New guy - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hello guys I just got may galaxy S3 from a friend. I think the bootloader is still unlocked after I received an OTA today. I don't have root or recovery. I just want to be sure I use the correct root and recovery method. Could someone point me to the one they used on this build with success? I would be greatly appreciated. I did look but none are specific enough for me to be sure I'm using the correct one.
Is my bootloader still unlocked if it says (custom)?
Again I appreciate any help

Welcome! In order to unlock your BL in the first place you must have had root. This is a good thread on rooting, unlocking, and flashing recovery/ROMs/kernels:

As long as you have one of the stock builds listed in section 2 of that thread you should be good. The EZ-unlock app should be able to tell you if you're BL is unlocked.. also if you reboot the phone, if the samsung splash flashes for a split second (the one before you see Samsung Galaxy SIII), then you're prob unlocked.. if you see it for a few seconds then you're prob locked

Man I rooted flashed recovery in rom manager. (recovery wouldn't stick) so I flashed it again after making a nandroid and ended up having to recover a soft brick at 4am. Thank God for puremotive's guide on how to recover from it I was able to be back up. I don't know what went wrong. Because I didn't have busy box. Maybe I shouldn't have used the latest recovery rom manager flashes? I'm on stock with root and afraid to move anywhere! Anyone know how to make recovery stick on stock rom? I've never had this happen. Usually I would be OK and on to try AOSP on other devices uve had. Right now I'm rooted on stock rom with bootloader unlocked and have OTA root keeper in case I get another OTA. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Take care

Ok, issue is probably that you used the current version 1.4 I think. In the app description in the playstore is a link to older versions, you want 1.2. The new ones are unlocking, but it's not sticking. There is also a link in the current root guide somewhere, but direct from the play store is fine.

Let me be more specific because I may have had a locked bootloader.
I received the phone yesterday from my friend. He did unlock the bootloader with the app. I installed the official OTA from Verizon as soon as I got it. I rooted it. I didn't bother trying to unlock the bootloader because after the OTA when it booted it said custom with a lock symbol on boot up. I rooted and flashed the latest recovery from rom manager. I'm sure I picked the right phone. I made a nandroid but my recovery wouldn't stick. I remember it saying something about Co firming something about a recovery and I could have chosen yes. It sounded like CWM wouldn't stick if I choose yes?
I don't know if the OTA locked my bootloader back up?
I would like to try again. Any of you guys no how to make recovery stick on stock rom? I would like to try paranoid android. What recovery should I be on to flash this jelly bean based rom? I would really appreciate anyone who knows how I screwed up or has went straight to JB from a specific CWM recovery. I'm also not sure if I should said yes or know when in CWM when asking me that recovery question. I wish I remember what the question was

The app doesn't actually check the bootloader. It just keeps the info in the app data. Meaning if you unlock with the app then uninstall ezunlock and then reinstall it won't know if you're locked or unlocked.

I'm 90% sure you wouldn't have been able to install the OTA if your bootloader was unlocked. The 'custom' on the boot doesn't mean that, and now that I think of it the fact you saw that proves that you aren't unlocked.
If you're still stock rooted then download the EZ unlock 1.2 from the link above and also go find EZ recovery on the market. Do not use the market version of EZ unlock. Now it doesn't matter what order you do it in but unlock your bootloader with the app them use EZ recovery to flash your recovery. Then you're all set to flash ROMs.

Clean Rom question for Rogers

Hey guys,
Just wondering if I install clean rom on my rogers phone if I will have all the AT&T branding? If so is there any way to remove it?
Also I have rooted and flashed my phone with cwm. How do I got about flashing roms? On my captivate I booted into recovery mode and selected install from sd card. Is there a way similar to that for this device or do I have to use the cmd promt?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
You can use clean ROM I'm pretty sure it's de branded, but I'm pretty sure you will need to get a superCID first. There's a one click method in development. As for flashing yes it is the same, but I would recommend you use TWRP in the place of CWM. You can find a flashable zip in the development section as well. Just flash TWRP through CWM and your all set. Would link the topics for you but I'm at work. Just head over to dev section it's all there. Also if you want a Rogers based ROM I'm using king cobra 1.2 and I like it. Happy hunting.

No reason to change a Rogers phone to superCID. Just flash the rom of your choice in recovery.

back in the early days of he HOX ( a whopping month ago) you had to flash a BASE before you could flash a rom. It has since been discovered we can flash kernels and boot.img in the ROM without a problem.

By chance does anyone know how to multitask on the cobra rom? I've hit the multitask button on the phone but apps don't display like they used to?
Wait just so I can get something cleared. I just bought a stock rogers phone I should...
1. Unlock bootloader via HTC Dev
2. Root
3.supercid?????
4. Relock my bootloader and flash 1.85
5. unlock boot loader and flash cwm?
6. Flash rom of choice and profit
I'd like some clarification too
I'm in the same boat. I have a Rogers 1X currently on 1.73
I have rooted the phone and supercid. But I'm curious as to how should I proceed.
What are my next steps?
1. Unlock bootloader via one-click method
2. flash cwm
3. Flash latest cleanroom?
Any help is appreciated
I have Rogers HTC One X on 1.73. I thought it was:
1. Unlock bootloader
2. Root
3. Get CWM Recovery
4. Copy Cleanrom ZIP to SD Card
5. Follow instructions on the CleanROM thread.
What is this SuperCID and relocating boo loader stuff about?
Those of us lucky enough to be AT&T customers have to trick HTC into letting us unlock our bootloaders. Supercid lets us do that. If you have a Rogers phone you don't have to worry about Supercid.

supercid is a good safeguard for us since the rogers ruu is a POS. it allows us to be able to ruu an att ruu if something goes horribly wrong.

TWRP is an alternate recovery that is actually supported on our devices.
So you guys all recommend twrp? And I don't have to root first, I can just unlock the boot loader and proceed with the steps listed above? Also I plan on installing clean Rom 4.0 is there anything else I would have to do? Thanks for all the help.

i recommend TWRP because it's officially supported and it's easy to use.
After you unlock the bootloader you can flash a recovery. being rooted doesn't matter since your going to flash a pre rooted rom right away anyways.

(sorry of the non-hyperlink, I'm not allowed)
You have everything you need. If you're rooted, unlock the bootloader using the app you have, flash the non-touch cwr 6.0.1 or 6.0.2 using the ez recovery app or rom manager, then download cm10 and appropriate latest jelly bean gapps, boot into recovery from rom manager or pull battery hold volume up+home +power. From there, do a nandroid backup first, then wipe data, cache, system, and dalvick. Now flash your cm10 or any other rom, then your gapps, profit.
Edit: no over the air updates should be accepted or you can brick that shiny phone.
The whole process is much simpler now that the bootloader is unlocked.

Depends if you're on an AOSP based rom. If so, you'll need to flash a stock kernel and a full wipe is also necessary. Otherwise you should pretty much just be able to dirty flash over any stock based roms.
No, it won't relock the bootloader. That's a separate process.

Getting a replacement few questions.

I discovered a scratch on my screen and need to get this replaced. Right now I'm on Verizon running Android open Kang project jb with an unlocked bootloader.
I want to return my phone to barebones stock do i just flash the stock zip in odin and the bootloader and I would be good to go?
Also if I get this replacement in there different baseband version does this not allow me to Install aokp or other roms

Yes, just Odin stock G1 or F2 image, the do a factory reset, clear all data cache, you should be fine. Your replacement should be a G1 version and you can install any rom over it.

We did, but I actually went thru the process and it doesn't lock the bootloader using Odin.
And if for any reason your bootloader STILL isn't re-locked, you can simply use EZ-Unlock (the app) to do so.

HTC one x question about twrp

Hello. I am new to the HTC one x coming previously from an HTC inspire. I am with att. I followed the directions and unlocked the bootloader. I have been reading and noticed S-Off is still being worked on. I'm Confused on what my next step is to load a custom ROM. Sorry I know this has probably been answered but I'm still confused. Can I do the next set of steps without a computer and just do it from my phone? I downloaded an app called recovery manager not sure of that will help me out. Thanks for any help you guys can provide. I'm on 2.20 and 4.0.4 thanks again.

I think at that time after unlock of the bootloader you will need to install a recovery software the one we use is TWRP i would stick with 2.2.0.0 and install it thought goomanager that is avaliable though the play store.
Instructions : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1677447
To use goomanager I need to be rooted though right?I don't think I'm rooted. Farthest I have gotten so far is unlocking the bootloader. And I'm not sure what to do after that. I'm not sure if I can do the rest from my phone (which I hope I can). Thanks ks for your help.

You can just flash a custom ROM, which will have SuperSU or SU cooked in. Only need to flash SuperSU if you want to stay on stock ROM and have root.
you made your situation sound different. the steps i take is use my token, flash recovery, then flash a rom or supersu depending if i want a custom rom or keep using stock.

How to unlock the bootloader of a Verizon Galaxy S3 (i535) running 4.4.2

Hey everyone,
So, I have a verizon Galaxy s3 4g (i535) and I have been searching for days now for a way to unlock my bootloader so that I can flash a recovery and then flash some new ROMS. I tried flashing a recovery through odin but it failed, I tried flashing it through the apps available in appstore like TWRP Manager, ROM Manager, Flashify even used the terminal emulator and then entered the code to flash the recovery image I had in my sd card etc but everytime I use these tools it says that the recovery has been flashed and then when I reboot to recovery, I get the screen which says that a wrong version of android was flashed and that I should contact verizon and that screen keeps on coming even when i restart the phone, until I get my phone into download mode and then restart it. I have read alot of threads but couldn't find any at all. So is there any way to unlock my bootloader or to flash a recovery and then flash ROMS without unlocking the bootloader?
Would be really thankful if anyone could help.

When the bootloader is locked, especially on this specific phone the SCH-I535 your stuck with it and there is no way to unlock the bootloader. You can't run custom roms or a custom recovery either
You can however install safestrap as a recovery and there are a few bootloader locked roms you can also install

You do realize this photo proves nothing, right? This post could just as easily come from someone with an unlocked bootloader who subsequently flashed AOKP and also the VRUDNE1 modem. I'm using SlimKat with the same modem, doesn't mean my bootloader was locked with the VRUDNE1 4.4.2 update.

Amen to that man, people don't seem to get that the bootloader cannot be unlocked once the OTA is taken. I grow seriously tired of repeating myself a million times

So what's the deal then? You know there's a $1,400+ reward for unlocking it if you're serious. I'll gladly give you props for being first if you're right.
