Custom case - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I am in the process of making a custom case for my HTC one XL, that has a metal frame, I heard that metal around the antennas would block its signal. I was wondering if that was true, if so would someone post a pic showing the location of the antennas?
Also if any one has an idea for the case feel free the post it.

A CNCed alu case would be sweet!

I'm pretty sure its along the top of the phone..

If the HOX is like any other superphone on the market right now, the GSM/HSPA/LTE radios will be located near the bottom rear of the device. The BT and WiFi radios will be located near the top left and top right corners of the device respectively. I'll look for a diagram or something and amend this post later.
Just out of curiosity, what was your concept? Are you going to incorporate usage of the Pogo pins for charging or any other functionality?
----------------------------------------
I stand corrected, as per the following FCC diagram
http://www.droid-life.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/htconex.jpg

I had a aluminum metal bumper for mine, didn't affect data coverage but it made the already weak Bluetooth signal weaker

I'm going to have aluminum frame for strength. Not quite sure on the design yet, but will post a pic of the design when done.
Any ideas?

Maybe line the inside of the aluminium frame with a rubber sleeve to prevent any metal to metal contact?

That's how mine was, the only issue was mine would leave black marks
Make sure its non marking rubber

I'm going to have some kind of cushion inside the phone between the frame and the phone... Will that be enough to keep the metal frame from lowering the signal?

Depends on the material really. Since radios transmit and receive radio waves, any physical contact with metal components could interfere with the physical board somehow. Having a rubber insulator would prevent any of those kinds of interference. The actual radio waves on the otherhand could be affected by the metal frame, depending on what material it is. Obviously anything ferrous, magnetic, will affect the radio waves. Not sure about anything that is directly non-magnetic though (aluminium) because one of the posts above mentioned that he had an aluminum bumper and it affected his BT signal.

Uh oh i dont see the vent holes tho -_-
is that going to be an issue?
why are they releasing it without holes for the rest of the antenna?
my cheap tpu case has all the holes... wtf otterbox?
Looks nice but missing holes. It looks like they have a little door that protects the mini usb. Sweet!!!!! Hope they fix the holes on back. Not the end of the world tho. Just drill them out.

I have a case without any of the holes and I find no problem at all. also i think the girth of it fixed my death grip issues too.
He said girth you probably are fine. Guess you dont record guitar into your phone or need your mic then

What happened with the noise cancellation mic then?
So if you look at the photo of the back of the case you will see that the mic for noise cancellation is exposed.

Yes, the back mic hole is exposed. And the others do not need to be exposed. In fact, it probably helps to present a build up of dust by not exposing them.

I don't understand why people get excited for these commuter cases. The corners are barely protected and the case eventually ends up stretching. I've owned 3 between my Nexus One and myTouch 4G and it's the same thing every time. It's the Defender series people should be excited about. Those are some serious cases.
I also prefer a hard case rather then these commuter cases. I got the Mobi hard case and love it it has a nice feel and the phone is really protected.
Yeah those holes have absolutely nothing to do with cell reception. I believe you will find TPU cases reduces your cell reception. Install a cell reception graphing app like OpenSignal and see for yourself. Mine is laying in the corner on the floor (where I last chunked it) only because I have yet desired to expend the energy needed to throw that garbage in the trash.
I am ashamed that such a predominant company would make such a fantastic phone with such a weak design for the antenna.
awesome, what holster can be used with this? Do they sell a compatible holster?
now available
I bought one and unfortunately I have been getting many complaints about the microphone being muffled. Can anyone give advice about another good hard case? Maybe something a little more beefy.

Yea, I had a Seidio on my BB, and they were the first cases I were looking at. But now that the pictures are actually out, I'm probably gonna go with TPUcases instead.

I've been noticing that most of the cases that are available only have the hole above the camera, even the ones sold by T-Mobile. So, it got me wondering, do the other holes serve any purpose? I took the back cover off and can immediately tell that the hole above the camera serves a purpose since it has a grommeted pass through in the inside housing. So, its good that every case I've seen has that hole cut out. The other four holes have no pass through and appear to only be there as rivet/mount points for the antenna contacts. So, after seeing that, I'm less concerned that even reputable manufacturers like otterbox are not including the other four holes that seemingly serve no active function.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
I had the active case on my nexus and didn't like it. The rubber piece collects too much lint and dirt and would get stuck in my pocket when I try to pull it out. I think the surface case would be much better, but that is just me.
I dont see what holes are needed for? EM radation passes THROUGH materials just fine. (You can make calls inside your bathroom, right?). As long as its not a metal case, or some other materials that conducts current, you should be fine.
Sound on the other hand....

Is this, like their tough case, two pieces that fit into each other?
On the web page, they make it seem like they have formed the two plastics of this case into one piece but I can't tell.
I think its still two piece. I vote white!

It is one piece made of two materials(hard rubberand plastic) and it does not have two layers,so it is very and I mean very difficult to put it on the phone and take it off.It id also easy to scratch because plastic is high gloss.i had it on Desire HD and swap it for Tough which offers much better protection. But I have to admit that Pop is looker
just ordered a white one today
Couple questions about this case.
1: Is the inner layer on this like soft sillicone?
(I'm not liking the harder material that TPU is on my phone. I can tell its wearing on the front corners and making the matte finish to be shiny.)
2: The only hole that im worried about is the one above the camera and it seems to be covered. Is this hole actually anything to worry about?
(They are all just mounting points for antenna contacts, but the one above the camera is the only one that leads to a hole in the phone housing.)
3: Can anyone post pictures of this yet?
Looks pretty sweet, Someone post some pictures once you receive it.

What's the lens cover made out of?

I think it's a very clear type of plastic. I work in a lab and we have all kinds of glass and plastics. It resembles the kind I use on some test tubes.

Haha... well I also suppose they would go for something a bit clearer knowing that there's a camera behind it. If not clear, a plastic that's a bit more scratch resistant. I really doubt it's glass let alone gorilla glass.
I think its the same type of plastic used on the lens cover of the Desire. For that reason i'm a but worried because the desire's scratched easily and became blurry from carrying the phone around in a pocket. Mine even had a crack in it.
Since the Desire had a removable back this was not a problem, you could replace the back or, as i did, push out the lens cover completely. But this is not possible One X. One X takes very good videos and photos and i dont want to ruin it with damaging the lens cover so i will definitely place a protector on it asap.
Wondered the same thing when buying it because it seems without a case the phone rests on the lens when played on its back. Got a case soon after just incase though, but i'd love to know for sure.

It doesn't actually rest on the lens, per se. It rests on the lower edge of the metal ring.

The ring's edges do not seem to stick out, so it is exactly on the same level as the metal ring. For that reason whenever i place my phone on the table, i place it with the screen down.

It's not. It isn't cost effective, the optics wouldn't gain much from it because they're not the best. And the lens focuses past the lens cover.Just like a filter on a dslr.

Metallic backplate...

Just bought this off eBay the other day....
Arrived this morning and I have to say I'm loving the feel of a metal back.
It's a replacement back so doesn't add any more to the size and is brushed aluminum. Signal strength hasn't been affected either so I'm happy.
Cost £8 and just a quick search on eBay haha.

It is not IP67 with no rubber. It's real aluminum according to the people in another thread who got this.

Does your backplate vibrate at high volumes?
Yeh I can confirm after being out with it today that I have dropped maybe one bar for reception overall...
It's real metal and feels nice thanks to the brushed effect...
And no it doesn't have the rubber seal so no ip67 protection. This doesn't bother me though as I don't get my phones wet even if they say they are water proof to any degree.
I'm really happy with this and think I'll stick with it... I've now ordered the green and blue one.
If u search eBay for s5 metal housing u will find loads in the us, uk and China...

Having a metal back must have some effect on reception. It MAY be too small to make it go from x bars to y bars and it will possibly have more or less effect depending on which direction the transmitters are in, but lets be realistic here, radio waves will travel much easier through rubber and plastic than they will through any kind of metal.
So the difference in some situations may be very small, and in others may be significant. Personally I would rather have the strange rubbery back that comes with the S5, knowing 1: I am guaranteed the best possible reception at all times, and 2: because of what it is made of, I cannot easily dent, scratch, or damage the back and 3: It's construction will allow for better grip than a hard metal back so I am less likely to drop it.
Samsung themselves have said the reason for lack of metal back is due to the effect it has on reception. And this is what worries me, if they get pushed by idiots and the media into putting metal cases all over it for no good reason, we lose points 1-3 AND inevitably have to pay more for the privalege. No problem if people want to buy a 3rd party or even Samsung original metal back but I hope to god they don't start shipping them as standard.
All I can say is the back I bought is no less grippy than the original backplate... and the signal loss is slight. Your usage may vary but for me it's fine.
I also think u could scratch the plastic cases or damage them as easy as a metal one... plastic isn't invicible to damage.

I concur. Using it right now. Feels pretty good.

Definitely looks thicker than the original back. I might jump on the wood back though
Based on my experience with a metal back plate on my S3, I didn't find any issues for reception (but there probably might have some effect).
It's usually slightly thicker but feels good.
One reason why I didn't go for metal is because I intend to go for a wireless charging solution and a metal back would interfere. I ordered a plastic blue one instead

I just recieved mines in the mail. It definately does vibrate at high volumes. As other's have said, it has extra thickness. I have 5+ difference cases and none will properly fit with this backplate on. Kinda dissappointed.
At closer inspection, the backplate is pretty much a plastic back cover with a thin aluminum layer glued to it.
