Hey guys, there is a strange issue that I found out about just today.
My Co-Ed has a Sensation with official ICS update on it - no root, no hacked apps, nothing related to unofficial.
So the problem is that almost every pic she has on her device and every tracks is beign displayed twice in the gallery and the stock music player.
The file manager doesn't show two of the same files, so maybe it's a problem with SD card. The thing is - if she deletes one track - both of the displayed ones dissappear.
Whay could be the problem and how can it be solved? Should she change hee SD card, reinstall the ROM or try a factory reset? Hope you can help me (and her)

one suggestion is backup everything from the sdcard to a pc and format the sdcard

Thanks, we'll try that. Any other suggestions on how to fix this bug?
It only appeared recently, probably because the internal storage/SD card is almost full and there's no space left, or am I wrong?
/bump
When you format your SD card it will erase everything on it so you can restore from computer only what you want restored. So essentially you start with a new fresh card. Or if you want more space buy another SD with more space transfer what you saved on computer and do it that way. Best wishes. FYI Amazon has 64 class 10 on sale pretty cheap. I got one. It works perfectly! You have to format through recovery first to get device to recognise it. You do this by putting card in slot, pulling battery, put battery back in, press volume power at same time, boot into boot loader, press recovery, power for yes, then in recovery press format SD card. You have to get in recovery like this because UN formatted SD will prevent the usual way. Once formatted you're good to go. Device will then detect the card perfectly. It's been running perfectly in mine ever since. I got a great deal on the San disk. Take a look you will be surprised how cheap the 64 class 10 is. Also I tested the SD and yes it's truly the class 10.running exactly as it should. Hope this helps you out. Best wishes

I flashed to the newest build and now nothing shows up in my storage card....on the phone and through device center. I tried reverting back to the previous build, but still nothing is there. When I plug it in to device center, the storage card is recognized and it says that it does have memory used on it, but there are no files to be seen in the explorer on the phone and on the device center. Any help please?

anytime you flash, you are suppose to remove the sd card cause it wipes out everything on the phone and card, sorry to say but your stuff you had on your sd card is gone.
Out of everytime I have flashed roms on a phone, this has never happened. The thing is that the sd card still says it's half full which shows me there is still data, but I just can't see it.

Ive never seen that flashing deletes files on sd, too and i flashed a lot of times, always with sd- and sim card in the TP.... Try to rescue data on the card with Norton Utilities ... i ve had good experiece with sd cards from a camera that i could save the data on it. Did you try progs like pocket mechanic?

I tried some of those tools and other recovery tools as well and nothing. Anyone else have anymore information on this?
I think you get the disappearing card when you have mis-matching FAT tables (it's happened to me before). I suspect that you had a growing problem and that the flash was just a coincidence and not the cause. You should try the demo version of Wizcode Scandisk and see if it can fix the issue. The also have a data recovery app, but that could be more trouble than it's worth (I think it recovers files but not file names-sounds like hell to me, lol).
Thanks, I'll give it a shot and if that doesn't work then I guess I will just format it
okay, so i've found myself in a bit of a pickle. Recently I've been running the CM7 nightly's, but today I tried out the RoyalGinger rom and I believe it either corrupted my SD card or it's blocking my SD card from being used/read.
Tried several times to reformat it but each time it said 'checking SD card', but the weird thing is I have an active wireless connection, but I'm not getting texts. I can download from market, get on Facebook, etc, but my texts won't come in until I reboot the phone. A few times I booted it up and it wouldn't allow me to even see my homescreen because it'd pop up with EVERY app force closing (including google services, framework, etc), I was able to get back to my homescreen by clearing by Dalvik Cache luckily, however I'm still unable to do most anything. I went in to wipe/restore but it says cannot find SD card, directory invalid, cannot mount, etc.
Is there a way to reformat my SD card through terminal? If so could I get the code procedure for it? or anyone have any ideas other than picking up a new micro (which isn't a big deal but I'm strapped on money til Friday) but i'd still prefer to know that it's JUST my SD card and not my phone memory. Anyone? Anyone? Beuler? Beuler? Thanks in advance. I'm really sorry if I posted this in the wrong section, but c'mon, everyone gets one.
Ok so do u have a stock backup rom? Ide say go to rom manager and go to recovery and whipe etc.. Then install that stock back on it.....And can ur sd card even read at all? Just get any.file manager and check your sd.

I think I have a backup rom of CM6, but not an actual android stock rom. It won't allow me because it says 'must have an SD card inserted' then it says must have clockwork mod recovery installed, which I do, the current version. Now that it says that I'm afraid to boot my phone into recovery, and I can't really tell if my SD card will read. I was able to use my file manager and the entire SD folder is blank.
ten minutes later: still boots into recovery, none of my backups are available on it. I was thinking about downloading a rom from the phone and trying that way, but I don't know if it'd save to the (apparently unreadable) SD card.
Ok try this...... Find out what recovery you use 3.0.0.5 or the normal 2.5.1.4 for froyo then download a rom thats the same recovery as the one u have on it right now...... If its the same as your cyanogenmod 6 then install that from the recovery manually!!!
if its not then download a rom that is and make sure you use a file manager to see if the download sticks in your sdcard. And if it doesnt stick then......your problem sir might be a corrupted sdcard, or a phone that cant read your sd.
Hope its not either or, so give it a shot.....

It sounds like he doesn't have access to his sdcard. It doesn't matter how many backups you make if that's the case...
If you happen to have a sdcard reader or a microsd usb adapter you could format it in windows, copy the files you need, and start again. Also did you try connecting to your pc and seeing if it's readable that way? You can format the card if your pc recognizes it. If you have adb set up you can push the recovery image to the phone without a sdcard. But once again without a working sdcard you won't be able to flash a new rom.
Hey guys I'm pretty sure it's just my SD card. I tried saving an image, just to test it and it says 'an SD card is required to download images.bin', so I'm HOPING it's just my SD Card, however my notifications are working properly so I can at least deal with it til friday, if it IS my SD card reader in the phone, well... I have a plan for that, however due to already technically breaking that I shouldn't go into it. Thanks to you guys for taking the time to post and if you know anything else that might help me I'd gladly accept it.

Hi, I have a reader on my laptop but not the adapter, so I can't tell and yes, you were right, I can't see any of my backups (which I have my stock, then cm6 and cm7) so I either need to find an adapter or get a new SD card. luckily I pulled all of my camera images off my phone last night when I put the new rom .zip on the phone sd, so I'm not really worried about 'losing' anything as long as I get my phone working back in proper condition.
Well that happened to me before as well.. All i did was replace sd cards lets the phone do its thing flash a different rom like CM6 or CM7 and then once replaced i got the adapter for my old sd card reformatted through windows and put it right back in and it worked.. So try that?
Ill have to. Thanks a lot guys I do appreciate any comments and suggestions and ill be picking up a new sd later thia week to fix it but can amyone recommend a good brand sd to pick up? the apparently failed one was a samsung 8gb

Something similar happened to me. Your SD card likely has a bad or corrupted file. I used Win7 to copy over what I could to a folder in my PC. The Win7 automatically refused to copy over the corrupted files while carrying over everything else. In XP, your file transfer stops and you have to try again to ensure you have everything that's not corrupted transferred over.
After copying, I just went ahead and formatted the SD to FAT32, transferred everything back, installed on my phone, and voila.
Go into recovery and partition the card. You'll lose everything on it but it should be useable after that

So I finally got the courage to flash a rom after dealing with an extremely sluggish Vibrant for over a year. I flashed the rom and everything was good, then I tried to get all my music on the phone. I couldn't get it on the external 16gb sd card so I figured I needed to format the card. I went into settings and It only gave me the option to format one of them, under SD card "format" wasn't even selectable. So I format the one I could and now notice a lot of missing folders. All that is left is albumthumbs, android, dcim, lost.dir, external_sd.
I'm not sure what I deleted but the phone still works fine.
What do you recommend I do? Should I odin back to stock and then load it again?
U should flash rom again

You could also connect your phone into mass storage mode to the computer and attempt a recovery using one of the many available tools if you had important information on the internal SD.
Cheers,
Stefan.
Problem when I reboot my phone the internal SD is not available only the external micro-SD. I remove the micro-SD and then I can see my internal SD. I am beginning to think my Infuse is on it's last leg. Good thing I can upgrade on 1st January.
I have tried Wipe Cache Partition and Advanced/Wipe Dalvik Cache. No help. This is the second time, thought I had it fixed by returning to stock then back to CM10 4.2 all was well then I saw a post about the new camera that I didn't have yet so I flashed it. Now I am back to SD problem.
If anyone has an idea what is causing this, other than me. I would greatly appreciate it.
Does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix or advise on new phone to get?
Thank you!

Also I noticed that the date time stamp on microSD says 31 Dec 69
The above is the same with it working or with it not so thats not the problem and it doesn't help to solve it.
I have found that as long as I don't have to restart my phone when it is working it will remain working. If I think I have a reason to reboot I must make sure I really want to do this.
As the work to get it straight involves remove micro-SD, wipe/format reinstall of ROM and GApps and then restore enough to edit build.prop for tweaking lockscreen powerdown install micro-SD then powerup to restore rest of the apps.
If anyone knows what might be causing this I would really appreciate it. Even if you could point me to the log file to look at that might give me a clue that would be very nice.

If it works with out microsd just don't use one. 14 gigs is plenty. Otherwise maybe format the microsd? Or try a full stock wipe and see if it all comes back.

cpio I believe means copy in and out.
Since phone works without micro-sd and fails with it try a new micro sd or a different rom.
As for the date you mentioned, it is not unusual to find files with dates that are years in the past. Upgrade? If you are staying with AT&T pick 3-5 phones from their website that based on specs and price meet you needs and spend some hands on time with each. No one can make a better decision as to your next phone than you. Well, maybe bigjoe could...

your post is the closest example to the SAME problem i am having so i will see if we are experiencing the same thing.
Im running Scott's 4.2.1 Unofficial CM10 - 12/02 build and ever since the 11/30 build, my internal ~14GB sdcard (called USB Storage when i look under system settings / storage) will not mount. the 2GB "internal" Storage and my 64GB External are always visible.
whats strange, is that when i reboot into recovery, i can still get all the data in this "sdcard" partition, it just will not mount when booted.
When i 1st boot from a new flash, its there, but after a reboot (and every reboot after that) it shows for a split-second, then disappears.
I come into this thread and seen it may have something to do with my External SD, i tried it removing the External SD, rebooted, and sure enough, it brought back my internal SD.
i shut down, re-inserted my External SD and powered up, and the USB Storage did NOT disappear but i cant leave well enough alone, so I rebooted 1 more time... POOF... USB Storage GONE....
How could the External SD have such an impact on the mounting of the Internal SD?
In Scott's thread he mentions that external (micro) sd should be removed before flashing the rom... don't know if that is the case, just sayin'.

I have flashed & reflashed with and without, no change. I have reformatted the External SD, no change.
I think i have isolated the issue to the physical presense if the External SD, but this is not an issue with the 11/4 build. I just go back to 4.1.2 till the next release
Downgrading back to 11/04 now
I am downgrading to see if that fixes it will let you know. Did it work for you?
Some one had a point. How is it not available? No media can be seen. Or is it non existent in root explorer. PR under system settings> storage.
If its the first it might be a .nomedia file in the root directory.

After downgrading back to 4.1.2 of CM10 my problem goes away. Another thing that I noticed is that the default APN's are now editable and I can delete them as well. While on 4.2 the only thing I could do was create a new one and set it to be the one in use. I guess part of the system is read only. Trying to save us from messing something up.

Well for me, not available means not mounted & unmounable, the sdcard directory can be seen, but it empty through root explorer.
the "other way in" through Storage/Sdcard0 shows the dame, nothing, REMOVE the external SD, the internal SD (called USB Storage in settings/storage) Mounts in reboot. .nomedia is not the issue as when the External SD is present, i can play media (from the External SD, but the camera and other apps that rely on the internal SD for storage, can not function.
When i reboot into recovery, i can see and access all the files (typically where the flashable files reside when i drag them over from my PC) both internal and external, and when i reboot, the MOMENT the unlock screen appears i dash over to settings/storage and the internal drive appears, but collapses in a less then a second. (as unmounted)

yes, returning to the 11/4 (4.1.2) ROM I do not experience this issue.
I tried scott.hart.bti 4.2.1 12/11
Went up to try 4.2.1 12/11 - No difference - The only thing I was able to do in this one was delete unused APN and edit save new one.
Wish I knew how to program and spot the differences in the code somewhere. I'd really like to stay on 4.2.1 but without my micro-SD it seems like a waste.
I have not had issues with 12/12, thought I'd share my process: wipe data/factory, wipe cache, wipe dalvik (advanced), format system (mounts and storage), install ROM, wipe dalvik, install Scott's gapps, reboot. I also don't auto restore apps. There are still compatibility issues with some apps and 4.2
hiya i wonder if any1 can help!
basically my phone was telling me my sd card had been removed (no big deal i thought, this seems to happen to my phone from time to time since running this ROM (bruce2728's cm10)).
i can usually either remove the sd card and put back in, or the same with the battery to get it working again. but no matter how many times i try it wont work. also when using this ROM (and before this problem) every time that i try to enter storage from the settings menu, settings force closes.
so completely out of ideas i tried doing a wipe and trying again. now u see im fairly new to all this and that seems to get touted as a way to fix some things, so i thought id give it a go.
but now my phone wont get past the white with green HTC logo, its been sat like that for about an hour! and in recovery it just says that it cannot mount sd card!!
i feel im firmly up **** creek. is there any way to fix this? perhaps a way to flash a ROM without using sd card to a phone that wont boot up?
i feel i might need to flash a new bootanimation.img as i changed this from the default in the ROM, could i also do this without an sd card or a phone that wont get past HTC logo?
i hope there is someone out there that can help!
thank you in advance,
Max

I'm assuming you've tried pulling the battery, unseating the sd card, reseating it, putting battery back, and going to recovery right?
If that doesn't work I'd suggest trying to read the sd in card in a PC... is it readable there?
All in all you can get to recovery so you arent that bad off, just need to figure out what's up with the SD.
Yes I can view my SD card on both my PC and my tablet :/ but when I boot into 4ext it says problem mounting SD card, may take longer without. Then when 4ext loads I can't manually mount SD or browse for zip file. You think this is more likely a hardware issue with my sensation?

On your PC, copy all your files off your SD card, format your SD card (makes sure the filesystem is set to fat32), and then just put 1 file on it, a ROM, and see if the recovery detects it. If that doesn't work then you can always try using a different SD card.

This isn't part of your SD card problem. This was a ROM bug that was fixed in the Jan 9th update. Any use of the storage menu from the settings on the late December to Jan 6th builds caused a FC.
So if you are using one of those builds, don't factor in th esettings FC in your diagnosis of the problem.
SD card ejections were also an issue on the Dec 21 - Jan 3rd builds if I recall correctly. I had one day where the SD card would just unmount and refused to remount. It was a problem experienced by only a handful of people and seemed to be very limited. Though if you can't mount in recovery than that's probably not the issue.
Also, you said you could press the SD card into the slot and it mounted for a second...
2 things on that note.
First, your SD card might be the problem. Maybe the contacts are worn out. Take a lcose look at it and make sure it looks okay. No corrosion, etc...
Second, the metal housing around the SD card...that can be mashed in slightly to put more pressure on the card. Take the card out and press the middle of that housing in. It could create enough force to hold the card in more securely. Be VERY careful with this option though.
Also, did you make sure another SD card got the same problem? If another card works, then your card is just f'ed.

Find the exact rom you were on and take the boot IMG out of it. Wipe your data and cache and then boot to fastboot. With the boot.IMG
In your adb folder do fastboot boot boot.IMG and see if it boots into the rom.
