Extended 4g Coverage - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

So the next two days I'm going to be travelling up along I-95 all the way from florida. And so far I'm noticing that here in Ocala on CM10 I can not connect to any extended 4g coverage toggling airplane or anything.
Anyone else noticing this too? I'll include more cities as it happens. Will flash beans to see if it can connect. Im checking my maps on my phone and wifi tethered to my laptop to see the 4g coverage and it said ti was covered under extended.... what ever that means......

Hi there, I'm not a 100% sure what you mean by extended, but I live in Miami Beach and there are a good few places on 95 where 4G drops off. I think it's just simply coverage you will always have 3G on those places tho. :victory:

Ya when u get near titusville you won't get anything until Daytona... and isn't Ocala off of 75?

Im also noticing that when my dad's iphone 4s says "Extended" that my phone on CM10 Reads R for roaming with 0 service of any kind. I guess this just shows the RIL is borked all up on CM10.

If you get the R go into your network info and make sure lte is selected. Then from there hit airplane mode on and off.. after that verify in the phone info app that lte/ CDMA is set and it should come back

[Q] Wifi bug!!

hello i dont know if this only happen to me, but whe i turn on the Wifi and it shows all the wifi signals, all of them shows full bars, but after i connect to any of them, then appears the real signal, so i know this is not a big deal but its little annoying to know which one is with the better signal because all of them appear full bars when it is not true :S
any help??
It's more of a workaround than a fix but there's a free app called Wifi Analyzer that can show you the exact signal strength in dB of all the signals it picks up, it's a pretty good app to have.

I think your declaration of "wifi bug," is a bit premature, considering the near complete lack of any details regarding the setup of your phone.

I get this sometimes also. Usually turning off wifi for a few seconds and back on will fix it. There are some kernels that have a wifi bug. What kernel are you on?
Other times it can be my wireless signal that's the problem.

My WiFi does weird ****. Fluctuates and whatnot. My guess is it's radio related, as it does it more on the 04_11_M2 radio I'm running than it did on the OTA.
Not to mention the WiFi equipment at my house is hella lame. Plus my house has like 4000 walls all intersecting each other at weird places. And multiple stories. And I seem to be in the Bermuda triangle of wireless/radio waves.
Other than that, solid as a rock.

Any way to improve wifi reception?

Is the problem the hardware? Or can the software be tweaked? Just wanna know because as everyone knows it is horrible on this phone.

Helpful....
and really, 30 feet? that's not exactly far.....
Its not the router, it is the phone. Mine, though it will remember the networks I use, will NEVER reconnect to one when its in range. Signal strength is also an issue. All previous phones I've had have been able to get at least 2 bars of wifi signal at the other end of our house, but the Infuse just can't do it. Drops to the very least signal indicator on the display and will not pull any data.
I've had a bit better luck with Infused 1.6, but it may just be in my head as I don't think that it actually changes anything in the software for wifi over the stock ROM.
There are a LOT of posts about this and there doesn't seem to be an answer (at least that I have been able to find) to it or any work-arounds. This is really my only complaint with the phone, the wifi is absolute garbage. Some have said that its because the phone only does b/g and not N, so if you have N and you can set it to B or G that may be better.

Well from 30 feet away you should have full bars.
But at the op, I know what you mean about wifi signal. I learned though that even though it shows low bars, my speed was still good.
On the other hand, for some odd reason the miui rom made my wifi signal better. I went from about 16 mbs down to 23 down. Maybe a coincidence, I dunno.

I think it's mostly a hardware problem. The consensus among those who own the phone seems to be that wifi reception is average to poor.
I don't have the knowledge to be able to speak authoritatively, but I think software *can* have an impact.
With my particular Infuse, I have better reception with the new MIUI rom posted by Mikey than anything else I've tried (almost all of them). I get full reception - "excellent" - in locations where on any other rom I would have "fair" or "poor"...
I don't know if this makes sense but that is my experience.

While Strych is being rude (normal from his other posts) I have to agree that it might just be your situation.
My router is on the ground floor and I can use my wifi from the third floor in my house.
Then again I've used Wifi Analyzer (from the market) to test the channels and see what wans were overlapping mine and select one that was empty with good strength.
I also tend not to flash beta roms and then wonder why things aren't working as expected.
If you want help with your issue, you may want to post in the Q&A forum and describe what you're running, what problem you're having (specifically), and what you've done to test/fix the problem. Otherwise, if you're just ranting, I can understand that as well.
Hmm well a lot of helpful tips. I will be purchasing a brand new router. The one I have is just a basic Linksys. So ill upgrade the next level up. Idk I've never been able to get great reception. But on the flipside Ive always used a basic router.

What were you on before? AT&T Froyo or Rogers Gingerbread?
One of the problems with Rogers Gingerbread were crappy TCP buffer settings - CM7 had the "better" AT&T settings for a long time until it was updated to the new UCKI3/I4 settings. This would explain faster WiFi performance regardless of signal quality.
Signal quality has always been fine for me. Froyo has some annoying power management issues where the wifi chipset basically dies and needs to be disabled/reenabled to reconnect (This is actually common across many devices with the BCM4330 - happens a lot on the Tab 10.1 too, and in that case it's sometimes so bad that it hoses up the lockscreen.), Gingerbread seems to have fixed the wifi-death issues on our devices.

How is Wi-Fi?

Seems in the few reviews I've read Wi-Fi signal strength is not all that great, and this worries me. Last year when I had the HTC Sensation it also had really bad Wi-F reception, often dropping signal when I went in certain rooms in my house.
Would really appreciate some feedback from those already using the Rogers or AT&T version of this phone. Is Wi-Fi signal strength good, bad, or somewhere in between?
I personally don't have my phone yet, should be getting it this friday. However other people have been reporting that the Rogers version has had spotty wifi reception.

Yeah that thread actually made me create this one. I want to know if others are having issues or if its just certain routers.
Hopefully someone with the AT&T version can chime in pretty soon.
might be worth researching if it was an 802.11a/b/g/n router it was communicating with, and what chipset the router uses. Make/model can figure that out though.
Yep, I can confirm that the WiFi has been a bit spotty. Not horrible. When I'm in my living room, maybe 10-15 feet from the router, it's aces. In my bedroom though, through 2 walls and maybe 50 feet away, it can go up and down, but I've only noticed it once or twice in the past week.
Once, however, as I was leaving work for the day, the phone reported that it was still connected to WiFi, even once I got a mile or so down the road. I had to turn wifi off/on again before it resumed normal operation.

Yeah, I am hoping that the AT&T version doesn't have the same problem too. I know that the Rogers and AT&T version are the same hardware but it seems like it is a software issue.
Hopefully, *fingers crossed* the AT&T version doesn't come with the same problem and has already fixed the problem in the software.

Yeah, someone here wrote that and it will likely have the same problem unfortunately. However, we don't know at the store how far away the router is or even how good the quality of the router is.
So you have to make sure you base your analysis on where the problem lies by first having a baseline. Meaning right now I know that with my iPhone my wifi work very well and has great coverage with my Cisco E4200. So once I get my HOX I can then compared it to see what the difference is.
Follow a process like that then we will be able to tell for sure if the AT&T model does have a wifi problem and it is a problem with the handset and not some other external factor.
Same problems here ...

Regrettably, I seem to be having similar problems. Like you, I also get situations where my phone reports that it's still connected to my WiFi network, both at work or at home, yet I could be 1-2km down the road.
I certainly hope this issue is resolved soon. I use an automatic profile manager that needs to detect WiFi connections/disconnects accurately.

that's exactly what that option does. starts to kill the wifi in order to improve battery life. I think it increases speed/range when the screen is on, but it's still never set to maximum power/speed.
I think we are going to have the same issues as the Rogers version. I've played with the demo unit at the Corp store several times and had wifi drop out about half of those. The signal strength was full, but that's all I know of their setup. Today I had to turn wifi off and then back on before it would even connect. It's a bummer that HTC has done such wonderful job on everything else, but we still have spotty wifi on their flagship device. I am preordering tomorrow anyway though. Hope it can be fixed with a software update down the line.

I'll test with this setting on today and see how it effects my wifi performance / battery. When I was running b/g/n on my router I did speedtests with the option both on and off and it made absolutely no difference in the speeds and the connection would still drop off. Literally right next to it my iPhone constantly got 6-8 mbps.

I remember with the dreaded HTC Sensation, wifi would often cut in and out and data speeds would be very poor. Looks like HTC's bad habits didn't die young.
AS i mentioned in previous posts. I am having the same wifi issues and i'm on my second HTC one xl. They both have poor wifi performance. I also have the problem where it sometimes stays connected when i leave the house and im 3 km's away.
Feel a little better as the International version got a new update tonight which supposedly resolves the Wi-Fi bug. So hopefully we'll get an update relatively soon.

I contacted HTC with all these bugs. Hopefully, they give me a response. If they do, i will post it here in the forums.

Anybody still having data issues?

I've been using my Rogers HOX ever since it came out but always had random data drops. Tried all kinds of radios (with or without RIL) and all kinds of roms and the issue is still there. Losing data is not the biggest issue but it also drops the battery real quick because it keeps trying to connect.
Anybody ever find a solution to this?
I'm using the HOX on Straight Talk and lately I have noticed that when I have WiFi on for a while, assuming it stays connected, I lose mobile data. The only thing that bring it back is toggling airplane mode or rebooting the phone.
I am on Jellybean, and I am not sure if the issue was present in the stock ROM's.
Yep still having the same problem on AT&T with every combination of Kernel/ROM/Radio you can think of. I can also say that it isn't a "rooted only" problem because a coworker is having the same issues on 100% stock software. There's always that ONE THING that keeps my phone experiences from being perfect. Grrrrrrrr........

Stock 2.20 on Straight Talk. Have to toggle Airplane occasionally. Especially in North Little Rock. ::shrugs::
OP, have you restored your stock setup to see if the issue persists? Basic question, but for the sake of a starting point.
After so long, finaly found the problem. I don't know if it'll be the same for everyone but the problem was Swiftkey keyboard. The moment I uninstalled it, the problem did not reoccur.
I have the same problem and I can assure you its not the phone, I have used many android phones, iPhones, and regular phones on rogers 3G network and they all have the data drops in general like dropping to 1 bar and no service once and while.
You might want to switch your network to wcdma/gsm instead of wcdma/gsm/LTE. If you dont have the correct APN for the rogers lte network it will keep searching for the lte nrtwork causing the data drop. As soon as I turned my lte toggle off the network stopped dropping randomly though I still get those random data drops caused by the network

We had this issue with the rezound, it actually occurred because you flashed different radios.
You had to flash a ruu or a modified one without the system image. See my SIG
So try flashing a ruu, this doesn't explain someone with a stock phone having issues but I bet that's just tower issues

Wow, you might be onto something here. I just installed SwiftKey last night and immediately started having issues. Data has been off-and-on with different versions of different ROMs, and never suspected that my issues may lie within an app that I was using. I was mucking about with radio ROMs and a million other settings, never realizing that SwiftKey was installed right around the time I started having issues on each ROM.
I'm going to jump back to CM10 this evening and see if this was my issue.
THANK YOU in advance! (Thanks button has been hit!) Nice work!
You gotta be sh***ing me! After all this time scouring xda and numerous other sites.starting my own tread it was SwiftKey all along? Wtf? I did a thousand different things. Nothing worked, took off Swiftkey, bam, flawless. I've got a T-mobile GS3 incase anyway was wondering, no, apparently it's not just with htc or AT&T/Rodgers. Weird though cuz my wife has a AT&T GS3 with Swiftkey and has no issues whatsoever... Did you dl your version from the playstore or from a 3rd party? Thanks a million for posting your solution. This was absolutely killing me. God do I hate this stock keyboard though...

Global Mode NIGHTMARE please help

Reposting this from the accessories forum...
Several people recently had their data wiped by installing CM 10.1..
Many of us have done full factory resets with re provisions etc etc..and clean installed a completely different Rom.
After doing so, my IMEI/ERI are still intact, and data has been restored. HOWEVER...
When in an area with no reception (like my f ing house!!!!) I am constantly being prompted to “enable global mode ". This will happen up to 100 times per day and is killing battery life..
Can someone PLEASE help with a fix for this, or even better an all around disable for global mode!?

It could be due to the latest OTA, which does enable global mode. I haven't been able to find out how to disable the constant query of that damned global notification. This only happens when I'm playing a game for some reason. Really annoying, but it's bearable for the most part. Glad to hear that you got your data back though.
I see how it would be agitating to see this in places where you have fringe signal quality. When I'm on the metro, I receive this prompt every so often once we go underground. In this case, it doesn't bother me since I have signal everywhere else. I'm not aware of a method on how to disable it, as I said its infrequent for me, just stating my experience with this nagging notification.

What's bizarre is this didn't happen when I was running the k3 leak before installing CM 10.1, only after.

No having global mode will not affect your bill

I'm having similar problems only I can't even make calls not even to voicemail. I got the global message too
Ok, I am having the same issue. I live in a pretty urban area but at my house and work I don't get the best signal so it is happening may times a day. I only updated to VRBLK3 yesterday and that is the same time this started happening. Wonder if there would be any harm going back to the previous radios.
I just had this yesterday for the first time as well.. was on the train trying to watch a film, and it kept popping up every 15-30 seconds.... really annoying.

As other poster replied. Enable Global and prompt will go away.
Flashed cm10.1 and my data works great. My first gs3 was plagued with data issues.

Only problem is even when global mode is enabled, if you lose service it then has to refresh the f$&*ing "SIM data", which exits whatever application your using and temporarily disables wifi to do so! I think this is even more f*&%ing annoying because it happens just as frequently as the global prompt! Im really upset with samsung and everyone else who had a stake in the update. You'd think there wouldn't be a problem with releasing a patch but noooooooooooo, it's gotta be a new revision before they care to push anything!

And of course use more battery. LOL Have you guys found a solution to this? I have been away from TW Roms for a while, and thought I'd try a couple. Does it depend on the rom, or will they be all the same if on the same base?
Has anyone found a work around for this? I'm trying a few TW roms to see how they've come along and to see how much better signal is with them. The problem is, as has been stated everywhere with seemingly no answer, that global mode pops up constantly when signal is iffy. Where I live and work the signal is always iffy. This alone is enough to keep at least myself away from TW roms forever no matter how much better the signal is. And it does seem to be at least 3 Db/m better for me, and more usually. This is a big difference in the sticks where I live and work. Anyway, just wondering if anyone has came up with a workaround.
And yes I've tried manually setting LTE/CDMA in data to no avail. I don't want the issue described above where it has to screw with the sim everytime I lose signal. And the popup is more irritating than the poison ivy I have itching me all over.
If anyone has a solution please for the love of god, or no love of god, tell me.

The MOAR port has the option to permanently stop that option from popping up after you see it once.
