[Q] Smartphone for AT&T 3G Bands for arround 120? - General Topics

My mother in law wants a simple android smartphone that can be used as a phone, obviously, that has AT&T compatible bands for 3G, that can do tethering (of the 3G), and IDEALLY that is both touch and keyboard.
The phone has to be new, and without contract, so this means an "old" model.
The first one I thought off was the HTC Dream, the Rogers version, but these are very difficult to get as most of them are the Tmobile version.
I like the Nexus One also, even without the keyboard, but again, most of the ones I see are Tmobile and not the AT&T model.
So, any other recommendations?
Thanks!

Sir, there is a thread in place for this:

HELP Buying Touch Pro for Australia

I live in Australia and I'm thinking about buying a Touch Pro from USA since it seems cheaper. I was wondering is there anything I have to look out for that might stop it form working here. Eg. Network issues.
I'm thinking about this one
Hi,
The phone in the link operates on the CDMA network, you'll want the GSM version (the one that uses a simcard). It is also network locked and will need to be hacked/unlocked.
Very cheap though...
Thanks
Some of them say A & T service required for some of the features. What does that mean?
you don't really need to "hack" it. just get someone to create your unlock code for you. you can get it here on xda or even ebay. I believe olinex can provide you the unlock code for a price. I can gaurantee that these guys here at xda are very helpful so dont' worry about that too much.
you should think about what band your provider in aus is using.
Good luck!
EDIT: those "features" are ATT specific and you can make those disappear. check the links on "unbloating" your phone. It's pretty annoying but it does not do anything for your phone if you don't use ATT's network. Check out the thread on flashing for beginners. Read it carefully and if you have questions, be very specific.
Thanks for the help. I been using a jasjam (hermes) with a flashed rom but the hermes is in bad condition so thinking about getting a new phone.
Dood, I'm in Aus and also upgraded to Touch Pro from JasJam.
A warning. You will not get Telstra NextG video calls. The touch pro does not operate on Telstra's band. Just in case you were/are a Telstra man...
Also, you should be able to ebay a cheap as new unit in Australia... I've seen many go for under $300.
A brand new phone for less that $300???
What are you searching "HTC touch pro"?
Touch Pro or Fuze in Australia?
Mate, check the 3G/UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA frequencies used by your provider!!!
The TP AND the Fuze will work AS PHONE in almost any GSM network (beside some Asian countries i.e. Japan) since they are 4 band GSM devices. However, using the benefits of high speed data aka 3G you have to check which band your provider is using. AFAIK Telstra is using 850/1900 which matches the ATT US network while t-mobile and the std. TP use 900/2100. IF you are with Telstra get a Fuze and it will work. People here in the US buy the HD (not offered here in the US by ATT) in Australia to operate it in the US network.
Good luck and don't get screwed.

[Q] Should I buy a used International HTC One X or should I settle for a Gnex or S2?

Hello guys so lately I've been roaming around and thinking about what phone to get... And came across this deal, there is a guy who waves 3 One X, 2 are from ATT and one International 32gb Unlocked/Rooted (Tegra 3 Phone) in excellent shape for $350, the part that has me stopped from jumping in this deal is the massive amount of defective units regarding to Wifi/Bluetooth signal loose because of a faulty antenna. When I go inside the general HTC One X forum it's insane by all the defective phones, being the phone international I wont have a warranty and will be out $350 if this issue is suffered later on by the phone which may happen since I keep them for a year or so.
Another option is getting the ATT version but the fallback on that is that the development is very weak for it due to the patched root access.
Should I risk it and jump on this phone or the att version or should I play it safe and get a Gnex or Galaxy S2 which seem to be having way lesser issues and could be said that are reliable at the expense of performance?
What would you do?
Oscar.

[Q] Unlocking US iphone 5 or Samsung Galaxy II for Europe: possible?

Hello all,
a Greek friend will be staying some months in US. He can get at a good price either an iphone 5 or a Samsung Galaxy S II. This, with a contract of course, Verizon/T-Mobile/AT&T-something.
My pal was asking whether he could get a phone that could be unlocked for usage in Greece, so he can continue using the phone when back. Is it possible for either of these phones? Caveats?
Sorry for not taking the time to plunge into the forum to read, this question was in a hurry.
if you want to use a us carrier phone unlocked, then you have to pay for a termination fee, so it not recommended.
Because the such phone are usually cdma, they are not compatible with gsm so it would be pretty useless to buy a gs2 or a ip5 with a us carrier.
So to answer your question?
not really

[Q] Buying a used sg3 reccomendations

Hi everyone,
I'm finally giving up my droid X2 which, thanks to dragnzkilla, has been running 4.1.2 (buggy but usable considering it's a miracle it works at all)
I've seen the gs3 in my area on Craigslist and was going to meet them at the Verizon store to get it switched over to my unlimited data plan, which I have been told by csr will continue even with the addition of 4g. I am, of course, very interested in installing a custom rom, most likely CM 10.1.
In looking on line, it looks like I just need to unlock and root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35418324), install Goo Manager, get a build with gapps and go to town.
Am I missing anything? Is there anything about the phone (other than the obvious condition of it) that I should keep an eye out for? I'm assuming all the major apps (Netflix, pandora, evernote, etc) work fine. Also, I am traveling to the UK in May for about a week. Any tips on how to get a local pre-paid sim working while I'm there?
Thanks.

That should be it.
As for the UK, I don't believe your phone will work there at all.
MAYBE if you can "flash" to another carrier that the UK supports then you'd be fine.
God bless the American people.
works fine in the uk

Moving to Europe, which phone to buy?

Long story real short.
-Military member, moving to England for a few years
-Need new phone
-Like to tinker. Have rooted/rom'ed/messed with phones in the past (moderate to advanced user)
-Needs to be GSM to work (Currently have AT&T). Would like to use it as I return to USA as well for vacation.
-Prefer unlocked/non-region locked as well as tinker friendly and durable. Id like the bootloader unlocked and read the U still has the locked bootloader.
-Not tied to any carrier... I will have to use the networks and sim cards in Europe.
Looked at:
Galaxy S7 930U. If I get the Euro version (930F), I am reading some stuff about having to use it for 5 minutes in its region before it unlocks.
Nexus 6P looks interesting for faster software updates but the thing is freaking huge. I like one handed operation.
I usually Root mainly just to get full file explorer features and to get wifi-tethering for travel. Tethering is a MUST have for me. Looks like the S7 tethers out of the box for free? or am I wrong? Does the Nexus 6P do the same? I would imagine it is easier since its not tied to a carrier.
I am losing interest in Rom'ing and looking for more stability and just the few features I need. Any ideas? Open to any suggestions. I am leaving soon so I need to make a decision soon. Worse case, I go to best buy and pick up the 930U S7.
Thanks in advance. I wish I had more time before I go to read up on this but It is kind of spur of the moment I am deciding to upgrade.
