Acceptabe battery/phone temperature? - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone know how high an acceptable battery/phone temperature is? I've had my phone plugged in to charge, using FoxFi to download programs on my computer, and running a few other apps on the phone at the same time, and noticed the phone getting hot. A battery temp app showed a reading of 114F before I shut most of the programs and functions down.
Just wondering if anyone knows of an upper limit before damage can be done. Don't want to break my new toy after only a week of ownership

What I meant to say was... you should be fine aslong as you keep the temp from exceeding 60°c (140°F) on both battery or the Processor.

Thanks for the info. 114 is pretty hot to touch, so I doubt I'll ever get that high!

So I have to handle with this 4.5 hrs of charging time
4.5? damn you must run your battery down to 5%.
Entropy's kernel uses alternative charging logic that supposedly charges faster at low battery. I don't know how effective it is, but you could give it a shot.

Yes, I am charging from 5%, Even if I charge from 50 to 100 it will take more than 2 hours.
the phone is charging 22 to 25% per hour. I dont think a phone should to such a long time.

I didn't understand anything in this..
Try deleting the battery stats when you are at 100%... you can do this manually or with apps like " battery calibration" free on market, or go to system and delete batterystats.bin manually, try everything i guess.
I was having same trouble when i used to change between ROMS a lot now i decided to stick with Infused 1.6 Froyo did the "recalibration" with battery calibration app, and takes a few days for the battery stats to rebuild correctly again.
But now it hardly takes my Infuse 3 hours to FULLY charge.
And you can recharge at any point even if its on 80% or 95% if you have a power aroudn charge while not using... this batteries dont get "used" for recharging them before "time" they dont do memory you can recharge at any time.. there was a whole thread about that somewhere here on XDA sorry i cant post the link just maybe try the simple way.... recalibrate on battery calibraiton and give it a couple days to generate an accurate stats.
Also recharge while not using (working....eating...sleeping...)
If nothing works maybe... get a new battery? may be faulty i guess.
Hope it helps

Clearing battery stats does NOTHING on the Infuse, or any of the first-gen GalaxyS devices, or any other Samsung phone with the MAX8998 PMIC for that matter.

it's funny (sad?) that you need to say this over and over again every single day. you'd think people would come across another one of your posts, which are everywhere, where you said this exact same thing.
Then you need to figure out the common denominator because either your cable, charger, or you aren't doing something right.
That amount of time to charge isn't normal.
Have you also tried pulling the battery for a few minutes then charging it yourself full? Don't power down, just pull the battery.

maybe try draining the battery all the way to 0. Recharging over night interrupted. And doing it once more. Not sure it will help, but I'd try anything.

Install CurrentWidget.
In the settings, near the bottom, there are settings for "operator on value" - Set it to divide by 1.83.
Then plug in your device when it's discharged below 80%.
Currentwidget should report 600 mA if you applied the correction factor above. If it reports 1100, you forgot the "operator on value" settings.
If it reports 475 mA, your device thinks it's connected to a USB charger for some reason.

The problem is people keep on coming from other devices, and they've been trained so long by HTC devices (most of which use coulomb counter fuel gauges) that they need to "recalibrate" their battery and let it "settle in".
Note that the GSII may also require battery calibration - it does have an updated fuel gauge chipset. But ours does not.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
Phone asleep and charging and phone completely off should be fine. Phone in use will take longer.
Also, the reason I said to measure at less than 80% is because as you reach 85-90%, you hit 4.2 volts and the charge circuit goes into constant-voltage mode - in this region, charging takes longer.
Measuring time to go 10-15% is WAY too inaccurate for any remotely decent estimate of total recharge time. ESPECIALLY if that 10-15% is near the top of the battery. Our fuel gauge probably has on the order of +- 3-4% error. For example, once I saw it drop 10% in 30 minutes, but then it recharged 10% in only 5 minutes. The 10% "drop" wasn't real.

Mines got that hot before...its not a big deal. It generally doesn't go any higher than that and mostly only happens when its pulling alot of power from the battery to maintain a stable connection (poor signal areas). Most of the time, it doesn't get that hot. If your phone is continuously getting hot, you might want to replace it, but just occasionally and for short periods of time it can be normal. If your not using the phone under certain conditions, it might never get that hot for you. Plus, these phones seem to vary depending on the batch that was created. If it is causing problems, or getting any hotter, or staying hot, or if it just rubs you the wrong way....yea, try to get it replaced.
If it
---------- Post added at 02:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:56 PM ----------
If it reaches a certin temp it will shutoff. But maybe your batt is starting to go bad. Unless your overclocked/ under volted then that's obviously the problem.

Oh yea, this reminds me to also mention to make sure your battery is seated well and the contacts are clean.
Come to think of it, Mine got that hot a few times when I was using a different radio / modem other than the on that was supposed to be with the ROM I was on at the time. Again, it wasn't a big deal or long lasting event (not hot enough to shutdown) but maybe the missmatched code was making it work a little harder at the time.
Lately due to summer and the increasing heat, while I'm driving my car using the gps and charging the phone I get a warning that's the battery is too hot and it stops charging.
When i checked the temperature its around 47 Celsius degrees, so like someone said its just a lot of power running through your device.
i have a powerskin case with my skyrocket and it gets that hot all the time when i am charging my phone and playing games at the same time

Have you try to clear the memory? maybe you have alot of stuff running on the background.
One thing I noticed today is by reducing the screen brightness to the minimum the phone requires significantly less power and is not heating as much.
Today while driving home from uni with gps and charging it barly got to 40 degrees Celsius (sorry im using this but you americans always have to be different, start using the metric system!), while usually it gets to 47+ asap and then stops charging.
Although today wasn't as hot as always so maybe it helped a bit.

[Q] How to Determine Battery Wear?

So, I'm pretty sure I've damaged my battery. I've constantly let it get down to 0%, let it sit there way longer than I should, etc. Basically, I've just treated it poorly and have been experiencing relatively poor battery life (relative to the first month or two owning the device) despite greenifying, having low brightness, using Franco's kernel, checking BBS/Gsam, etc.
My question is, is there a way to determine the actual wear on our device's battery? If it's significant, I plan to replace it. If not, I'll just deal and look into anything else that might be causing it.
Thanks in advance!
Just as a disclaimer:
I am NOT saying my battery is not calibrated or any of that already disproven/discussed nonsense

The Nexus 5 has a Lithium-Polymer battery, if you discharge one of those COMPLETELY it'll end up dead/damaged. Probably what the OP is worried about.
The battery percentage is a calculation based on usage over time / system set battery capacity, not real capacity. When it shows 1% in Android, realistically it probably has 5-10% left. System will shut itself off before battery is harmed from excessive discharge in most cases. There are ways to disable the shutdown when it hits the calculated 0%, but obviously, such a thing is stupid and rarely done.
I'd say your battery is fine, OP.

Just don't repetitively attempt to turn the phone on again and again when it shuts itself off at calculated 0%.. that would be another way to hit actual 0% and damage the battery. (not sure if there's any protection against this, obviously not a good idea to try anyways)
But really, don't worry about damaging the battery by "draining" it to calculated 0%.

Heat

Some phones are great to take camping because if you play Asphalt 8 long enough, the back warms up to the ideal temperature that can bake bread. Rate this thread to express the extent to which the Google Pixel XL stays cool under extended heavy use. A higher rating indicates that even when playing strenuous games for long periods of time, the phone doesn't get uncomfortably warm.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Does really well with heat. Under heavy use, it gets warm, but not hot.
Hottest mine has gotten was 104 F
Under normal everyday use this phone struggles to get hotter than ambient, and under load like during setup, where normally devices can get quite hot, the pixel doesn't.
No heating I seen .... early yet but I pushed the device and seen no problems.
Mine gets pretty warm when charging, aluminum is a great conductor for heat so no surprise.
I'm liking where this thread is headed so far. I love my 6P but can't take the throttling anymore. Can't wait to chime in when my XL comes in Tuesday.
Edit: Just got my phone in yesterday and got it setup. The phone did not get hot and throttle once during the entire setup process. That is a feat in and of itself compared to the 6P. Still haven't had any throttling issues playing games in areas with terrible signal either.
My Nexus 6 got super hot with games. Can't wait to get my hands on the Pixel XL

Does anyone else's phone stay warm after charging to 100%? It was charging overnight with the supplied USBA to USBC cable slow-charging from my PC (which is what I do most of the time to charge any phone) and when I went to unplug it this morning, it was warm to the touch. Much warmer than what I'm used to with any other phone. Usually, when I unplug in the morning, the phone is cold.
Anyone else experience this?
Not noticing any problems with heat on mine. My LG G4 would frequently have to stop charging because it got too hot. Nothing like that on this phone.

Coming from owning Moto, HTC, and Samsung phones the Pixel is the coolest by far. Even while updating apps, streaming media, and browsing the internet/social media simultaneously I've only had get what I would consider slightly warm. I also haven't experienced any CPU throttling whatsoever. This phone is in a class by itself in terms of this stuff.

So does that mean you can charge, use the GPS, and stream video with no issues? I frequently use my device as a music player and navigation in the car. My M9 currently gets too hot to charge unless the air conditioner is blowing on it.

Any reason in particular as to why you would use the slow-charging cable as opposed to the fast-charging one? I just got my Pixel XL and would love to know if this affects the internal battery in the long run. In terms of heat, can't say I have experienced anything. I used it for 3 hours straight and it wasn't even hot. Mind you I had the screen around 20% brightness.
The screen on this beast is amazing! Once indoor, I can set it to minimum and I'm fine. :good:
This device never gets hot for me with one exception: Daydream. Daydream makes this device hotter to the touch than any device I've ever used. I think this is part of the reason for the metal frame: to conduct heat away from internals and allow to dissipate.
Under normal usage the Pixel XL does not get hot. During fast charging it may get a little warm. Under daydream usage it's hell's furnace.
Yes it does.

if your phone isn't cold to the touch then i suspect a defective battery thermometer. if thats the case buy a new one off the internet. if somehow it fails to solve the issue then your phone is defective itself. i never heard of this issue before.
