[Q] Noob ? Is there a definitive guide...

Hi all.
Just got my Desire S S-OFF and want to know where I go from here ,I don't mind doing the reading if someone can tell me if there is a definitive guide on what I need to do and what I need to do it. Never had an Android before

Thanks for the quick reply , had read the thread then went to look for ginger break but seen in the later posts that it didn't work on 2.3.3 so left it alone. Was kinda lost after that

Sorry to be a p.i.a. tried it and it said rooting flashed up remove car then said don't know what happened .manually reboot to see if you have Super User ...how can I tell ?
As I said ..real noob

Superuser is an application it should be in the app list if installed.

Well, try installing Titanium Backup from market.. if when running it it ask you if allow it or not and it let you allow it it means that you are super user

there is also an application you can get from the market called rootchecer which will just that, it should confirm that you are root

[Q] New To Phone...Questions...Please Help! :)

I apologize if these have ever been asked. I just barely have purchased the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket and have been doing research on it but haven't found a direct answer to some questions so I am really hoping someone here will help me out.
1. When does the Official OTA of the ICS 4.0 get released for this phone or is it already released? (I am waiting for my battery to charge fully for 24 hours as I was told before turning it on and checking for updates)
2. If there is no Official OTA date of the ICS 4.0 in the next few weeks would you recommend I root the phone and put on a custom ROM?
3. If yes to question #2, which ROM? Is it in Beta or Alpha Mode?
4. If yes again to question 2 & no to question 3, where can I get this ROM? Could you please send me the URL to the download and instructions.
I would be FOREVER grateful to any and all that can give me advice on this new phone of mine as I am quite excited to give it a try but I noticed so many phones like this have the official OTA of ICS 4.0 and I would LOVE Ice Cream Sandwich if possible. THANKS so MUCH!

And then you can use roms such as seanz sky ICS, nexus mod ics, mhx, and so on.

I'm sorry, but there's no way that u did ANY research and are asking those questions. We have stickies that answer them all in pretty much the first op. Soo, i'll explain the point xcrazy is getting at. No one minds helping new users, but help yourself first. The search feature is your friend, as well as reading. No one here became an expert overnight, but by reading and researching, and asking valid questions. Not by being spoon fed

Best JB rom for htc one x?

ATT hasnt received the jb update so i want to flash one, but im not sure witch one to do and that is compatible with no issues.
I rather a rom of jb that is completely stock don't need added touches to it or anything. Im a stock guy.
What rom would do for me? There are so many .
Really all i want is the the speed in JB as well as google now. Thats really it if i can get these without flashing a rom please let me know.

If you have been reading you shouldn't be asking what rom is the best you should go pick a rom read the op learn to flash

Yea, and if you read my post, i also ask if its possible to install google now along without installing another whole rom.

Yeah doing these kind of posts will get you just yelled at :S so don't but if you want an opinion on what you would like based on what you want try the Nocturnal MergeX. Though still customisable, Nocturnal is designed to work out of the box with little effort, making it a good choice for those who would rather leave most of the effort to the experts.
So give it a try

Look man, we aren't necessarily getting angry at you alone (well at least I'm not), it's that some of us people have been around these forums for a long time, and you have no idea how many times this question has been asked. It's not just you, a lot of people do it. It just drives some of us more experienced members crazy to see the same question over and over again, that it brings a little anger out of us.
To answer your question, to start things off it's a matter of if you prefer AOSP or Sense.

I understand how people are, but they have no reason to even reply if they are tired of helping and just want to give me one off **** answers.
Simple as that. People need to change.

All be asked was for the OP to re-describe his problem because it wasn't posted correctly in the first post. And the reason he asked this was because he wants to help, but can't help until he gets the right information.

It looks like you are the one being much too eager to jump down someone's throat. All Arrow44 did was inform the OP that he posted incorrectly (and also asked him to describe his problem further, so he could try to help). Its pretty clear the OP thought he was typing in the "Message" area, when in fact he was typing in the title instead.
Nothing Arrow44 typed was even close to a flame or attack.
Arrow44 is completely correct in that we need MUCH more information, if we are to have any hope of helping the OP. For instance:
1) update by RUU or OTA?
2) What firmware version are you trying to update to?
3) Is the phone modded? Is it rooted? Bootloader unlocked? Custom recovery?
4) Any error messages?
5) What state is the phone in? Does it still boot into Android, or is it stuck on the boot screen?

Moved to Q&A.
Let's all just calm down, it's much too beautiful a day for arguing.

I'm also having the same problem on my htc one xl.
it's currently on 4.0.3
i'm trying to update to 4.1 it completes the downloading but during installation it stops during midway and then restarts, the update is not installed.
my phone is not rooted.
any help would be appreciated.

Backup any personal data, they try a factory reset. User apps or configurations are known to cause problems with OTAs sometimes.

I told him to do so, so he could go to completely another forum (not XDA) and ask this noob question there, where nobody knows him.
Now you get it?
It would be very funny experience for him to find out what other people on other frums know about SGS4 or phone flashing at all.

I would probably get people telling me off and not wanting to teach me... Happens a lot on these forums, luckily the constant S4 questions have kind of died down here and people like myst tend to point them in the right direction instead of just making a fuss about it.

Why not just report it and move on?
Anyhow, congrats on new device, go forth & make it great like you did for sgs4g..
