[Q] Download OTA update manually - General Questions and Answers

My Sprint Galaxy S3 is rooted and I wanted to know if it is possible to download and install the OTA updates manually instead of removing the root. I understand that I can remove the root, update, then re-apply the root, but I was wondering if there is an easy way to do this.
I'm currently running the stock ROM.

[Q] Cannot Update to New OTA VRALHE

Ok, I am running a stock rom rooted with no frozen apps. When the OTA tries to install it fails and when I try to use Kies the message " Your device does not support the update of Software via Kies" or something to that effect. I have never unlocked the bootloader, flash roms, or installed custom recovery on the device. Could I possible use OTA rootkeeper to unroot then check to see if the OTA will download and install? If that does work would I be able to restore the root? I don't guess I really need the new OTA but I want to be able to get JB when it comes out without any issues. Just as an added not it is currently running VRALG7...

[Q] Receive OTA updates on Rooted phone

Hello everyone,
I'm a noob to rooting and the whole flashing custom ROMs.
I rooted my Verizon GS3, installed ROM Manager, and flashed CwM Recovery. I then installed a "stock recovery" file in hopes of receiving OTA updates from Verizon w/o losing root. However, after installing the stock recovery, I lost root access.
My question is: can I receive Verizon OTAs on a rooted phone? If so, how? Any help is greatly appreaciated.
BTW, anyone know when JB 4.1 will be pushed to vz customers OTA?

Yes you can receive OTAs on a rooted stock setup, but you want to block these OTAs using something like OTA root keeper and don't install these updates as it will break root, and can cause a bunch of other headaches and problems. If you really want stock wait till a dev roots the latest OTA update then flash that to keep root acess. It will likely be a while probably 2013 at the earliest before Verizon pushes the JB update. If you want JB take a look at a custom ROM such as CM 10.

There is a thread with a ota updater for stock rooted and unlocked users. It lets you stay rooted and unlocked and get the updates. Not sure if it works with a custom recovery flashed though. I think its in the android development thread

Two other possible Options:
Can try this from cj64: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1964502
might be more than you're looking for or not apply since you didn't mention about (un)locked bootloader.

[Q] Unroot help

Hi
I rooted my note 10.1 quite a while ago (~6 months)
The method I used I believe was to flash something using odin (cf autoroot? )
Anyway I just wanted root to be able to use sixaxis but was happy with stock rom. Now it has been a while I would like to update my rom and by going into su and temporarily disabling root I can download the ota update from samsung but it refuses to install.
Does anyone know a way to just remove root so I can install the ota update and not have to do a full wipe.
I could download the rom from samsungfirmware and then install with odin but would that not require a wipe?
Thanks
Does anyone know a way to just remove root so I can install the ota update
No suggest you use Kies .

[Q] Can I safely use a manual upgrade via cyanogen stock recovery?

Since one of my device didn't get its OTA yet can I safely use a manual install via cyanogen stock recovery? Does this process safely as OTA? I hear about some problems with the manual upgrade.

S5 5.0.1 Update OTA or Odin?

I have a Galaxy S5 and it's on 5.0.1 Stock not rooted or Custom recovery. I want to install Blisspop 6.0.1. How would I go about doing this? Is it ok to install the 6.0.1 OTA and still be able to root and install custom recovery?
Edit: Ended up just OTA. Mod delete thread please??
It's probably easiest to update OTA, since it will preserve your apps, data, & settings. I wrote a step-by-step tutorial on how to update OTA to 6.0.1, install a custom recovery, and root. Here you go...

I believe blisspop is still based on 5 firmware. If you update you'll just have to go back to OK4 firmware to run it.
