[Q] Soft brick or Hard brick - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

vzw sg3 rooted, unlocked with cwm installed. I was trying to flash synergy backup plan for IMEI and now the phone is stuck in download mode. Pulling the battery does nothing, boots back up into download mode. Connected phone to comp and tried to oden a stock rom and cannot navigate to the file image. The file path in odin has PDA File(*.tar,*.md5,*,smd,*.gz,*.tgz) locked in and cannot remove.

Of the phone boots into download mode then you should be able to odin it.
Have you tried rebooting the computer first, and then reconnect the phone?

One thing that has worked for me in the past is use Odin to flash CWM. Then pull the battery re-insert it do the 3 button boot and hopefully your back in recovery.
Also I don't believe Odin is .zip friendly read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840030 if you want to go back to stock rooted.

I've rebooted comp pulled battery, but every time i go into odin and try to load the image file it disappers from the folder and that tar file i posted is locked into odin's file path. That has to be why my image file is disappering from the rom folder, but i know of no way to clear that tar file out. Tks for the reply i need all the info i can find.

I owe you big time kind sir, i used that link and i'm back up and running, thank you, thank you, thank you. :good:

Glad it worked! We really don't have a reason to backup the imei anymore there is a program out that will write your imei back to your phone if your phone ever looses it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1867442 I guess it is nice to have a backup plan if you are not close to a computer when flashing a new rom.

That the hard way. That is last resort. The terminal nvbackup/nvrestore is much easier and that program don't work everytime for everybody. Sometimes does not see com port.

Is this still being packaged Blu? I could really use a working odin tar right now... accidentally soft bricked trying to use a recovery.tar to get rid of ClockworkMod and get back to a stock recovery.

Just packed now sorry. You flashed the one from the restoring stock recovery thread? What was your method of flashing it? Does it boot up at all or stick at the samsung boot screen? (i packaged that one and am curious as I heard reports of it working)
Download link: still uploading
Pit file attached in case you need it (unrar it first)
I do not guarantee that this will work, all I did was tar the files and upload them (and edit the pit). I did not trim the datafs.rfs file due to lack of ability to test it. Flash AT YOUR OWN RISK! so If this fails you now own a fancy brick!
edit:Not posting the tar yet for privacy of ayoteddy and potentially his logins to websites. The data wasn't wiped and has all his info, waiting for a clean one.
damn those files shouldnt contain any data since i had factory wiped just before pulling those images. *shrug* there might be a more in-depth way to clear all data
anyways im sure we can have a functional odin image with only the following files included
zImage
modem.bin
factoryfs.rfs
Recovery.bin
Param.lfs
i doubt anybody will be messing with anything else in their file sys but that should be able to recovery anybody from a soft brick.
Edit: Also dis-include the sbl and boot.bin as it could be very dangerous overwriting those files.. not really necessary anyhow.
I'm actually stuck at the black screen with a phone and a computer with a yellow triangle in the middle. Yeah, I was trying to flash a stock recovery from the stock recovery thread. Got a little desperate and tried to flash the recovery tarred for Odin, and that sent me to where I am now. I appreciate all your hard work guys, and have learned my lesson not to flash unless there's a lot of backups handy ;]
I'll try the pit, not sure if I may need more or not, you guys probably know better than me.
EDIT: as I am not skilled in using Odin and do not wish to cause further damage to my phone, I will await instructions from you guys/ayoteddy's image.

What did you do while flashing it? What boxes did you tick? Where did you put the tar, etc
@ ayoteddy alright i'll just make one from those, only reason i was including cache before is I heard its where permissions were stored though as you said I'm sure those files work fine
Here it is:
Odin + pit: attached
sk4g_stock.tar.md5.rar: Click here
UNRAR the tar first (i didn't want to trim factoryfs.rfs due to unability to test so I compressed it instead)
Put the extracted sk4g.tar.md5 in the pda slot
make sure ONLY AUTO-REBOOT is checked (unless you are re-partitioning, then use re-partition and the pit file)
1. open odin with phone not connected yet
2. boot in to download mode using Trackpad+Vol down then power (thanks sduvick)
3. connect phone to pc
4. sk4g_stock.tar.md5 in pda slot
5. double check that only auto-reboot is checked (and the pda you selected of course)
6. Click flash
Disclaimer: Flash at your own risk, if you get bricked I am not liable.
The odin tar includes
factoryfs.rfs
modem.bin
param.lfs
recovery.bin
zImage
Thanks blu, @sduvick would prolly be the first to test cause he was waitng for this.. hope everything works out for em
He also figured out how to get into downlode mode ..
Trackpad+Vol down then power

I'm not entirely sure what I did. I think I put the recovery.tar.md5 in the wrong place. anyways, I'm back out of bricked, and now just waiting for a working stock restore tar to get back to stock.
EDIT: just saw the tar, downloading now, will test in around 10 min when the file is downloaded.

Did you try my one click stock in the same post?
Yeah, I didn't have the same root method, so that didn't get rid of Clockwork for me.
First try at flashing failed almost at the end, at recovery.bin if I'm not mistaken. I'm trying to run it again.
EDIT: Failed again, at recovery.bin

attach the pit and re-partition. then flash the tar
sduvick wanna post the steps you used?
I can actually give steps based on what you have for symptoms (too much experimenting for me haha)
If you have the "soft brick," that is the small phone and computer icons, just connect to Odin and flash the full image.
Black screen, no logo.
1. Get into download mode by using VolDown+Touchpad+Power
2. flash full sk4g.tar.md5 as posted.
logo only
1. Download mode
2. Flash full package
Can't flash recovery/boot/sbl
1. Download mode
2. use PIT only, run with repartition checked
3. reboot/reDownload mode
4. run the full image in Odin.
Anything else
1. Download mode
2. Full tar.md5 flash in Odin
3. Ask if it doesn't work

SOLVED PROBLEM [Help] Infuse 3.6 With Entropy Softbrick.

Hi all, after successfully flashing aeon gears boot animation with clockwork mod from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1656709 I then attempted to flash the Aeonised Forrest theme also from that same thread. This was my first attempt at flash a custom theme and as far as I am aware Entropy's kernel supports custom themes? Was it wrong to use CWM to flash the theme, according to CWM after the flash things went well however after rebooting I am stuck in a boot loop. Thinking of trying one click back to stock with this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524081 Any ideas what went wrong? Please note that Clockwork Recovery and Download mode both still work. Any suggestions how to do it the right way would be appreciated.
Thanks Much

Unless I missed the bus...which I do a lot, so I just walk...LOL
Evergreen Theme Theme for AEON ROM....not stock...?
do you have driver loaded on your pc?, There are drivers for Infuse on the super infuse page, see my links...
or try diff usb port or cable...or pc...
does it ask for drivers for heimdall? which those are different drivers than odin...
if you want those nice, beautiful themes that mikig make...flash Aeon, then flash the themes...kk
but the Super Infuse page has all the ROM/tools/drivers you need for the Infuse...the individual that maints that page is just a loser, but dont tell him, he is dork with an additude...ok
see "My links" in red...go there if you need anything else for you infuse...kk
I have a copy of ODIN with a few files in it not sure if they are useful? Files are: PHONE_UCKD5.tar.md5, infuse.pit, PDA_UCKD5.tar.md5
Will any of those fix my boot loop? Flashing a theme shouldn't permanently brick me right?

Hold the power button down for a little while. The phone may go into a screen w/ an image of Phone-!-PC. Reset Odin and restart from there. It should work then. If not, reset Odin and put the phone in download mode again.

A good while ago I flashed my phone with the Heimdall method provided by your one click to stock thread for GB. I then rooted my phone after flashing Entropy's Daily Driver, I being rather dumb then tried to flash one of the Aeon themes with CWM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1656709 The Forest theme from that thread. My phone then decied to go into a boot loop. I am now attempting to recover with ODIN but i think it's stuck? It seems to be stuck at SetupConnection message in ODIN. I was hoping you could offer some advince on how to unbrick myself.

Odin and heimdall uses different device recognition drivers.
I've not used Odin for over 9 months so I can't offer advice there. Jscott30 has more experience with Odin.
If you want, you can restore your phone using the heimdall 1 click uclb3 I put together.
Flash in download mode. It will restore your phone if used correctly.
If you want to try, before flashing anything else, try first booting into recovery using the three finger techniques into cwm and flash aeon or another MUF.
Recovery may still work.

ODIN WORKED!!!!!
Now all good Although I think my data was wiped off
However I had no custom roms on my SD to flash and could only boot in to DL mode and CWM neither were of use .
At the very least now that I'm all clear i might flash Aeon rom.

Good luck with everything. Make sure to click the "Thanks" button on everyone that helped you out.
One thing you should take away from this experience is to make sure you do a NANDROID BACKUP before flashing ANYTHING in CWM.
Learn how to get into CWM using the 3-finger method, too. It can come in handy.

[Q]Unable to root my device from recovery

I Am unable to mount system or cache either and also i cant flash certain files from my CWM recovery I think it is because I forgot to root my device before flashing the CWM from stock recovery. Now I can't do nandroid backup or root the device either i need help. The data speed is too slow at my home I'll not be able to download stock rom (it would take days to download)... Is there any way??

Recovery Mode doesn't need root to function. Try the Universal GB Root package and tell me what happens, a bit more information would be helpful, like, if an error shows, or something like that...
EDIT: OH! I just realized what is happening! You are using CWM with a Stock ROM that you want to root, right? Well, CWM does NOT support .EFS file systems. It can't mount the /system/ partition to write on it. When you install a custom ROM with it, it re-formats the system partition to EXT4. So, you can't use both a Stock ROM and CWM. They do not support each other. You need to flash a custom ROM. Or use the Stock Recovery to flash the Root Zip.

For ODIN Flashing Tool:

- Launch ODIN on your system. In that look under ID:COM section. The section will turn to yellow once the device is connected and detected.

Flash the latest @Android-Andi Philz Touch or TWRP recovery and that should solve the problem (I recommend flashing the recovery with Odin or Heimdall.) Status 7 error usually means outdated recovery.

Well, that may have worked but before I did anything I let it charge, this is the message I got though: "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
How should I go about this? I cannot do anything in Kies because the P3113 won't turn on. Whenever I plug it in to the PC if makes the sound of connecting, then disconnecting over and over again.

Since the Cyanogenmod Rom failed flashing I tried to flash the stock firmware using Odin v.1.83 (Odin v3.09 and v3.07 wouldn't open) in order to get a Rom, then I tried to re-root it using v1.83, but it died when I was trying to. So, I decided to charge it and that's what happened. At least that's what I remember. My USB connector works but doesn't charge when connected to the PC, that's why it died. Other than that I do not believe anything else was done to it.

OK, that makes more sense. If your device died during installation that will happen. If I use Odin, I usually use v1.85, but I have found Heimdall to be more stable and consistent. Can you boot into download mode?
Edit: also, what version of windows are you running?

There have been known problem using Odin on Windows 8, but I've done it multiple times. (I had kies installed if it makes any difference)
Anyway, do you have a Linux computer laying around somewhere? Depending on what happened during I installation, one can be used to maybe trip the device into a bootloop and then from there you can boot into recovery and flash a ROM. (I had to do this with my S2 after a power glitch while using Odin.) Odin isn't needed to root the tab. All you have to do us use Odin or Heimdall to flash a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP) and then flash SuperSU.zip in recovery.

I do not have a Linux machine anywhere.. Would that be the only way to fix it?

Not necessarily but it was just what I used and what worked. Does Odin detect the device on the firmware upgrade encountered an error screen?

What do you mean by that? Odin shows this when I plug it in: http://prntscr.com/44yzf2
Nothing looks out of the ordinary.

Odin does detect the device. So you SHOULD be able to go to www.samfirmware.com , click on "Firmware Database" and select the options in the drop down boxes for your tablet. Download the zip file (you'll need a sammobile account) and then extract the zip file. You should have a tar.md5 or a tar file that you can flash in Odin. Make sure your tab is charged and you run Odin as admin. After you flash that, reboot into recovery (will be stock recovery) and do a factory reset and wipe cache. Now you should be able to reboot into stock android (with TouchWIZ of course). To root from here, use Odin to flash latest @Android-Andi TWRP recovery and the flash @Chainfire's SuperSU.zip and you'll be rooted!
As always, I am not responsible for what happens to your device. Doing this will raise your flash counter and void your warranty, which is probably void already if you flashed anything before.

Well, that partially worked. It does not show that anymore and it shows the Charging animation, but I can not boot into Odin/Download mode, or Recovery mode.

That is quite weird. I have done the same thing at least 2 or 3 times. Try going to https://builds.casual-dev.com/jodin3/ Make sure you plug in your device before loading the above page. Your device should be detected when the page loads. In PDA put the latest TWRP tar file. Click start. It will say something like it needs a pit file and will reboot to find it. Click OK. It might fail but thats fine. Unplug your device. It will reboot and should show a bootloop. Now you should be able to reboot into recovery. If not, you might have to JTag but I don't know. For future reference, if a ROM is bootlooping, don't flash stock in Odin. Just do a full wipe and reflash the ROM and that should fix it.

EDIT: if the tab died during installation of an important file, it can ruin the device. www.mobiletechvideos.com does have JTAG service that can be used as a last resort. It costs around 50 US Dollars.

So you mean you redownloaded the firmware from sammobile and flashed with Odin or what? I couldn't figure out exactly what you meant. Glad to hear your tab is working again!

So it must have been a bad download then. You used Odin v1.87 or what? Also, you should add [SOLVED] to the thread title.

Soft bricked S6- Run out of options

My S6 only goes into odin/download mode, I have tried multiple times trying to flash the stock rom using different versions of odin and different versions of the stock rom just to be sure. I never rooted the phone but I read that you dont need to be rooted or in debugging mode to use odin. Everytime I have used odin it stops after nand write start. I have tried to root if using cf auto root but that failed as well. I have tried renaming the tar.md5 into just tar and extracting the files (never once found hidden.img though), recompiled them to make new tar files and tried booting them individually but still no luck. I really have no idea what I am doing wrong or why this phone will not flash the stock firmware. Even smart switch wont work, so I cant go into recovery mode to manually wipe the phone. The model number is the G920W8.
Any help or new ideas would be appreciated.
restore stock and take it back to the store. i had the same problem too. new one coming soon.

That's all I've been trying to do. Just restore the stock firmware. My problem is that it won't restore to stock. Neither through Odin or smart switch.
Also my battery does not charge, that was the original problem.

try to flash android 5.1.1. for your phone model if you can get into twrp. do a full phone wipe. and a factory restore. then flash android 5.1.1 thru odin. you should be good to go. if you are still having boot loops let the phone die completely and wait for 10 min to 15 min. you may need to do this few times but i did this and it works for me let my know what happens. ( you might need to stay in download mode until the phone dies)
some times the answer is more simple as expected, try another usb port, or maybe another computer ...
