Hey, don't try to fool anyone we all know marines don't need life preservers I'm army so I figured Id atleast try to help ya out. I ran into quite a few build.prop issues too. Depending on what rom your on depends on wat build.prop tweaks could screw up your gsm. I personally don't use Mavrom so I cant just upload a mavrom one for you. My first suggestion is to use the one you used after you flashed the xt883 radio to get on att in the first place. If that doesnt work/you dont have it/or just want to edit it yourself. Try any some of these:
Try my build.prop see if that works, you never know so ill attach that(remove ".ZIP" from the filename before using)
Make sure you are editing everything properly for your current rom not just for the gsm features.
Downloading a build.prop from someone who has Mavrom already working with a xt883 radio.img
Make sure your permissions are set right and stay after a reboot(this one is often overlooked and is the issue).
If none of that works, you might try downloading a newer xt883 radio compatible with the D3, flashing back to the stock of whatever you started with, reflashing the new radio.img. installing the newest safestrap for D3, activating it, installing your Mavrom again THEN pushing your build.prop after your modifications and rebooting.
Hope I've helped Voodoo
.....dont take this the wrong way I dont believe for a second your thick but im going to over explain things for those a little less droid informed who may end up in this thread searching for solutions to their similar problem.
One of the first problems I ran into was not properly pushing the build.prop to the system folder. Partially cuz at first I had NO freaking clue what "Push" was supposed to mean in that context...which ended up meaning just mounting the system R/W(Read and Write), overwriting the original file, saving unmounting the system then rebooting. My solution to this problem was getting my hands on the full version of Root Explorer. Navigating to the modified gsm capable build.prop, long pressing and selecting "MOVE", navigating to the "/system" folder, Tap the button at the top labeled "Mount R/W" and then tapping "PASTE".
Another problem I ran into was not properly assigning the right permissions to the file. Which was an easy fix by going into Root Explorer again, navigating to the folder I placed the build.prop in and mounting R/W once again, long pressing and selecting "PERMISSIONS" and assigning as so:
Read Write Execute
OWNER (ֻ/) (ֻ/)
GROUP (ֻ/)
OTHER (ֻ/)
And the biggest problem I had was incorrectly editing the buil.prop in the first place which I fixed by just googling up and downloading a build.prop from someone else who had the same rom I had.

Anybody want to be a guinea pig

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743506
I was wondering if anybody was willing to try this on their captivate and see if it worked for us or any dev's willing to try and port this over to our side.
seems to be working fairly well for them
edit: their hitting 1400+ Quadrant scores and all functions work on their phone from what I see
UPDATE 3:
Tutorial:
-1. Download VibrantDeodexed.zip from thread posted.
1a. Flash stock Odin3 rom. (For the Captivate).
1b. Root
2. Download ROM Manager from Market.
3. FlashClockworkRecovery for Captivate in ROM Manager.
4. Transfer the VibrantDeodexed.zip to /sdcard/ root.
MAKE SURE YOUR ext3 PARTITIONED SDCARD IS INSERTED
5. Reboot to Recovery (in ROM Manager)
6. Install zip from sdcard>choose zip>VibrantDeodexed.zip
7. After it finishes, reboot and be patient. The initial startup takes some time...
Added Fortune090 instructions on how to get this on our captivates. KUDOS to him for testing it out for us
Please note this is still very EARLY and major problems could happen if you do this wrong.
We're not responsible. This is beta
UPDATE 4: I updated the tutorial to a more extensive one, but there is another thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747397
that is more promising, no gps problem. Waiting for an update version for easier install
The Captivate and Vibrant function completely differently as far as those speed fixes go.
Read this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740747
I was hitting around 1800 in Quadrant, but the fix wasn't showing any real-world speed increases, and had some bad issues regarding the mic and voice calls, along with wake up lag.
I'm not saying this won't work, but I'm assuming it won't work well or function the same way...
EDIT: Guess I can try it though, seeing as no one else has. Glad my phone's finally communicating with Odin properly so I don't have to worry about the brick I did before... I'll update with any issues.
UPDATE1: Rebooted into recovery and tried to reinstall packages to install the update, and it failed. Trying another one of the methods described to see if they'll work.
UPDATE2: Got it installed (I think), but it seemed to go way too fast and kept going between recovery and rommanager. Phone's loaded and it's running Quadrant now to see if there's any change.... Didn't think so. Still getting in the 900's. Time to continue trying... haha. I originally used Clockwork for Captivate, so that could have been the problem trying Vibrant to see if that'll make a difference...
thanks for the try, I guess we'll just have to wait until something more substantial gets worked up for our side

I'm guessing that you'd have to flash the Vibrant ROM first, and I've known that's caused issues for Captivate users. I'm still trying with the Captivate stock Odin ROM though... Will definitely post if I have any success...
EDIT: I actually think I found my mistake... hold on...
EDIT2: Yes... definitely was a dumb mistake. It's copying the files now. Waiting for it to boot. Was told it takes awhile for the initial boot...
UPDATE: Ok, everything booted up fine, and I can tell this is the Vibrant ROM. The speed fix wasn't applied though. Might be because my external is partitioned with ext4. Could that be the problem? I didn't see any script load that didn't before...
UPDATE2: Reformatted my external to ext3 and got results!!! Quadrant got to 1446! Time to check some real world applications now. (phone call, bluetooth, I know wi-fi works, etc) I'll update with news.
Keep us updated. I don't know if the ROM includes the radio firmware, so make sure to have the stock captivate radio.
I'd love to see a speedtest.net to see if HSUPA works correctly!
Ok wow. I'm impressed. I'm seeing actual speed increases and so far everything is working perfect. No wake up lag, no static in phone calls, Quadrant scores are way up, plus you get some of the advantages of the Vibrant rom without having to flash it. (ie. OPTION to allow non-market apps, unlocked Market...)
So far it's a thumbs up all the way!
Tutorial:
1. Flash stock Odin rom (For the Captivate).
2. Download ROM Manager from Market.
3. Install the Captivate Clockwork for Captivate
4. Transfer the VibrantUpdate.zip to /sdcard/ root.
MAKE SURE YOUR ext3 PARTITIONED CARD IS INSERTED
5. Reboot to Recovery (in RM)
6. Install zip from sdcard>choose zip>VibrantUpdate.zip
7. After it finishes, reboot and be patient. The initial startup takes some time...
8. ENJOY!
Currently working on getting rid of the T-Mobile startups and shutdowns, but that takes no time at all. Thanks for this!!!
EDIT: Problem. GPS no longer functions at all from what I'm seeing. When using my location in Maps, the application freezes... Going to check the *#*#1472365#*#* settings to see if anything there's causing the problem...

Sorry for the triple post, but another thing I noticed... Titanium Backup is not recognizing all of the T-Mo bloatware or ANY of the installed applications... Anyone have any idea why?
Also, Swype FC's after about 3 seconds, but I'm assuming a reinstall will solve the problem... Haven't checked quite yet. Still testing a bunch of things.
EDIT: TB problem solved. Go to Problems? from the main menu, Yes do it. Everything showed up after it updated BusyBox.
Still trying to figure out the GPS problem...

GPS, GPS, GPS...
Changed the settings in the 1472365 menu, and nothing worked. Anything that involves GPS crashes the second you tell it to use it. Phone doesn't freeze though.
QUICK: Can someone post the STOCK shutdown files? Sound: /system/media/audio/ui/shutdown.ogg Video (folder of .pngs): /system/media/shutdown
Would be greatly appreciated. Want to get rid of the T-mo branding the update applied...
WOW, I'm amazed that it works, thats great to here there have been little problems except GPS function. It could be the drivers for vibrant are different for captivate? I'm not really sure I dont know much software but that seems like the most basic explanation I can think of.
EDIT: Did you try deleting the GPS data and starting over from scratch? or gps test from the market? its possible that GPS just needs to reset itself? or something...

Hm, could be possible we need to get the gps stuff from the captivate kernal and not the vibrants?
EDIT: so I emailed the OP from the vibrant one, for the original mod, seeing if he can help us out with ext4 problem and the GPS problem as well. Hope we can get this fully up and running

Alright sweet. Hopefully we see this completely take off. Not using the GPS at all, I'm seriously enjoying it, but I know it's a problem for everyone else.
Sent from my Captivate.
question for reverting back to stock is the same method in the forums? or will it be different
Can you use ROM manager's backups to undo the ROM flash? I want to make sure that I can go back to my stock AT&T ROM after I test out this vibrant ROM.
thats pretty sweet.
just gotta get the gps up and going now.
I'm not sure... When I flash I use Odin.
Another minor bug I've noticed is that with texts, the notification doesn't go away until you clear all notifications. Not TOO big a deal, but it didn't happen with my stock firmware. Might be a Vibrant thing... idk...

settings.db and settings.db.backup. . . .i screwed up.

I searched for anything similar before I posted here, however I doubt anyone else was dumb enough to do what I did.
Long story short I got a replacement phone because of the random lockup issues. I agreed to keep this one at stock JF6 for a couple of weeks to appease the manager at my local AT&T store. He said nothing about me rooting it though
Everything works fine, great even. I still love this phone even without Froyo, but I stupidly deleted settings.db and settings.db.backup.
How the heck am I to sideload if I don't have the file to edit?! Again, the phone works fine without the files there at all. . .
Thank you in advance.
It works fine? Have you rebooted the phone at all? There is a lot more than just side loading settings in that db file. If you haven't rebooted, my guess is that everything was saved in memory and being run that way. However, you may be in for a serious problem should a reboot occur.
Anyone have some thoughts on a solution? Would posting another settings.db work for him or are they very device specific?
Settings DB has some device specific settings. The only recourse is to do a Flash back to stock if you deleted system files.
Rooting the phone is not keeping it stock as rooting is making changes to files. Deleting and or modding settings.db is also not keeping it stock... so you really didn't honor the managers request.
You can always sideload a non-rooted phone using ADB or side load wonder machine.
Yeah, I went ahead and bit the bullet and rebooted it. It's fine, absolutely fine, strangely.
The manager only asked that I not replace the O.S. with say, 2.2 so I can have flash and other specs I bought this phone for. Regardless of the issues with AT&T and Samsung, I want what I paid full price for as a consumer.
That being said, rooting for one click lag fix is all that was done to this phone other than deleting a little bloatware. All of this went fine.
The problem lies in my dumbness being allowed to have two identical phones in each hand and trying to clear off the old phones files before sending it back to AT&T. I had a memory lapse and when I snapped to I was deleting on the wrong phone. Nothing suspicious, no mal intent. Just stupid human error.
I, like trekie, have been wondering if I can just use a stock setting.db and edit it to match whatever it needs to match on my phone. I do not remember what all lies in the file.
Because the phone is ok, my guess is it reads from settings.db for changes. If there are no changes, the programs that relied on settings.db just go on as they are. If there is no settings.db, the program just continues on with the values last obtained from said database.
Thoughts?
My guess. Slap on the odin and get that thing back to its out-of-the-box configuration. Good luck!
Thanks, I'm deffinately not waiting around for my froyo update from AT&T just because the Vibrant is getting it lol!

SQlite tether hack ICS

this is for the att ICS leak 4.0.4
open sqlite
settings storage
settings.db
settings line 113
value is set to 1
edit record to 'disabled"
reboot
should have mobile hotspot!
hit thanks if i helped ya!!
Just a small contribution: if you don't have SQLite you can find the database in the file /data/data/com.motorola.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
Open it on any database editor, then go on the section settings and look for the "entitlement_check" field and change its value to zero.
Mine was on line 148.
neither method worked for me, i get the following error:
"Update failed- error code 14: unable to open database file."
fran7382, where did you saw this error?
Here I copied the file /data/data/com.motorola.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db to my sdcard, edited it with aSQLiteManager on the Atrix 2, and copied it back to the original directory.
By the way, if someone had a problem to configure an APN with DUN type, you can do it editing the file /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db and putting the "DUN" directly in the field.
i get the error right after i try to change it to disabled or 0.

And you're rooted ? Saying allow when superuser asked permission?
It's easy to select deny since the selections are reversed on ICS. I've got to get back in the habit of watching for that myself. Because Jim is a frickin God.
Works like a champ.
NOTE: Do not add quotes on disabled Reboot is mandatory for database change to be recognized !
Mine was line 148 also.
I have changed that line with sqlite and now i can activate mobile hotspot. When i do however i get an error now saying "mobile data link lost" Anyone have any suggestions?
I am using this phone on straight talk and have changed my apn if that has anything to do with it.
I'm definitely rooted, I even uninstalled and re-installed sqlite editor and allowed superuser permission. Oh well lol, maybe this way I can stay under the 2 GB limit.
Lol. You can also go to system/app and rename entitlementservice.apk and it's related file. (one other with a similar name) to .bak files and reboot. This fixes it also, makes it so you can use Webtop 3.0 without it *****ing about the entitlement check and kicking you off either.

What is the other one with a similar name? I changed entitlementservice.apk but when I went to start hotspot, settings force closes. Not sure if its because I never found the other file or because I am running SCV7. Any suggestions? Thanks

it does "fix" the lapdock kick, but you still cant use mobile hotspot, its a lesser fix than this one.

I had the same issue at first. It ended up being cuz I had mobile data turned off. I just assumed it would come on automatically. If thats not it then I got nothing.
hello, i found the answer here: http://www.pantz.org/software/sqlite/unabletoopendbsqliteerror.html
you need to change permissions to folder, db and journal files, then edit record with sqlite.
INCORRECT.

It ABSOLUTELY enables mobile hotspot on your device. I just did it and connected my GFs Nexus 7 to my Atrix 2 hotspot. You MUST reboot your device after modifying the line in SQLite, (as mentioned above). Now the bad news...your carrier will most likely find out if you abuse the hotspot. Also, it drains the battery like a SOB. Good luck.

I think it was the statement was referring to the "go to system/app and rename entitlementservice.apk and it's related file. (one other with a similar name) to .bak files and reboot. Not the editing with SQLite. That fix has been around for quite a long time.

Honor 6 L04 issues with the Lollipop update

After downloading and flashing the official B521 update, sure there was no usable keyboard app, so I had to voice search to a 3rd party site to download one, but other than that all was well... or so I thought. I happened to switch my phone's mobile data setting to 3G only, during a spot of bad reception (the constant switching made it impossible to do anything), after which I realised that this update had removed all the LTE options from the dropdown menu.
My first instinct was to go to the "project act menu" from the dialler, but that would not load at all, when typed in correctly and confirmed...the phone just clears the number input area and doesn't open any menu. At this point, I did not know how I was going to sort out the issue, I thought maybe a .prop or .db file would be the answer. I have edited such files on other phones to do a number of things, should be simple right? Boy was I wrong.
Before beginning to poke around I did some searches of course, and found that you can get the 4G options back, by editing a value in the /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db ...So I unlocked my bootloader, rooted, and did just that. Put the file back in place, swell, guess I'll reboot. Then it froze on the Honor logo, impossible to turn off, with good timing--I was able to access the stock recovery and fastboot modes.
Since then I have been able to get my phone to boot by deleting the settings.db, so that Android created a new one, only problem is... this new file of course has so much hardware specific things missing from it...It's kind of a joke. All I wanted to do was allow myself to freely switch between 4G and 3G on the Lollipop update, and in trying to do so, bricked the device and had to lose all the stock settings in order to get it working again.
I changed the permissions and ownership of my edited settings.db (as best as I could in root explorer) after replacing it, but nothing seems to help as far as I can tell, if the settings stay I cannot boot.
How exactly am I meant to get the original database back? I assume if I can downgrade to the Kitkat, that will sort that side out, but even if I do that...and then reflash Lollipop... I'm still going to be losing the 4G option, unless I never change it from auto--ever.
This is just silly and frustrating... Literally all I want is the official settings.db for this phone on lollipop aside from: the network modes changed so that I can switch between 2G/3G/4G, 3G only, and 4G only modes. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do this on my own, and I wish I made a backup before trying...
Please help, thanks~

Deleting Hardware files leads sometimes to brick the phone

Hey there,
I started recently to look up for a way to permanently disable my wifi, bluetooth, NFS, Network and GPS. Unfortunately I didnt find a proper method to do that. There was the option to physically break the hardwares, but I didnt want to risk that, if I get something wrong there I wouldnt have a 2nd chance. Except of that, there was only some ways to disable the wifi but it was easy to re-enable it again.
Anyways I figured out, that I need to root my device in order to remove hardware files, but the problem is I dont know WHICH files would be okay to remove.
I'm using a samsung galaxy s8 with Android 9 Pie
Till now I rooted my device twice and deleted hardware files,
the first time I deleted wifi hardware files from the system/etc/permissions folder. That lead to brick my phone.
The second time I deleted hardware files of bluetooth and nfc from:
system/lib
system/lib64
system/vendor/etc/init
system/vendor/etc
system/vendor/lib64
system/vendor/permessions
surprisingly it worked, I totally disabled bluetooth and nfc.
Then I wanted to proceed to remove gps (I figured out S8 aint using gps but gnss) so I removed the gnss files and folders. But this time, it bricked my phone, so I had to reinstall the samsung firmware again and now I rooted my device again.
Before I start trying again, I would like to ask you, if any of you have some knowledge about this and if there is any no-go files, which I should never remove or smth.
I dont really just want to try out over and over, it is taking much time to do all this... I hope somebody can help me out.
Additionally, do any of you know how the network hardware is called? basically the hardware which lets you call people or just the hardware which connects to a network provider.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The reason why I want to do this shouldnt be important right? but if you want to know why:
I want to keep my privacy. I want to be able to connect to the internet only via ethernet cable and also I want to use my device more as a map to plan routes, camera, calc etc.
ALOT of other people want to do this too, but nobody (after searching for over 20 hours) had the right solution. Every way I found, it was possible to reenable it easily.
Thank you for taking your time and reading my issue! I hope you can help!!
I will give an update about this anyways!
I'm using a samsung galaxy s8 with Android 9 Pie
Model: SM-G950F
Update:
----------------------------------------------
I found a way to disable the following hardware:
(disclaimer: there is probably tons of methods to permanently disable hardware, but this is how it worked for me)
Ofc you need to root you device, I used TWRP as boot loader.
MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR DEVICE
you could loose your data forever!! and dont do the same mistake I did, not backing up the contacts.
Contacts are NOT in the internal storage, therefore you need to do a back up while rooted!!!
Tip: every file you edit or delete, make a backup of the original one and name it differently. If your android bricked, then you can use TWRP and delete the modified file and rename the backup again to the original name. This would help you to prevent wasting much time.
Bluetooth:
Delete the following file:
/system/vendor/lib64/hw/[email protected]
WiFi:
Delete the following file:
/system/vendor/lib64/[email protected]
GPS:
Delete the following file:
/system/vendor/etc/gnss/gps.xml
Some files I just edited them, these are permissions file, if you delete them completely, android wont work anymore.
You need to delete everything between <permissions></permissions>
You can edit the files using text editor
GPS:
Edit the following file:
/system/vendor/etc/permissions/android.hardware.location.gps.xml
NFC:
Edit the following file:
/system/vendor/etc/permissions/android.hardware.nfc.xml
Telephony:
I tried to dial emergency numbers, which should be actually possible with or without a sim card, but it didnt work.
Edit the following file:
/system/vendor/etc/permissions/android.hardware.telephony.gsm.xml
And that's it, now just restart your android and it should work with no problems.
I would recommend to download everything you want to have on your phone, before you get rid of wifi.
WARNING:
Most google applications like google map wont work, after you get rid of the gnss/gps. Google doesnt like it, if you turn off your location lol
The network data (LTE, 4G ...etc) is not tested and I am not sure if it is even disabled, I have the feeling that Telephony is not the same. I dont use a sim card anyways, so yeah. But if I found out a solution for that too, I will post it here for sure!
have fun!!
