synchronization, you will need to install a modified contact editor. The stock firmware on this phone is not intended to sync with the Google servers as it was intended for Chinese users. The modified contact editor fixes this issue. It is free and available from the Market. Look for 'Contact Editor Free' by a developer named 'dmfs'.

Hey someone read my thread!!
Sorry, no posts on this thread yet and it has been up for a while. I think most people who have this phone stick to Howard forums or other such sites that cater to the phone type and its region of origin.
As for your question, no...but I have tried. That would require a modification of the phone app or a change to the OS itself as the phone app is the active app when the phone is ringing and the device is opened. If I had the source code for the stock phone app, this would be a fairly easy thing to do. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find the source for the stock device firmware anywhere. I tried compiling a generic Froyo phone app from the Google source, but of course this did not work. This is a somewhat special app that needs to interface with several parts of the device's hardware, so a generic version just doesn't work. Unless Sharp releases the full source code for the stock firmware, I don't think this is going to be possible....at least not from someone with my somewhat limited development abilities.

Have you considered adding Google Play to the mix? I was able to get the latest version working just fine on my SH7218u.
How hard would it be to hack the light notifications area of the phone, to make some of the notifications last for 1-2 seconds longer?
I should also add that my phone is giving some really flaky GPS information. It is putting me somewhere in the ocean near China unless I use wifi only. Do you have any experience with this?
EDIT: I don't know why, but the dialer is not working for me with regard to the long-press of the delete key and silent (#) key. No idea why...

Not likely to come. This would mean building something like CM7 for a new device from scratch. This kind of task takes dozens of man-hours for an expert developer, and that assumes that they have access to the original source for the release build. We do not have the original source, and there is no such developer working on this device. We will be stuck with Froyo.

I received my SH7218u today and did everything. The instructions were clear and the whole process took no more than 30 minutes.
Surprisingly, my SH7218u accepts 64 microsd card (after you format it).
Is it ok to have 2 partitions?
One is a ext2, and the other I just created using clockwork mod ext3...
I'm wanting to use that custom rom..
EDIT: clockwork mod Repartitioned my ext2 to ext3 now ಠ_ಠ
and all my apps are "installed"

Boot into clockwork mod by pressing 3and 6 and the power on button, (assuming you have that installed)

It is usually just easier if you wait until you have the new ROM installed before you try and install your apps. There is no reliable way from within CWM to restore your installed apps.
However, because the new ROM is just a modified version of the stock ROM, it should be possible to flash the new ROM without wiping the existing user data and keeping your installed apps. Restore your backup that has all of your apps installed. Then, flash the modified ROM but skip the step in the instructions that tells you to wipe existing user data. Instead of wiping the user data, do the following:
1. In the 'mounts and storage' menu of CWM recovery, select to format both '/system' and '/cache'
2. In the 'advanced' menu of CWM, select 'Wipe Dalvik cache'
Now proceed with installing the ROM as per the instructions. This should result in the modified ROM being installed, but all of your installed apps should be protected.
If this does not work, then you will just have to re-installed the modified ROM according to the instructions (including wiping the existing user data), then re-install all of your apps. For future reference, a great app called Titanium Backup will allow you to backup your apps and restore them after changing the ROM.

Agree with sirjoe1. Hopefully you flashed CWM as your recovery before you did this. However, if not then booting into recovery mode as described above should trigger a factory reset from the stock recovery partition. I have not attempted this myself with the stock recovery, but usually what this will do is simply return your device to it's stock state. You can then start over using the instructions in the OP....but without deleting critical system apps this time.
Hello again, I've a question, has anyone successfully Overclocked the cpu frequency on this phone using setcpu or similar apps?
Overclocking not possible without either a custom kernel or a kernel module of some sort. As the source for the stock kernel was never released, such a thing would be a HUGE undertaking. Very unlikely to ever happen.

I might have messed up my phone -_- (again)
I went into the /data/sdext2/dalvik-cache and deleted everything and now a few apps have gone missing, and some won't work, they just give me a force close error >___<
I also lost my go launcher ex settings..
and to make things worse.... my internal memory went to 0% free... deleted a few things to clear up 8mb..

Hello everyone i just got my first android phone HTC ONE X with AT&T and I'm new to the whole android community my old phone was a iPhone and so far i love the one x a lot more then my iPhone.... anyway i rooted my phone and unlocked the boot-loader and now i don't know what/how to do. i know about roms but i don't know of any good ones, so if anyone can help me by telling me what exactly i can do with my rooted phone and tell me about roms any information will be helpful

you need twrp recovery to flash roms.you can flash them 10 times a day.
All Sense 4.0 ROMs here is stable for daily use becase they are based on official ruu.
I highly suggest aokp and then flash cm10 when it gets more stable. Also get titanium backup.
Welcome! I was new to all of this pretty recently as well but you'll find this community to be extremely helpful. The good thing is you already did the hard part, flashing roms on this device is very easy as long as you take the necessary precautionary steps. Since there is so much information on this forums, I know how hard it is to find simple answers at times with them being scattered all over the board and all so I'll just give em to you here
First off, make a "nandroid". Turn off your phone, then hold the power and volume down key until you get into boot loader mode. Then simply navigate the options to make a backup of your phone, very simple you've just made a "nandroid". Next boot your phone normally, go into the play store and search for and download the following apps:
1. Goomanager
2.SMS backup and restore
3. Titanium backup ( pay for the pro version if you don't want to reinstall every app one by one)
First run goomanager, it will ask for super user access, grant it. Then you need to install twrp (a third party recovery program that is preferable for our devices over cwm because it gives less problems) through goomanager by hitting the menu option while in the app and selecting "install open recovery script".
Once that is done open titanium backup and hit the little check mark at the top right, choose the option to "backup all user apps". Don't backup system data because if you restore system data when you flash a new rom it will give you problems since it is a whole new system, make sense right?
OK now open SMS backup restore and backup all your text messages that you don't want to lose. Make sure u sync all your contacts to your Google account for easy recovery as well.
Now you're ready to flash a rom. I suggest either aokp (which I use and love daily) or cleanrom if you want a stock experience without bloatware. I prefer aokp because I love aosp, the way android was meant to be and it doesn't kill your apps as soon as you leave then.
Either way you can try both and decide for yourself.
Download the rom zip file and transfer them to your phones memory, I usually put the rom zip files in a folder labeled "roms". You also want to download and transfer a zip called "gapps". There are the stock Google apps and you will flash it after flashing your rom.
OK now just reboot your phone, select reboot into recovery and it will restart and take you to twrp. Then you need to do a factory reset first (I do it twice) then wipe dalvik and cache (I do this before and after flashing the rom to be safe), then just hit install, navigate o the folder where you put the rom zip in and hit flash. Then flash the gapps zip once the rom is done flashing then wipe dalvik and cache again and voila you have a new rom on your phone! So just reboot the phone and youre golden.
Download titanium backup again and use that to restore all your apps, then SMS backup to restore texts and that's it. Good luck man hope this helped since it definitely would've helped me when I first started. You must use openrecovery-twrp-2.1.8.1-evita.There's been an accident with cwm (ported recovery)+aroma+God knows what=no sim card detection forever.
twrp-2.1.8.1 is stable,does everything you need,keep it that way.
And try to stay away from radios and recovery changes/updates.
And yes,to have HTC Device and use Senseless ROMs does not make sense at all...
flash a Sense rom to start then go venture out into the aosp world once they are stable. There are many roms to choose from. Just be sure to read the OP before flashing and if you have questions about the rom it self, ask in that forum too.

Well,I wouldn't say that, HTC makes great hardware, incredible build quality, others...not so much.to me running senseless HTC makes plenty of sense

I agree.. used to love sense. Even used the sense dream board themes on iphone haha... Once I got past my honeymoon period of my first real android, I'm all for aosp.. makes a great deal of sense to me
