So I messed around with it and figured out it still had s-on , so I try to flash a sense ROM thinking you can flash them with s-on but they still get stuck at boot screen any help and ideas what's wrong?

What's the best way to get this recovery without abd?

get s-off, its not that hard .. not sure why everyone is so hesitant to do it
then install 4ext, you can do it through a terminal on the phone or get the 4ext updater app thing
for ICS/JB youll need to update the firmware as well

Soff is a good thing. You might want to s off his device
I'm s off and I don't regret it. It just makes things a bit easier. I agree with above post. It's definitely worth the extra effort.

Hi,
Go to settings /power and untick fastboot.
Power the phone off,or remove the battery.
Power on holding the volume down and power button.
Go to recovery and enable "Smartflash" just before installing the ROM.
Should be fine after that.

Clockworkmod not working? Help

OK I got a new G2X after the charger port in my old one from T-mobile. I root it with superclick one then download clockwork from the marketplace. I try to boot into recovery and then the phone hangs. When he does not hang it says install of update fails and wont let me flash my rom. Did clock work change or am I doing doing something wrong?

That one from the market is a no go for this phone. That recovery (I assume via ROM Manager) simply not gonna stick.
Go to this thread and flash the recovery using Nvflash:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
This question should go to the G2X Q&A section, though.
Good luck!

Abandonware??? What gives you that idea??
In the play store ROM Manager was updated the 16th of this month, and if CWM was also abandonware then no newer devices would have been getting CWM on it.
Is that a legit question or are you trolling? I find it hard to believe someone would be calling it that.

First, the best way to get CMW of any version is by using the NV Flash ( Search that up ). Then you can boot into recovery by pushing the power button (the one on top), and the volume down button ( Its on the right side). It should boot into recovery perfectly after you do this. Tell us if it works!

Agree, Best way to flash recovery is Thru NV flash. Its a little complicated but ones you get the hang of it, its easy than you though
ROM manger can flash recovery but not always does a full flash, so best way is NVflash.

Can I install a boot.img within phone?

Hi everyone, I have S-on still, I am wondering if I can pull the boot.img from a kernel of a rom and move somewhere to my sdcard if I wanted to flash a rom that doesnt have this built in to it...the reason I am asking is because alot of downtime at work and sometimes I want to tinker with other roms, but since I have hboot 1.27 most of the roms need the boot.img pushed, and I cant install software to do this on my work computer....If it can be done on the phone by using ES file explorer or something similar, can someone guid me on where to put the boot.img...i believe on the root of sd?....just curious here....thanks much...Larry

if you use 4ext recovery with s-on smart flash enabled it will flash the bootimg after it installs the rom i believe, so no need to manually flash the boot img. is this what you mean?

Yes.. Wait for 10 minutes max.. If it's not booting then.. You need to flash boot.img of the rom seperately from fastboot but that process requires pc access.. Or try this.. If not booted.. Go to recovery again.. Then enable smartflash again and immediately flash the rom.. Without doing any wipe.. This might work

are you 100% sure smart flash is enabled? when you flash some roms like arhd it flashes a new 4ext as well i think.
if you do then im not 100% sure on how to proceed. have you thought about just going full s-off? once you have it you dont need to flash the bootimg afterwards

This is normal for Smart Flash, the device will boot to the splash screen then flash the boot.I mg then reboot again but all the way nto the ROM on the second reboot. Also I know you can flash splashscreens and recoveries via Terminal Emulator but I am not sure about the boot.img. From what I am do know about Android I am thinking you probably can not but it is worth a Google search.
Ok, so I downloaded the Elegancia Pegasus, I went into 4ext recovery, did a super wipe, turned on smart flash, installed the rom zip, did not reboot but enabled smart flash again, and then installed the rom again..(reason for this was I was thinking maybe it installed a new 4ext)..I really dont think it did though, but still stuck at the white htc screen...I may have to just do this from a computer...weird thing is that Elegancia sense 4.x 3.1.0 flashes just fine, but i imagine thats because that Boot.img is not getting written over by the pegasus one..any other ideas?...the ext recovery I am using is the stable most current release btw..thanks everyone...Dirtylarry

Can anyone help? Im gutted....and fell like an idiot.
Ive got an S4 on the three network.
Thanks

Htc One S bricked
Hi im relatively new at rooting and am currently experiencing issues with a bricked device.
i have two htc one s devices
my personal one is running cm10 ville with clockwork touch recovery and is working perfectly
however the second one i was using the same exact files.
this one is bricked
its in a constant bootloop.
i can get back to my recovery just fine and get to the fastboot in the phone fine
i cleared my cache
wiped my data and wiped the dalvik cache all perfectly fine when i try to flash the cm10 official rom back on it cannot mount the sd card
i would try to install a different recovery and try again maybe using viper one s
but i cannot get the phone to power on
it doesnt showup on the computer when it is plugged in while in fastboot
when i try the cmd fastboot flash recovery it says waiting for device
any advice. this is not my own phone so i need it repaired pretty quickly.
any helpful information would be much appreciated.

all you guys getting sorted
make a nandroid and sdcard bu NOW and put them on pc,
obviously leave a copy of nandroid on phone also
makes it a lot easier if you get in trouble again
and you/we will
Mounts and Storage --> Format everything --> Now Mount USB Drive --> Put Gapps and ROM
Flash it, erase cache & and Dalvik...Blah blah blah. Flash boot.img in fastboot, and there you go.
Everybody, please remember this and there won't be noob q&a anymore...

[Q] advice for backing up recovery booting? noob question?

I'm a tech savvy person in general. When it comes to rooting phones though, I just follow directions without fully understanding what it is that I'm doing. I understand what root access allows me to do, but I don't understand how I did it.
So, I have the Verizon Galaxy S3. In August, before there was an official way to flash roms, I followed instructions that had me root and install EZ-Recovery in order to boot into recovery mode and run a custom rom that way. I've been doing that ever since. Now that a rom can be flashed officially, I would like to do that, so I don't have to boot into recovery.
The problem is that I haven't been able to find instructions on how to undo booting into recovery. Is it as simple as just booting normally? or is there something special I need to do?
Also, I like the way my phone is set up, is there a way to back it up as is, and then reinstall it exactly how I have it. Does Titanium backup do that?
Sorry for what I assume are newbie questions. I had a hard time finding answers simply by searching. It is entirely possible I'm using the wrong keywords.
TLR, I'm booting a custom rom through recovery, but would like to use a custom rom properly
INFO: Using EZ-Recovery app and flashed CWM 6.0.1.0 running Bean's Custom Stock rom
Thanks for any info!
First to backup exactly how you are boot into recovery select backup and restore then select backup.
Second, I'm not sure what you mean by officially run a ROM the only way I know is to flash it in recovery. What ROM are you wanting to install?

Weird and it does that by just holding the power button? Never heard of that, maybe some one a little smarter then me can answer that.y answer would be to Odin to stock then reroot, unlock, etc and flash the ROM again and do an advanced restore of just your data (assuming you flash beans again)

Is it possible to do a factory reset and start from scratch that way?
If I'm reading this correctly he's still using flash method before the boot loader was unlocked. Id say the best way of going about this is to back up the ROM you're running reset the phone to stock reroot/unlock the boot loader then flash your recovery of choice and restore your ROM. I hope this helps!!

I tried going back to stock by doing a factory reset, but that simply reset the ROM to scratch. I feel like there is an easy answer, I just don't know what to search for.

That screen is supposed to appear once you've installed a custom recovery. But then it should go into recovery. If its hanging on that screen, then yes there is a problem.
You haven't provided nearly enough info. What firmware version were you on before you unlocked the bootloader (2.20, 3.18, etc.)? What method did you use to unlock the bootloader? How did you try to install recovery? Post links to what you used, so we can see if they were the right versions.

Yea I want to do it. I know how to use fastboot but this is kinda new to me. All the other android phones didn't require so many steps.
TL;DR - I just want to root my HTC and install recovery/customs roms.
All phones are different. Just because you rooted others before doesnt mean they'll all be the same.
Download twrp 2.3.3.1 and flash it then wipe cache with fastboot then select recovery and flash a Rom.
Before rooting a new phone, you should always read the stickies or at least the faq to find out any quirks or steps that need to be taken to achieve what you want.
I've rooted a Sony Xperia, an evo 3d and this one xl. They were all different.

When I try to flash a recovery this is what I get.
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.
C:\One_X_ATT_All-In-One_Kit_v3.0\data>
Using the HTC One X Toolkit.
Edit: Flashed the TWRP 2.3.1.1 through fastboot in cmd. Now it's just hanging at the HTC splash. Should I keep waiting?
Have you tried to boot into an OS or into recovery?

Also remember with CM10 or other AOSP roms you will need to downgrade your touchscreen firmware. And before you do that you have to supersu and s-off. To be honest I went through all this over the past two days, and when i got to the stage your at (rooted, unlocked, custom recovery) I went with RageXL (a sense rom) and got my phone to a stable state, crossed my fingers and did the super-su by hand, then s-off. It was much easier and less stressful once I had a stable and working phone again.

If you're not even sure you used the right one, are you sure you really wanna be doing this? I mean, you're doing things to your phone that can really screw it up (brick it) if you don't know what you're doing.

Agreed. OP shouldn't be doing anything to the phone they are not completely sure of. Failure to follow this bit of advice can turn your phone a very expensive paperweight.
Also, be aware that with S-on, you need to extract boot.img and flash from fastboot every time you flash a ROM. Failure to do this is a very common cause for being stuck on the boot (HTC logo) screen after flashing a ROM.
I was able to flash a rom through Recovery. I flashed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2328822. Think I will stick with it for awhile. Any other ROMS compatible with 2.20?

all, but if you're s-on you need to fastboot flash boot boot.img whereby boot.img is extracted from the rom you're flashing.
Yes. I meant to say that I had used fastboot to flash this rom. Satisfied now. Think I this is all I will need for now.
Thanks for the help everyone. Much appreciated.
