Guess you never owned a new RAZR. ICS took forever and JB is a pipe dream. The new RAZR M just got JB so this is nothing new. Their focus is on selling new to market units, not throwing money at upgrading the OS on already sold units.

Funny thing is the S3 is still Verizon's best phone and well continue to be for now. Putting JB on it will just help sell more units as well as keep current customers happy.
Unfortunately Verizon does not care about keeping customers happy as long as they continue to hit their numbers every quarter.

Thats because Verizon prefers to push their "Droid" branded phones IMO.
They will eventually have to release a JB update. I'm just hoping source doesn't take too long to drop after it.
Samsung Galaxy S3
I'm really really really hoping I'm wrong but based on Verizon's history, I'm not holding out hope that we will see JellyBean on our GS3s anytime soon.
Take for example the Galaxy Nexus, by all logic the Verizon version should have gotten JB update at the same time as the GSM version.
However from what I understand(I don't own one) the GSM Nexus got the JB update the last week of June (~27th), while Verizon Nexus owners didn't receive it till Sept 27th, almost 2 months later.
Even if you argue that it takes a little longer to create CDMA/LTE-JB compared to a GSM/LTE-JB that doesn't account for the 2 month time lag. Not when you have access to all of the source code and hardware roadmaps the Samsung does.
In fact, I don't think it has anything to do with Samsung at all. According to what I've recently read, Sprint GS3's are getting JB starting tomorrow.
That means Samsung has already created an acceptable Official CDMA/LTE-JB update that has already been vetted by Sprint that is set to start being pushed out tomorrow with absolutely no evidence of one even existing for Verizon(not even a whiff of a leak or anything)
I don't know why it takes so long, but I do know that it seems like Verizon never gets anything first, in fact they usually get everything last(not counting T-mobile)
At this point I've stopped checking the forum. I'm just hopping that I'll wake up one morning and see an update notification on my phone.
Rumor has it Sprint might be getting OTA JB update starting tomorrow. If that is true, way to go Sprint. That is how updates should roll out.
Guess we will see tomorrow.

Putting JB on it won't sell more units. Most people don't know the difference and couldn't tell you the difference if they did a side by side comparison.
Google created this monster when it decided to make it open source with little control over how it's utilized. Apple devices cost more to the carrier and the carrier has little to no input on how the phone functions.
Apple made face time open for use over data where before it was wifi only. What did the carriers do, cry and get over it. Apple introduces imessage which circumvents regular texting lowering revenue from text messaging. What do the carriers do? Nada. Had it been android it wouldn't make it to our devices because they have no control over it. They release the OS, manufacturer builds it to the phones specs and then it's sent off to the carrier for bloating and restricting. Verizon is a service provider they have no business diddling around in an operating system.
Verizon as a customer centric business does have a great customer service. They're more responsive than most other carriers. However, they are in the business to make money and they want to maintain control of the very devices that could either make or break them. We phone enthusiasts are just a drop in the bucket to the millions of other customers that don't care what version OS their phone is on.

This is what draws people to Apple though. They should take a lesson if they want to compete on the long-term.
I'll never, ever, buy another Motorola phone again. They come out with a new phone every other month, and drop support entirely for their existing phones.

Dude you are wrong.
Most people don't know about & don't care about JB. Only the fanatics(ie people on XDA, me included) care one way or the other what version of Android is running on their phone.
This is even more true for IOS users. If OEMs didn't push updates to phones OTA most phones would never get updated. There are plenty of people who have there phones set up pretty much exactly the way it was coming out of the box.
I'd argue that your average Android user is a little bit more savvy about customizing his experience but mostly because there are more options, not necessarily because they are more tech savvy. Overall that average user isn't significantly more advanced than an average IOS user.
You would be surprised how many people purchase phones based on either the salesman's advice or the advice of a friend.
All of the talk of specs, fragmentation, OS updates is purely for the phone geek crowd.
Probably 1% of people are going to make their decision based on update version.

I would much rather be on Verizons network running ICS as opposed to Sprints with JellyBean...I need service more than timely updates. We will get a update, until then im perfectly content with what development is currently active on this device. we dont need jellybean source to get the ril perfected anyway. all we need is a dev like jt1134 that wrote the mtd filesystem for the fascinate and hacked the ril to near perfection...he also was the main reason cm7 ever made it to the fascinate. That device barely got a gingerbread ota and that didnt happen till way after cm7 was released. point is, support your devs folks! they are the ones that will keep this device up to date after the carriers drop it. I never log on to xda for news on ota updates...things are so much different now than it use to be here and there is alot less dense information in these forums. I never said I would rather be on Sprint. I left Sprint about 8 months ago after being with them for 15 years. I am just saying I am pretty surprised to see this update come out so quick for them. Would have guessed we would have seen it on AT&T or T-Mobile first. Whether you like Sprint or not is irrelevant, I do think it is kind of cool to see JB released already for them though. It shows that there head is in the right place.
To be honest, if Verizon's network was not leaps and bounds better then others I do not even think the company would exist right now. Choosing to lock bootloaders, blocking apps like Google Wallet, worst data plans, the slowest updates ever and basically not caring about what the customer wants does not sound to enticing. Once the other providers catch up they better start to change their tude or they will begin to see a huge decline in numbers.
I do think Sprint really f'd up and now they are trying to be the good guy. While their network was going to the ****ter instead of giving their customers reasons to stay they continued to remove features at a rapid pace. They removed the Premier program, removed discounts from any line but the first, raised their ETF fee, raised their insurance prices and I am sure I am missing a few other things. Maybe now they are realizing with a network as ****ty as theirs they need reasons to actually keep customers and not scare them away.

According to an Samsung insider( of whom shall be annonymous), it seems like Samsung is scheduled to release their Froyo + GPS update to At&t at the end of September.
The question is, will At&T release this update on their OTA on the same month?
Manufacturer may have the solution fixed, but if the carrier doesnt release it to the public, what is the point no?
Here is the direct quote from this insider:
"Froyo plus GPS update will be available at the end of September. Now let's just pray that A&T releases it at the same time."

We all hope this will be the case.
Another question I have along those lines:
After FroYo, will my rooted phone still be rooted? If not, will the same rooting process still work?
While I definitely want the new OS, and especially to have GPS that doesn't take 5 minutes to find me, I'd be hesitant at the expense of all the work I put into the phone since I got it.

Hard to say, I'd expect to have to re-root though and also to have to use a modified update.zip to root, if not a new method all together.

It is likely you will have to root the device again.
Well Samsung said on their @samsungtweets account that the GPS fix was indeed coming at end of September. It didnt say anything about Froyo though.
"We're testing software to optimize GPS on US Galaxy S. Expected updates avail. in Sept. Details & download to follow."
I have little doubt that ATT is interested in taking care of Captivate. Given the spectacular growth in Android phone sales which overtook iPhone sales in Q2, AT&T must be very concerned and they should develop a new Android strategy.

If they were smart they would hop on android bandwagon. If all the reports are true and they are losing iphone exclusivity soon, and they are slow to support android they are going to be in a heap of trouble. Crackberries alone cant and wont save them

When the update from ATT arrives, can I decide to install it or not? Will it be forced to my phone?
Sure I want froyo, but if it is going to bring other limitations impossed by ATT, I'd pass and continue waiting.
lol when i saw the vibrant commercial i thought it was a captivate commercial untill the end when i started paying attention and noticed the differences
Is this a Captivate only thing? Because I would imagine T-mobile would want it first more than AT&T, since they don't have an iPhone and the Vibrant is basically their topmost phone right now.

I went and saw inception today, as I pulled my phone out to turn it off, the captivate commercial came on. It was great, got my iPhone using friends attention, and he couldn't wait to play with it.
at&t won't make a big push for ANYTHING while they retain iPhone exclusivity. Losing it will be the best thing that could happen to at&t customers. Finally get some support and love for other, equaly capable, (superior?) devices.

AT&T knows that the iPhone users are loyal to the phone and not the company. Their new Android strategy might as well be labeled their "exit strategy" from the iPhone to retain customers when they lose exclusivity.
If the rumors are true, Verizon will have it's single largest porting day in January and AT&T better prepare for it. Having devices like the Captivate sure help but they need to be on the phone with HTC daily demanding an EVOish device from them as well.
The Captivate won't get the number of customers the iPhone did but if they launched an ad campaign for a large and diverse Android portfolio headlined by the Captivate, a high end Moto, and HTC with the X10, Aria, and other devices below it they could surprisingly become the company for Android.
The iUsers will still get the iPhone, a small percentage will defect like I did, but they will have a steady stream of devices that vastly surpass the iPhone and will not be as affected as they could be.
For some reason the Streak slipped my mind. Add that to the high-end devices.
well thats samsungs release date but we all know att plus yeah i think i might just switch over to verizon i was doing some comparison and their plans are way cheaper for me
Does any body think that if Samsung had been on time with updates such as 2.2 and gotten us up to speed at a decent time that we would still be considered an elite phone instead of one just lagging behind?
IMO, the captivate is still elite I love my captivate, even running 100% stock. My friends with iPhone4's even love my captivate.

It's called technology. It will happen to the newly released phones as well. If the phone you have still serves its purpose, then why worry about the next generation? Having something simply because it has higher numbers and is "new" or "revolutionary" is just being foolish and listening to a marketing department. Buy something new because what you have is not allowing you to do something.
I am talking about 2.3 and eventually 3.0 not the phones in general, just us never getting up graded to the next OS.
All things aside I do think its bull**** that they can't roll out 2.2. I mean look at the complexities and flexibilities of the android os, I'm pretty sure if they really wanted to they could roll it out to us. But no they're just a bunch of assholes and....nvm /rage

It makes sense because the Captivate was built for AT&T and Samsung and AT&T have a contract that stipulates that the carrier approves the updates and tests them prior to deployment.
If you don't want that situation, then you need to buy a carrier free phone - like the i9000 that was sold unlocked from Expansys and other sites.
If you buy an AT&T (or any other carrier branded phone) then you are stuck waiting for carrier approval. This is true with any brand of phone - Moto, HTC, etc. don't release updates until approved by the carrier.

Three Words: Windows. Phone. 7.
Wow, what a bunch of whining. If you arent savvy enough to install any one of the MANY 2.2 roms out there, why are you complaining that newer, more complicated phones will leave this one in the dust?
Anyways, I think official 2.2 rolls out soon, just got a text from ATT saying an update will be pushed to my phone. Also, this phone has the minimum specs for android 3.0, from what Ive read, so I dont see why you think we wont be seeing android 3.0. With the way we are modifying roms and kernels right now, even if we didnt get an official 3.0 update, Im sure we would be able to at least port it. These phones are monsters, this thing has better specs than my laptop I got 5 years ago that was about 8X the price.

What did the text say? Sounds like you got a JI7 update message, especially if you are already running a 2.2 variant.
All the other 2.2 updates from samsung have been done via Kies, so i doubt that will be pushed 2.2. As for current Roms, most are based on beta 2.2 builds, none are 100% perfect - not that Samsung will do much better

To the op, patience grasshopper. That and timely donations to the developers here.
i just recently purchased the Captivate and it came with 2.1
and was wondering when 2.2 will be coming to the US??
You can have it now, if you really want it. I recommended taking some time to learn about your phone and see if flashing a custom version of a Froyo based ROM is right for you. Hell, there are some great Eclair ROMs here too.
I've never modded a cell phone in my life until I got my Captivate. If not for that one major feature (thanks goes to XDA and the awesome devs here) I'd be raging mad at Samsung as I bought my phone thinking official Froyo would be out any minute- that was the end of august, mind you.
You're going to soon learn that Samsung doesn't give a damn about you.

If you want the official release... you'll be waiting a while....
Tweeted from Samsung just yesterday... "We want Galaxy S owners to have simple/reliable upgrade. We r running tests due to complexity/unique functionality."
So, basically... after the Canadian debacle, they'll be testing this until who knows when. Personally, Samsung/ATT should just pay to license one of the ROMs here on XDA and be done with it. I'm guessing every ROM on this board has had more live testing then anything ATT or Samsung will come out with.
The community certainly has an advantage in that area. Having worked at a few software companies, there's generally a healthy emphasis on testing / limiting functionality for consumer products so you don't get a ton of expensive support calls or returns. I've seen beta programs run all sorts of interesting ways (and some successfully, but I think I've seen an equal number of terrible attempts).
I wouldn't hold my breath for a company like Samsung to approach an enthusiast community such as this one, even if it could help them basically for free. Reaching out like that can sometimes backfire as well since you're relinquishing a certain amount of control to your audience.

those guys at att know absolutely shi* , they pretend to know just like everyone else at there jobs pretend to know whats going on. Fact of the matter is there have been alot of samsung phones come out after captivate and in very little time have gotten froyo or coming out with 2.3. Truth is they got your money and my money, they dont give a rats a** about the captivate and upgrades. At this point they look at it as a done deal they are in no hurry and will not dedicate any man hours to it, what might usually have a team to do is prob being done by one person. They figure if u want it buy another phone, prob is everyone locked in to 2 year contracts with this piece of sh**.
From what I read, Samsung will release info on CES about Galaxy S2 phones. They will probably come with Froyo 2.2. Until those phones show up in stores, we Galaxy S owners/suckers have to wait for our turn of updating while S2 owners patiently waiting for Gingerbread 2.3 update. And the cycle continues.

those guys at att know absolutely shi* , they pretend to know just like everyone else at there jobs pretend to know whats going on.

How do you really feel?
att reps dont know anything, some say things to get you to leave but have no official information or try to fill in the blanks to make you happy. the froyo release is a mystery entirely. it was supposedly scheduled for december according to a samsung tweet but according to an email in another thread is pending approval by att. there is probably a few more features they want removed!
the canadians got froyo on 2 of there galaxy s phones i don't think we can be too far behind but without official information "not too far" might be 3 months.
now i wouldn't complian till after t-mobile gets froyo (or did they get it already) after all the t-mobile rom doesn't have unique features like tethering that was either removed or if the jj4 leak is an indicator has a check for a tethering plan, or a lack of side loading, or a lack of hsupa and incompatability with modems for other phones that have hsupa. but really the vibrant has more in common with other galaxy s phones that already have froyo so those guys should expect the update first.
now granted the people that make decisions at att are retards i dont think you should give up on froyo. i dont know where the idea that att is thinking about dropping froyo all together came from but there is no way that froyo is giving more problems than the stock firmware or the update. maybe they are building bad press for samsung by delaying the update and blaming samsung to boost iphone sales? or is it windows phone 7 now?
but anyway i'd run a ported rom for a bell vibrant or telus fascinate, or tmobile vibrant with i9000 kernel and bell or telus modem. that way you dont get att restrictions.
Second day I bought my captivate I put a ROM on it. You can ask your local representative or listen to twitter posts and continue to complain about everyone knowing nothing. Or be proactive and do something, after a few hours of reading I was confident with flashing and knew a good deal.
The open source community has always been good to those who go out and do more than ask the AT&T guys, leave that stuff up to the soccer moms and the iPhone users.
I don't necessarily believe the AT&T rep either. I don't think the store reps get that kind of information so he probably just threw a date out there. That said, I've decided I'm not going to wait any longer since I realized it's actually a win/win situation to flash a custom ROM from the devs here. I'll have 2.2 without the AT&T bloatware.
Now I just have to decide which ROM to flash.

It just has not been released to the public. But that is why communities like this one are so great.
This is a thread to express your anger at AT&T for not updating phones on a timely basis... They are stalling so they don't have to put their Developers to work and update phones, yet the *PRIZED* possession of AT&T, the Iphone (I$hit) and let apple update them on their own and don't fill them with bloatware.... I absolutely hate that they treat phones like that....

Agreed, I just root and flash and don't worry about att. Most average users don't even know what a update is nor do they care.

This thread is unnecessary. If you are on xda, chances are you are looking to make your phone better. If not, you probably don't care. Why is this thread different from others complaining about a carrier? And if you are on Miui why complain? Even with source there will be bugs needing fixed.

Less yes, but still bugs. All I am saying is creating a thread to vent on a forum that is designed to change how your phone works is pointless. Go back to stock on your phone because the bugs will not be as plentiful.

Usually I wouldn't worry about this thread and move on, but I agree with the OP about the iPhone.
When AT&T got possession of the most powerful phone in the world (SGS II, for those that don't know) there wasn't one single advertisement saying that it was coming out or that they was selling it. When the iPhone had TWO WEEKS to release there was a big *** advertisement on their homepage for preorders. On top of that, when you look at their smartphones the iPhone lineup from the best to the worst that they are selling are all of the first phones listed, where's the SGS II? DEAD LAST!!!

I don't blame AT&T that much, why wouldn't they push a single phone that millions want vs. pushing all of the android phones they have, in the past two months we have seen the galaxy s II, the Atrix II, the SkyRocket and the Vivid released. Before that it as the Atrix, Infuse, and Inspire, all the while Apple has released 1 phone. From a marketing perspective its much cheaper to push 1 phone vs. the 7 I just mentioned and the other 4 smaller releases they have had for android. On top of that they are also selling Windows 7 and blackberry phones. To sum it up its makes sense and is cheaper for them the market the hell out the most popular phone in America then to have to create new campaigns every month for the next flagship phone that gets released for Android. I think that extends to updates as well, I would bet if there were one android manufacturer like Apple for Iphone we would see much quicker updates, its just sort the headache you sign up for when you buy an android phone, if you want quick updates get a google phone, otherwise all you can do is flash.

Dude, the captivate is a 1 year old model, unless they start melting down in peoples hands, dont expect another update for your phone. I can just about promise ICS will never come for cappy from AT&T. Be glad we did finally get GB.

I've come to expect very little from AT&T. Just a bit more than the bare minimum (i.e. a phone that can call people).
also if you want to express any opinion to At&t, contact At&t. dont expect that they research their old products as well enough to find this message to them.
email, call - i think they have these options if not default to angry letter attached to a box with an old style wind up clock in it.

I was largely under the presumption that, as AT&T customers, we've done this so often that we're sick of it and absolutely can't stand another 3hr+ chat just to get them to send us a replacement phone.

I was specifically referencing the idea of calling AT&T, not discussing the issue of replacement phones.
ok then dont call them. make a blog, or yell at the wall, it will do you the same amount of good as posting here.
Stupid question but how is Sprint & Verizon when it comes to updates? I have read they also do the same, MetroPCS are still selling Eclair phones I believe.

It is pretty much all the us providers that slow down getting the updates. Some manufacturers were sending out pretty frequent updates for their phones but usually it was because they would send out an update like 2.2 which would have some bugs, then a month later they would supposedly fix those bugs with an update that incremented to 2.2.1, 2.2.3 or whatever (I do not remember the exact updates but some of my coworkers with their HTC or Moto phones seemed to get the little incremented updates pretty often, but going from lets say 2.2 to 2.3 took a while.
This is ONE of the advanteges to 1. having a sister device in common like the i9000 and i897 cappy and as well the i9100 and i777. Which WILL allow us on Cappys and ATT OG SGS2's to stay ahead of whatever it is the provider puts out. Like on my cappy I was running froyo maybe 6 months before att decided to put out a official update, then just as att put out the official froyo I was running leaked gingerbread roms which STILL has not been made official from att.
AND 2. being a part of the XDA community so we can get these BETTER THAN STOCK ROM leaks well before.

I am getting really fed up with the constant line of BS from both Samsung and AT&T about the release date of Gingerbread on the Captivate. So, yesterday, I spent a couple of hours bugging everyone that I could about it. Twitter feeds were pretty much useless, but I got into a chat with the AT&T service center.
I pointedly asked when Gingerbread would be out on the Captivate. The rep first tried to tell me that she thought it was already out, and started looking for when it was released. I pointed out that it was not yet out, that kies mini had not been released for it, and that both Samsung and AT&T's websites still showed the phone with 2.2.
She stopped typing for a couple of minutes. I asked if there was anyone else that I could contact that would know. That I was extremely disappointed in the experience that I've had with AT&T and the Captivate so far, and that I was definitely not buying another AT&T Samsung phone.
More time passed, as she asked me to hang on while she made some calls. When she returned, she told me that the release schedule was set by Samsung, and that AT&T had already approved GB for the Captivate. Note that this is the opposite story as what I've gotten from Samsung.
She went on to say that the Samsung person who she had just talked to on the phone had told her that it would be "next year" before Captivates are updated to 2.3.
So, take it with a grain of salt, but I would not be surprised. That date is after most of the early adopters are upgrade eligible, and I would bet that they are waiting for us to upgrade to new handsets rather than push out the 2.3 update.
TL;DR: AT&T blames Samsung for delay (Samsung blames AT&T). AT&T service rep says that Samsung is not releasing update until next year.
Seeing as how Rogers updated the virtually identical i896 to GB already, I'm going out on a limb and saying AT$T is to blame...just as they were on delayed Froyo release.

T-Mobile's Galaxy S 4G (different than the Vibrant) got it already, too. And the Fascinate (Verizon variant) is set to get it any day now. It could come out for the Captivate at any time...or never at all.
But the fact is that the phone is no longer being marketed and no new ones are being shipped for sale. You can get refurbs and a handful of places might have some stragglers in stock. But neither AT&T nor Samsung will make any money off the Captivate moving forward, so they have no incentive to keep them updated other than making existing owners happy trying to retain them. How many people want an upgrade to 2.3? 10? 1000? 5000? Drop in the bucket for them. For every person who leaves AT&T because of the Captivate, they'll probably gain a Verizon customer who hated the Fascinate.
People don't like to switch carriers, so AT&T has little to lose by not updating to 2.3.
Samsung is making a killing off the SGS2 line and will also do so with the Galaxy Nexus. Plus, a lot of captivate owners who can even tell the difference between 2.2 and 2.3 have probably already moved on to other phones. Sadly, the number of people who want 2.3 for the Captivate is decreasing every day while the number of people using newer Samsung phones is increasing by huge numbers every day.
I've only owned the phone for a year, but I'm already set on getting the Galaxy Nexus. At this point, I just don't really care whether 2.3 ever comes out for the Captivate. I think a lot of people have similar opinions.
I think the majority of current Captivate owners don't even know that they're a version behind and will just go pick out a new phone when their contracts are up. I would imagine that AT&T and Samsung view such an update more as an expense with little return rather than an investment in retaining customers.
So I guess what I'm saying is: Hope for it, but don't hold your breath.
Guys.. not trying to be mean but, this is a modders forum.. if you haven't already rooted and rommed your phones.. I would encourage it.
At&t can release the official GB update today for all I care.. I am sticking with CM7(gingerbread) and then cm9(Ice cream sandwich).
I got this phone knowing it would take forever to see 2.2 officially.. 2.3 would probably never come out either...
But, it has amazing dev support which is comparable to any phone out there just about.
Wondering when GB will come out, now that ICS is about to be available in rom form just seems futile.
Sure there are a few quirks every so often with roms.. but, most of the time they are as stable as the stock..
If it's not coming why is Sammy wasting it's time, money and energy making an AT&T bloated GB update?
I already have my sights set on the GSII. Been running GB for many months now, anyway.
We all know it is and has been att for a LONG TIME that don't get out the updates in a timely manner. Samsung has actually stepped up its game on getting updates ready. We can see this with how samsung 2.3 leaks with att bloatware already in it MONTHS AGO. So it is definetelh att. Samsung.g has been really quick with putting out source code for newer phones also as an example, all the SGS2'S INCLUDING the att SGS2 had the source code either days before or within a few days of the phone being released. Another example for samsung is the source code (not her the kernel) for the new galaxy nexus has been out for over a week and the phone just got released what yesterday or something.
Unfortunately alot of the great devs have moved onto the ATT SGS2 and other sgs2's but there are still some great devs around here for the cappy. If you follow the i9000 (which still has great support) you can see they are already making ICS working with pretty quick strides. Once they get it working hopefully a dev from this section can reoriented a kernel for the cappy.
So LONG STORY SHORT, DONT WAIT FOR ATT as any of us that got the captivate on/near release date knows. Just get into using modded OS roms and forget about waiting for att. That is why MOST of are actually on a Modding site in the first place, right?

After getting the Captivate in February of this year, I was curious when we would get Foyo. I flashed Cognition 4 within a week of owning the phone. I'm now on GB and do not expect ATT to ever update it or release the official source code.
I'm just going to wait for the Galaxy Nexus when my upgrade in July is available...unless something better comes out by then.
And this is why I am utterly perplexed by people's flagrant affinity towards Samsung. Even if it's AT&T's fault, why would you want to put up with this again?
At least the GS2 is also a development-friendly phone, but still. I'm never buying another Samsung again. I'll put KK2 or whatever on this phone, and look for a new HTC on Black Friday.
Being apathetic to AT&T's lack of support just because you're on a custom GB ROM is terrible. That kind of behavior just encourages AT&T and other carriers to continue to have terrible support practices.
You know that ROM you're on? Aside from Cyanogen, it's based on some other carrier's GB ROM. What if Rogers looked at AT&T's model for support and saw that it cost much less and the customers didn't complain (because so many of you are so apathetic now), and copied it (ie. didn't put out an update)? We then wouldn't have a base for half our ROMs.
Guys this was an old story before android was ever released. Carriers are never great about timely updates if ever and att is the worst. If you want a phone based on the updates then get a nexus. No point in really complaining about it unless you have a great idea how to fix it.
Is it right? Nope. Will it change? Maybe. But how is the question. Spamming them about it doesn't work. Emails do nothing so open to ideas

They always have. We have seen dozens of leaks that were never sent officail. They do it to keep us happy. Figure if they give us enough leaks then we will not complain about when the official will be released.
The main ones that don't see this are the ones new to smart phone Modding on XDA. We prefer the beta leaks anyway

Don't get the Vivid as it has a locked down bootloader and hasn't been perma rooted yet.

If I can temproot and remove all the crapware, I'd be happy enough.
The idea of burning $500+ and still being network-bound to one of America's lousy GSM-based providers is beyond me. If I had that sort of money, I'd just go to the reasonably update-friendly Big Red and take some subsidization to get a better plan.

This has been driving me crazy. See I bricked a phone in May and I'm anxious for the update so AT&T and Samsung can update my bootloaders for me, and then its on them. I just want them to release the damn update so I can go to a gingerbread rom. I'm willing to bet if I just bit the bullet and went to gingerbread I wouldn't brick my phone with bootloaders, but after you brick a phone it does make you scared to ever mess with boatloaders again. I'm running Cognition 4.5 right now, and the phones running great, but I still would like to go to the newest version of Android.
I will say everyone can complain about Samsung/AT&T all they want but unless your sporting an official Google Phone (nexus one/Nexus S/galaxy Nexus) you're waiting forever on updates, and getting cut off way too soon. I do think if your in the market for an android phone its best to buy one that has the best hardware and has the current version of Android already installed, because regardless of what carrier/manufacturer you go through you're going to wait on updates. For example, the HTC Droid Incredible came out before our phone and just got its GB update the other day.
