How do i perform a factory reset with a broken screen - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an htc arrive. i want to send it out to pasture and sell on ebay. Digitizer must be broken because screen does not show anything when i power up the phone.
How can i do a factory reset when i am unable to see anything on the screen?
I know how to delete pics from zune, but i need to clear out all personal info on the phone as well?

Just perform a hard reset on the device.
Make sure the device is off. (remove and reinstall the battery)
Hold down the volume up and volume down buttons together and press the power button while continuing to hold down the vol up and vol down.
The device should vibrate when it boots and then it will go to the hard reset... Let go of the vol buttons and the press volume down to hard reset and press vol down once again to confirm.
You'll know if it works because the device will reboot and vibrate.
You may have to try the procedure once or twice to get it right but it will work and wipe all the data.

If you ever enabled "Find my phone", you can also use the Windows Phone website to remotely hard-reset your phone. It's intended for the case where your phone is lost/stolen and you don't want anybody getting the data, but it works just as well here. Phone must be turned on and connected to the network, obviously.

HTC HD2 not working

Hi,
I turned off my phone yesterday and then when I tried to turn it on again it got stuck at the white screen that appears at first - it shows the HTC logo and the information about the software in red letters. I waited for a few minutes but nothing happened, then I reset it from the button under the back cover and still the same thing happened - it stuck at the same point. Any ideas how to fix it? Thanks so much in advance!
Sounds strange, i would try to do a hard reset, but you´ll lose all your data on the device if you do this!
Any other ideas?

To hard reset your phone which means to delete ALL personal data and settings and have the phone in factory default conditions as if you turned on the phone for the first time after purchasing, press the following buttons:
1. With the device turned off, press and hold the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons, then briefly press the POWER button.
2. Continue pressing the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons until you see this message on the screen:
"This operation will delete all your personal data, and reset all settings to the manufacturer default settings. Press VolUp to restore manufacturer defaults, or press other keys to cancel."
3. Release the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons.
4. Press the VOLUME UP button to perform the hard reset, or press any other button to cancel the reset.
You can also use Clear Storage to reset your device back to factory default settings.
1. On the Home screen, slide to the Settings tab and then tap All Settings.
2. On the System tab, tap Clear Storage.
3. Enter “1234” and then tap Yes.
If you have HSPL applied, you could be able to use MTTY method and upload new ROM.
Mtty tool recovery is nothing to mess with, it is a last resort. If you don't know what you are doing, you can easily kill your phone.
Do a hard reset, if that doesn't work, ( I anm assuming that since this is your first post, you do not have a custom rom ) find a copy of your rom and re flash it. But try severral hart resets first.
Thanks to all of you guys. The hard reset did the trick. I had my data backed up on the SD card so I will restore it from there. Thanks for the help.

Captivate will not hard reset.

I have tried hard resetting my phone, but I cant' get it to work. With the phone off, I hold the "volume down" key and press the power button. If i press the power and release quickly, nothing happens. If I hold it long enough for anything to happen, the phone just starts up normally. What am I doing wrong?
Also, If i reset the phone from the privacy menu, does it do the same thing as the above method?
no idea on the second question but try holding the volume up and down at the same time and then pressing the power button until it starts to boot. Continue holding down volume up and down and release the power button once it starts booting. Let us know if this did it for you.
I think you need to hold the volume control button (both Up & Down together) and the Power button until the Reboot screen appears.
Yea but none of the options will reset my phone...
My son was playing with the pattern lock and locked my phone, recovery using gmail username/pass don't work, so I need to hard reset it...
I've done the "delete all user data" and "delete cache data"
But it hasn't removed the lock... and I see my wallpaper is still the same...
Any other ideas... I am stuck with a $200 paper weight right now!!
Update: Fantastic!! Called Samsung, they said it's a bug and I need to send it in to be reflashed... hell no, back to the AT&T store I go... EXTREMELY dissapointed in AT&T / SAMSUNG.... It appears the standard Vibrant S can reset to factory settings!
Thanks,
Rich

Is there any way to remove a screen lock om this phone?
My son wishes to make one, but cant remember the code
Do i have to drop the phone into the garbage?
No good phone after all.
Hope some one can help me, or my son, with this.

You can factory reset the phone. I'm not sure, but I think if you keep guessing wrong, you'll get an option of logging in to the Google account associated with the phone, and.... well, actually, I don't know what happens then, since I've never done it or seen it.

Try this:
Hardware key Reset:
1. Press the Power button to turn off the unit.
2. Press and hold down the Volume Down button located on the side of the device, then press the Power button and release it.
3. The phone should start with a menu present a list of options.
4. Use the Volume Down button and navigate to the Clear Storage option.
5. Then press on the Power button.
6. Select Yes to confirm your choice of selection.
Your Samsung Galaxy Xtreme S5690 will now reset back to factory default settings and all your data will be erased.
Hmmm...
The phone just start up, and wants the code
No list as you told.
Any other things to try out?
Gaasen
Make sure you hold down the Volume down button long enough. If still nothing, try other key combinations to get boot into factory recovery.
Cant get the "meny" to reset the phone.
If i push and holds the voloume down, press power for 2 sec, release power and still holding the voloume down, the phone loads until the screen lock appears.
I also tryed the other buttons, but just load until screen lock.
Is there any other way to reset the phone, with USB or so?

You can perform a hard reset on the device.
Power off the device.
Press and hold down the vol up and vol down buttons together and power the device on while continuing to hold down the vol up and vol down buttons... The device will power on vibrate and go to the hard reset screen, release the vol up/down buttons and then press the vol down to hard reset and press vol down once again to confirm the hard reset, the device wil reboot and vibrate when the hard reset is complete and all data will be erased.
You can also use the "Find my phone" feature if you have it enabled in settings and then go to the windows phone website and hard reset it remotely.

I've tried a number of time to hard reset my 8x. however, it doesn't seem to want to. It always comes back to the same phone with all he data still intact. I'm trying to clear all data so I can sell the phone. Neither the reset button in "about" or the process described above seems to work. It does all the right things even has the gears spinning. Then it comes back to the settings as it was. OS version is 8.0.10532.166
I have the same problem.
My phone wont be reset
