Am I reading this right that the new radios that are part of the leaked JB update are not included in the ROMs based on the leak and that the radios should be flashed separately?

From what i understand you have to flash the new radio it doesn't come with the rom and if you want flash the new rpm also.

I can flash the new Jellywiz rls 12 just fine, but still trying to figure out what an "RPM" is. Can't find a simple explanation. The modem at least relates to the mobile data, still can't see if it's necessary to flash though.
if you flash the odin version of I5 jellybean it will include the rom, kernel, radio...however the previous root methods dont work and the bootloader is locked. im not sure if it can be unlocked yet. rpm is a power management update.

Quick question. I've flashed modems before when installing a rom (like any of the i9000 kernels) but was wondering if that modem stays when I flash a rom like, Cognition. Are there times when the modem stays? If I flashed to, I think it was JG8 to get HSUPA with an i9000 kernel, if I decide to go back to the CogKernel, do I have to swap out the modem again?

ok so I was an original GS III owner (I preordered, used the original root66, waited for the unlocked bootloader, etc.)
I just rx'ed a 2nd replacement because the power button fell off my first replacement (my 1st gsIII had a faulty modem).
This one came preloaded with the 2nd OTA (VRALHE)
I was wondering the correct method to go about setting it up...
1.) odin the original root66 VRALF and continue in the same way I did with my original one (dd a TWRP and the insecure bootloader)?
2.) I could follow the directions in section 1 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709
and odin a pre-rooted VRBLJ1. It then says I can just go ahead and add a custom recovery (it mentions the EZ app but I'd rather just dd. then do the insecure aboot the same way)
3.) I could follow the directions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974114
it mentions ODINing the VRBLJ1 leak and then ODINing a custom recovery but the recoveries INCLUDE "VRBLJ1 Bootchain." Why?
according to Invisiblek (http://rootzwiki.com/topic/29256-ro...-unlock-sch-i535-d2vzwverizon-galaxy-s-iii/):
What the locked bootloader prevents us from doing is flashing, via odin, a custom recovery or kernel. What we can do however, is revert to an older (semi-insecure) bootchain which we have acquired, flash our custom recovery, and then continue on from our freshly flashed custom recovery by flashing an unlocked bootloader and anything else we want.
Kernels from the newer OTA's prevent us from doing this process. We'll need to flash a kernel too...

he mentions flashing the VRALEC and then later (after flashing the VRALF2 kernel and a custom recovery) the VRALF2 bootchain. His explanation makes sense, but the other threads say to use the VRBLJ1 bootchain. why all the conflicting info?
Also, as I wrote this I used the rootDebugFS thing on my freshly rx'ed VRALHE. i then dd'ed a recovery and the insecure aboot. Everything is working fine. So what's all the fuss about? and will I encounter problems if I try to odin anything, like invisiblek said?
Thanks

I'm assuming since VRBLJ1 is the newest JB leak then it uses the newer boot chain. The only reason you would need that boot chain to unlock the bootloader is if you used Odin to flash the newest VZW JB leak onto your phone. Then you would need it to unlock the VRBLJ1 JB leak. If you are are any of the ICS stock ROMs and want to unlock you can use the old way of doing it. The post you are reading from invisiblek is old, it was when we were on the VRALFW stock ROM.
Now I have no clue why you would want to use Odin to flash the newest JB leak when you can do it by downloading the version of the ROM made to be flashed with TWRP or CWM. I would love to have a dev or someone knowledgeable about these things to chime in and tell us if there is any benefit to using Odin to update to the newest JB leak or if there is no difference between having the JB leak or one of the OTA's on your phone before you flash a ROM.

Its just another way of basically doing the same thing. If your already rooted and have cwm recovery, then flashing a J1 rom via cwm or twrp recovery is by far the easiest method. Now if your stock and unrooted, it would be easier to odin root66 J1 , then unlock and get cwm recovery via the ez unlock/recovery apps. This is why I have 2 different methods in my guide...I also chose to not flash bootchains unless its a last resort because they can perma brick a device if something goes wrong. Also I like to use methods that dont trip the flash counter, makes for one less thing to do if the device ever needs to be returned.

Gotcha, that's been bothering me for a few days. I remember when I was flashing on my RAZR that the stock OTA was the base for everything and if you didn't have the latest OTA some of the ROMs wouldn't run on your phone until you updated and some of the older ROMs wouldn't work until they had been updated to work on the newest OTA or leak. The ROMs were just overlays and usually only added a little bit of added performance or functionality.
Would updating to the latest OTA via Odin add any benefits like it did on the RAZR ? I know the RAZR wasn't unlocked and we weren't flashing ROMs like we do on the GS3 but.....

No I get that, I was meaning are there any positive side effects from using the newest JB leak as your base ROM before flashing a new one. Like flashing the new JB leak via Odin, then unlocking and flashing a new ROM on top of it. Will there be any benefits like there were on the RAZR or when we flash in custom recoveries does it completely do away with the stock ROM that was on the system partition and replace it with whatever we flash? I know on the RAZR you would use the ROM you were on as a base you flash whatever else you wanted and there were benefits to having a certain OTA as your base before you flashed. I don't think I'm doing a very good job of phrasing my question, I apologize for that. Its just a hard question to put into words.

no not on samsung devices...the reason you needed to do that on the moto device is because of the locked bootloader. meaning you couldnt replace the kernel, so you had to ota to the latest, then root , recovery, and flash rom. since our device is fully unlocked, we dont have to worry about this. most if not all roms for d2vzw are packaged with a kernel. so it does not matter what current base your on, flashing a rom will overwrite it.

Hey guys, just a quick question, must we always flash the firmware zip file first in bootloader before flashing a custom rom?
I ask this because I had already flashed the latest firmware (3.33.401.6) ages ago, I've been using albinoman887's CM 10.2 rom and Carbon Rom without any problems (well actually, I do have battery issues and 2 small minor issues). But today, I decided to check my firmware version using fastboot command
fastboot getvar version-main
Click to collapse
and I got something like 1.24.401.1.
Well, that's obviously wrong, so I flashed the firmware again and this time it shows the proper version.
So I was just wondering, does doing a full wipe or flashing a new rom affect the firmware at all? Must we flash it everytime prior to flashing a new rom? I don't understand how my firmware was changed even though all I've been doing is switching between JB custom roms.

It happened to me too and I still don't know what caused it to change. Maybe it changed after I performed S-Off or maybe it changed after flashing ViperS 3.1.2.
Edit: It is not causing any problem as your actual firmware is same. You can flash any ICS/JB rom with this firmware. No need to flash firmware before flashing ROM.

Hmm......ok so now do you flash the firmware every time before you flash a new custom rom then?
For me, the 1st time I flashed the 3.33 firmware was when I've had S-OFF first, then I flashed the firmware and then the custom ROM after, in the proper order.
But I still don't know if I need to flash the firmware everytime or not.

No. I never flashed firmware as my firmware is already 3.33 and it just shows 1.24.401. I just flash any ICS/JB Rom and it boots perfectly that means I've latest firmware. There's no need to flash firmware even if it shows 1.24.401

Well, I'm the exact same with you, I could still flash JB or ICS custom roms even though mine says 1.24.401.
However, I read somewhere that it's not accurate to check under Settings for the firmware version as it could have been edited in build.prop. The safest way to check is to put your phone in fastboot mode and run the CMD command:
fastboot getvar version-main

I read that today and decided to check it again to make sure, and my firmware version comes up as 1.24.401. I then decided to flash the 3.33 firmware again, this time after running the same fastboot command, I get the proper firmware version shown as 3.33.xxx.x (can't remember what it was).
So ya, I think something must have went wrong....
Currently I'm on 4.1.2, Hyperdrive RLS16, Base MB1, and build number is MF1.. So am I actually on the wrong base right now ?
I'm wanting to flash one of the latest PAC nightly, so I'm thinking I need to flash the MF1 base.
Do I flash that FIRST, and then the Rom/Gapps, or how do I go about this ?
any info is appreciated, thanks.
If your baseband version in about phone says I535VRBMF1 then you should be good to flash PAC. I don't think it really matters. I will find the link for the MF1 firmware.

No, my baseband version is I535VRBMB1
"Build number" is JZO54K.I535VRBMF1
that's kind of confusing.. after looking at the hyperdrive forum it says mb1 + Parts of MF1 so I'm guessing Its still based on mb1.
So do I need to flash MF1 before the rom, or after ?

Seems like you already on MF1, but your radio(modem) is still MB1, you could just flash the MF1 radio and you should be up to date.
Ok. I already have the MF1 zip.. Would it be worth it to find just the radio, or should I just flash the zip I already have ?

Only full blown firmware come with modem. an upgrade only for the rom. If you flash a full firmware the down side is it going to wipe all your data/settings, the good side is you have a clean install. If you feel that your phone is running well then just flash the modem which is VRLF2 can be found here http://invisiblek.org/sch-i535/modems/VRLF2.modem.tar.md5 . An other point is sometime the newer modem is not necessary better.

VRALF2 and VRBMF1 are not the same thing. VRALF2 is 4.0.3 ICS. VRBMF1 is 4.1.2 JB. Invisiblek stopped making modem-only zips once we moved onto 4.1.2. So VRBMB1 (4.1.2) VRBMF1 (4.1.2) firmware update about five partitions which you can easily see if you unzip the files. VRUCML1 (4.3) firmware only updates one partition because, well Invisiblek explained it best in his firmware thread. What you linked is an ICS modem-only zip. Flashing these 20 MB zips does not wipe you data. You're confusing that with an Odin flashable stock image which is at minimum 1 GB, these do wipe /sdcard.

You don't NEED to, but you can. Different modems/radios (baseband) seem to work to varying degrees on different devices. People have had mismatched build and baseband numbers with no ill effects. You can flash the MF1 file and see if your reception improves, stays the same, or gets worse. If your reception improves with the MF1 radios, then stick with them. If your reception gets worse, flash back to MB1. It's going to depend on which radio works best on your phone. The only thing I have read recently that seems to be a must is anyone who flashes a 4.3 (ML1) ROM seems to need the ML1 radios to get good reception.

You don't need to flash that entire rom, it'll unroot you and put you at risk for being updated to the 4.3 base. You're only looking to update the firmware which is much easier.
Go to this link, click the latest firmware AIO link, download the mf1 firmware and flash in recovery.

Thanks. I have the MF1 zip already just haven't flashed it yet - I didn't know if I need to flash it before, or after the rom ? or if it even matters ? Me going to one of the latest PAC Nightlies which is a 4.3 I will need the ML1 baseband after the MF1 AIO, Correct ?
I'm a little hesitant to flash any of these before i know that it's exactly what I need because the phone is Verizon, but my carrier is PagePlus. From what I've read and been told flashing these sort of things has the potential to screw up my PPlus flash.
Again, Thank you for the info It's much appreciated.

I'm not completely sure about page plus, but in this case I wouldn't even worry about the ml1 modem. It's only really needed for the 4.3 Touchwiz rom. AOSP shouldn't make too much of a difference.

hey guys, i just gave my father the nexus 5 and hes using it for straight talk and its working quite well. ive already unlocked the bootloader and installed a custom 4.4.4 rom (as thats what i was using before i got the nexus 6). is there anything special i need to do to install a rom like Chroma 5.1.1 at this point? Thanks for any help
If the bootloader is unlocked then you should be fine. I had some radio problems and I flashed about 10 ROMs, including Chroma, without any problems (but never did fix the radio). The simplest thing would be to install a Nexus factory image - LMY48I is the latest version and is pretty much one-click (if you have drivers, ADB & Fastboot installed ok).
Just for my curiosity, if it's working fine, why install a new ROM? I know my own answer - because it's there...
To go from 4.4 ROM to 5.x rom you should flash the updated bootloader and radio first. Then wipe system data and cache andd flash the new ROM.

Well I have him on a stock 4.4.4 rom and the battery life is a little lacking and he keeps getting the annoying nag message for the OTA to 5.x.x (i know theres a way to get rid of that but i guess id rather just update). Also I dont see any roms being actively worked on for 4.x.x. Unless there is one that you recommend?

Is there a thread that maintains the radios and bootloaders? I dont see one myself and am not sure which to get (and are there different ones depending on which carrier you use?)
There is a thread with all the latest radios. I have a flashable zip but its old...you can also just extract the latest factory images and just flash the bootloader and radio.

I'm missing the point here...
Was the original question not "Can I easily flash 5.1.1?" And the answer is "Yes". So why has the focus switched to Kitkat and flashing separate components, surely not the simplest way of getting a working integrated device...? Installation of the factory Nexus ROM, or the Chroma ROM, will wipe everything anyway unless you specify "no wipe", which isn't recommended for a major change.
Am I misunderstanding?

Just a bit I think. I think its because I kind of ended up adding another question to the thread sort of. Right now the phone is using all parts associated with 4.4.4 (I.E. Radio & Bootloader) and a stock 4.4.4 rom. I originally wanted to know if i could just flash a custom 5.x.x rom without needing to flashing a new bootloader or radio as i wasnt sure if there were ones. Then I also asked if there was a rom that is still under development for 4.4.4 that was worth a shot. Sorry If i made it more confusing with this post lol.
But why stick with Kitkat and jump through hoops with all the concomitant risks when you can one-click upgrade to the newest version? I'm still not getting why you're asking about Kitkat when you originally asked if it was easy/safe to upgrade to Lollipop 5.1.1.
Hint - yes, it is.

Your best bet would be to flash the factory image. This will update the radio and bootloader. Then reinstall the recovery and flash away.
