(Q) Aosp roms - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Are they as good as stock Android on the nexus? Do they have a tiny of broken features or are they pretty much complete fully functional roms? My main priorities are bt music streaming with audio track display and battery life, mhl, usb otg etc. . I'm an extremely heavy user. Also, how long did it take before you guys had a fully functional Aosp rom? Was the time comparable to how long it took to get it up and running on the nexus? I'm iffy on going to the nexus from the rezound because of radios and battery life, but I don't want to go to another situation like with the rezound where I can't get a oem update, and Aosp doesn't work either for months after its released. Thanks for any advice and sorry for bothering you guys with a new thread.

AOSP ROMS will be buggy because it's not made just for the phone. It will not hurt to flash and see if it will meet your DD needs.

I don't have a gs3 yet. I'm looking to upgrade. And I'm not sure if I want a gs3 or a sgn. I don't really want a sgn because of the older, slower hardware, but I'm tired of waiting on oems to give us what we pay for. I was just wondering how quickly you guys had solid jb after it was released, and if you guys think development will last at least a year and a half. I know I'm asking questions with no definite answers, I'm just tired of paying so much for these devices only to have development stop after 6 months. That's the only reason I'm considering older hardware.

Aokp rom is good
There are bugs with all AOSP ROMs. AOKP has been fairly stable though.

The only real bug I've noticed with AOKP is that I can't get the LED settings to work whatsoever. The other ROM customization options work quite well. Haven't tried any other ROM yet, but if I were you I'd either buy the Galaxy S3 and flash AOKP or wait for the Nexus 4 and ditch Verizon.

I would but I want to make them force me off of unlimited data. And as bad as I hate to say it, there coverage where I travel is second to none. I would love to get the Nexus 4, but I don't see that happening since I just wanted can't bring myself to leave vzw. They really do screw us as customers though.

I would just wait for the nexus 4 if you have the option to wait for a bit.

Aosp roms will never be as perfect as true aosp on the nexus but it's as close as you're going to get. As for bugs they are getting worked out quickly

Is the Verizon GS3 still worth getting?

I was going to get this phone when it launched but gave up due to the locked bootloader issue. Now that is resolved and there are JB rom's out as well.
But now the next Nexus is probably only 2 months away and will likely ship with Key Lime Pie. Would you get this phone today, or wait?
If you're fine with your Nexus wait for the next one Imo

I have an Evo 4G which is quite outdated at this point since it won't be getting a stable ICS/JB build.

Only for Android
Nexus devices and manufacturer devices are 2 different monsters. To ask if the SGS3 is still worth getting it really the wrong question to ask. It is the best phone out right now so how would it not be worth getting?
If the latest software is your thing which I thought was mine until I owned the GNEX and realized how many problems that phone had, then maybe wait to see what the next Nexus device has to offer. Even then, the S3 will still be one of the top dogs for Android I am sure.
The S3 is an amazing device and I am happy I made the switch to it. S3 with ICS is better then my GNEX was with JB. Even with the great software it had on it it did not fix the terrible camera, horrible screen, bad radio's and horrific battery life.

The Note is either a device you want or don't. I sure know I don't. I cannot imagine lugging that thing around with me all day.
One good thing about the Note though is it should stop a lot more people from texting and driving : )
I'd go for the SGIII, feature wise and development wise it's going to be one of the best phones for a while IMO.

The Note II is not an option
I'm just a little worried that the phone development may not be as active as the other GS3 versions or the Nexus, or that VZW might find a way to lock it down again.

If I were you I would wait for the next Nexus phone, since you know the development is gonna be huge. I really wanted to wait for the next Nexus, but I lost patience and got the S3. Having said that the S3 is a beast of a phone, I love it. But again if you can wait then the best bet would be to get the next Nexus.
I think ur safe either way, the Nexus always has great development but I had a terrible experience with the Galaxy Nexus, so I can't see going to another Nexus device. Even when it comes out I can't see it being any better than the S3, I picture it basically being the S3 with aosp android
Look at it like this, the Galaxy Nexus was still made by Samsung, as you seen from the lastest Nexus they weren't willing to give up the best features like camera and processers. I'm sure they are not going to give google the best features making the s3 obsolete. When the Nexus came out the s2 was still just as good if not better to be honest.
The software was the big difference between the Nexus and S2. Once the S3 gets Jelly Bean... Oh damn
10 million and counting
With the number of GS3's sold and the popularity of the ROM's (judged by post activity, download activity, etc) I would say that development for the GS3 will continue for some time. The hardware is certainly there to support it. With the unlocked bootloader there is nothing stopping the development from improving for at least the rest of this year if not into 2013. You will be happy with this phone or I'll eat my hat.
Yeah unless you are really after AOSP I would get the S3. It's a great phone and I highly doubt the next Nexus will have much better, if better at all, specs. The nexus phones don't tend to be next gen spec wise just newest software and pure AOSP builds.
The S3 is the best phone on VZW, has Verizon officially confirmed it will be carrying the next Nexus?
Google just released JB and only 1 phone has it officially and you're saying they're going to ship a phone in 2 months with KLP on it? Where do people get this stuff? Jesus.

[Q] Upgrade time: Prospects for S3 dev over 20 months?

I've reached my upgrade date with VZW and it's time to retire our HTC Thunderbolts. We can upgrade to the S3 for $20 or the S4 for $150 (through Amazon) each. I won't bother with a highly-subjective "which is better?" kind of question but I am curious about what the prospects are for S3 custom ROMs continuing to receive love now that the new toys are likely to grab a lot of attention from developers. The thing that would weigh heavily against the budget option for me would be arriving on a dead or dying custom scene, where I'm basically left with whatever was around when the S4 dropped. That's what basically happened with my Thunderbolt when the Rezound and other phones were released, though it took about 6 months before ROM updates and bug fixes just stopped altogether for most ROMs. I haven't had time to explore all of the forums to try to take the temperature so I thought I would drop this quick inquiry to those who might know enough already to share their thoughts on the matter. If nothing else about the differences between the phones mattered to you, would the trends in ROM development alone sway you from an S3?

Development is obviously going to slow. S4 development is taking off quickly now.
However, just because development may be slowing down for touchwiz doesn't mean there aren't great options available. There are still great devs who are pushing out touchwiz updates constantly. Additionally, AOSP roms will constantly be updated much longer than touchwiz roms will.
The S4 is definitely a better phone, but i can't really justify paying that much more for it. I'm getting every feature I want from current custom touchwiz roms on the S3.

Not sure if I'm 100% correct but I believe the new ota broke root. That's something to factor in. You could also buy them and sell them on swappa, the cheapest is going for $515. There's also the upcoming moto x or wherever they are calling it. But then you have to wait and see if it's locked.
If I had the upgrade, I would buy them, play with for awhile and sell them and buy a cheaper s3.

That's something I meant to clarify. I've been hearing all the buzz about that regarding the S4, but does that also affect the S3? It would definitely seal the deal for me if the S4 had a chance of coming out-of-the-box locked up tight. I was thinking that with the S3 being older, it's less likely to come out of the box with that particular update (assuming it applies to the S3 at all) already on it, giving me a chance to root and customize right away.
I'm sure they are still shipping phones that do not have the update. You would just need to verify the build. Not sure how easy that is though. I'm not for sure but I assume you could downgrade the update, I guess being locked effects future roms being based on the new ota. I'm sure they will root it, I hope so.
Again, I'm not 100% sure but I'm confident in that the new ota broke root.

I got a S3 an a S4 about two months ago like both of them. The S3 is very easy to root even with the lastest update with casual. Both are good phones but for the price the S3 is hard to beat.
May want to wait for the official moto x announcement on Aug 1. It may be priced very aggressively and leaked specs point to a phone between the gs3 and gs4.
If I'm not mistaken, s4s bootloader is locked still.

Android 4.4 Galaxy S4 DISCUSSION

Alright guys, if you haven't already heard the awesome news, Google has finally released Android 4.4 KitKat along with the $350 16GB Nexus 5.
Let's make a few guesses, guys. From articles that I've read online, Google has already released open source AOSP sources for Android 4.4. The question is, when, do you think, we are going to receive this update officially on either TouchWiz or Google Edition models of the S4?
Also, since the source has been released, when do you think we'll see Android 4.4 KitKat in custom ROMs (CyanogenMod, AOKP, ParanoidAndroid, etc)?
Also, if you have any comments and questions, FEEL FREE TO USE THIS POST AS AN ALL AROUND DISCUSSION ON THE TOPIC OF ANDROID 4.4. THANKS!

According to the articles I read, it should be coming in the "next few weeks." I take that to read before xmas for the Google Edition ones.
For us lowly Canucks on Rogers, I figure we'll see it around July. =\

Considering most of us aren't evening running 4.3 yet I don't foresee AT&T rolling 4.4 anytime soon. Granted, those who are able to run custom rom's may be able to update to it in due time. But for the lot of us on MF3 we're going to fall behind unless by some miracle Samsung releases the keys at AT&T's discretion.

I bought a Nexus5 2 minutes into the sale. Going to be a hard decision whether to give it to my mom, or to give her my GS4, as she doesn't have a smartphone. I'm loving the google play edition rom on 4.3, and I'm not sure I'd want to part with the phone since it will get 4.4 anyway. The Google Play Edition really breathed life into the GS4 compared to the stock AT&T touchwiz 4.2 rom. It's like a completely different phone, except, unlike a custom rom, everything works, every time. No FC's.

Yeah man, I feel ya! I'm actually running Kangabean GE 4.3 right now and a dual boot with the Omega 4.3 ROM. Touchwiz sure has its perks, but it just doesn't feel well and its quite ugly at times. Even though we don't get the cool air gesture features while running different forms of AOSP, I'd still say its safe to say that the S4 on Google Edition is one of the best phones to have. You have expandable memory and removable batteries, also hardware keys. The Nexus 5 lacks these things. I'm just hoping we get this 4.4 update soon, because I've been dying for it ever since it was rumored to come out!

I couldn't justify biting the bullet and buying the Nexus 5...mainly because the developer base for flagship Samsung phones (S2, S3, and now S4) is so active.
I just had to keep reminding myself that I always end up with the latest nightly of CyanogenMod on every phone I own...so id be buying hardware spec upgrades and not much else (in regards to software since CM is eventually going to absorb 4.4 in its source base)
Man was it hard to say no though.....
I'm very excited for the GE edition to be coming out soon

I'm still up in the air about it, I love my Galaxy S4... but that Nexus 5 looks super appealing. I'm going to give it another week of thought before making my decision. Hopefully, if I got for the Nexus 5 it won't be sold out by the time I sell my S4.

where are the developers?

Hello
I got my Note 3 on 01/12/2013, I was quite excited to own such a powerful device with specs that no competitor can match. So naturally I assumed that the device will attract a lot a of developer support, I did notice that the forums were running short of AOSP based ROMs and there were only a few TW based ROMS. However I thought things would pick up in the new year and more developers would come to the party......but that hasn't happened!!
So I have to ask, why is the Note 3 not getting enough developer support/interest? There is no OMNI, PA, AOKP, PAC, Slim ROMS. Even CM seems to be taking forever to officially release a nightly.
Why is nobody even interested in porting the above custom Roms? WHAT THE H3LL IS WRONG WITH THE NOTE 3?
At this point I am considering selling or swapping it for even a LG G2 or Nexus 5..... And i don't care about the stupid warranty if that's why most people are afraid. If i could port and maintain OMNI or PA or AOKP I would.....

There is a daily build being done by temasek and boy is it stable.. battery life is excellent also.
Pong has built a few daily builds also... he is doing well.
ProBAM AOSB is smooooth as.
PACMAN was pulled. BAM is still there... There's enough for now... Remember CM is still at a very very early stage for the Note, sources only been out a couple of weeks man give it time.
Maybe not a lot of devs would want to spend that much money on a phone. Maybe when it becomes more affordable then more devs will join in on the fun.
It's pointless to flash AOSP or CM or AOKP on this phone, since you lose so much functionality. The pen becomes dead weight. You lose multi window on apps. If you have flip cover, it just becomes a standard cover. etc. etc.
If you are going to use this phone, you are going to use Samsung's OS. That's it.

Not much people will flash CM/AOKP/AOSP/PA and etc in Note series as it is downgrade the phone. Thus not many such developer on it.

Exactly. I only flash "enhanced" stock roms on my Note (2 or 3) and am really happy with it
This is one phone that I probably won't want to "mess with" for a while. First time I'm content with a stock phone. Using Nova Prime over TWH

Note 2 had awesome development and perhaps its not equal good on note 3. Mainy bcz some devs are still enjoying note 2 as other people and they think its not a worthy upgrade.

I miss only one thing here: Perseus kernel!
with xposed, doubt i need any development on note 3
This phones only 3 months old and believe it or not, a vast majority of people that get this phone actually do prefer touchwiz modified Roms.
sent from your moms bedroom. knock before you enter
I'm a MIUI lover, been with that ROM on all my note's and S devices. I have strong hope it will come eventually, for now CM with MiLauncher. Gotta love CM too because it really makes this device really snappy.

Just purchased a nexus 5 from T-Mobile

I'm now waiting for it to arrive in the mail so I figured I'd ask the few questions I have and get a general idea.
First off is there any difference in the model sold on the play store and the one from T-Mobile? Are there any ROMs that have pie control, I love cm10.2 on the Nexus 7 because of not having the constant home, back, ect. I got the 16 gig model how much space is actually available to the user? And finally in your guys opinion what is the best custom ROM to run, ive been running CyanogenMod since cm6 and since CM11 is still very early on in development, I'm not sure if I wanna ride the nightly train, stability and PIE I guess is what I'm looking for. Thanks in advance glad to soon be a part of the Nexus 5 family.

1.no difference whats so ever.
2. pie control roms, probably. i dont use it so never checked.
3. about 12 and a half gigabytes.
4. theres no such thing as a best rom. there's only the rom thats best for you. and starting threads on xda asking whats the best rom isnt allowed, and your thread will get closed.

$396.
Only difference between Nexus 5 purchased at T-Mobile vs. the Play store is that Sprint doesn't have the ESNs in their database so you can't activate it with Sprint. Nobody knows if they're going to change that later.
The best rom would be stock, just be stock and deal with it you will find that its good enough for you and you dont have to worry about things like backing up stuff or losing your MEID
Stock ROM would certainly be the most reliable. If you want more granular control of the UI but want to keep the back-end stock, consider Xposed Framework with GravityBox.
