Hi all,
Today was a tough day for me. I bought a T Mobile HTC One S in India (It was unlocked).
When I started using it I found that it did not connect to 3G Network.
So I thought may be installing a new ROM would help.
So, I Rooted my phone with the help of such useful posts on xda (Thank You all for Making it so NOOD Friendly)
But, the ROM did not start, it stuck on boot screen (THAT STUPID UNICORN)
I waited for hours, but NO SUCCESS...!!!
After doing some wrong things, I BRICKED my phone. It only started CWM Recovery.
But, by TRIAL & ERROR, I fixed my phone right back.
FIRST OF ALL THANK YOU ALL THOSE AMAZING DEVELOPERS ON XDA WITHOUT WHOM THIS MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE
Now, I decided that I should post something so that people like me would get some help.
Here it is:
STEP 1:
1. Put your phone in BOOTLOADER mode by pressing volume down+power
2. Download AIO Kit from HERE
3. Extract it and Run it.
4. You will see a Flash Recovery radio button.
5. Select TWRP from above list and click on FLASH RECOVERY
6. Once it installs. Repeat the 1st Step and put your Phone again in BOOTLOADER mode.
7. Press volume down button and highlight RECOVERY and press power button again. You will enter recovery.
I followed all those above steps as instructed by the best posters on XDA (THANK YOU ALL).
Now when I tried to mount sd card, it said error mounting sd card. Then I again searched all forum and tried everything but I was unsuccessful.
I was worried as how was I going to put a ROM on my sd card so that I can put my ONE S back to normal.
I also used "adb push" syntax and tried to push the ROM on sd card, but it was a failure. The ROM transferred to sd card but it did not install since it still showed "error mounting sd card"
(IF YOU HAVE FACED THE SAME PROBLEM WHAT I HAVE WRITTEN AND YOU ARE STILL TRYING TO FIX THAT MOUNTING OF SD CARD ERROR FOLLOW THE STEPS I HAVE WRITTEN BELOW)
AFTER THAT I FOLLOWED THE FOLLOWING STEPS AND MADE MY MISSION SUCCESSFULL
8. Click on MOUNT USB in the recovery mode. You will see that you laptop / pc will come up with a message that you storage has errors and you need to fix it.
9. Click yes and format it. (You will see later that it was your phone sd card)
10. Once the format is complete, copy the ROM you want to the device and you will be flashing it later.
11. Now, click on UNMOUNT USB. Remove USB Cable
12. Now get out and click on INSTALL in TWRM Recovery.
13. Browse where you pasted the ROM.zip file and start installing it.
14. After successful installation your HTC will boot normally.
AND DONE...!!!!
I would highly appreciate if senior members of this forum modified what i have written in a better way. (SINCE I AM IN A HURRY)
If I helped, PLEASE DON'T BE SHY TO SAY THANKS...!!!
THANK YOU ALL THOSE VALUABLE MEMBERS OF XDA WITHOUT WHOM MY HTC ONE S WAS NEVER GONNA GET BACK TO NORMAL
Just to clear something up.....if you can get to recovery your device is not bricked
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using xda app-developers app
Also, I'm relatively sure this exact thread has already been posted and is linked on the first page of the faq thread.
Dude! You are a god send =) I soft-bricked my One S nearly three weeks ago. I happened upon your thread and yours was way more thorough and user friendly than all the rest. I followed your steps exactly and voila! Got my phone back from the coma state.
Much obliged,
Da Baron
Rom?
I know this was some time ago, but do you recall which rom you used?
Well, I cant go to to recovery, hboot nor the bootloader. So im simply f-ed up.

man in the step 13, before I install the rom I need to wipe something or no?? thanks

I was running a hero ROM on my device, and wanted to try an Eclair ROM. I wanted to flash it but in the process I saw something like: E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command on the screen. I went ahead and performed a wipe because I read it was harmless. But then the installation was aborted because the file update.zip couldn't be found (even though it was on my phone). So I went ahead and rebooted my device. Now it always gets stuck at the little green android, then he disappears and I get a black screen. The device remains on however and I need to pull out the battery for it to turn off... COULD ANYONE PLEASE HELP ME
After doing all you did your device should boot normally. Obviously it didn't. I don't know what went wrong, but if you boot into recovery you should be able to flash a ROM.
Just make sure you have the right recovery and right ROM files.
I only have that Eclair rom on my device (which can't be flashed).
My PC won't read the SD card anymore so I can't put any rom on it...

Your not bricked... you basically just failed the update process then wiped your current installed rom with the Wipe. Now you rebooted the phone but there's no rom to load. You now see only the boot starting up and hitting the wall with no rom to load.
That makes sense.. How can I fix this issue?
thank you
Would help if you could give us some info on your phone.
Can you enter recovery or fastboot again ?
phone model, spl & radio version ?
this is why Iphones were invented.... For people who cant understand simple directions or even read for that matter.
What recovery do you have? Get another rom, go into recovery, hit the USB toggle switch and put anothe rrom on. It doesnt have to be named update.zip...
Nevermind.. Doesnt matter what I type here you'll go an do what you want anyway.
I have the htc Magic
How do I get to see my radio and spl?
Yes, I can enter recovery mode.
thank you
I can enter fastboot!
RADIO: 3.22.20.17
SPL 1.33.2005
btw it's a 32A
Where is this USB toggle switch??
Android system recovery utility
Use trackball to highlight:
click to select.
reboot system now [Home+Back]
apply sdcard:update.zip [Alt+S]
wipe data/factory reset [Alt+W]
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command
That's all I see.
Only the latest recovery has the Usb option in it.

+1 to that.
You wipe your phone, couldn't boot it and you did not know the reason for this. You wiped your ROM, there's nothing to load up when you boot it. It's so simple.

Wow, just wow. If you need spoonfeed after spoonfeed, How in the world did you root your phone in the first place? You run into problems at EVERY step. Honestly, get the iphone (It's not that badddddd of a phone! Just agreeing with what crypt said!) or don't root your phone. You fail to even look for instructions. I don't understand how your PC can't read your SD card? That probably means it's dead (Which means you need a new one) OR the thought of taking it out and plugging it into an sd adapter never occured to you. I bet you even wiped your SD card somehow.
How come you can't put the recovery on your SD card? Or the rom or anything else

And why was the ROM (update.zip) on your phone and not your sd card? I believe that you fail fail fail to look at any instructions the awesome people have posted here. If you fail to follow instructions given on these forums, how will you follow instructions given from members trying to help you? I find it useless to bother helping any further.
I don't have an sd card adapter and since my phone won't start up, my pc won't recognize my device anymore. Take it easy btw, I'm only looking for help
If help is what you're looking for, then go look around under these forums. I suggest you go and buy an adapter as well, it'd help a lot. May even be your only choice. (I believe there's another way but I'm not going to bother with that as it may be too complicated for you. I dont' think it'd work either with your recovery)
I don't mean to be an ass but when questions like this are posted, I hope you understand. It's as bad as asking how to turn your phone on vibrate. The manual is with your phone and everything, take a look or get some common sense and try the volume buttons.
The forum is your manual. You wiped your ROM, well if you think about it, of course it wont boot up all the way. It has nothing to load. Can't put stuff on your sd card? Get an adapter. It's simple.

I thought people would think right away that they would need an sd adapter to somehow get it onto their computer once they have no other choice lol.
okay that's clear, thank u for your time
For now I don't have an sd adapter, so I stuck the sd card in my brother's phone and tried to put the necessary files but now it seems I have to format the sd card.. Is this harmful or should I just go ahead?
I have the latest recovery but I get a popup message on my PC saying I should format the SD card. Will I still have the 'data' file where I need to put the recovery file under?

what ever you have on it will be erased.
You can also use fastboot to flash the recovery without having to import it into the sdcard. I would not recommend it to you do since lack the basic android knowledge. (all the command are listed in the thread i posted earlier)
If I format the SD card, where should I put the recovery.img if there is no /data anymore? (using the reboot method)
Hi all, First of all, please forgive me for asking a probably silly question for my first post! Anyway, I got my new Nexus S in the mail the other day, and its nothing short of fantastic I quickly looked up all the cool things I could do with it and I discovered rooting. Btw, please don't take me for a n0ob, I probably sound like one but I do have some limited knowledge about this kind of stuff. Anyway, I proceeded to read up as much as i could, and eventually unlocked the bootloader of my phone from a seemingly helpful guide. I used Clockwork Recovery Mod. A link to the guide I followed can be found here
nexusshacks(dot)com/nexus-s-hacks/how-to-root-nexus-s-or-nexus-s-4g-new/
I also installed superuser following the guide above. This is where my problems start. After this, I started up my phone, and it loaded fine, and i could see the superuser app in the menu. I proceeded to recover all my contacts and previous apps etc, and used the phone for a day. After returning from school this afternoon, I planned to install Cyanogenmod 7. I thought that the best way to do this would be to follow the guide that nexusshacks.com supplied as i previously used their guide. Link here
nexusshacks(dot)com/nexus-s-hacks/how-to-install-cyanogen-mod-rom-on-your-nexus-s/
I booted the phone holding volume up and power, and proceeded to follow the video instructions. when it it came time to enter the recovery mode, my phone rebooted and instead of initiating clockwork, my phone got stuck on the google screen it shows before booting. I understand now that I was supposed to load my preffered roms etc on the internal storage SD before unlocking, and I can't access the SD card to do so. Every time i try and open it on my computer i get "please insert disk into drive x". I haven't downloaded Rom Manager yet, and i know i need to flash clockwork recovery first, but I don't want to risk doing that then attempting to access the SD card, frankly because i'm a little in over my depth (if you haven't already gathered!).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated as to where to go from here.
Thanks!
I don't have a Nexus however with with Evo the process is similar ...can you boot into recovery?
If yes....boot into recovery. 2) then go to mounts/storage 3) mount USB and that should allow you to see your USB in your pc ...4) put the rom of choice on your card 5) unmount
Be sure before flashing that you clear cache, dalvik cache, and wipe data/ factory reset then flash rom ..
See if that helps

you have clockwork recovery right? theres an usb storage option in the recovery itself. connect it to your computer, turn on the usb storage. download a rom(and gapps) to your computer, copy/paste into the device, turn off usb storage, then flash the files in clockwork recovery. then reboot.
After you do what he said, either do alot of research about rooting, and flashing roms and kernels or sell your phone.

So I did follow your instruction. I went storage->mount usb storage->unmount(I can only select this, I try reboot the phone still give me this only option). so I also tried mount sdcard, mount system, all that.
Finlally, I got removable disk on my computer, but it show 0 byte, when i click on it, it says plz insert a disk into removeable disk. so i went click
property->hardwares->highlight Android UMS composite usb device(type: disk drive) and property. then I select driver-> and there is driver details, update driver. So do I update this driver? If so which driver?
I try to format it, it gives errorlz insert a disk into removeable disk
I have clcokworkmod recovery v5.0.2.0 and it is unrooted. thank you for the help!
I also install PDAnet into my computer but it keep saying connecting to your phone..... I try using different usb port and no luck.

By the way you just click on mount usb storage and LEAVE IT there for a few seconds. It takes a little time for the computer to recognize it usually. You only click unmount when your done...

Coming from someone that also finds conditions & situations similar but not precisely like my own in the multitude of answered threads..... Some of us can get to a certain point but get stuck, and since these are devices we need to work we want to be sure we don't do something to turn an expensive device into a pretty paperweight.
You learned by fiddling and asking questions did you not? If you are sick of the same old question don't answer the thread.
Sorry, I have no great advice for the OP, you aren't an idiot you are uninformed [just yet] of the proper fix for your problem. I'm still trying to fix something myself so the couple of snipes hit a nerve this morning.
I read read read and read again, its been almost a week. Good god I cant get the solution or may be i dont undderstand it. I try go to cmd prompt and "type fast boot lock" to get it rooted. No luck
my phone situation:
No back up or recovery ( I wipe all sd/back up/system)
fasboot mode-no boot or recovery img
Lock state- unlocked
can only go into clockwork mod
my Goal: lock the phone and flash it to factory stock setting.
I just own nexus s for 7 days and did a ton of research coz stuck at google X animation keep loading and install MIUI and unroot the phone. Soooo stupid of me now that I broke the warranty. Softkeys is no even working!!!!!! when i suscessfully get into the phone.
is there a proper step by step to do this? is there any expert here that can point to the right direction? I am checking this post every 5 minutes
Clearly this is too much phone for you.

Ok I'll try to help you.
According to what I gather from your posts, you've been successful in unlocking the bootloader and managed to flash CWM recovery, that's a good first step.
Your goal is still unclear. Ok, you want to re-lock the phone and 'restore to factory stock settings'? Does that mean you want a stock firmware on your phone or would you settle for a custom firmware, like Cyanogenmod or MIUI? Either way, visit the Nexus S Development forum, there's a full list of firmwares , just pick whichever you want and download that.
Here's a fantastic topic with a list of all firmwares and also plenty of links to guides:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1067813
Enter CWM recovery mode (VolumeUP + Power button and select Recovery in the Bootloader options).
Go to mounts and storage. We want to mount or SDcard so we can transfer files from the PC to the SDcard as a USB mass storage device. Make sure the phone is connected through USB.
So, select the option: - mount USB Storage. Wait for a few seconds, it takes a while to get initialized by the PC.
Once it's recognized by your PC, copy the downloaded firmware to the SDcard. It should have a .zip extension and be approximately 100mb (of course depending on which flavour you picked, but that's somewhat the standard).
Once it's copied, go back in the CWM main menu and select "Install zip from sdcard". If you want, you can first wipe your cache and Dalvik cache, but since you clearly wiped everything already this shouldn't be necessary, so anyway; install zip from sdcard and select your firmware.zip file. Select it and press the power button to execute the install.
It will install the firmware plus the kernel that it's packed with, all this should be enough to get your phone booted. So reboot your phone and it should work.
Once you've successfully booted into your device, you can do whatever you like. If you want to lock the bootloader again though, you'll need to reverse the steps you took to unlock it. This is through ADB and Fastboot. But this topic explains it step by step and in detail, all credits to the OP: (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875630).
If the bootloader is locked again, you shouldn't have any issues with the warranty. It's a Nexus...
Some of your posts were a bit contradictory so I can only assume what your current status is with your phone.
Maybe you should also understand what everything means and does instead of blindy formatting disks and running random commands. Learn what ADB is, learn what Fastboot does. See how the bootloader works and where the recovery comes in, read up on the different firmwares and what kernels do. It might seem like a big investment of your time, but it will help you understand the boot process of the Nexus.
Good luck,
Greetz
I search this form but haven’t been able to find a solution to my problem; I’m hoping some has already experienced this problem. I have flashed several roms on my previous phone but this was my first attempt in rooting my Inspire and flashed a new rom. I used the ACE Hack kit to root the phone. Then used the CWM-RECOVERY-APP to wipe the phone then installed Coredroid (all from the SD card).
I’m stuck in bootloader / clockworkmod, and can’t reboot my phone.
Any suggesting would be greatly appreciated.

You should still be able to boot into recovery mode Power off your phone wait like 10sec after powering off. Then its VOL down & Power at the same time still holding down the vol down it should boot into recovery with in 5sec or so. Once your into recovery I want to say select mounts and mount USB storage. Once you do so you would be able to access your SD CARD and remove what it is most likely you have the PD98IM.ZIP still on your sd card. IF not I would say re D|L what ever rom you have and reflash..hope this helps
Is it possible to use the ACE Hack kit to flash the stock RUU to fix this problem?
Thanks

Once you do so you would be able to access your SD CARD and remove what it is most likely you have the PD98IM.ZIP still on your sd card. IF not I would say re D|L what ever rom you have and reflash..hope this helps

its cool dude..just remember that you can still always boot into recovery mode with that step that I stated above I had to go that route a once or twice before cause of a bad d|l.. but Im sure you know once you get everything all working and installed with whatever ROM you chose make sure you do a ROM back up with rom manager back up options..never know when you may need it lol
I just installed the Android Revolution HD 6.5.2. On the first boot, it's been stuck on the "HTC quietly brilliant" screen for like 15minutes. Did I do something wrong during the install? How do I fix this? Prior to the install, I used superwipe, flashed my phone then installed the Android Revolution HD 6.5.2.
Did you install the right firmware before flashing rom?

I may or may not have. Could you care to elaborate about the correct firmware? Thanks, it would help a lot. Kinda crapping my pants right now :/

"It's necessary to flash new firmware package before flashing this ROM ---
--- Firmware package contains newest radio for 6.5.x ROMs ---"
Need to know what is your cid in order to install the new firmware but it should be this one
Download firmaware and put on sd card. Then reboot into bootloader while pressing vol down + power button. It will install the right firmware. Be patient untill the entire process is finished and prompted to reboot.
The screen may goes black a couple of times before the process is completed, no panic and just wait it to finish.
Later, remember to delete the PG58IMG from sd card.
Hope it helps
That's the exact guide I used to root my htc sensation. The problem is, my phone is stuck on the boot screen "HTC". Is there a way to access the SD card to reverse the installation of the rom? Thanks.

Need a sd card adapter or another phone
Is there anyway to start my phone? Is it bricked?
if you are able to reboot into bootloader you are not bricked.
Pull out the battery and reinsert, power on while pressing Volume down + power button and tell me what happens and what it says.
It boots into 4EXT Recovery. The only zip i have on my phone is superflash and Android_Revolution_HD-Sensation_6.5.2. I tried formatting all the data, and doing a clean install of Android_Revolution_HD-Sensation_6.5.2 but it keeps freezing on the screen that says "HTC quietly brilliant" when i reboot? Is there anyway I can get this working with what I have? Thanks man really appreciate the help.
I told you. Download the right firmware and put it in sd card, then reboot into bootloader and it will install the new firmware. Read my previous posts
In 4Ext recovery there should be an option like "togle usb" or something like this. If so, you are able to see the content of sd card and you can put the PG58IMG on it from pc
Yeah i hear you, but is there a way to access my root folder? It's not showing up as a removable drive. I dl'd the PG58IMG.zip, but I can't drag it into the folder, because when I plug my usb into my computer, it's not reading my phone as a removable drive = /
probably you dont have the htc driver installed. Download from Here
I downloaded the htc driver prior to rooting my phone. What are my options now?
So, your pc dont see your phone right?
In this case you need a sd card adapter and work from there.
Clearly you didn't install the firmware before flashing the rom. If you look at my previous posts I gave all the instructions.
Find a way to read your sd card from pc (adapter?) then put the firmware (PG58IMG) in the root of sd card and reboot into bootloader to install the firmware.
Later, remember to delete PG58IMG when you are done.
Then, all should work fine.
Good luck!
PS. hitting thanks button wouldn't hurt me by the way!

Yeah im new to the forum, ill definitely hit the thank button. I looked in the 4EXT Recovery program and I found there's an option called "USB mass storage device". Now I can drop the file into the SD card. Before I install the PG58IMG.zip, should I run superwipe first since I installed the Android_Revolution_HD-Sensation_6.5.2? Thanks

Yes better superwipe again even if you did before. Let's say start from the beginning just to be on the safe side
1) install firmware
2) superwipe
3) install rom
Hmm weird problem. I tried installing the PG58IMG.zip and it says ..
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.
Any clues?

You dont have to install PG58IMG from recovery.
Just off the phone (pull the battery out and reinsert). Power up by pressing volume down + power button (keep it pressed until hboot screen appears). The PG58IMG is automatically recognized by device and you will be prompted to update. Say yes by pressing volume up. Then be patient and wait for the entire process is completed as I told few post ago.
Sorry I forgot I had to install it in bootloader xD god, I hate roms! I wish I got into phone modifying long time ago. Im such a noob it's so sad
When you are done, remember that first boot takes a while so be patient and just wait
