Hi. I was trying several times install cm9 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-T959V/Installing_CyanogenMod_9 but its very messy for me. Im noob ( just know how to install on my i9300 via odin ) and want to have everything clear how to install cm9 on t959v.
Can you answer with one post step by step how to do this?
This phone runing now slim ics 4.0.4 vkg4 ( tried to install something different then 2.3.6 )
Im already have first 2 files on pc and dont know what to do with 3rd "a kernel with cm recovery".
Please help bcs dont like slim 4.0.4
P.S If you prefer any other ics just tell me how to install it. Want to have something different then slim.
Good luck!
The answers you ask for... are all there in the dev thread at the beginning of every single rom posted there.
No one wants to sit here and hold your hand and so on.
If your that confused then I suggest you hold off flashing for a few weeks to a month ....after you've read the instructions so much that you've got them memorized.
Thank You
Well i know this will be hard and people are too lazy but this will be first post which can help not only me, bcs i saw many posts with same problem what i have.
If not can you just copy/paste link what i should do first ? Copy/paste is not hard. And dont answer like "... are all there in the dev thread at the beginning of every single rom posted there. " please bce noobs dont know where exacly and what dev , rom posted here mean. If someone asking thats mean he reading everything and didnt recognize what to do or he have stopped at some point.
Please
Lol you want me to copy and paste what it already says in every rom thread???...No im not doin it.....not even for just one rom.
You my friend have got a GREAT DEAL to learn and I'm not a teacher but i will assign you a seat number right in the front row of the short bus.
Read, read, read, and continue to read.....enjoy the ride.
Someone please report and get this thread shut down.

Current ICS ROMs typically don't have a separate zImage. For these ROMs, the zImage is "buried" inside of boot.img along with the root filesystems and initialization scripts and binaries. For current ICS ROMs, the recommended approach is to use recovery or a dowload-mode tool like Heimdall to flash kernels.
Most ICS ROMs will flash their kernel along with the ROM.

This is just a quick list of things I thought would be helpful to Noobs/Newbs. They're not in any particular order. Also, sticky if need be or just leave as is. Sticky would be preferred though so Noobs/Newbs can see it right away. Anyway, here are what I feel should be the 10 Commandments for the SGS4G Forum. You may agree or you may not. Think what you will. If you feel anything should be added, PM me and I'll make the changes myself. Thank you.
#1 - Search The Forum Before Asking Questions.
Unless you like getting flamed by people when you don't search before asking.
#2 - DON'T USE ROM MANAGER ON SGS4G EVER!!!!!!
Unless you really like ODIN that much.
#3 - DON'T TRY TO FLASH ANY ROMS OUTSIDE OF THE SGS4G FORUM
Unless you wanted a nice brick instead of a phone.
#4 - Read the "[Guide] *NOOB's* guide to flashing " Thread In The General Section Before Trying To Flash Anything.
You'll eventually get pointed to that direction anyway if you don't read it. Trust me, we can tell when people don't.
#5 - Read The Instructions For The ROM Before Installing.
Unless you really like reflashing or reverting back to STOCK. HELLO ODIN AGAIN.
#6 - When You Have A Problem With A ROM, Be Descriptive About The Issue.
Believe it or not, the Devs here can't read minds nor can they see over your shoulder to see what your issue is on your phone. They're good, but not that good.
#7 - Be Thankful Towards Our Devs.
If you like a ROM, show your appreciation. If not, then keep your mouth shut and use a different ROM or better yet go back to STOCK. ONCE AGAIN, HELLO ODIN.
#8 - POST IN THE RIGHT SECTION!!!!
Prepare to get flamed if you don't.
#9 - When Flashing From Froyo To GB, Follow FBis251's "[ODIN+CWM] GB Ext4 Starter Pack (Sep 27)" Thread or use the updated Kies Mini to upgrade to official KJ6.
If not, then yet again, HELLO ODIN.
#10 - For The Love Of Our Forum, Don't Ask A Dev For An ETA!!!!!
You'll only get one answer if you do. WHEN IT'S DONE!!!
Going to add one more thing until we actually get it for our phone.
#11 - If You're Coming From Another Device, Don't Come In Here Thinking You Can Get CM7 For The SGS4G.
This goes along with #3 in a way. Its being worked on. Now that we have the kernel source for GB, we are now one step closer. So, until the devs figure everything out with the source to get CM7 working, IT CAN NOT BE INSTALLED!!!
Now if you're wondering, "What is ODIN?" well, there's a guide for that...
[GUIDE] Noobs guide to Odin to flash your SGS4G (Windows)
Like I said, feel free to PM me if you feel something should be added.
Not bad.. I'd also add the noob's guide to ODIN, and put up a link to the Bible thread to find every ROM, guide, Kernel, modem, etc that's been put up in the dev section.
Nice Work Thanks
Deserves a Sticky
Nice list, glad to see it stickied.....hopefully it will cut down on the repetitive questions that have been plaguing the threads lately.

You're the best kind of new user, the one who reads and tries to keep informed. I'll be glad to help if you have any questions.
well im glad its not overlooked
So, I think "Do NOT necro threads" should be added here. I'm seeing that a lot recently. It's just ridiculous.
I think that is general forum etiquette, not much SGS4G specific.
Updated #9 since we now have an official GB Upgrade. Will be taking #11 off as soon as we get new kernel working to run CM7.
Nice laws. I made the rom manager mistake when I was a noob. Seemed like the easiest way to go, until my phone wouldn't boot.
has anyone figured out why rom manager cannot be used...and if so what are proposed solutions
hey guys could you please direct me to the link on how to totally start over fresh.. basically if i want to do a complete wipe and start over on my phone ive got the kj6 version.. i think its probably a good idea for me to familiarize myself with it now thanks..

Look up Raver's Odin KJ6 rom. It'll leave your phone as if you had just downloaded the Kies official update.
Thanks alot... I've just been putting particular things on my phone.. Checked out and installed a few roms... I've read on some of these threads about ghost roms and other issues just want to make sure ive got my bases covered.. Thanks again..

hi all i have samsung captivate i897 from at&t but i am living in india i have stock android 2.2 firmware can anyone give me step by step guide to install cm on my phone my phone build is something like UCKJ1
whats wrong with the instructions that Cyanogenmod thread gives?
i am unable to understand those explanation i dont know if cyanogenmod is for froyo or gingerbread i am also not familiar with heimdall i often use odin so if anybody can give me instruction it will be very helpfull to me as i have said that i am in india so i dont want to brick my device
if it is your first rom DONT flash CM.READ and KNOW what you are doing before doing something BIG...
moving to cm will change your partitioning table. if you dont know what that means you shouldnt do it yet.
READ. LEARN. SEARCH READ MORE!!!
CM isnt 'for' froyo or gingerbread.
it REPLACES froyo or gingerbread (it doesnt matter what you are on now)
Learn, flash something NOT cm7 or miui. then learn more then flash CM
there are many how to flash guides. I know i wrote the newest one. it is stickied.
read the new user guide in my sig. learn what stickies are, then find the stickies and read them.
Go to mobiletechvideos.com or watch josh youtube videos on flashing cm keep watching read and get a usb download jig before you do anything it will save you if you [email protected]# up

like just said above the miui has an install guide on their website. if you cant follow those instructions dont flash.
Go to captivate Developement section > Find Miui thread > Click the link to go to thier site;s install instructions. DONE.
why would we RE-Write the guide just for you?
Hi guys,
as i said in the title im completely new to all this. My mum has a desire s and i think the sense software is rubbish..hence i want to install MIUI. I have an iPhone which was extremely easy to JB and ive been searching around for help rooting/flashing an MIUI rom to the Desire S but damn it looks complex :| and im being extra cautious because its my mum's phone and i dont want to brick it.
After searching im still confused..
Do i need to root to flash MIUI?
If so, how? Can i use this method? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525100 Is there anything i need to do before and/or after I use this method?
Also, this is the MIUI rom i've found..http://forums.miui.us/showthread.php?2543-ROM-HTC-Desire-S-(saga)
It says the kernel is included in the download, but does that require a seperate installation?
Can someone help me please? Been looking around for days and just not getting it :/
Help will be greatly appreciated!
Sorry, I don't want to sound rude , but , have you checked the first couple of pages here on Q&A ? There are at least a couple of threads with similar querries ....
Plus, there's INDEX (with everything you require) for help , as always !
I'd suggest you read more , before even thinking of S OFF or Rooting!
Best of luck ....
i dunno about your 1st question but once u "jb" ur android, the kernel will be in the same zip so that when u flash the rom, u chg the rom and also the kernel. u will need to flash "gapps" as well if the is no play.market app.
as for your question 1 i use a different method so i cant comment on that.
but do be reminded to do each step and tick it off slowly once u done. DO NOT skip/miss a step. I actually took 2 days 2 nights reading through before rooting it, and i still made a mistake(as i was in a hurry for class, wrong timing for rooting). but once u read through the doing part will be quite fast. next thing u know u can flash different roms when ever ur mom gets bored of her phone interface.
try flashing different rom before and see which is faster and slicker.
try getting a "aokp" rom, it give u more to configure around. miui doesnt have a drawer and it looks alot like an iphone interface if that is what ur mom wants.

This belongs in Q&A not general, for future reference. I have reported this to the MODS, so they can move it.
if you're planning to flash jellybean then you need the boostrap from this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19355021 , with that installed, go to dev section of the forum and d/l a custom rom and flash following steps in the op , remember always to make a backup of your current rom

So, you're not "lazy", just apprehensive. There's nothing wrong with that. However, what we do here on xda isn't to spend time explaining all the pros vs/ cons to all ROMs available, nor is it anyone's assertion as to what the "best" ROM may be -as this is all very subjective to the individual. There's a hefty ROM list of threads in the development section, so it's your responsibility to read over each one (that may strike you as interesting) and make your own assessment to which you may choose.
Also, each ROM thread by our dev team has explicitly detailed installation instructions, so there should be no reason as to why you would run into trouble -so long as you read, re-read, and fully understand what you're getting yourself into.
Also, there's a handy little help thread that I started for any and all questions, problems, etc. So, if you happen to run into anything, feel free to post there. Myself and a few others maintain that thread, so you should expect an answer without the need of posting a new thread each time you have a problem.

what do you mean by "phone reboot within awhile"? Is it that the phone keep rebooting itself?
well.. I am a newbie too but I have flashed my phone more than 100 times I guess, keep trying on XDA developers' custom ROM (because they are way better than SAMSUNG stock rom)
I think there is no such ROM as most stable or appropriate here, every ROM has its own feature(some might be laggy or buggy though) so the best way to find out which 1 most suit your needs is to test them out. You can read through the threads in Development forum, there are many ROMs there from XDA developers. See some review and comments to find the ROM best suits your needs, and follow exactly the installation guide then you should be able to flash your phone without worry
Im currently using [4.1.2] JellyBam ☄ v3.1.0 [AOKP.CM10.PARANOID] by Lolation, very smooth and kinda good battery life too
good luck flashing~ =)
