Hey, small question here. I'm going to buy a used Nexus S from someone in the U.S, using T-Mobile. I currently have the Motorola XT720, and I have Videotron as a carrier. (Quebec, Canada). I just want to know if I buy the T-Mobile version, will I be able to use my SIM card (that is currently in my XT720) then have 3G connection with data?

Vidéotron uses the 1700MHz frequency UMTS, same as T-Mo, so it should work fine. Make sure you get a i9020T and not i9020A.

Just wondering, I'll get 3G with Data?

Hey NSers.
I bought a Nexus S just about the week it came out from Best Buy, but I've decided to move on to another phone. I had thought that purchasing it from Best Buy meant that it shipped unlocked, with no specific carrier, but I just tried an AT&T SIM card in the phone, and it gets no service.
I called T-Mobile, but the woman I spoke to informed me that they couldn't request an unlock code because it's not a phone they actually support.
So I'm wondering how I can unlock it.
Right now, its bootloader is unlocked and it's rooted, if that makes any difference (I'm hoping there will be something easy I can do that doesn't involve contacting either Google or Samsung).
Thanks in advance for any guidance.
your nexus s IS unlocked as of google phones.
the problem is that the nexus s does not support (hardware) AT&T cellular bands.
there is a specific model of the nexus s (I9020A if i'm not wrong) that support those AT&T bands.. sorry.

Oh, really? I thought it supported AT&T GSM bands, but not the 3G bands.
And no worries. It's an i9020T, so maybe it's unlocked but still works only with TMo. Darn.

I think he meant to say it does not support at&t 3g bands. It should work on any GSM carrier, but may not work on 3g.

Right. But if I put in an AT&T SIM, it should work with AT&T's GSM frequencies, right? I'm really not looking forward to calling Samsung tomorrow.
I should go to best buy and ask if you can swap it for a i9020A.

I9029A isn't sold in best buy. I'd go to AT&T and get a new sim card. Your phone should work just fine on AT&T, u just won't have 3G.
I've had a similar experience with the Canadian carriers, however if the carrier supports GSM bands it will work (like previously said) it's when the carrier only supports HSDPA (like Koodo in Canada does) then you need the specific Nexus S (i9020A in your case).
You could also try adding the APN to see if that will allow you to connect (Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names (APN)) - the details can be found on the forums / your carriers website.
Works for me.

Works for me. I live in NYC, and I picked up a Nexus S at Best Buy over the Easter break as a quick temp phone till I got my Captivate fixed.
No 3g, but it certainly works on Edge. Makes calls, data works, syncs with google apps, etc.
Maybe you're just in a poor reception spot for ATT...
Thanks for the advice. Will retry. I'd wanted to confirm AT&T would work before I put it on eBay.
I just bought the i9020A model Nexus S, and after research I found out that its meant to be used for ATT. I have T-Mobile and I am not getting 3G Network because the bands are different. Now people are telling me that if I unlock/root it, I might be able to get T-Mobile bands. Is this true?

Nope - it does not have the hardware to support the AWS HSPA frequencies. It has quad band GSM (So you'll get Edge service fine), but not HSPA.

Hi, everyone, I am new here in US, and have got an sim card from AT&T. But when I put it into my Nexus s bought in Europe, it cannot work in 3G mod. My phone is i9023, and the radio, or so called baseband is I9023XXKD1
It is already unlocked, and I am wondering if it is possible for me to let it working in the 3G mod of AT&T by flashing a new baseband. Does anyone know? Thank u
Le sigh...
Unless your Euro Nexus has 3G on the 850/1900mhz bands (AT&T 3G bands), you won't get 3G on AT&T.

If this phone is anything like the orignal nexus one networkwise, it should work with T-mobile 3G.

Don't think so. Why are you interested?
I have a nexus s from wind mobile w and because I moved they don't get service so I need to switch and don't want to buy a brand new phone. I just bought this one in December.

Are videotron or mobilicity available in your area?
Unfortunately no, I moved from the city to a small town so I have to use bell, rogers or telus

Well, the only difference between i and a is the radio hardware. Go find out what you need before starting
Yea that's what I was hoping I could get info on the part I need to swap out . I'm sure I could do it I'm just not sure where to find it

You could, but you would have to tear the phone apart, flash a compatible radio(and possibly rom) without breaking anything

Would it be possible to use an i9020a carrier with my i9020t nexus s? I'm not worried about losing the 3g, if I can make calls and text that's good for the time being. Thanks guys!

I regret to inform you that this isn't going to happen. You said you have an i9020t from WIND right? WIND uses the CDMA network. Rogers, telus, bell, (and many others) use a GSM network. If you put in the Sim your phone won't read it properly. I'm sorry but it looks like you need a new phone unless you want to risk swapping hardware and destroying your phone. Even if you did swap parts I don't think it would work ad well as you think .
As suggested sell your Nexus you'll get a fairly good price for it. You could buy a used i9020a after. Sometimes used ones can have problems though.. I say you should sell it and find a way to get a new one

I was afraid of that lol. My only question is winds away zone uses the signal from robelus? If my phone can get the signal away couldn't it get it from there sim. Again I'm not concerned if data doesnt work seeing as I have wifi

Sprint is the only carrier that sells the CDMA Nexus. Wind uses AWS, which is 1700 MHz UMTS (3G GSM). The i9020t has AWS, as well as quad-band EDGE (2G GSM) for legacy networks.
As far as i can tell, if you want 3G, your only other choices are Mobilicity and Videotron. If those aren't available, Rogers is the only 2G GSM carrier I could find. Neither Bell nor Telus would be an option. They use CDMA for 2/3G and 1900 MHz for 3/3.5G.
This is, of course, assuming that your phone is SIM-unlocked.

Really? I didn't know that. Many of the employees at WIND told me it was CDMA (of coarse I'm in Canada). People having a hard time with their jobs I guess . I was also pretty sure that telus and such were GSM. Have people began switching over?

Nexus S aren't locked to any carrier. They are however frequency restricted, depending on the model (tri-band, unlike Galaxy Nexus which is pentaband)
What does it mean? You can put any SIM in it, but you won't get 3G unless you have the right model for your network.
Here's the specs:
i9020a/t

so 2g will work with any company or only companies with compatible frequencies of GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
if a company's frequency is 1700 and its in the 3G section, then it will work perfectly, correct?

For example Koodo only offers 3G as their GSM service, no 2G.
So if no frequency the company uses is compatible with your phone (none of them matches) then you will not get any service.

Make sure you are actually holding an i9023. Check the model printed on IMEI label on back cover under the battery.
If gsmarena spec is correct, i9023 should work with Wind/Mobilicity but not Koodo 3G, same for i9020t.
i9020a works with Koodo 3G but not Wind/Mobilicity.
Suspect you have the i9020a model. http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_google_nexus_s_i9020a-3920.php

Most unlock website perform SIM(Carrier) unlock. They won't unlock additional frequency support.
Nexus phones came factory SIM unlocked. Should work in India. The quoted site will take your $16.90 and do nothing

For India, you only need phone that support 2100. So all variants of Nexus S will work.
