GS3 is getting too hot - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

My phone wasn't this bad before I flashed the jellywiz ROM. After that, my phone began to heat up with any ROM I used. Anyone know why this happened?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium

I've tried some ROMs that made my phone run hot and others that didn't. It seems there is not rhyme or reason as yo why your phone might be getting hot.
I'd say flash another ROM and see of its still hot.

try a different rom... beans, eclipse, and pa all run great for me. Remember ported roms based off of leaks tend to have wierd issues like that. Part of the reason I deviate from those types of roms. point is; stick with roms that are built from source.

Flash a brand new ROM? I've tried flashing Synergy and it's still hot (though I suspect it's because of the kernel inside.

I'm gonna another ROM. So far, the Jellywiz ROM is just warm every time I use it. It's good as a DD, but the warmth can be disconcerting sometimes. I'm gonna try a new ROM out soon (probably by the end of today.

So far, I wemr back to a deodexed version if the latest verizon OTA and my gs3 still feels warm. I'm thinking of returning it if it becomes too much for ke to bear.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium

I had the same issue. It wasn't hot until I flashed a Rom. Then every time I did anything it heated up. Also I heard if u disable media storage then restart your phone and turn it back on. It will be better. It workerd once or twice. But I had to get a replacement. Dont want to root now

Well, so far, I've already dome the methods and it's working well, but you never know what happens.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium

Well, I decided to unroot my phone and reroot it and so far, it seems to be holding up a lot better than before now that I haven't flashed the jellywiz ROM. I just flashed a deodexed version of the stock Verizon VRLHE ROM and it's holding up really well. GPS however, isn't working, but that's something I don't really use so I'm good with the root. Still thinking of getting a replacement though to be on the safe side.

Wonder if its the devs removing something making it act up.

Well, my phone is back to normal again and I didn't have to return it in the end. GPS works well too. All is well. My power button is a little loose, but it still clicks well and there is no problem with it now. Apparently, the Jellywiz ROM has some RIL issues that causes it to heat up. Unrooting it got my phone back to normal.

Best rom for me.. Is rooted ota ep4d. Update

Wanted to let the 2 or 3 people who read this to know my consensus.
I've tried most the droid charge roms and some of you might not have.
I Odin back to the first froyo and let the updates occur all the way to 2.3.6. Than loaded clockwork recovery through Odin (with auto restart off). Booted phone into cwr instead of booting into os. Than I flashed the superuser zip file in recovery.
So now I'm rooted stock rom and its running the best so far. GPS locks on very well but caused issues with 4g data. Almost flashed 4p radios back into it but than I disabled gps, ran speed test and speeds were good again. Enabled gps and ran another speed test and everything was gravy. So you might have to disable and enable gps one time.
Couldn't be happier with this build.
Update: I've gotten a couple pms asking me.
After I odin the first froyo build to prepare for all the ota updates I skipped setting up any accounts until the final gingerbread update was completed.

I agree. The only thing I don't like about Infinity is its instability and lag.
I agree. Other than the fact that I deodexed it, debloated it, rooted it, and themed it, my phone is stock.
I can put the original "poop color" theme back on the phone along with hiding certain apps and walk into a Verizon Store and the representative will know nothing about me having rooted the device.
The nice thing about stock is that it doesn't have the annoying lag like roms do. Little things between page transitions. So yes it is a pretty good setup

For those people who do know how to root, tweak, and otherwise customize their phones... more power to them. It gives you, the user, power to do what you want with your device which is what Android is really all about; giving the end user power over their own device.

I always suspected as much, so I decided to flash over to the stock (deodexed, rooted, imoseyon and cwr) and phone is finally as smooth as the day I got it. I love Humble and Infinity but the lag and freezing just started to drive me up the wall. I do miss the widget selector though, is there anyway I can get that back?
yea i had bad reboots and lagg on the infinity ROM...put it back to stock rooted..i dont even want to theme cause every time i flash something **** gets laggy..im over it..this phone has no development, and for as long as its been out thats pretty sad..safe to say we wont get any real development section on this phone...i had the droid incredible and they had tons of development..not hatin on the ones that are developing just sayin..

I ran infinity for a little more than a week. Did everything to make sure it was a good flash (went all the way back to ED1 to ensure I was bonestock). It ran great, and I'd still be on it if I didn't start having issues after flashing a theme and then reflashing the stock rom cause I didn't like it (first hotboot was <5 minutes after lol).
I had every intent on going back because it is so good. But after playing with the stock for a little bit, stock really is smoother. Its not a case of infinity lagging so much as stock feeling much more seamless. Its hard to describe, but you would probably notice the difference if you gave it a shot.
Again, not bashing infinity. I might even go back to it because I like some of the features.
On another note. I tried flashing the superuser zip like the OP discussed, but I lost root after reboot and can no longer boot into CWM. What could I be doing wrong?

You have to odin cwr again, make sure auto reboot is turned off. After successful "pass" of cwr, unplug to power down. You have to boot straight into recovery or else you will lose cwr. Than load superuser. If you don't boot into recovery on first reboot the stock recovery writes over cwr.

That was part of it, the issue was that I wasn't keeping root to change the permissions on the recovery installer.
Turns out, I wasn't mounting /system (mounting /facepalm instead).
Thanks for your help.
Yeah, that's a common occurance among the people who are new to rooting and using CWM. I screwed up when I was first doing this stuff too.

I haven't tried TweakStock yet, but so far self-debloated EP4D has been the best experience for me as well. Infinity isn't bad, but as others have said it just isn't as smooth as stock.
I am using this one to. The rest kind of suck Visual Voice mail dont work be nice if infinity had it working Id be using it.
Noob. How did you load clockwork recovery through odin? I just went back to ee4 now its updating all otas. just wanted to know if anybody can give me a hand. I saw a thread where imnuts put out a download of new cwr but too many problems. bricking etc. I just want stock rooted as above.

[Q] - Will you use CM9?

Simple question. If it ever becomes available (no official updated in well over a month) will you use this as an everyday ROM on your G2X?
I for one may try it out, but as most users have reported on the CM website, CM7 is so broken I may just wait for the stock version.
What do you mean by cm7 is broken? And I very likely would use it?

Here's the way I figures it: my stock ROM was bugged, it took soft bricking it and reloading a stock rom, which went buggy and finally flashing CM7 to get a rom which worked correctly. The only broken thing I notice if DSP manager FC'ing and Volume+ FC'ing, if I compare that to the ton of advantages and the fact it's actually stable OS-wise, I'd rather deal with two apps FC'ing at times then not even being able to text or the responsiveness being so poor that I want to throw the phone at someone.
So, yea, +1 for running CM9 if/when it comes out.
Yeah... I don't think cm7 is broken at all.
Gapps not loading for you is your fault, either you did or didn't flash the right zip, or it's just ignorance on your part.
Of course people will use cm9 if it works for our phone, that's a redundant question. ICS would run so smooth for us if everything works.
Just switched to cm7 because of random reboots and programs closing out while using them on stock.
cm7 is ok so far when i restored everything i got alot of force close but thats all due to mixmatch date since i was on 2.3.3 lg and no on 2.3.7 cm7.
but i got everything to work just find for me. Took the rom apart and repacked it with some stuff.
So what im saying is you probably did something wrong. And i would run cm9 if it came out that would be ICS but also ill be moving to a galaxy s2 by the time it comes out.
CM7 is Gold
Transitioning from the stock G2X ROM, to CM7. CM7 is like Goldmaster for this phone, as good as it gets. Awesome battery life. Usability, No random crashes. It just sounds like you picked a bad version to begin with. Now what built, and nightly were you using. Did you try the stable 7.0.0.1.
Always clear cache & Darvik and then proceed.

Can't say I've tried to send a true mms, just huge texts messages which get sent as an mms. Try an app called Handcent; the stock messaging app is to fail!
Before getting throttled for downloading on a 2g network (so much for that 5gigs of "high-speed" data, liars), youtube worked fine.
GPS issue has nothing (well, almost) nothing to do with CM, there's three threads that I know about regarding gps fixes. The only "gps" problem I notice now is that google maps sucks at getting a lock and I have to use Gps Status to get the satelites homed in on me before Maps will get my location.
I am positive the devs will get us a good working version of ics so when cm9 comes out and is as stable and fast as my current setup i will daily drive it for sure
Making bad decision's one at a time.
Once a working ICS-based build becomes available, I will certainly give it a look.
CM7 is working fine for me, i had to flash the gapps, and its working fine. And yes i would run CM9 when it comes out...
For sure I'll use, cm7 rocks! Hope cm9 goes the same way!!

Former Gnex Toro user needs advice

I recently got an SGS3 as a present from my wife for my bday last month, but prior to the SGS3, I had the Gnex Toro with DroidTheory's latest Non-JB, AOKP-based rom and either IMOSEYON's Lean Kernel or Franco kernel. Now, coming to the SGS3, I haven't stayed up to date with the modding/rom'ing scene due to a death in the family, and until now, have only rooted the phone just to install TBU to restore my apps and settings.
So - I need some advice. I know that there's probably over a thousand posts about roms and kernels for the SGS3, but I was wondering if anyone had any personal experience/advice they'd like to throw my way for getting the most (ie battery, speed, features) out of my new phone.
Where do I begin? I thought the bootloader was locked and encrypted, but then I saw a one-button (and it was the entire screen size, but I can't remember the name) app to unlock the bootloader. I did that, but haven't experimented with any new kernels cause I'm a little dense when it comes to what all these new options are and what they mean. Anyone have a quick, high level overview and some pointers?
Thanks for your help
Jesse
First things first BACK UP your IMEI use terminal "su" then "reboot nvbackup" it backs up your imei to one of the phones partitions. The gs3 has a bug and this hopefully will fix it. TreveE also released a zip that makes a backed up zip I'd do that too. Just search for it.
First off, let me welcome you back to not only XDA but the modding/romming scene! Second off, my condolences. I hope all is well with you now though.
First things first though, rooting and unlocking the bootloader. Seems you've already taken care of that using mmmeff's app in the Play Store. This one, correct?
After that, it's all about installing a recovery (duh!). I'm using TWRP 2.2 which you can grab here.
We got recovery setup? Good? GOOD! Okay, so, something that was found as KennyCap up above said is that IMEI (how Verizon identifies your phone as being cool for school on their network) seems to disappear somewhat randomly when flashing custom roms. Luckily, most of us are reckless enough to not care, so, we've ended up with so many people losing theirs that a solution has been found! Several, actually. Here's a thread with EVERYTHING you need to know about IMEI, backing it up, and knowing how to not be that guy who ruined his present from his wife, who now despises him for wrecking his present.
After that, you're golden man. Nothing can bring you DOWN. So, we've got a bunch of options as far as performance goes. Me? I've been using CyanogenMod 10 as a daily driver since that released. Had some strange incidents on certain builds, but the 09/06 build was fine. I just switched over to ParanoidAndroid a couple hours ago, myself. Battery life seems fine so far, as good as it was on CM10 (which by the by, is freakin' insane) so I'd recommend it if you like further tweaking your phone. I'm, unfortunately, a rom kind of guy. I, by nature don't flash kernels. Because quite frankly, I don't know.. if you flash them. So I can't help you there. But, I hope that I've been of some help! Welcome back, and have fun!
until all the kinks..well most of the kinks you can never get them all.. are worked out i am sticking with a stock based. Since you wanted battery, and features i would recommend CleanROM (Current 2.1), CleanKernel(Current 1.2), and the add on pack for the rom to get some other features.
Rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1832070
Kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1850495

I agree with a stock based ROM from your described needs, but the latest cm10 is solid for me with KT kernel.

Sounds like everyone's given pretty good recommendations so far, especially ZServ, props to you on that writeup.
I also came from Toro to SGS3, and I was a little gunshy to flash anything while the IMEI thing got worked out. Currently running a test build of AOKP from Xoomdev (www.blamexoomdev.com) and it's been pretty solid for me so far.
One thing to note, there are still RIL issues with AOSP roms (such as CM9/10, AOKP) that cause very ugly 3G coverage. 4G seems unaffected, but if you're in a low signal 3G area, you'll get drops like mad. Touchwiz based roms such as paranoidandroid, cleanrom, Synergy, etc don't seem to have these issues. Keep this in mind if you're in an area that doesn't get reliable 4G coverage. If you use an AOSP rom and have to rely on 3G you might get frequent data drops.
Otherwise welcome back, my condolences as well, and go have some fun.

I could have missed this as I read through the thread quickly but even if it's been said I will say it again for emphasis:
NEVER EVER FLASH A ROM OR KERNEL FOR THE i9300 (INTERNATIONAL) GS3.
Whew. Okay, I emphasize this because you said you used Franco kernel in the past. There is no version of that kernel for our phone. Flashing it will result in brick that can only be reversed by a JTAG.
Oh, and wrong section RAH BLAH ANGRY WORDS!

Thanks for the info. First, I have been done everything up to the nvram backup, but I just took care of that. It'd be nice to know from the post where the backup is kept so I could keep it offline. Hell, it'd be nice to be able to hot-swap one phone to another. I mean, with an IMEI backup, it wouldn't even matter if you bought a illegitimate phone from CL or something since you could always swap in your IMEI.
I really have never been an CM fan. I toyed with it back on my Droid X, even my GNex Toro, and just felt it was not as feature-rich as the AOKP or the custom variants. I mean, its lean, its quick, but so is AOSP, and I'm not looking for just plain vanilla. I want the bells and whistles. I like the built in rom control of AOKP as a separate settings menu item.
As far as kernels go, I'm really looking for something that gives me better control of the OC'ing and undervolting, but isn't so complicated that I need to bust out my TI calculator just to figure out settings. I like the rom control of the Franco Kernel app. I bought the app, drank the Kool Aid and have been a fan ever since, but have been skeptical, because, to be quite honest, I leave my SGS3 in Power Saver mode and truthfully, I am blown away with the battery life. The one big feature of AOKP I definitely miss is the Fast Charge option. I have 2A chargers in my car and home and would love to get back to charging the device from ~10% to full in 30 min or less. That was freakin' awesome. I'm waiting on my Anker battery, so I'd love to see a little more time squeezed out of the stock, cause that would just make the Anker 2200mah even more "yummy"

How to upgrade the LG G2x P999 to Android 4.1.1 JB via CyanogenMod 10 (Unofficial)

Hi All!
Recently, while surfing through the ocean of ROMs for my LG G2X P999, I came across this ROM. Couldn't find any link related to this on XDA. So thought of pointing the G2X owners to this link:
http://www.androidauthority.com/g2x-p999-t-mobile-cyanogenmod-10-cm10-unofficial-115536/
Flashed it just yesterday. Apart from the Video-recording did not notice any bugs so far. In fact I haven't used it enough to comment on bugs. But I can confirm that Calls and Wifi are both working fine.
If any one knows any prior publication of this work on XDA; please let me know so we can avoid duplicates.

It will run flawlessly for hours and then something quirky will happen and I either cant get data, or cant make calls, or my screen locks up, and im rebooting the phone or looking for a fix on google. Well the problem is that other developers take the vanilla cm7 code and tweak/mod the hell out of it which is always awesome but they put out an unstable build/ROM. If you haven't tried vanilla CM7.2 from get.cm (latest build) then you're missing out. I have had the ROM installed running with mazout's latest kernel for over a week now and its been running extremely well. All and any problems that I experienced with this setup were directly due to ignorance and human error as I'm still a flaming n00b. At the same time they were great learning experiences and easily fixed.

I tried a couple different versions of CM7 over the past few days, and its nothing but a nightmare. It will run flawlessly for hours and then something quirky will happen and I either cant get data, or cant make calls, or my screen locks up, and im rebooting the phone or looking for a fix on google. Wound up just going back to the stock rom with faux123 kernel.

The problem is going to lie in your setup somewhere.
Maybe kernel level as it is known that some G2xs will run great on Trinity but crash on Faux and vice versa. That's just a quick example.
I've run vanilla CM7 for like 13 months now and do not encounter the issues you are describing.
Soooo...what's your setup.

Data does work

so data is working? i thought the data or radio was still broken. does this mean we may get a somewhat stable build of JB?

Data does work but there is issue related to rapid battery drain. Back to my stock ROM. This hasn't been updated since a long time. I wonder if any developer at all is working on this phone or not!

You are late to the party... This device is a dying device. There's 1 dev working on a CM7 Kernel and that's about it. More than likely we will never see fully working 4.1.1 or higher on our device. They tried real hard and are some talented people (our devs), but LG handed them a broken pile of excrement and said, "here you go... Jellybeans!!"...

That's almost all true! I have another old phone, Mytouch4g/HTC Glacier. On that one I am running 4.2.2 and there is a lot of development still on. Huge number of ROMs which can be used as daily drivers. But here we don't even have a perfectly working 4.0.4. But again, no complain to Developers. they have tried really hard with a lot of time invested in this device. All the blame on LG.
This phone is lightning fast on 2.3.X variants. still very much usable. I may be late to the party, but the party is yet not over
I just want to chime in that I used this and the phone is working. The camera seems slower (and therefore more blurry). Other than that everything that I use (I do not use bluetooth, tethering, or wi-fi calling) is working. It's about the same speed as CM7 I had on here before. Don't know about battery since I only just did it.
If anyone knows any tricks for the camera please share. I babysit a toddler and his face is often blurry in photos. I'm pretty sure with this new ROM it will be even more blurred. I have already removed the plastic cover over the camera lens, it's not that issue. This is clearly software as it has gotten slower with this ROM.
We thought we might have a jellybean breakthrough when cm started deving cm10.1 on the p990 and had the courtesy of posting a half port of their work in progress. I believe it's called AdamPK's cm10.1 and is usually found with Mazout360 kernel. Hardware Acceleration Work so no camera, camcorder, sluggish or other problems that plagued the hackfests but they ran into and issue with the radio because O2x and G2x use different radio chips. So you have wifi but no data and battery can't be read correctly but other than that it would be as close to a perfect 4.x as we could get.

Evervolv JB test build - No radio

I may end up making a proper thread in the dev forum but for now, I'm lazy and I'll just mention it here. This is something to mess around with and hopefully help with jellybean progress. Here's my tweet about it or keep reading for the same info.
[Tbolt] Evervolv testing-2013.07.02 Build
Overview:
* JB 4.2.2 w/ our msm7x30-3.0 kernel
* NO radio/data but good to go on wifi
* camera and many other things are working also
* sweep2wake support: enabled in settings -> evervolv -> advanced -> touchscreen
* plenty left to work on and fix but a good start
Please do not use our bug tracker to report bugs for this build
* can let me know on twitter or discuss in the forum thread if I've opened one
* if you want to contribute to Evervolv, upload commits to our gerrit review (we won't see github pull requests)

Sorry if I caused any confusion or wasn't clear but yeah, there is definitely no radio action in this build. I'm not particularly familiar with the RIL stuff and wasn't involved in getting it going for ICS. I'm sure it will get worked out sooner or later with jblack, liquid, santod, and others working on it. That's not to say I won't continue to mess around with it myself but I wouldn't put any money on me making a breakthrough
The purpose of this build was two-fold...to give people something new to play with if they wanted and also just to let the community know about it as another source to draw from and collaborate with.
It's cool. They are working on it together to try fixing data. Your build helped them with some of the other fixes that they needed which was a good thing. Now that a lot of that is out of they way they can focus on the ril. I also found that I can't transfer files over usb. Pretty much everything else works except for what you listed.

Been running this for a couple days now. Really nice. No major problems, except one instance of the phone failing to properly sense touch and slowing to a crawl. A reboot fixed that. Thank you so much for contributing to the cause! It is much appreciated!

This rom worked great for 2 days but now my thunderbolt is bricked. Won't turn on with battery in or out with usb connected. The light inside the grill won't light up either to notify it is charging. All i did was I left it on the charger. It had been doing this before where it would just randomly be off and i wouldn't be able to turn it on but if i took out the battery and tried again it would boot. I had problems with a cm 10.1 build i found searching google where i would get a blue screen and it would crash at random. But I wiped that rom with everything and flashed this to see if this was more stable then that. Don't know why or what caused this. I'd be careful with running this build though.

Your issue isn't due to this rom. I can assure you of that.
You even stated you were having issues with your device powering on prior to running this,
so why you would claim it to be this rom, is unknown to me.
If you flashed the only CM10.1 build for the Bolt right now, from Jblack and got a blue screen, it was from not having the proper ICS radios installed.
If you are going to run any roms using the Official ICS blobs, then you need to be on the official ICS radios or you will get that blue screen you mentioned.
Sounds like you should be more careful about what you flash and make sure you have the necessary radios prior to flashing a rom.
Also sounds like your device has other issues if it won't power on. Maybe it's your battery.
All I can say for sure, is it isn't due to this rom. This I know for sure.
Just wanted to make that clear as your post seemed very misleading to me.
