What temp is too hot? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

What temperatures begin to do harm to your phone? Is it an all at once thing or many occurrences over time? I try to keep it fairly low but it got around 117°F this morning when I was charging it and stuck it under my pillow when I was half asleep. I googled it and couldn't find much.
Thanks!

That's pretty damn hot for a phone. But that's 47 Celsius you should be fine.
Just dont do it constantly

The temps discussed here are much higher than you guys are talking about, so I wouldn't worry about it.
CPUs are designed to operate at much higher temps than 117F. Also, the phone will shutoff automatically as it approaches excessive temperatures.
I assume the phone going under your pillow was an accident. But of course, you should avoid situation where the air/heat exchange around the phone is limited. Although I have mine in my pocket most the time, which is probably worse than a pillow.

(FIXED) G2x gets flipping hot sometimes......

Woah is me. My g2x gets hot. So does my mt4g my g2 and anyone else's phone I use. I started to wonder why.....its the way I'm holding it. Yes, simply that. Oh lets not forget after a nice full wipe and everything is installing over again that taxes the processor causing it to get hotter than normal. Oh it gets hot sitting in my pocket doing nothing when it's really hot outside.
Anyone here ever pay attention to when it gets hot and actually wonder why it does?
ITS ALL WONKY!!!
Morfic has a good post somewhere about this. If I recall he made mention that the Tegra 2 can bake a cake under certain conditions (I believe primarily when OC). What kernel are you using?
edit: nvm...
What I'm saying is its general body heat. Our bodies are average of 98.6 degrees. So holding it.in your hand alone will warm up the device.
Think of holding a glass of milk firmly in your hand for a while and see how long it stays cold compared to letting it sit on the table.
In some cases I think it is the phone but I would say 90% or more its the user not the device being a defect.

This post is completely false. Body heat? Come on.....If this logic were true then why have I picked the phone up off my cocktail table hours after not being used only to feel the phone much hotter than the surface it's sitting on in a air conditioned house? These processors run MUCH hotter than a body temp could ever reach and they were designed to withstand these temperatures. This is what CPU's do when you tax them, they get hot. If you still want to believe this bogus logic then I propose you open a HD game, set it on your cocktail table and only touch the phone with on of your fingers. Play it for about 15 minutes, pick your phone up and tell me if it's hot.
Last time I checked, my laptops CPU/GPU isn't touching anything but still gets hot.

Ok hold your phone by finger tips in the corners and tax the processor and then let it cool down and holdbit firmly from behind and do the same thing and see how much faster it gets hot.
This phone sitting on a table does not get hot at all. In my pocket when its 100 degrees outside does get hot......while doing nothing more than standby.
Its not BS. Yea these processors get hot on their own but I'm making a point that if the back of the phone has body heat covering it, it will get hot or at the least warmer than normal just because of that.
ITS ALL WONKY!!!
I live in an area where it is as hot (soon to be much hotter) as body temperature and my phone does not get noticeably hot unless I am really taxing it. But as far as exceeding design limits of CPUs I would have to be significantly overclocking it and taxing it at the same time.

This is your opinion unless you have the data to prove it. I have had phones get hot without touching them so I'm not believing this and quite frankly not a lot of people are. I asked you a question earlier. Why does my laptop and desktop CPU'S get hot when I never come in contact with them?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
In my opinion the thing that makes the phone warm up mostly is the cell radio. Download a 30mb file ( not on wifi) , turn off the screen, and watch how warm it gets. Also watch the large battery hit.
And every smart phone I know will get hot on a demanding game..

It barely gets warm when playing a 3D game like Galaxy on Fire 2 or RPTide (or whatever).
I download CM roms (98mb) over cellular EVERY day and the phone feels cool to the touch.

you are comparing a computer to a phone.
i understand your point, anything being run hard will get hot.
im just saying tho, my battery temp has reached 100 degrees just being outside and not used. its reached 100 when i hold it in my hand covering the back a lot even doing simple tasks. when i hold it without the back totally covered from my hand, it does not get as hot when taxing it more. when my speck case is on it does not get as hot if im holding it fully in the back.

Sensation got really got while idle under my pillow.

While I sleep I used to keep my phone under my pillow until this happened. Some night I went to bed with 50-60% battery and woke up with phone gone off cause of battery drain. It was very strange for me it has happened 3-4 times and I didn't pay much attention to it. Last night I went to bed with 50-60% battery again and put my phone under my pillow. In the morning I heard battery empty sound alert and I decided to check what is going on. The moment I sticked my hand under the pillow to get my phone I felt huge amount of heat it was very hot under my pillow and the phone was 5-6% battery left and it was very very very hot I even scared for a moment that something might melt my old battery got to 50 degrees and I think the phone wasn't that hot. The only thing I did was remove the rubber case and put it on the charger and leave it near my bed and it was okay. But that heating was really strong and it scared me a bit do you have any clues what might have caused it. Now the facts:
Position of phone: I think the phone was just under my head (trough the pillow) and I've might be lying like that for a long time.

You put it under your pillow (no ventilation), and you're surprised that your phone heats up excessively?
Excessive heat negatively affects battery performance. It's really that simple.
Your head may be causing some attenuation causing the phone to hunt for a signal, in turn leading to more heat and decreased battery life. Why on earth do you want to sleep with your phone underneath your head?
I've put my phone in bed before and I've noticed if the phone gets covered with a blanket or pillow it will heat up very very hot! However, I've NOT had the battery drain issue. This seems strange. Perhaps the battery is failing? I wish you luck! Hope you get this figured out!

1. Go into settings, sound and uncheck pocket mode or whatever it is called. Could be the cause of the battery drain. 2. Also are you running any apps that cause sensors to be on persistantly?
You moving around and such in your sleep could be why, if one or both of my points apply to you.
That being said.. how about putting it beside your bed instead. Lol.

Without any form of ventilation to cool the phone off, and increased battery usage because your signal is most likely very bad under there, you are surprised it gets hot?

I believe it's fine so long as you turn on Aeroplane mode which disables the radio and so there are no radio signals going through which is what I do.
Also, I don't find the phone heats up, might get a bit warm but not to the extent that OP is describing.

Well of course my first thought was it doesn't cool properly. But I wasn't sure the phone doesn't have any cooling or anything like that and if you put your nokia under the pillow it wont get hot or it never happened with my Samsung Omnia. It could be some other reason and just a coincidence that it was under my pillow. are you sure the if the phone is trapped under the pillow it can't cool properly because it doesn't have any fans or anything like that.
After thorough investigation I found a solution to your problem. Here it is:
Don't put your phone under your pillow.

Ive had same overheating issue with Galaxy s2 on ICS 4.03 and with the same games played on HTC ONE X, i've got same overheating near camera n top screen.
I dont think this issue is phone specific
I guess some games and apps are are not optimized for ICS 4.03, coz same games didn't overheat my galaxy s2 on GB 2.3.6.

How hot is too hot??

I've looked around and either most people are confused as to whether they're talking about battery temps or CPU temps or cannot come up with a definitive answer.
I'm looking for an answer on CPU temps and not one of those "I've seen a phone get up to 1000 degrees once and still work" I mean I'd like to know what a phone can consistently(hours at a time) run at without causing damage.
Reason I ask is when I tether my CPU is at 140 F and the Battery is at 109 F. Now I'm not too overly concerned about the battery I'm fairly confident that 109 isn't damaging it. I am concerned about the CPU though as I have no clue when the "danger zone" is tripped temperature wise. If someone could enlighten me it would be appreciated.
When it's gets that hot, I'll remove my battery and let it sit for 20 minutes. Then I'll swap it out for another new battery off the wall charger.

Usually at this point I remove the back cover and place the phone upside down in front of a fan which cools it but I would like to know if this is even necessary....
Higher temperatres for batteries are not good for them at any time, they will speed up the degredation of the battery itself. That being said, it routintely gets 109 degrees in the summer where I live and I rarely have a battery problem, you will noticed a shorter life span on batteries both while they are being used and over several charge and discharge cycles. The battery will naturally heat up while charging, especially using the rapid-charge methods most phones use right now or when charging from a very low charge.
As far as the CPU goes, 140 degrees is about 60 C, most CPU's can tolerate up to around 70-75 C without causing problems. Also, IIRC most boards have a cutoff if the device gets too hot to operate, I know the iPhone does so I would imagine that Android devices do as well.
That leaves it a matter of your own comfort, if it is too hot for you to actully hold onto and use - that I have seen before, in which case the best method for cooling it off is to actually turn the phone off, remove the battery and let it sit at room temperature until the device cools. Using a fan will work but is far less effective. The use of power-saving mode can also help because a good portion of heat in the battery while discharging is due to the CPU and Power Saving mode sets the CPU to favor lower processing speeds, which of course lowers heat. This does assume you're not doing something with your phone that will tax the CPU.

Just flashed to CleanRom and my cpu is OC'D TO 1.99 GHZ. I was wondering, it feels kinda warm, so what temperature should be normal?
Another thing to keep in mind about batteries and high temperatures is that the negative effect from the high temperature is at it's worst the higher the charge level. So if it's going to be getting hot--it's best to not keep it plugged in constantly.

That will happen no matter what.. enjoy your phone... get new one after year or two.
This guy just likes to troll, don't pay any attention to him. Look at his post history.
For the record, 44C is on the higher side but my M7 regularly hit 48C and had the same battery life it did out of the box a year later. There are varying degrees of battery quality. You'll kill your battery more leaving it to trickle charge all the time than from 44C temps. You'll also kill it faster the more times you charge it to 100% than the temps will.
