Have you disabled the touchpad on your dock? - Asus Transformer TF700

So I tried using the keyboard dock with the touchpad enabled for a couple weeks and found its position is just terrible. You try and type and the whole while you're trying to keep your hands off the touchpad and end up making mouse clicks you never wanted to have made.
So I diabled the touchpad and have never found a need for using it again given the device has a touchscreen.
I just wonder if anyone has been able to keep their touchpad enabled and finds it useful, or is everyone like me and disabled it?
Given the size of the keyboard dock, I'm not sure if there is a "good" place for it. I guess it's a nice option for those who feel the need for it. I'm just not person.

So, what do you expect? Adding digitizer so it can detect your palm?
Come on, at this size, it is inevitable to accidentally touch the touchpad when typing.
I wil disable the touchpad on my 14inch Hp laptop too
The keyboard dock and touchpad is a beast when you use Slashtop
right click work very well
just like using a laptop!

I usually disable the touchpad too. On my Thinkpad I use the TrackPoint only, and if there is a desk in sight I strongly prefer a real mouse. It's amazing how much better even the TF700 gets if you connect a mouse.

I normally keep my trackpad disabled as well - only enable when I'm doing certain things that don't require typing...
What Asus *really* needs to do is to give us an option to disable the "tap to click" function and then the trackpad would actually be useful without interfering!!

For the most part I keep it disabled. Sometimes when I'm really lazy and I don't want to reach that extra distance to the touchscreen I'll use it.

That's a great idea, I might actually use the touchpad more if it had that feature!

Nope, I've gotten used to keeping palms away from touchpads on ASUS' netbooks. I do OK with dock keyboard+touchpad, but I prefer to use a real mouse if there's space.

I think that I use more the touchpad than the touchscreen

I expect to be happy. Some others have already offered suggestions.
I also have an HP laptop, 15.6". I never had to disable that touchpad and the on pad enable/disable feature is nice. But I never usually disable it.
I use Splashtop too on my TF700T.

I guess it all depends on the palm size and such.

Palms are not a problem for me. Thumbs are.

I use the touchpad when I'm watching a film. Don't want to have to keep cleaning the screen every few minutes.... Otherwise, it's mainly off.
On my main laptop (Which is an Asus, too (n70sv)), I have the touchpad set to automatically disable when it detects an external mouse. (which is pretty much always).

[Q] A few hours with my transformer

Having received my transformer this morning, all I can say is i love it! however, there are definitely a few issues that are bugging me;
1. the build quality. i constantly feel where the outer rim and the back casing are supposed to join, but dont and its a constant remind of its quality
2. the dock. its brilliant but the putting the tablet into the dock is so annoying and im afraid I may end up breaking the mechanism on the dock. which leads me to my next point...
3. connectivity. the tablet actually has about as much connectivity as an ipad, which is a REAL shame. would it have been so difficult to implement a micro/usb port onto the tablet? i appreciate the sd card slot but personally I'd have preferred the micro/usb than the sd card, but hey atleast the sd card works! you cannot really experience the transformer properly without the keyboard dock so when docking the tablet I am extremely cautious incase i do do some damage.
4. trackpad. the two buttons on the trackpad also feel really cheap when pressing. I suppose this is to be expected when paying as little I have for this tablet.
My final issue, for now, is the constant freezing of the keyboard which i believe has been addressed in a firmware update in the US and not in the UK. Would be nice to get it soon! anyone know when we brits get this update, and any other update there is floating around??
there is a USB port adapter being released by Asus in the near future. Also the trackpad feels real solid to me.

they feel like plastic but they feel robust and sturdy to me, or are you experiencing different issues?
happy with the trackpad buttons too..they're robust..
as for the docking mechanism..you'll get used to it eventually...and it's a lot easier to dock after being used for a while.
I have no problems that seriously bother me. If you don't like it there's always the option to return it. I would not keep something that bothers me that much!
I am just waiting to see if its a case of getting used to it, will only return as a very last resort because I'm very happy with the rest of the tablet as I'm sure the majority of transformer users are!
Dock is very solid. And it has usb ports so I'm confused about your review.

Excellent choice! I think it has a lot of potential. Obviously, the hardware issues won't be resolved but the software will be splendid in a few months!

i think he means why didnt they add a usb to the tablet as well so if you didnt buy the dock you could have a usb port. i think it would have been a nice feature especially on the left hand side of the tablet where the power and volume buttons are. i do like the dock option especially since it adds more battery life to the tablet.
^ Actually the iPad2 has a dock slot (smartass), it's just basically a keyboard, without any of the usefullness of the TF's dock.
The dock has USB ports, yes, but the tablet itself doesn't. I can see where kashifnazir is going with this; I'd like a USB port - even a micro/mini would do - on the tablet itself as well. If I wanted to just grab something of somone's USB stick, I might not necessarily what to root in my bag for the dock every time.
Regardless, it's relatively minor. The Transformer is still the portable computer I've been waiting for since tablets first hit the market.

I sort of noticed this issue too, but try this:
Press the trackpad button all the way out on the edge. Feels cheap doesn't it? Now press the button about halfway between the edge and the rubber bumper that the screen rests on when closed. Now, it feels almost better than some netbook trackpad buttons I've used.
My thoughts after some time on the TF
Charger: It appears that the charger is marginal at best and when used to charge the TF/Dock combo with medium battery remaining the charger overheats and either dies or shuts down until it cools. I have been charging separately and if lots of charging is needed, do it in increments. Seems to work fine. Excellent biz opportunity design a 15VDC 3.0a power supply with a USB3.0 female connector.
Dust: The plastic protective cover was covered with dust when I opened the box. Luckily nothing inside the TF. ASUS needs to revisit the assy and packaging cleanliness requirements.
UI: Would be nice to have option to move soft buttons from bottom to side of screen as they are easier to access when holding the device.
Case creek. My case is solid, but I noticed that the hinge on the dock is very stiff and I can see how opening and closing the combo by pushing on the TF could easily cause considerable stress on the case causing it to flex.
Overall for an early adopted device I am impressed.

I understand, but from a business perspective, I think it would have been a horrible idea for Asus to include a USB/micro USB port on the tablet itself. They wouldn't have the potential to sell nearly as many docks, and getting consumers to buy both parts is how they've chosen to market the Transformer.

[Q] Anybody notice that the dock keys are a little hard to push?

The dock is very solid...it seems well built, and if the latest firmware fixes my unresponsive dock issues....I'm a happy camper....
I just wanted to ask...do you think that the keys take a little bit more pressure than normal to make a consistent input? when I type, I'm missing letters because I'm used to typing on a keyboard that has light keys.

Absolutely. I work on a Thinkpad T510 every day (T60 prior to that) and my Transformer's keyboard requires a heck of a lot more pressure to make a key stroke.
For me its quite the opposite the keys are very easy to hit and type with.

I think you need to give your fingers a workout
They're pretty normal to me here, at least when comparing to my Logitech G510 gaming keyboard and the M11x keyboard.
The only thing is that my SPACEBAR seems a bit louder than the other keys when pressing. Probably due to its shape and suspension in comparison to the other smaller ones.
For some reason, when I hit the delete key - it deletes two characters most of the time instead of 1. Anybody else running into the same problem?
My dock types ultra smoothly. U must have a defect

This might be possible through the kernel driver..
Has anyone looked into it?

i wasnt sure if thats what he meant but i thought id rule out the obvious first
personally i find the touchpad speed spot on.
Little bump on his thread.
Imo, It's the acceleration that needs to be set to 0.
The TF ain't no laptop. If you insist on using the touchpad instead of the touchscreen, then go out and get yourself a nice laptop.
Why do people buy a tablet and then insisting on using it like a laptop? I don't get this.
Sometimes it can be convieniant to use the touch pad instead. For example to multitask between apps: typing into one, tap through to an IM via notification, then hit HOME on the keyboard and already have the touch pad cursor lined up over the icon for the app you were originally in.
I personally find it to be the best touch pad I've used, but then again I am weird and kind of like touch pads more than mice for non-gaming tasks.

For those people who complain about the touchpad, I give you 2 options to solve this huge life and death problem.
(1) Get an ipad.
(2) Get a screw driver and a pair of pliers and yank out the touchpad.

Gee what a helpful response... I can't believe the guy - like myself - had the nerve to think that the collective genius (and I'm being sincere there) of XDA could - or perhaps already did - come up with a way of decreasing the sensitivity of the track pad. Oh - the nerve of us for asking a question.
Seriously - responses like yours are patently unnecessary.

Is there a way to select or install a different mouse cursor for our transformers?
I would love to know the answer to this as well...I would almost think about rolling back because of the pointer chance.

Agreed. It just needs to be a bit smaller for pointing precision. It seems like when you see people with fat fingers trying to press buttons on a really small touch-screen... frustrating.
I like the new circle cursor, makes it easier to see what you are clicking on. The old one was too small and looked tacked on, was jaggedy etc, this one looks built in and nice.
I hate it. I bought the dock for a laptop like experience. To use the touch pad like I would on a laptop for editing, selection and such. I didn't buy it to be an extension of a toy and mimic a finger press. That makes no sense. And it makes no sense to treat a usb or bluetooth mouse different than the trackpad. If they're going to change it then give us a choice, otherwise, leave it alone. A bad arrow is better than no arrow. At least that felt precise.

I'm happy with it, and I don't think it needs to be any smaller to be precise. It's pretty easy to comprehend where the center of the circle is, I think. It's also a log easier to spot on the screen than the arrow cursor.
It would be nice to have a choice, though, for those folks who prefer the arrow.
The circle is not the problem technicly, when u scroll it seperates from itself, and scrolling is very very very jittery and laggy now, if u dont put two.fingers reallllly close together then u get the zoom option that hardly works aswell by just zooming by a little bit, its just a very horrable mess, again if they just switched to the circle and everything else was the same, not a big deal,

mouse pointer after 3.2 update

Hi guys
After the 3.2 update i have very strange mouse pointer
Can I change this?
Thanks
yes the circle pointer lol nobody has made a mod to change it back as of yet.
i think if you use a BT/USB mouse it goes back to the normal pointer...
why they thought a circle was better is beyond me.
i really don't understand what are they thinking about
No offense to the OP, but IMO people need to search more before posting new topics. This is roughly the 23rd thread on the crappy new circular pointer. If for no other reason besides ease of reviewing information, consolidating your comments within an existing thread on the topic is beneficial to everyone.
The circle lets you see how the touchpad is detecting inputs when you're doing gestures. Other than that, it seems pretty useless. Just some fancy fx thing.

Because it also shows your trackpad gestures, I really like it, and can definately see a benefit with it over a regular pointer.
MAKES THIS THING USELESS FOR RDP/VNC!!!!
Man, Asus has been good about stuff, but this is the worst idea ever.
The new pointer is just awful. I was hoping to see a fix for it already
Circle pointer is more intuitive than the original pointer, when used for gestures, scrolling, clicking etc. It simulates ones actions on the screen, on the trackpad. It ofcourse changes to the normal pointer when using external mouse. I have been quite impressed with its usefulness but then horses for courses. Just use it for a while, and your horizons may broaden

I really hope don't make a rash change to the new pointer (which I like), based off a few people that "don't get it"...
For those of us that "do get it", seeing the gestures is invaluable.
Rather than "rash changes", why not give us the option to change it back?
Hide it in the Settings page if you want, but I thought Android was supposed to be about choice and customisation, not just "Do things our way and like it".
If that was the attitude I was interested in, I'd have sold my soul to the iCult of Jobs by now.
All that posturing aside, I had about 3 minutes with the new cursor before RMAing my dock, so I haven't had a lot of time to see if it gets better with use.

Choice an customisation is all there, where would you like me to start, but then a line has to be drawn somewhere wouldn't you say? It's not like iphone/ipad where one is only allowed to change the icon position on a screen, is it now?
Regards your RMAing the dock after 3 minutes; not enough time. Should have given it atleast 5 minutes

I can see the usefulness, but have you it makes scrolling in the browser jerky and annoying, as if you don't move your fingers perfectly straight, it zooms in and out. It also is incredibly non-precise when doing anything in an RDP/VNC app.
I'm all for giving a one button click in the settings that will give me my old one back. Just because it has a few benefits (gestures) that some of you like, does not mean that it is great for everyone.
Well for some of you who don't like it they would either have to use external mouse or play with it, hoping that Icecream Sandwich/Asus FW would grant them their extra setting. For the time being though they are lumbered with it. Simples tch tch

I've found myself using the screen a LOT more since the 3.2 update. Trying to use the trackpad is rather batty IMHO.
At least put crosshairs in the circle.
I think it's a lot better, much to my surprise. Aside from the vertical scrolling that is very counter intuitive with a trackpad, it has several awesome advantages... the pointer stays in place when scrolling, the scrolling actually WORKS (try it on 3.1 with Tapatalk, then agree with me), it dosen't lack precision as after all, it's in the center of the circle that the click will originate. Pinch to zoom is cool and I rarely get it instead of scrolling.
All in all I like it, and I also agree that this sort of things needs a setting to be restored as it's unavoidable to piss off many users.

^^ I agree, the circle is fine. I actually liked it a lot. Just wish the circle is a bit smaller, that's all.
