EDIT: Here is the problem http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5j8rUklR-U
I can understand Samsung's motivation to block this. Even though it seems like a somewhat trivial app to this audience, in the marketplace it would be positioned as a differentiator, and you can be confident that at least part of the idea is to blunt the impact of Siri on Samsung sales (and there's no need to debate differences between Siri, S Voice, the eventual advent of Majel, etc - just commenting on today's motivation for Samsung to keep this restricted to S3).
Another possibility: Vlingo has been evolving their product, and if you go to the Play Store you'll find the Vlingo labs version - which is essentially the same as S Voice with a smaller "vocabulary" of functions you can invoke. It really appears that they're gearing up this new version of Vlingo for ALL phones, but my guess is that they have an agreement in place with Samsung to hold off for a while so the S3 can enjoy having this functionality exclusively at first. Also possible that Samsung and Vlingo have a licensing agreement that restricts the phones that the app runs on for some period of time.
I can easily imagine business execs at Samsung and at Vlingo getting more than a bit stressed over this...

YEP! Sadly, I'm glad I'm not the only one lol so it must be a problem with the app. The following thread mentions maybe it is because of touchwiz apps or something that other phones do not have on them, idk I'm at work so I'm half paying attention to the threads, I just want it to work!

No problem with the app. I'm running the modded version (posted on one of these S Voice threads) that doesn't require modding build.prop -- works perfectly. I send text messages, emails, check the weather and just posted to FB. Re: FB - I do NOT have the app installed right now (older version ate battery - no idea about 1.9 yet - may try later). Anyway -- I tried it this way: I told S Voice: "update Facebook". It then show the FB login dialog and noted that I had to be logged in so that it could update FB. I filled in username / pswd, and it's been working fine ever since then. Just needed login credentials.
Try just saying "update Facebook" the first time, it should prompt for credentials, and then remember them for future use.
EDIT: also just logged into Twitter the same way -- said, "Tweet" and it prompted me for twitter credentials. Now that it's got them, I'm good to go. Almost too easy!

New update below – Simsimi is much better than the boring Siri, ok that is a strong statement but you will understand why after using it. If you download Simsimi, the robot chatting app onto your Android or iOS device, we can tell you that you will have some fun.
Siri is good, but in our eyes it is boring, it gives you some cool features like reminders, ask a few questions that cannot be answered etc, but with Simsimi it is fun and it learns. Intelligence is where this is at, and the art of artificial intelligence conversation will have you in fits of laughter at some of the replies.
If you download this app, being it on Android or the iPhone, send Simsimi a text or communicate via PC, and you will get a response very quickly indeed, it scans automatically for related conversations via its huge database, it will give you answers that are either very funny, or relevant.
This app learns, and this is all down to all the followers using it, in a nutshell it evolves. The application also allows you to turn on and off the bad expression filter; advance is the real word here.
I do not need to say anymore than we already have, try the Simsimi app out, its fun, it is clever and it is learning.

ok, i got it. but i still don't worry about this. milions people use this app and I don't see someone said their information was stolen. this app is rated 5-star on google play. and listed on top free app. thanks
Do whatever you want, you're all old enough to know what you're doing (well, almost) but i'm not touching this app with a ten feet pole.
According to the privacy policy this application can collect just about every bit of info on your phone that ids you not even including the mentioned CC info . Email, phone number, imei being just some of them AND they can share this info with 3rd parties. I only made it though the first paragraph.
It's your choices to install and accept the policies but it should be clear what your accepting.
I've always said if you read any EULA you wouldn't accept it. This is above and beyond that.
Part of my distaste is because I miss the dedicated search button on newer phones (and long press for voice search), but in any case I just don't see the point of Google Now.
1) It's awful at answering questions. I've asked questions in plain english maybe a couple dozen times and almost every time the result has been a simple web search. Not a "card" with an answer on it, which, as far as I can gather, is the point. The only times I've gotten the card were for questions I was only asking to see what it CAN do, since it CAN'T do anything that seems to be useful.
2) The simple answers it can provide are much easier to find in a dedicated app. If I want to know the weather, I look at a widget or open a weather app. If I want to know what's on my agenda, I look at a widget or open the calendar app. I'm not going to open Google Now and see if it happens to have a card for the specific information I want. And the general things it does are all important enough that I have widgets for them that I can see at a glance without opening Google Now.
The only thing it's been able to "do" other than this is simple definitions of words, which I suppose is a little easier than doing a web search, but kind of "meh."
The swiping up from home button thing doesn't seem like it should be THE way to see what Google Now wants to tell you. The passive nature means none of it is immediately pertinent information, yet you have to take action to see it. A widget would make a LOT more sense. As it is, I don't ever find myself thinking "I wonder if there's any random, currently unimportant information I'd like to see." And I'm very rarely in a situation where I don't feel completely ridiculous talking to my phone.
Who uses this thing? Why?

Voice search is a good marketing thingy. It doesnt help me to search things in google the way i do, for example some problems during application developent.
You may not be using it right. Though, keep in mind that it's targeted towards busy people as a means of efficient and accessible information. I believe that the main purpose of google now is to integrate into your agenda to give you relevant information
(ie. checking your destination, route, and traffic, and calculating that you need to leave in xx minutes to arrive at your destination on time)
I don't really see google now as a siri copy, as it doesn't give mediocre and/or witty answers.
You'll probably still use google search a lot. Google now is meant more as a location-based assistant than a siri clone.
It does cards for things like locations, famous people, weather, alarms, definitions, emails, etc.
Yeah, I'm not sure I like siri or Google now. Its a cool concept but sometimes I feel like I have to yell at the phone so it understands me ha
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda app-developers app
IMHO Google Now (and Siri) would be much more useful if voice recognition was improved and answer process snappier.
Indeed, it could be much faster to talk to your phone than navigating through your apps. Besides, Google Now is way smarter than Siri as it tries to guess what information you need before you ask for it. Analysing external information and making it useful should be fully exploited.
Voice assistant is a road on which I think we should make further progress. Google is doing a great job as we can see with the off-line voice recognition.
However I agree with you that Google Now can be useless if the user only uses it to get information you can get by looking at your widgets.. Maybe if it has a deeper integration on the phone, it would be better.
Even if they worked perfectly o would not use them they are a novalty lol fun to show off but just not useful in the real world.

We have to face evolution of search engines, if we like it or not. Searching in web can't stay the way it is forever. We are about to implement AI to search engines, so that computer understands what we are looking for and crawls through web, while we would be working. Potentially new users wouldn't need to "learn" to google in order to find information efficiently.

To be perfectly honest I fail to grasp the whole talk-control allure. I mean seriously, typing is less tiresome, cleaner, quieter and frankly, more private. The one time I actually tested voice control, I felt like a douche. -and- I was alone in my room. Imagine doing it on the middle of the street.
Dedicated widgets, as you said, are the best way to go for effectiveness. Which gets me wondering, how worried should we be that Google sees voice control as "the future"?

Google isn't like Microsoft, who gives consumers reactionary, low-par software and features. If voice control turns out to not be "the future", then Google will realize it and move away from it.
Seriously, when was the last time that you looked at a Google product and thought to yourself, "man this sucks"? At least, that never happened to me. I'm actually looking into modifying my China N12 tablet to have Google Now in ICS.

Like I said, most of the time I feel like an idiot talking to the phone. The only time I regularly use it is "navigate to ..." when I'm in the car. One button press (and I know exactly where that button is) and I have directions to where I'm going. Until ICS.

Yeah, Google has definitely shown they are totally willing to dump something if it turns out not to be the next thing. Google Wave anyone? I bet Larry Page is a pretty decent poker player. One of the biggest problems people have is not folding because they have so much invested, even when they can't win.
Hi there!
In the last few weeks I developed a little toy which might especially be interesting for developers or "hackers". And since most of the users here are at least technically interested, I found that this forum might be the right place to introduce this app.

Will this app work with drag racing?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Why don't you try out yourself? However, I checked out Drag Racing and unfourtunately it seems like that game at least does not store money via Shared Preferences.
Anyway, I want to state again that this app is rather developed for scientific purposes and for those who are just curious. I think that quite a lot games unfourtunately do not use Android's Shared Preferences to store relevant data. Try it for such purpose, but I do not want to make any promises. I just emphasized that point in the hope of getting a little more attention, but people do not seem to be that interested in that app anyway.
Push again.
... and maybe once again. :/
Push once again. Can't believe, that people acually rate this app bad (two stars) because it needs root access! What the ****... However, I do not believe that it was someone from this forum. But anyway - kind of makes me angry, haha. :/

Thank you, guys. That were finally some constructive and nice comments...
Unfourtunately, the majority of Android users, however, seems to be dumb. I just received another two comments. They both rated the app one star.

"f*cken root"
Well, thats some very constructive feedback, I love it. :/ Stupid idiots.

users without shouldnt even have the posibility to rate such apps (wich need root to install)
as they can't try it why they should have a opinion?
True words. But what am I supposed to do else but checking if the app gets root access at the start and displaying an error if it doesn't? Unfourtunately, there is no option at the developer console to disable the download for unrooted phones. :/
But thanks for feedback.
Thank you very much for building this app - I thought it was just what I was looking for! However I have a problem although I'm not sure its necessarily the app's problem. Basically I'm editing the preferences for a live wallpaper which looks in a folder for photos to display. Using your app I can open the preferences file and edit the string relating to the path of the folder. However it has no effect on the app - regardless of whether I open, restart or manipulate the app - all that happens is the preference file gets overwritten with the previous values. Its almost as if the live wallpaper isn't doing a getpreferences call?
Hi privatesam. This might be too late to answer, but anyway... Well, I have no idea what could be the matter here. I would make sure that the wallpaper app is not running in the background. I don't know if that helps. I hope so.
Well, friends, I made a small update this sunday. Basically, I just improved the UI a little bit. And - to be honest - I included another monetization method than AdMob, since my income was that bad with those AdMob banners (eCPM at around 0,05 $...) and I put a lot of work into this app. I'm sorry... I hope, you are not mad at me. I just wanted to give it a try (for those being interested, this ad network is called StartApp Mod Edit: Link Removed. - read about it first, for example here).
Again, please don't be mad at me for trying out this more "intrusive" ad network... Most of you won't notice it anyway I guess (using AdAway).
Hi. Let's give this a push.
Toy defense 2
Hi buddy, can you tell me if or how can I use this for cheat in the Toy defense 2? I think it is imposibble, but I am LAMA thanks for response
I did a small update yesterday. I included some support/help texts and removed some intrusive advertisement due to lots of negative feedback and some false virus alerts (still using StartApp, though). And also because of the Google Play Store policy changes, of course.
A also found a video on YouTube. It does belong to me. I distance myself from its content and the shown use. It is somehow a proof, however, that my app works and how it works.
@honza.chlan:
Since no developer is forced to USE Shared Preferences, this app (Toy Defense 2) might use another way to store their settings. For example on some servers in the internet. CheatDroid does not work everywhere.
Push.
sharing my review onplay store here..
With android available as cheap as 50 bucks, dumb people are getting on the train, don't know what root is,andd blame the dev for it,ITS NOT A ROOT YOUR PHONE APP, NEITHER WORKS WITHOUT ROOT,and if you can't get these simple fkin lines in your mind, then God save the devs, BTW,hats off to dev for working, for making my gaming easier and yes it's your right to earn something you worked on by having ads and our right to block them by adaway, hehehe
FYI contributed my full thanks limit to you today, cheers
I know this isn't a new idea or question. But why isn't there a (free) appstore for xda where developers can upload their apps all in one place. Similar to what dividgiga did in his thread (found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=720944). But would have categories for more devices. Even specific ones. Could have apps, ROMs, kernels, games, mods, anything downloadable. With xda's support they could even implement a feature on the site that when a developer makes a thread and uploads his work on the forum it will give a prompt and ask if he wants it automatically uploaded to the store. I have searched for similar ideas and found that's one place where they failed. People not uploading enough items to the database. Having a prompt for it to automatically be added to the store would [in theory] fix that issue. Also this would raise awareness of the appstore and generate more users and in turn more developers wanting to add their work, another issue I've seen with other appstores. Having everything in one place would also make finding awesome things for your phone so much easier. Cause let's face it if u don't know EXACTLY what to "search" for how are you going to find it? And before someone says it, no I'm not one of the people that is too lazy to search the forum. I actually spend hours searching the forum and Google before I ask for an answer. This would just make it faster and easier. And what's the purpose of technology if not to make things easier, faster, and more efficient?
Anyways these are just my initial ideas. Have many more but I wanted to get some input on this first. Please comment with your opinion or other ideas.
$
A project like that should cost a lot, and even if someone wanted to realize it, they didn't find investors. I also think the appstore doesn't have to be completely (free). Why not to pay Rom's authors for their work...the cost of a beer from everyone downloads the rom should be enough to thank them. p.s sorry for my English
I agree but in order for xda to back it I'm pretty sure it would have to be free. (If the same rules apply as from the forum). There would definitely be a donation button though. Don't get me wrong on that. And like I said these are just basic initial ideas. By no means is my post a complete plan for an app market.

If you put it in this way, then of course it would be a successfull idea. So who should we fight to have the store?
I've just watched the introduction video...so take my "thank"
I feel like if a detailed more complete plan for this app store was wrote up and presented to xda and enough developers agreed to back it. and help develop it there would be a good chance they would agreed to implement it on their website.it's impossible to not be heard if you make enough noise and present an educated plan. sorry for the brief reply.II'm going into work right now. I will get back on later when I get off. And we can talk about this more. We need to try and get more people to comment on this thread though for sure.

I agree but in order for xda to back it I'm pretty sure it would have to be free. (If the same rules apply as from the forum). There would definitely be a donation button though. Don't get me wrong on that. And like I said these are just basic initial ideas. By no means is my post a complete plan for an app market.

As I said in a previous post. In order to be backed by xda it would have to be free (as stated in forum rules), however their would be donation buttons for people to say thanks. If developers wouldn't upload to the appstore simply because they don't get paid per-app only from donations then why would they load stuff on the xda forum? Because the same rule applies here.
See what I'm trying to say?
support the xda app market!!:good:
however, it will be cool for having a paid apps section to reward developers
Its definitely an option I'm not saying it won't happen. Like I said before make enough noise and you can't be ignored =P any other good ideas? Remember no idea is a bad idea so start brainstorming!
And definitely help try and get more people on board with the idea! The more people that back it up the better chances we will have a stable long lasting appstore and not one that'll be here one minute and gone the next!
Seems cool. Good idea!
